Interview from Spring Practice; National guys continue to ignore facts proving they are wrong

CBSSports.com: Here in Carter-Finley, the fan base has really embraced you in this program. You were 5-1 at home in 2010, with 7 games on the schedule in 2011. How important has this stadium become as a home field advantage?

TOB: No I think it’s huge, we have tremendous fans. They love their football, they love their team. They show up as soon as the tailgate lots open, some of them before the tailgate lots open You know we had third largest crowd in history last year and set a single-season attendance record. I think it speaks volumes to their passion for the Wolfpack football team and I think our kids feed off that.

Full interview here.

How is this possible with several national talking heads saying one of the problems at NC State is our fans?

If you haven’t noticed on the radio, then the national guys are back at it trashing NC State’s basketball program. Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports even had the audacity to say that the perception of the NC State job is that you have to cheat to win. I asked him if you have to cheat at VCU to win and got no response.

This hire is really important to their credibility. They want to be proven right about the NC State job, so they are doing everything they can to promote their point of view. It is a shame our local talk radio guys give them a stage to take shots at NC State.

As I pointed out yesterday, NC State basketball coaches Herb Sendek and Sidney Lowe have ranked in the top 15 in the nation in signing top 100 players, top 50 players, and top 10 players since 1998. At the same time, neither coach had the program performing at top 15 levels or even top 25 levels during these years.

The recruiting numbers linked above prove it is definitely possible to build a top 15 program at State with the right coach in place. Our program had performed at that level up until 1990 and it has attracted recruits at that level for the last decade+. Those recruits came to State under two different coaches: Sendek with moderate success and Lowe with absolutely zero success.

Additionally, Sendek’s experience at Arizona St. has given us five years of data that prove just how great he had it in Raleigh with those bad NC State fans. Clearly, those recruits weren’t just choosing NC State because of Sendek because his recruiting has deteriorated since leaving one of the best areas to live in the entire country:

The last 4.5 years show exactly how the NC State head coaching position is actually an outstanding opportunity. The records of Sendek and Lowe show that a large part of Sendek’s success was actually the resources, fan support, financial support, facilities, location, school, conference affiliation, etc…that were at Sendek’s disposal during his 10 years in Raleigh. Sendek is the same coach today that he was 5 years ago at NC State. In fact, he is likely a better coach today because he has more experience and his reputation has grown. So what changed when he went to Arizona St. especially when you consider he is no longer facing Duke and UNC and coaching in the same area code as Coach K and Roy?

He is at Arizona St. He is working from a different platform with fewer resources. That is all that has changed.

If you don’t believe me, then go ask the mean ASU fans here. Don’t they know they have a coaching genius leading their program?

Why is it that these national guys ignore Sendek’s plight in the desert and statistics like the top 15 recruiting haul for NC State basketball coaches? We have real data to measure the opportunity at NC State yet all these guys can say is we have bad fans(Goodman called us worse than that) and that proximity to Duke and UNC is a problem even though Sendek is thousands of miles away doing worse now.

As bad as this fanbase deserves a championship, TOB deserves one even more. I hope he gets one while he’s here.

  2. Wolfman 9806 03/29/2011 at 10:15 AM #

Man, could you imagine if we could renew that support of our BBall program. TOB is the man.

  3. Baylisascaris 03/29/2011 at 10:41 AM #

LOL, TOB knows bad fans when he sees them. He was at BC.

  4. TheCOWDOG 03/29/2011 at 11:12 AM #

Without Wilson and Irving, the spotlight may be squarely placed on TOB this season. Perhaps this year will actually be conceived as a “typical”
Tom O’brien team by the writers.

Comparisons of State/BC quarterbacks and OL will likely be aplenty.
I for one, think that those comparisons will be of the positive kind on the actul field of play.

    Good article. Thanks.

I don’t get it – is Goodman Sendek’s cousin or something ? Was he denied admission to NCSU ? Did a State guy snake his girl ?

Looking forward to another successful football season for TOB and crew – 9+ wins, thrash the Holes, win a bowl game…

“Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports even had the audacity to say that the perception of the NC State job is that you have to cheat to win.”

    Whose perception?

    Cheating, hunh?

Did he watch those Carowhina games during the ACC and NCAA tournaments?

Has he paid much attention to the UNC football scandal?

By contrast, our programs are squeaky clean. Maybe he’s trying to equate the sales of shoes and tickets for which Valvano was keelhauled as cheating. That’s lame.

Why does Goodman want to pick a fight with NC State fans?

Which local radio stations are airing this crap? Let’s tell what we think of this.

The crew we have in place understand the importance of connecting with fans. Treating our passion with respect. Case-in-point – My wife has sent several handwritten notes to TOB and lately one to Yow with her thoughts on program, hopes/aspirations, her input on future coaches, etc… In all cases we received handwritten notes in response. Short, but (seemingly) sincere. We’re not donors, no family connections to program, don’t attend games, nothing… we’re “just” fans. I have very high hopes for our future!

    Sendek – NCSU and ASU
    Pitino – Kentucky and Louisville
    Spurrier – Florida and SC
    Roy – Kansas and UNC

Same coach…much better recruiting at one school versus the other.

  11. SaccoV 03/29/2011 at 12:55 PM #

VaWolf, I see your point but Roy’s recruiting was as consistently high at Kansas. Guys like Paul Pierce, Raef LaFrentz, Jacque Vaughn, Drew Gooden were all top-level recruits, and he got all of them to play at Kansas. Spurrier is the perfect example of this, and perhaps these few wins will help him get over the hump, but in football terms, Saban and Roy are pretty much the same. Great success, and national recruiting done at two different schools with similar expectations and history.

“How much longer do you want to keep a coach who runs an offense as anemic as ASU has?”

I LOVE it!!! They now see what we suffered through on the offensive end for 10 years yet we were supposed to be “happy” with Him as Our coach. Thanks, but no thanks!!!

    Can’t wait for Football!!!!!!!

” …but in football terms, Saban and Roy are pretty much the same. Great success, and national recruiting done at two different schools with similar expectations and history. ”

Both were in pretty good recruiting areas at both of their respective jobs. This actually is only more support for Va’s point.

DU, great post. It’s only a matter of time. You can’t keep a lid on the kind of enthusiasm that Wolfpack fan base has for our teams. We’re pretty much there, thick or thin. Haters are going to keep hating on us, but we are going to prevail.

As far as the comparisons of other coaches mentioned above…

    Sendek…next.

Pitino…a great teacher of the game, I would argue that it is because of his coaching and teaching ability that brings the recruits and which has allowed him to continue to have success in the Big East at Louisville.

Spurrier…has shown he is able to do more with less, at least in the college game that is. He has greatly improved the South Carolina program in a relatively short period of time, while slowly winning more and more recruiting battles that used to be primarily won by Clemson and Georgia. People don’t give you a nickname like “the old ball coach” without a good reason. If he can land a quarterback with a brain, it’s over for the rest of the SEC…again.

Roy…doing well in Kansas vs UNC, let’s not forget that in both cases, he stepped into a program that was already stocked and ready for him. He did it at Kansas with Larry Brown’s recruits and he did it at UNC with Doherty’s recruits. Not much of a rebuilding scenario in either case. I don’t buy into his coaching prowess…never have, not at Kansas and not now. And with as much impropriety that has been found to have been taking place under the UNC football program, I find it hard to believe that the UNC basketball program could have zero similarities.

    ^pantherpack98, it’s deja vu.

    “The offense is remarkably ineffective.”

    check

“For almost the entire season, we did not seen in game adjustments and very little noticeable week-to-week solutions to the apparent problems.”

    check, check

Just remember guys, Goodman screws with us (and our fan base) on purpose.

He knows very little about STATE; and he doesn’t care to learn more. Accuracy is neither his purpose, nor his intent. He lacks talent. So, like so many media types, he resorts to mud-slinging. Sadly, this is his schtick.

I admit, it is hard not to fire back; especially when a heat-seeking tweet takes less than a couple of seconds to click-off. However, if we –
like we are known to do so very well – respond with holy fury, we just stoke the fire.

The internet allows hack writers/reporters like Goodman to generate “hits” and mentions. For some reason, Fox views this as a positive thing.

At the end of the day, though, Fox needs readers. Ignore both Goodman and Fox, and Fox may think better of letting a moron represent them in the age of instant, electronic media.

Regarding our coaching search, he knows little to nothing. He has no so-called credible “sources”. Like someone else said about our own Julius Hodge (and his latest irresponsible tweets), who in their right mind would entrust him with real (or breaking) news?

    Goodman’s bull-sh*t sources are just that … bull-sh*t.

For Goodman, and others like him, inciting the STATE fan base is nothing more than a self-promoting act.

Don’t let the b*stards drag you down …

how in the world can you say that ncsu fans are the worst and perceived as cheaters? that guy needs to quit smoking his lunch!! that really pisses me off. i have been a state fan since early in my life. i watched state win a national championship, twice! just because i expect us to be better and not accept ass whippings on a regular bases from quite possibly the most arrogant fans in the world, makes me a bad one!! damn !!! if unc fans had gone through what we have over the past twenty years you wouldn’t be able to find one. they had two bad years with brad and they got scarce. they also bitched and whined about losing, because they expect to win , something we aren’t allowed to do. well kiss my ass! sure, if i was duke or unc i would say what a good coach herb was especially if i was handing him his ass regularly.
i sure hope we score large on a basketball coach. so we can shut everyone’s mouth and find out who really is/are the best fans!! GO PACK

It’s funny how we keep jumping on one name as if it’s the answer and forget about the rest. What happend to Brad Stevens, He’s more remarkable than Smart. Is he out of the picture now?

Not to nitpick, but their bad years with with Matt (Doherty) not Brad (Daugherty).

Jeff Goodman is an absolute @$$ clown. Among his gems from last week’s interview on the Dan Patrick show (and I’m paraphrasing here):

    1) Jimmer Fredette is a product of the media, and there’s no way he would start at a major D1 school; he’s not as good as “the media” thinks he is…

Really Jeff? He took Brigham Young to within 4 minutes of a Final Four appearance. BRIGHAM YOUNG! Off the top my head, he dropped 30-something on Arizona, 25 on UCLA, 40 on UNLV, 43, 30, and 25 on San Diego State, 50-something on New Mexico, at least 30 in every NCAA game this season, plus at least 2 or 3 more 40 point games (yes, 40) against a few other teams. And it’s not like he’s at Duke or Kentucky, where talent is abundant and you don’t know who is going to shoot or get the ball late in the game…He’s at freakin BYU! Every person in the building knows who’s gonna shoot, and they still couldn’t stop him. Zona and UCLA did well this year, SDSU was in the top 10 all year and earned a 2 seed…just sayin, Fredette is NOT overrated. He’s a darn good college bball player, who cares if that translates to the NBA?
…and oh yeah, they took away his best teammate for having sex. And he STILL almost took them to the Final Four. Pretty good player, Jeff

2)Kemba Walker has no prayer of getting through the weekend (which means this past weekend) and taking UConn to the Final Four.

Now I realize it’s easy to pick on him now, having already seen the results and knowing UConn made it…but why count out Kemba Walker? Dude almost single-handedly willed UConn thru 5 games in 5 days over 5 RANKED teams in the BE Tourney, then dismantled his first 2 NCAA opponents with crossover, faders, assists..dude is good. Point is, if you guarantee something, you’d better be right, otherwise it’s just a guaranteed piece of….

    3) Derrick Rose doesn’t deserve the NBA MVP…I’m not even gonna elaborate on this one. U serious Jeff? Do watch sports, or just blow words out the side of your neck? They’re in 1st in the East by 2 games over the mighty Celtics. Other than Chicago fans or hardcore NBA fans, can anyone in here name 3 other Bulls? Me neither

    4) He covered all these topics in a 7 minute interview. Then these recent jabs at my beloved Wolfpack….go to Hell Jeff Goodman, you are an idiot.

    That is all.

  22. Fenrir 03/29/2011 at 5:09 PM #

you are correct, sir. please don’t let my misstep in the use of a name cloud the message i tried to convey.

  23. swamppack 03/29/2011 at 5:41 PM #

Pack fans do want it so badly right now. Unx fans feel they are entitled to it. It would be so great for the health of the ACC for State b-ball to get a great coach and have some long-awaited success. As opposed to holes fans, the Pack fans would APPRECIATE the success instead of acting like it’s thier God-given right.

I still say it’s going to take some major changes in the refereeing hierarchy to see anybody besides Duke be able to compete with unx. A coach for State anywhere close to K ‘s level will overcome most of the disparity, but light blue will always have an edge like things are now.

Thank you DY for a job well-done so far and thank you TOB for last season. WE want to see both of you do well so the university will do well.

The ECU, Clemson, and Maryland losses were hard to swallow last season, but the football program seems to be in much better shape than Chuck left it. Beating unx 4 seasons in a row has been too great.

Who cares what the media has to say these days? Most of it is just filler anyway. There are so many outlets now, a diluted product is bound to be served up on a regular basis.

@fenrir, It didn’t. Your overall point still stands.
