2011 Football Updated Organizational Chart

Last week we discussed the inconsistent perceptions that many people hold regarding the future of the NC State 2011 football season. (click here)

Today, Coach O’Brien has released an updated ‘organizational chart’. (Before you take a look at today’s org chart, you can click here to our discussion of the Org Chart in the spring.) You can check it out by clicking here.

NOTABLE CHANGES
* R.J. Mattes is listed as the starter at left tackle, and he backed up by freshman Tyson Chandler.
* Mikel Overgaard is listed as the starter at right tackle, and he is backed up by sophomore Rob Crisp.
* James Washington is the starter at tailback, and he is backed up by senior Curtis Underwood. Returning starter Mustafa Greene suffered a foot injury in spring practice.
* McKay Frandsen and Markus Kuhn listed as starters at defensive end and defensive tackle respectively.
* Jarvis Byrd the starter at boundary corner and David Amerson at field corner. C.J. Wilson is now backing up Amerson.
* Niklas Sade (K), Wil Baumann (P), and Scott Thompson (LS) are all special teams starters as true freshmen.

LOTS of juniors and seniors sitting at the top of this chart. On one hand, I feel really good about that dynamic as we head into the fifth year of Coach O’Brien’s leadership of the program. That is exactly what you would hope to see in a program that has been building. On the other hand, I’m not 100% convinced that the level of talent of the back-ups is currently at a level where we don’t run the risk of a big drop-off in the coming years. This leads me to wonder aloud, “Is the 2011 season a potential near term ‘peak’ for the football program?’

Mustafa won’t be the starter? Wasn’t he more productive than Washington last year? Spring practice was a while ago. Is he on the mend?

  2. Packfan28 07/22/2011 at 2:13 PM #

Mustafa isn’t listed as one or two, which tells me it is still an injury situation.

“This leads me to wonder aloud, “Is the 2011 season a potential near term ‘peak’ for the football program?”

I feel that way also, but I would throw in 2012 as well.

I think recruiting this year will be critical. Don’t get wrong it is important every year but if we want keep building we do not want that drop off in 2013 that seems to be on t he horizon. The kids we recruit this year will be vital in that year and 2014

I would bet against a pronounced drop-off. For example, we will only know how much it cost NCSU for Russell Wilson to go to Wisc. when Glennon has a few games under his belt. Some of these guys are just unknowns, but we don’t have to assume it’s bec they aren’t very good. They were simply behind a good player until this year.
Some of them, like Creecy, were very well-regarded recruits that we can generally expect to contribute when their time comes. And there are THREE qb recruits this year already for 2012, in addition to a true freshman (Taylor) and redshirt frosh (Brosius). That’s one position you don’t want to be short-handed on, so I’m relieved to see that TOB is ON IT.

Attrition may be the greatest cause for concern again, if NCSU is really unlucky. We just have to hope that we’re not snake-bitten again anytime soon. Or lose numerous players due to NCAA investigations. 😉

I think we have fairly good starters, at the least, nearly all over, along with mostly backups with good experience. Only 11 second-stringers this year are underclassmen. Seems like it was more like 15 or so the past couple years.

Only 5 second-stringers are freshmen, (not incl. kickers), compared to, i think, about 9-10 last year. I get the impression that we have more depth than we’ve had in a few years.

You have to be excited about the secondary if Rashard Smith didn’t make the 2 deep. This will be a major upgrade to last years D!

I know Crisp was a big time recruit. must be developing slow, and I would think maturing as a lineman would be a slow process.

  7. primacyone 07/22/2011 at 3:18 PM #

You’ve got to give Earl Wolfe some major props. He was an unrecruited safety coming out of high school that just showed up to TOB’s first camp and earned a scholarship. He has worked his arse off the past couple years.

  8. packhammer 07/22/2011 at 3:21 PM #

Hey! Wait a minute here. What happened to Russell Wilson? He has another year of eligibility I think.

Just kidding. Yall have a good weekend.

  9. primacyone 07/22/2011 at 3:23 PM #

^^^Crisp will get plenty of snaps.

  10. Prowling Woofie 07/22/2011 at 3:36 PM #

If Crisp is second string, then Overgaard must be kicking butt…

I like this two deep, with the inclusion of Greene once he’s healthy.

Remember, TOB likes to put the org chart as a way to motivate some players. This is not how the depth chart will be in September.

I just hope for a serious injury-free fall practice.

Seems recruiting under TOB has been a good class every other year, so I predict we have a good class this year. UNC-Cheats problems, Cutliff showing he can’t fix Duke, Wake back to being wake, adn ECU without Holtz should equal an upswing for us instate. Debo on the hot seat, and BC headed southward should help TOB and staff in other areas also. I think the stabilty of our staff shows we headed in the right direction.

  13. NCSU88 07/22/2011 at 5:15 PM #

I really want to see improvement in our kicking game. Any word on the new guys?

  14. Dogbreath 07/22/2011 at 7:26 PM #

Do our lineman have beards yet? We need lineman with beards if we want to compete.

  15. BJD95 07/22/2011 at 7:30 PM #

2012 will be the peak year. After that, we’ll go back to being NC State.

Hey, better than nothing. I’ll take it.

  16. tuckerdorm1983 07/22/2011 at 7:44 PM #

I think that TOB is building a solid program with a strong pipline of players. He takes players that are 3 star or less and turns them into solid football players after 5 years. When the program has even more sucess, then he will get even better recruits. I have faith in him. I don’t like some of his conservative play calling, but I think we are in for many years of winning seasons, bowls and playing in the ACC championship game every now and then when FSU has an off year.

  17. chriscgray 07/22/2011 at 9:33 PM #

I have a hard time believing Underwood is even our 3rd best option. Washington however seems to be productive when in the game. My question is where is Tony Creecy and Barnes at? I would think one of those guys could turn out this year.

    the old ‘good news/bad news’….
+1 hungwolf for talent playing in NC colleges.
-1 generally, NC players are not National talent.
NC’s very best athletes gravitate to Basketball.

  19. chriscgray 07/22/2011 at 9:39 PM #

BJD95 I don’t know about two years from now, but we don’t have to go back to the norm. If we win, whos to say we can’t pick recruiting up and get the right playmakers for the future. We have a pretty good 2 deep at every position, and there is no reason it cant stay that way. I definately dont think we have a lack of coaching like teams in the past, so why the lack of confidence?

  20. blpack 07/22/2011 at 9:54 PM #

I think we are in the second of a three year window to challenge for the divisional title. Not easy, but our best shot in a while. We do need to have a very good Feb 2012 in recruiting. Winning will get us there.

  21. hawk74 07/22/2011 at 10:10 PM #

I feel good about the football program in general with TOB at the helm. 3 star players that don’t Cheat (Cheaters Hill) and 3 star players that will give all they got will kick the Hills arse every year. Keep up the good work TOB

  22. TheCOWDOG 07/22/2011 at 11:19 PM #

Run, run, run. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

If Howard didn’t make enough of a move to climb the ladder this spring, I’m afraid that for the first time in this wide out’s life, there is no confidence in the corps. Bet ya never thought you’d hear it from me.

However, let us be reminded that until game week, this is still only what we called ” The Laundry List. “

  23. bTHEredterror 07/23/2011 at 3:25 AM #

WR is the key, with the obvious exception of Glennon. Somebody needs to step up as a deep threat, and hopefully Palmer can be a waterbug that causes problems on short patterns. There are some different options, so we can shuffle guys around until something fits.

The rookie specialists need to be special, and the D needs to provide some short fields. The defense I’m surprisingly confident about. Those embarassing displays of ’09 seem so long ago now.

Creecy will see the field plenty, IMO, as the season unfolds. And hopefully they’re just holding Moose out as a precaution. Barnes was hurt so early LY its hard to say how good he is. Underwood is a 3 yards and a cloud guy, and he is getting a nod right now because he is 5th year player who took one for the team as true frosh.

Agree with CD, this is just to push some buttons and reward team leaders at this point. Until week one this is written in pencil.

  24. wolffpride 07/23/2011 at 7:20 PM #

Our D is going to be nasty this year. Our secondary is definitely loaded. I am psyched to see our linebacking core and D-line in action. For Kuhn and Slay to beat out Sweezy is big. Sweezy is a beast, so is Darryl Cato-Bishop at DE, meaning that Frandsen must be pretty good.

Our recruiting is legit…don’t buy into the recruting hype. Just look at Miami and Clemson, even Carolina as of recent. They have top 25 classes and still can’t win sh!t. Russell Wilson, Nate Irving, George Bryan, Audie Cole, Earl Wolfe, and Phillip Rivers were all 2 star prospects coming out of highschool. We were the only school to offer Rivers as a QB.

If you have coaches that run an effective system and know how to recruit for that system then you will have success. TOB gets the players that fit his system. With some 9 and 10 win seasons, we will attract 4 and 5 star skill players.

Hungwolf and Tuckerdorm1983 are right on the money with their posts.

Don’t doubt the wolfpack’s future, not now, not when we finally have some momentum.

    thx 4 a non-UNX/Duke post.
    i’m so over that.
