Losing the Bubble: Where Yow is Heading

UPDATE: The following was written in the hours before news broke that Mark Gottfried would be NC State’s new men’s basketball coach. It’s still interesting to note the blunt nature of Debbie Yow and how she has presented the NCSU coaching job.  It shows that she does not want to “lure” anyone to a position they don’t feel capable of fulfilling.  Regardless of what is said or not said, Mark Gottfried is fully aware of the condition of the NCSU head coaching position and should be fully aware of what challenges lay before him.  Enjoy.

——————————

Yow’s letter sent last night to the fanbase sent shockwaves throughout the NC State fanbase. It appeared as if NC State AD Debbie Yow was confirming everyone’s suspicions that the NC State men’s basketball coaching search was coming up awry.

There have been telephone conversations with successful coaches that did not develop into meetings — sometimes because we did not wish to pursue those coaches further and sometimes because the coach involved is happy where he is.

The reaction last night, for those living under rocks, was one of complete panic and total meltdown. We had been ‘turned down’ by Greg Marshall (Witchita State) and Shaka Smart (VCU), our two primary “mid-major” coaches and Mick Cronin (Cincinnati) announced he was no longer on the market. This was damning since all indications were that Arizona head coach Sean Miller and Texas head coach Rick Barnes were not interested in the NC State job which is estimated to come with a compensation of up to $3+ million and give a coach the opportunity to cement themselves on a national stage in the ACC against well-respected competition.

In the midst of all this, it appears that we may have lost the bubble on what we want our AD to be doing to promote our coaching position. Many fans were torn to hear their Athletic Director admitting that the NC State basketball program was in “poor shape” and that it would be “a challenge” to rebuild our reputation in the league and nationally. To have the captain of your ship admit that you were sinking was pretty demoralizing. But, to all those who read that and are claiming the sky is falling, I say this: WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU EXPECTING HER TO SAY?

Seriously, when you think about everything Debbie Yow has been to this point, she has been direct, professional, and brutally honest with the media. Let me first ask this: does anyone think we are in great shape? Any takers? Did she say anything that wasn’t true? What she is doing is letting the coaching candidates know EXACTLY what they are getting into, and for good reason:

Finding a coach with the fight and fire to do this job has been a challenge. That said, we will find an excellent college coach who shares the vision of what State Basketball can become and is up for the challenge.

When NC State finds a coach, that coach should be 110% aware of exactly what challenges they face because only then will they know how to bring us back to where we need to be. Yow doesn’t seem to be admitting defeat or letting the fanbase know we are failing, but instead letting us know what her expectations are and that she has goals for our men’s coaching position.

So when you look at the facts, all we know are two things: (1) several candidates are off the market and (2) Debbie Yow is being brutally honest with candidates to ensure we have a good “fit”. Should we be worried? We’re NC State; you bet your ass we should be worried. But at the same time, it seems like based on what we know, all we can be assured of is that NC State’s coach will know what they’re up against and has agreed to take on the challenge. Brutal honesty is a foreign concept to us NC State fans after the past several years of bad administration and incompetent ADs, but hopefully we can all be patient enough, without losing our minds, to see if brutal honesty is the way to go.

Great read & I couldn’t agree more..I’m proud to call DY our AD & have a high level of respect for her & faith in her..GO PACK!!

I took her message to be to the fanbase, aka us. Something like, “Folks we are not going to get what you consider a home run. Adjust your expectations, we will get a coach. It may not be what you want or who you want, but it’s going to be what we need.”

  3. Master 04/05/2011 at 10:03 PM #

I think the letter last night was designed to really lower our expectation (which it did) knowing that any hire after that would be viewed as a success (which it does!) I’m OK with how this turned out.

  4. WolftownVA81 04/05/2011 at 10:09 PM #

Still, to me the letter was a very strange tactic. I like her directness and feel like we’ll see results soon or else. At this point who knows. Guess we’ll have to see how this plays out. Hopefully we’ll hit a home run or two with the assistants and the players will be on board with the new staff. No where to go but up.

FWIW, one of the guys on the radio (name escapes me, but he’s a Crimson Tide fan) said that Gottfried is a known recruiter. He is probably a good hire JUST for those reasons. As I stated in the article, he should know what he is here for and what challenges he faces. Keeping the talent we have on the team is going to be an important step to moving forward and rebuilding the program.

  6. shs28078 04/05/2011 at 10:33 PM #

BS! She should have said “NC State has everything in place TODAY to field a competitive team, except a competent head coach.”

It’s true, and sounds a lot better. What if you were a player on the team or a verbal commit (6th ranked center in the country, for instance) and heard those words from your ad. If I was, and was transferable I would regard Sid’s resignation as a get out of jail free card.

I think Yow bringing up that Every coach mentioned we hadnt been to ncaas was excuse making. Ie it wasnt my incompetent search, it was Sid’s fault.

NCStatePride: That’s not what she said. She said that each coach noted that we hadn’t been to the NCAAT in 5 years and that showed that this job wasn’t going to be a simple plug-and-play effort, or as she words it, the job “will require special effort to rebuild”. I don’t know one Wolfpack fan that would say NC State is in strong shape and a coach can just waltz in here and take us to the big dance tomorrow. Any momentum we had is dead and has been for some time. All Debbie Yow said in her letter is what we, as fans, have been saying for a few years now. And if we noticed that NC State is in hot crap, what makes you think someone interviewing for a job hasn’t noticed the same?

Bottom line, you are entitled to your opinion, but I don’t think we need to make-up things that Yow didn’t say or even insinuate. (i.e., “it’s Sid’s fault”).

Although I think Yow has yet to ever established herself at MD or State, I think she was very trueful in her letter. We are in bad shape and have been since Sloan and V left. Since then we haven’t come close to greatness. Nothing wrong with Yow telling the truth. Shows she’s honest.

  8. Wufpacker 04/05/2011 at 11:09 PM #

I have to agree that if she felt a need to send such a letter, the phrasing of it could have been significantly better. While I don’t think she was trying to point the finger (at anyone), I can’t help but think it was a ploy to lower expectations. I don’t want to think this, but I can’t see any other good reason for it, especially considering the timing.

That being said, I also don’t think the search was incompetent.

  9. tractor57 04/05/2011 at 11:21 PM #

I didn’t have an issue with the letter. It was like Yow has been since coming to State – direct even blunt and brutally honest. That trait is rare in such positions granted but it is also quite refreshing.

Face it folks there is much to do – the past 20 years prove that.

I’m good with her and with MG.

  10. Wufpacker 04/05/2011 at 11:23 PM #

I agree tractor. The letter didn’t bother me at all….last night.

But why send it if she has Gottfried ready to be introduced today?

  11. ryebread 04/05/2011 at 11:27 PM #

I think Yow flat out mishandled this.

I think that the “plan C” candidates (Marshall and Cronin) were sent packing — the timing was too coincidental once Smart didn’t accept. She knew when she sent out that email on Tuesday night that she had Gottfried under contract. With a coach under contract ready to be announced the next day, why even send out that communication? What difference is 24 additional hours going to make at that point?

She sent that email out to temper expectations. That was the wrong move regardless of the scenario, but particularly given she was going to announce a hire the next day. It was extremely poorly written as well and definitely reeked of raising the white flag.

For those who don’t agree, how would you like it if your new boss sent out an email to all of your new coworkers and clients saying “our job sucks, we couldn’t get anyone good to accept” the day before hiring you? She didn’t exactly set Gottfried up for success by her actions in the last 24 hours.

Yow’s honeymoon is over. IMHO, she’s officially on the clock.

I had reservations when we hired her and I’m afraid they’re coming to fruition. We’d better hope that TOB hangs on longer than she does because I don’t want her anywhere near another revenue sport hire. I do think she’s going to do fantastic things with our non-revenue sports.

  12. packalum44 04/05/2011 at 11:56 PM #

Letter worked. It lowered the bar to the point where I sighed relief at this announcement…I expected much worse. I also believe Yow AND Woodson did the best they could. Our job is not perceived as highly as we think among coaches. This search validated that in a HUGE way.

  13. packgrad2000 04/06/2011 at 5:12 AM #

I couldn’t disagree more. That letter was a total disaster, and I completely disagree with the assessment of the program. Herb or Sid could argue that they were handed a rebuilding job, but not Gottfried. Are we on probation? Do we have just a handful of scholarship players on the roster? Did we just graduate 4 out of 5 starters? As Ovies put it, not winning ≠ poor shape. The program is in great shape, with a good set of returning players, no probation or dark clouds hanging over the program. Good grief, this site has argued for the last month (and I agree!) everything NCSU has to offer and why a coach should want this job, and now you have an author agreeing with the BS that DY spouted in that letter (specifically the part about the program being in poor shape…everything else was fine)???

I think she was trying to lower expectations and trying to shift the blame from her not being able to land a good coach to say, “Hey, the program’s in crappy shape…don’t blame me!” When in fact, she points out GW sabotaging the search. If that’s true, that’s her baggage, not NC State’s. My opinion of DY has gone down after this search, although certainly it was handled better than Lee. I guess it’s kind of like our new coach: better than the previous one.

  14. NCStatePride 04/06/2011 at 8:16 AM #

You’re more than welcome to disagree, but I feel like any program that has been finishing in the bottom half of their conference is a “rebuilding” job. From yesterday’s presser, that’s definitely how Gottfried is taking it.

Actually, I mention in this article that the next coach should, at least, know that they are at a job that will involve rebuilding, and know that they are here to compete with our rivals and for championships. From yesterday’s conference, whether you like Gottfried or not, he definitely understands all this and has agreed to the challenge.

  15. shs28078 04/06/2011 at 8:22 AM #

The program is not in shambles. We had major coaching issues. When wad thr last time we had this much talent and potential on the team?!?!! I think you have to go back to Fire and Ice.
Herb did far better with much less.

fwiw I love Herb and Sid but am glad they aren’t our coach.

Please tell me whats missing. Talent, money, commitment, facilities, fan base. Check, check, check, check and check. We just need a maestro.

  16. packgrad2000 04/06/2011 at 9:47 AM #

    @NCStatePride:

If you just look at it like that, how’s that any different than the national media looking at Herb and saying, “All he did was go to 5 straight NCAA’s and the fans drove him off.” Sure, on the surface it looks like a rebuilding job because we’ve finished near the bottom recently. On the surface it looked like Herb was doing great too, but we all know how bare he left the cupboard. All he did was take us to 5 straight NCAA appearances but the reality was, Sid walked into a rebuilding job. Herb certainly did too, and for sure Les did since the program really was in shambles and on probation. Scott Wood agrees:

“Sophomore Wolfpack guard Scott Wood thought the team was in better shape, with four starters back from a 15-16 team, than Yow’s assessment in the email.”

“With this team, I don’t think there’s any reason to rebuild,” Wood said. “You have all the talent there. I was kind of confused by what she meant by it.”

Of course Gottfried is going to play it as a rebuilding job…it’s in his best interest to say he took a program that was in shambles! That’s his excuse if he doesn’t make the NCAA for two more years and to his glory if he does. It’s a win-win for him. There was a great article here a while back on how UNC football every year makes excuses about being a “young team” every year. Every coach needs an out and a way to lower expectations.

As shs28078 points out, all that’s missing is a good coach. Now if Harrow, Leslie, and others decide to leave, well then he may just have a rebuilding job after all.

  17. shs28078 04/06/2011 at 10:02 AM #

Since Fire and Ice, we’ve had 6 (six) players drafted into the NBA. The current team has three that will probably be drafted.

Most talent in 20 years does not equal a program in shambles.

Yow’s letter was awful. on so many levels.

  18. NCStatePride 04/06/2011 at 12:25 PM #

Well, then I guess you guys are upset with Gottfried then because he obviously views this as a rebuilding process. He flat out said so in his press conference. Take your beef up with him.

  19. ryebread 04/06/2011 at 1:05 PM #

NCStatePride: How could he not after the AD is obviously advertising it in that fashion? If my boss is calling it that, I surely will as well.

I’d argue that SL left us with far more talent than he inherited, talent at every position and some good potential talent for the future. We just need to keep the kids around and there’s a pretty strong base.

  20. TruthBKnown Returns 04/06/2011 at 1:48 PM #

Gottfried can’t really say, “this is not a rebuilding job”. That would be like admitting any success next year was already going to happen. He has to play it like it’s a rebuilding job, so he can take credit for rebuilding us if and when we succeed.

  21. NCStatePride 04/06/2011 at 1:49 PM #

I think your beef is over the definition of “poor shape”. We have “great players” with no developed skills that have lived a year in a failed system. I’m not even attempting to claim Gottfried has a worse situation than Lowe with respect to the talent, but Gottfried is stepping into a program that over the last 5 years has posted a much worse record than Sendek had.

FWIW, the comparison that “I would agree with the media on Sendek” is just ill-informed, honestly. The media was claiming that Sendek was “as good as we should expect to be”. Their analysis of Sendek’s record isn’t what was inaccurate, it was where they felt NC State “deserved” to be.

  22. Wufpacker 04/06/2011 at 2:36 PM #

My take is that need to “rebuild” is not from the ground up, but rather the program’s internal attitudes and expectations, as well as the methods/abilities of the coaching staff to express those attitudes and expectations to the players and recruits. Not to mention the need of coaching them up somewhat.

Additionally, the image of the program as viewed from the outside needs a “rebuild” as well, but if the issues above are handled properly, the views and perceptions from the outside looking in will take care of themselves. Similarly, so will wins.

Can’t say if those things are what Yow and Gottfried are referring to, but considering they both have publicly complimented the history, traditions, and infrastructure (facilities, etc.) currently in place, I’m not sure what else they could be referring to.

  23. Texpack 04/06/2011 at 4:32 PM #

Do our players need to learn how to win? Yes
Do our players need to learn how to play defense? Yes
Do our players need to learn how to give maximum effort consistently? Yes
In the composite ACC standings for the last 20 years are we DFL? Yes

Do we have better facilities and resource for our program than half of the ACC? Yes
Do we have better fan support than half of the ACC? Yes
Is the talent on our roster at or above average for the ACC? Yes

Based on those criteria I would say it’s not clear cut that our program needs to be rebuilt. I do think, however, that item 4 speaks louder than any of the others. It’s pretty tough to say that you have the worst conference record in the ACC over the past 20 years and then say the program doesn’t need rebuilding. The big difference between DY and the previous regimes is that she thinks we can be in the NCAA tournament within two years (based on the contract kicker) and God only knows how long Uncle Jed thought was long enough to wait.

When we interview people for jobs in my department, we devote part of every interview to telling all about the worst parts of the job. It’s the only way you can be fair. The major difference in the situation with our basketball program is that the warts of the program are pretty publicly known to anyone who cares enough to pursue the job.

  24. packgrad2000 04/06/2011 at 7:00 PM #

I didn’t say you “would agree with the media on Sendek.” I made the comparison that like the national media looking at Sendek, they thought the program was in great shape (it wasn’t). Similarly, you and DY (and from the reactions to the letter, very few other Wolfpack fans) say the program’s in “poor shape.”

Sure the national media thought we should have been happy with mediocre. That wasn’t the point I brought up. They never bring up the fact that he got out when he knew the cupboard was quite bare. That certainly played a factor on the timing of him leaving.

The point is if you look below the surface, the success (or lack thereof) over the previous five years might have little to do with the shape of the program. If you define it that way, then you have to say Sendek left the program in pretty good shape, which I think many in the national media probably think.

  25. shs28078 04/06/2011 at 7:07 PM #

Making the tourney means top 50-55. Not too high of a bar.

I think we can do it next year.
