N&O: Puts McAdoo/Honor Court Failure On The Front Page

Thorp said he wished someone in the university had caught the plagiarism in McAdoo’s paper before the Wolfpack fans did, but he also said the handling of McAdoo’s academic misconduct does not suggest the need for an overhaul of the honor court.

You mean before your AD and university attorney asserted to the NCAA that, other than the sources page, it was all his own work?

There’s actually a bombshell in this article…It’s way deep in the article – but it constitutes an independent investigation alone:

Several responses suggested preferential treatment for student-athletes by UNC officials or the honor court.

“The evidence of cheating could not have been more obvious, and the excuse given was completely implausible,” one wrote. “Also, this case dealt with a student-athlete, and I found the interventions from the athletics department asking that the case not be brought before the honor court unethical.”

I was just coming in to post the same thing, chop. That is a(nother) major allegation.

I think at this point, UNX is trying to overwhelm the system with failures. We need a spreadsheet to track the various prongs of this whole mess. Someone will make a fortune on a book about this.

I’m guessing UNC History Professor Jay Smith has tenure. LMAO. I suspect Dickie B will have no comment until he announces his resignation/retirement.

He really should not only be banned from NCAA sports, he should be out of school for this level of plagiarism.

So how is it he not only remains in school, but the offered him a J-O-B??? And no one in the media is hitting them hard on that? When you can’t pay someone hush money, you give them a job.

Thorp’s “wishing” has the air of the end of a Scooby Doo episode. “I would have gotten away with it, if not for you meddling kids!”

The other thing that sticks with me is how – in open court – McAdoo prominently rolled his eyes at being called a cheater by the NCAA’s attorney. If that’s not a perfect example of a culture of cheating – where cutting and pasting from books and the internet hardly makes one worthy of being labelled “cheater” – I don’t know what is.

  8. mushypulp 07/17/2011 at 10:18 AM #

Rolling his eyes….WTF! For that he deserves a public flogging by the Old Well.

  9. TeufelWolf 07/17/2011 at 10:19 AM #

I love the title, “obvious plagiarism”. Also the “39 percent solution”; how clever. “The evidence of cheating could not have been more obvious….the athletic department asking that the case not be brought before the honor court unethical”…Their own faculty is calling them out…hilarious! I support Butch & Jay Smith!

  10. TruthBKnown Returns 07/17/2011 at 10:29 AM #

It’s ABOUT TIME their faculty called them out for something.

If the Honor Court is giving athletes a “pass” so to speak, this is equivalent to the readmission committee allegations at State in the 1989 “scandal”. Thorp (who should know better as a scientist) and Butch should resign at a minimum. Something is rotten at Carborro Tech!

All that being said, I feel that it is unrealistic to expect these players to function both as de facto professional athletes (without any compensation other than their scholarship) and university students of any legitimacy. That is a problem beyond the discussion here.

Let’s not forget that tutor Wiley was on Butchie’s personal payroll while she WAS handing out money to his football players. Why the N&O and the Board of Governors do not see a correlation there is beyond any solid reasoning…

This has become the gift that KEEPS ON GIVING….

  13. JeremyH 07/17/2011 at 11:59 AM #

This is a problem with the athletic department (and of course, higher).
Although I do not think the other programs should have postseasons banned, like the football program should, but all programs should be placed on some sort of probation, which in essence would enable the NCAA to help UNC learn how to act as a compliant university.

Thorp is a scientist? It’s all clear now.

A recent UNC Law Review article refers to plagiarism being called an epidemic of “intellectual rape”.

  16. MattN 07/17/2011 at 12:36 PM #

“I found the interventions from the athletics department asking that the case not be brought before the honor court unethical.”

That. Is. HUGE! The athletic department asking the honor court to look the other way?

    I’m speakless….

    This is too FUNNY!

Thorpe as the chancellor / leader (LMAO) stated that he “wished” they would have caught the issue before WOLFPACK FANS. Let’s just say that we WOLFPACKERS are used to having to work for a GRADE, whereas in Cheater’s Hill, it’s unnecessary. This is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE, as the CHANCELLOR, he should want to know how the problem wasn’t discovered sooner. But he knew why, it was a student-athlete and they just wanted to move him through the system.

The more he continues to discuss the issue, the more the academic integrity at unc goes down the tube. The system is NOW broken only because the process has been exposed and they wish they hadn’t gotten caught.

In your most imaginative state, you could never have dreamed this would be unfolding as it is. The University at Cheater’s Hill, is becoming “The Funniest Show on Earth” and we can thank – the BOT, BOG, thorpe, baddour, davis, and the acc commissioner.

Here’s my theory – People copy like crazy because they are never taught how to transpose their thoughts on paper. To put your thoughts on paper, you have to be able to gather info from other sources, think about the info you gathered and then put your own thoughts down about that info. You better be sure you also reference that info, because no idea is truly original, it has been influenced by other sources.

The sad thing is, cheating doesn’t just happen at the secondary and undergraduate levels. I’ve seen several instances where faculty have been dismissed where they fear the “publish or perish” philosophy and then crank out a document that has been plagiarized from another source. If the people that are supposedly grading these papers are also cheating, it displays a true “lack of institutional control.”

I can completely understand evenmore as to why this has all happened at UNC-Chapel Hill: When you hire a crook to coach your football team, what else can you expect. “Carboro Tech” is in complete denial!!! Thorp, Dickie, and Butch should be fired alone with the professor that let it happen. This business of not having enough time to investigate is BS!!!!!!!!!! A thorough investigation from folks from the COW COLLEGE ain’t bad, partner. GO PACK!!!!!!!!

  20. stejen 07/17/2011 at 1:02 PM #

In some ways I think the most important thing here is that this is now gone national and the N&O (gulp) had no choice but to publish the story. People ask what did Butch know but never reported. I want to know what the N&O knew but never reported. Had Russel Wilson or TOB been seen within a mile of a bar, rest assured, we all would have known about it the next day in the N&O.

GETTING STRAIGHT ANSWERS FROM CHAPEL HILL
testimony from the Micheal McAdoodoo case

Butch “Like I told the NCAA its not about who knew what when, but what who didn’t know and why they didn’t know what who knew.”

Dick “I mean “whats” on first base? or it is “I don’t know”. “Who” is in the outfield with “when” and “how”. They throw home to “hard to say” every time and that is the truth so help me God.”

Holden “My position, which has never changed through this whole mess, is Mairzy Doats And Dozy Doats and liddle lamzy divey A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?”

  23. Tampa-Pack 07/17/2011 at 1:43 PM #

Surprised to hear that cover-ups occurred at UNX with with metronome regularity …really, really I am…. [/sarcasm] at this point with each day the scandal grows, one can only hope it spills across the hall into other sports… you have to be certain that’s all they are hoping to prevent at this point – seems like everything football related is already gone (whether they choose to believe it or not)

  24. wolfpacker 07/17/2011 at 1:47 PM #

So, what the Chancellor at unc has admitted is that NC State fans are far more capable of finding out the facts than the entire process at unc -Cheater’s Hill? This has to be a DREAM!

    This is absolutely HILARIOUS!

unc’s in state rival, NC STATE fans are making the administration at unc look totally incompetent. This is better than winning a national championship by cheating. Because their entire system is a JOKE!

It’s front page news and the WOLFPACK Fans, are SCHOOLING the unc administration in how to do THEIR JOB. What unc had 2 years and multiple channels to uncover, the WOLFPACK Fans discovered in less than 15 minutes.

That’s because a degree from NC STATE is a reward for hard work, not cheating.

  25. choppack1 07/17/2011 at 2:34 PM #

I just can’t get over the silence of the editorial board and non-UNC grad on the BOG…I mean – how can Thorp and Baddour possibly be trusted at this point.

They’ve positively proven one of two things:
    1. They can’t be trusted to conduct a thorough investigation.
    2. They are covering up the resuls.
