Pack Baseball to Host Raleigh Regional

Wolfpack Baseball returns home after a disappointing trip to Greensboro.  The Pack must lick its wounds and rest up quickly, however, because it was made official yesterday that NC State Baseball will be hosting an NCAA Regional at Doak Field.  For more information, including ticket information, you can go here.

The bracket for the 2012 NCAA Baseball Tournament has been announced and the Pack will welcome (2)Vanderbilt, (3)UNC-Wilmington, and (4)Sacred Heart to town for the Raleigh Regional at Doak Field beginning on Friday, June 1st and running thru Monday, June 4th.  For the full tournament bracket, you can go here.

The games schedule for Raleigh is as follows:

Friday, June 1st

  • 2 p.m. - (2)Vanderbilt vs. (3)UNC-Wilmington (Game 1)
  • 7 p.m. – (1)NC State vs. (4)Sacred Heart (Game 2)

Saturday, June 2nd

  • 2 p.m. – Loser Games 1 and 2 (Game 3)
  • 7 p.m. – Winner Games 1 and 2 (Game 4)

Sunday, June 3rd

  • 1 p.m. – Winner Game 3 vs. Loser Game 4 (Game 5)
  • 6 p.m. – Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5 (Game 6)

Monday, June 4th (if necessary)

  • 1 p.m. – Winner Game 6 vs. Loser Game 6 (Game 7)

The Raleigh Regional has been paired with the Gainesville Regional.  If the Pack emerges unscathed from Raleigh, they will likely be rewarded with a trip to Gainesville, Florida to take on the tournament’s top seeded Florida Gators for a best of 3.

We’ll have a preview of the teams that will be visiting the Pack a little later in the week.

Go Pack!  The road to Omaha starts in Raleigh this year!

Absolutely baffling that State got paired with Florida.

Yeah, paired with Fla, and with Vandy as the #2 seed. I guess better than the year we were a #1 seed and got sent to the home field of the #2 (Okl St), but not by much. Hopefully we’ll at least see Gainsville for the experience for the frosh.

I’ll guess we’ll see Ogburn in the first game, or maybe really go nuts and use Tzamtzis or Jernigan… probably a 95% chance we see Ogburn though.

    Winnable regional.

Agree with Dr. How in the world are we in the Florida sub-regional? Is this basically saying we are the 16th seed? Yet, we were almost a national seed based on what the pundits are saying.

    Ugh.

Well, screw them. Go win this weekend and then bring on the next team in the path of the title.

To be honest, other than the subtle slap of being viewed as the #16 (which is likely not accurate, but perception….), I prefer Gainesville to Columbia. Since either us or UVa was going one place or the other, I think we made out OK. Also better than trucking across the country like Stanford, Purdue and Arizona are looking at.

I should point out that I’m ecstatic that, should the Wolfpack and Gators advance, I’ll be able to be there to watch.

I think a 4 seed (which is really what this is the basketball equivalent of) is fair for us this year.

We did have a bad ACCT which may have knocked us down some.

Just hope GT or CoC beats Florida in their regional, if not, well to be the man you gotta beat the man.

Heh… If the basketball team finished third in the conference, bowed out in the ACC semi’s and had the #9 RPI… State fans would revolt nationwide 🙂

I think this is one of those “well, you were a 3 seed, but we moved you down a seed line due to travel/conference”

Geography plays some part in this, but I don’t see what separates our season from, say, Virginia’s–other than, you know, taking 2 of 3 off them–and they get a much softer 2 seed traveling a greater distance (Oklahoma) plus a closer and more manageable super regional foe (South Carolina).

Assuming we win game one (always dicey), Rodon vs. Vandy will be a great matchup. Just not sure who we have to beat them a second time. Hope we do though, because I would absolutely love to see him take on Florida’s insane lineup.

By the way, any surprise that it’s UNC that benefits from the most egregious bit of committee politicking this year? ECU has no business in the field, and yet they’re the 2 seed in Chapel Hill. That matchup with Arizona isn’t imposing either–pencil in the Tar Heels for another Omaha run.

It helps that Vandy this year is not the Vandy of years past. Both ECU and UNC had a member on the selection committee.

I took a cursory glance at the stats and UNCW looks tougher than Vanderbilt; but you have to factor in the level of competition.

We did benefit from getting what I perceive to be the WEAKEST 4 seed in the field (one of 3 with losing records). Still, it’s baseball and anything can happen. They don’t seem to have any power arms though (or if they do, not much in the way of a strikeout pitch). I base this off of K/9. Disclaimer: numbers are very useful, but can be deceiving, so we shall see.

From the beginning of the season, Vandy has been pegged as a team that would start slow and then pick up steam toward the postseason. They fell just short in the SEC final, but look who they beat to get there. I mean, baseball’s a weird game and all that, but I would consider it a huge, huge stroke of luck if UNCW were to win that first game.

I’m actually a little interested in Georgia Tech popping up in Florida’s regional–with the way they’re finishing the season, and with how Florida has been prone to drop the odd series this year despite being easily the most talented team in the nation, there could be a little bit of intrigue there.

A true championship contender never complains about seeds, etc…you go out and play who they tell you to play. If you lose, then you were never a contender to begin with. Stop whining about Florida. First we have to get thru our little bracket anyway.
