This is “Our State”

Commentary from BAM

I know it’s been discussed, but I just really wanted to emphasize what a bold campaign this is. I swear every time I see one of these billboards I get goosebumps. The Athletic Department is going all in with their chips on this one. It’s bold and brazen, and I absolutely love it! You know Carolina “nation” is incredulous at the idea we would have such foolish notions, or even the audacity.

It really does feel like the Perfect Storm is forming for us to reclaim our rightful position among public universities in the state of North Carolina. We do things the right way, as best we can. We have the most dedicated fan base. We have made the necessary moves as of late to restructure and reposition ourselves for greatness. It’s the dawn of a new era in NC collegiate athletics I do believe.

WELCOME TO OUR STATE (i.e. SUCK IT CAROLINA!)

With the rug getting lifted in Chapel Hill, the timing of this couldn’t be better.

  2. state73 06/22/2012 at 11:23 AM #

Until the “holes” beat us 5x in a row in football, THIS IS OUR STATE!!

  3. Dogbreath 06/22/2012 at 12:08 PM #

Not to be Debbie Downer, but I’d prefer we address the unacceptable issue of having zero apparel in the RDU concourse shops, while Duke and UNC are on full display.

    Then we can buy billboards.

  4. runwiththepack 06/22/2012 at 12:33 PM #

    Dogbreath,

How much of that disparity is due to our apparel not selling? Do the owners of these places really disfavor us? Wouldn’t be too surprised if that was often the case, but it might be important to know those things before we have much chance of changing them.

We’ve had some very exciting players in Raleigh in the past 10-20 years. Rivers, Russell, Tory Holt, Julius Hodge, et al, and now Amerson. Maybe UNC basketball really is that much more popular that UNC vanquishes us in the apparel biz. It sure ain’t their football.

Beyond the personalities, the CArolina Machine has done everything they can to promote UNC-CH while saying hardly a good thing about NCSU.

By Carolina Machine, I refer to BOG, legislature, media, etc…, not the Rams Club.

This ad campaign presumably will raise the notoriety(along with more winning records) of the State image and then the sales will follow whether it be at the airport or in various stores at malls.

I love this campaign and quite frankly its 25 years overdue.

I had this idea when Valvano was still coaching to paint the geographic
outline of the state on the basketball floor. Just something I had always thought about and have always wished that I brought it up to V. He would have been a person to consider it….Willis Casey probably wouldn’t have wanted to spend the money however little it might have been.
This would have visually established, as TOB as said, that we are the State university.

Well in two years the Dean Dome was built and low and behold there is my idea in that damn baby blue. I could have kicked myself for not bringing it up. Now even ECU has an outline on its football field.

This is an outstanding campaign and I would only like to know whether someone in the ADept thought of it or if the ADept paid a PR/Ad firm for the idea.

Nothing better than seeing it unveiled as time ran out against the Holes and Dbag Withers. So funny.

Perhaps this branding effort will make us more attractive to the SEC.

Dogbreath, you mean they’ve sold out of our stuff again?

How do you address the unacceptable issue of having zero apparel in the RDU concourse shops, while Duke and UNC are on full display. Will begging the Concourse merchants to carry our stuff make a real difference? Wanna try to force them to do so?

No offense intended Dogbreath but I’d say you said the above based on having a thought, not thinking. I further assert that Randy and Debbie came up with their bold and audacious stand by thinking.

Conventional wisdom is do-have-be: Work hard, accumalate a lot of wins, be conference champs — sometimes. NC State has been trying it that way for a hundred years.

How’s that working for us? Will business as usual make the difference. When you are grinding it out and are still behind, do you still do the same things hoping for a different result.

The UNX BOG has been doing what the establishment does — everything it can to maintain the status quo. They’ve made sure that State didn’t get too big for its britches. DO keep the BOG top heavy with UNC grads, DO keep State coaches salaries less than UNC-CHeat coaches salaries, etc., etc., etc. The BOG, the UNC-BOT and the admin is threatened big time by State now. I personally believe that this threat is the source of their digging in and denying everything to do with the academic fraud. They must protect the illusion of their being the Flagship of the University of North Carolina. (With a little luck soon that flag will be the white flag of surrender.)

BTW our own BOT and Administration had a bold and audacious play about 23 years ago to wrestle back the university from the influence of athletics. That’s started changing back with MAF and the faculty and admin got rid of her. That was then. This is now.

I wasn’t thrilled when Woodson came here as chancellor. How wrong can one man be. I wasn’t thrilled when Debbie Yow came here. Oh I was thrilled we had a new AD but DY hadn’t exactly set the world on fire at Maryland. I was as wrong about Debbie Yow as I was about Randy Woodson.

How do we interupt that “Do-Have-Be” momentum? One way is to alter the culture of our community. Tom O’Brien took a stand when he came to NC State. He is standing for “Champions in the classroom, in the community and on the field.” That’s NOT we will be champions in the classroom some day, one day after we take care of our APR or whatever. That’s NOT we will be champions in the community some day, one day after we get the right kids in here. That’s not we will be champions on the field some day, one day after we get the right recruits in here.

Standing for “Champions in the classroom, in the community and on the field” is a right now, in an your face bold way of BEING. “This is our State” is a right now, in your face bold way of BEING.

Make no mistake “This is our State” is a shot across the bow of the flagship.

I wasn’t particularly happy with Tom O’Brien being hired as the head coach and in a Do-Be-Have world he ain’t “the one.” In the Be-Do-Have world of Randy Woodson and Debbie Yow, Marine Officer Tom O’Brien is the perfect one.

I see in the near future “Champions in the classroom, in the community and on the field” being the mantra of the entire athletics department.

In the beginning was the word and the word is “State”. This is our State. We are the State university. We are State!

    More on Be-Do-Have…

It makes perfect sense if you think about it. Start out “BEing a great father, which naturally leads to doing what a great father does, which results in having what a great father would have — a loving, successful family. The same could be said of any endeaver. The adage, ‘clothes make the man’ is a version of Be-Do-Have — Be/look successful.

There are examples of both Do-Have-Be and Be-Do-Have ways sprinkled in life. “Do the best you can” and “Be the best ___ you can be.” “Fake it til you make it” says it in catchy but an unflatering way.

Woodson and Yow IMNSHO have seen the leadership of TOB. Football is the flagship, stealing a word frop our cousins, sport of NC State and showing the way. Gott immediately followed suit and started altering the culture of the basketball program. More will fall in line of fall out of the ranks.

Lead, follow or get out of the effing way.

    I love it!

I have always felt was more the university of the state more so than anyone else. This is the best move by an AD to embrace the state since Les Robinson vastly improved the radio network throughout the state.

    Dogbreath,

I’m in RDU all the time and there is most definitely our stuff there.

“I had this idea when Valvano was still coaching to paint the geographic
outline of the state on the basketball floor.”

When I read that, I was thinking, why the hell would have a State fan want to be like unx? Then I kept reading…

“Well in two years the Dean Dome was built and low and behold there is my idea in that damn baby blue.”

And realized you had no clue.

Dude, Carmichael Auditorium had the geographic imprint at center court well before the Dean Dome was built. It was there well before Valvano “arrove” in Raleigh. Although I’m not sure, I think it had been there since the arena opened in 1965.

It wasn’t “your idea”. Had you gone to Valvano with it, he would’ve either laughed or kicked you out of his office.

  12. Primewolf 06/22/2012 at 7:27 PM #

I like the concept of the ad. However, the wood posts the flags are attached to are way to short and homemade looking. Every one was different. I can’t imagine the person in charge not thinking of that. Overall, great theme, cheap execution and lack of attention to detail that could have made it a home run.

  13. gcpack 06/22/2012 at 7:53 PM #

You are wrong foose and rude as usual.
I assure you that there was no imprint on the floor when Carmichael was built. It wasn’t there in the early ’70’s either when I went to a blue and white game.
Of course facts have never stopped you from being inconsiderate have they?

  14. tjfoose1 06/22/2012 at 8:30 PM #

Stating facts is not rude. Perhaps if they are in direct conflict with your assertion you may perceive them that way.

I saw games at Carmichael before the Dean Dome was ever built, the imprint was already there.

You don’t have to take my word for it, do a simply Google search, or YouTube search… Here, I’ll do it for you…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQKUaZBHCOo&feature=related

I’ll make it easy… That’s Michael Jordan, playing in Carmichael, in 1983. What’s that big blue thing in the middle of the court?

The Dean Dome opened in 1986.

    It wasn’t “your idea”.

And btw, I never said the imprint was on the floor when Carmichael was built. What I said was, “Although I’m not sure, I think it had been there since the arena opened in 1965.”

Key words being, “I’m not sure” and “I think”.

I like the campaign and the brashness of saying it. The tide is turning and this is another step.

  16. TLeo 06/23/2012 at 12:49 PM #

I like the billboards and commercial. It’s a great way to tell unc-cheat to go F** off and that State is THE State University of NC – not them.

  17. ncsuallday 06/24/2012 at 2:03 AM #

I think the video isn’t bad – the tiny-poled flag was kinda corny. UNC leads us 27-32 in the ACC era and while we’ve only managed a five game streak one other time before this, they’ve managed seven against us twice. I’d like to see us pass them in the win/loss record to feel like we can legitimately make that claim but I do appreciate how bold Yow and the administration is being and the steps they’ve taken to get us more nationally recognized.

  18. JSRy2k 06/24/2012 at 5:05 PM #

TOB would get the last word. Bwahahahaha!

‘gcpack’ also had the idea for Facebook but was two years too late with that one as well.
