State/Wake ACC Opener Open Thread (Live Blog)

I hear tell that we play basketball today. I’m picking my kids up at the airport at 3:00, so I probably won’t watch or listen to very much of it. Wake is worse than most of the sub-200 RPI cupcake teams we’ve played the last few weeks, so today is really just an exercise in “disaster avoidance.” We can’t shit the bed at home like we did against Virginia in last year’s conference opener. I’m not optimistic at all about this Wolfpack team, but still expect we will beat the Deacs by 15+. And our RPI will probably drop as a result. Welcome to 2011 college basketball – tis a strange, wide open world this time around.

Have at it in the comments, mes amis.

Random Game Comments:
Tim Brando with Mike Gminski announcing. We can expect some thorough conditioning on understanding our place in the Big Four pecking order.

Starters:
Wake – Harris, Clark, Stewart, McKie, Desrosiers
State – Gonzalez, Brown, Wood, Leslie, Smith

Once again, Raycom’s HD feed is atrocious. I’m starting to think their HD cameras just don’t work well with red.

1st Half
18:46 – State 6-0; Bzdelik calls an early TO.

14:53 – State leads 11-7 on 4-of-8 FG (50%); Leslie and Smith each have four points, Wood with three.

Harrow checks in and reminds us immediately that shot selection is still not one of his priorities…although somehow he is still tied with Tracy as our leading scorer (11.3 ppg).

11:10 – State 19-16 on 7-of-17 FG (41%); Smith leads all scorers with eight points. So far, we’re not playing particularly well, but not particularly bad, either. Turnovers not an issue for either team, one apiece.

After a missed shot and an outlet pass by Walker to Clark, Wood is charged with a boneheaded intentional foul, an easy call.

7:57 – State 28-20. Until this point, Wake had kept par with State after the initial 6-0 run to begin the game. Going to commercial, with video of Wood’s intentional foul, Brando says: “Richard Howell decided to play huggie-bear and draw the intentional, but on the other end hits the trey…”

Gminski says that Yow is a win for State because she knows the culture. Doesn’t that go against everything we’re supposed to believe about our rightful place in the ACC?

They just showed highlights from the ’89 regular season finale in Greensboro, a 4 OT State victory to clinch the regular season title. For those that don’t remember (or tried to forget), that was back when we inexplicably sported blue trim on on unis. I was only 10 then, and I remember that, but I’m not sure I’ve ever heard a convincing argument as to why.

3:48 – State 28-27; Wake has taken advantage of five State turnovers over the past 4:17 to cut the lead to one. State is shooting 10-of-25 FG (40%) while Wake is shooting 11-of-26 (42%).

Half – State 40-30. Around the eight-minute mark State looked like it might pull away at 28-20, but Wake countered with a 7-0 run over the next 4:45. State took advantage of some defensive miscues by Wake and responded with its own 8-0 run over the final 2:05. Smith leads all scorers with 10 while Leslie has nine; for Wake, Stewart has eight while Clark has six. State shot 13-of-30 (43%) with six turnovers while Wake shot 12-of-33 (36%) with only two turnovers. State hit 11-of-12 (92%) FT.

Glaring stat of the half: 0; remarkably, the number of times Lowe’s predecessor was mentioned.

If there’s a chance you’ll be craving French Toast next week, you may want to get over to the grocery store soon, because Greg is calling for snow — and possibly the apocalypse (freezing rain) — Monday and Tuesday, and that means no bread, milk or eggs within 100 miles of Raleigh. Just be careful out there on this “blustery, snowy day.”

2nd Half

Brando’s poignant comment on Lowe’s tenure: “…Sometimes electrifying, and then pockets in the game where they just absolutely become invisible and allow leads to be blown.” This was during Wake’s 6-0 run to begin the half, and truer words have never been spoken.

15:36 – State 47-36. After Wake opened the half with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to four, State quickly responded once again with its own 7-0 run to push the lead to 11.

Wake’s big men overmatched down low and in foul trouble (Mescheriakov, 4; Desrosiers and Tabb, 3). State 14-of-16 FT (88%).

11:35 – State 57-42. The second half has been the Tracy and CJL show. Admittedly, this is a different team with Tracy in the lineup, apparently one that can score freely on Wake, because we’ve done a great job exploiting Wake’s weakness down low. We’re all thinking it, so I’m just going to say it: Wake is awful.

Brando, on State: “Must pundits believe this is an NCAA Tournament team this year, and one that can do some damage.” I don’t necessarily disagree that this *should* be the case, and would have been one I’d have agreed with back in November. But based on our 0-4 record against quality opponents out of conference, and no quality wins to date, this comment just doesn’t hold any merit.

6:01 – State 74-57. This is all State. Wake is doing a lot of things wrong, and we’re taking advantage.

2:03 – State 90-61. Pack piling it on now. CJW has 14 second-half points (16 total). This team is playing with enthusiasm and looks like its having fun.

Final – State 90-69 (ESPN.com Box Score)

This wasn’t a *great* win by any stretch, because Wake is clearly the conference’s worst team. However, it was a game at home we *should* have won, and *had* to win if we have any hopes of playing in the NCAAT, and we won; and winning is a lot more fun than losing, so I’ll take it. Let’s build on this win and take care of business on the road in Chestnut Hill Tuesday night.

I’ll just copy my forum post over here …

Gonna miss the game – but I’d actually like to have been there … bummer. But it might not be too much of a bummer b/c it might be really ugly.

If we could take some steps forward today and really look like the superior team and play w/ confidence that would be a great sign … big if’s for this team though.

Expect plenty of zone from Wake and plenty of 3’s and from what I’ve seen plenty of terrible shots.

I’m not sold that we win this game easy … we could, but we’ve shown zero killer instict much less ability to be a good, cohesive, aggressive team.

That said, I’m not one to usually say we “should” win a game, but we should win this game – we have to. Good defense and confidence on offense will get it done. But this is a Sid Lowe Wolfpack squad, so who knows what we’ll see. I said on a previous thread I expected two close games with Wake with probably one loss … I’m afraid that’s probably accurate. It’s really unfortunate b/c Wake is terrible … then again we’re not so great ourselves.

Feels weird to say this after exhibiting such little confidence and being a Debbie Downer, but Go Pack.

Sagarin has us about a 14point favorite (based on YTD performance of both teams)… We need to win by about 20 or more IMO to lend any validity to the “Tracy Smith = NCAA Berth” argument…

  3. SaccoV 01/08/2011 at 3:23 PM #

Not to hijack, but the wrestling team is currently in action on GoPack.com. Although I’ve spent much of my post-NCSU life bashing GoPack, I have to say I like this a great deal.

  4. roanwolf 01/08/2011 at 3:24 PM #

latest go-to statement for broadcasters watching the pack: “you know Wood is not someone that can create his own shot. He really needs to have someone to set him up.” Heard that a couple of games ago and it has filtered into the regular season.

  5. Lunatic Fringe 01/08/2011 at 4:13 PM #

Cardiac – the must win by 20 is just an odd statement. I am not sure I follow you at all.

It is nice to see a NCSU team that can consistently rebound. 10 offensive rebounds and 13 second chance points.

  6. Lunatic Fringe 01/08/2011 at 4:26 PM #

5-6 more offensive rebounds in first 5 mins. We are simply outworking wf inside.

  7. Lunatic Fringe 01/08/2011 at 4:45 PM #

The vaulted Princeton offense really clicking for WF.

  8. Lunatic Fringe 01/08/2011 at 4:52 PM #

The other CJ ( Williams) is putting on a clinic in the art of backdoor cuts. NC State actually doing better job at attacking weak side than WF who is supposed to be doing that with the Princeton.

  9. coach13 01/08/2011 at 5:09 PM #

    That went as expected.

  10. burnbarn 01/08/2011 at 5:27 PM #

Very nice game…. better than I expected. This is the most aggressive I have seem a pack team on the boards… Howell and Painter are solid subs for Leslie and Tracy.. has to put a lot of pressure on the D..

Nice job at the foul line too.

Well done, a fun game to watch. Most played well against a very weak team. A good win going into a tough stretch of games.

  12. StateFans 01/08/2011 at 5:51 PM #

Had to miss the game. Didn’t even get to DVR it. Saw last 4 minutes. I’ll take anything like that over a Big Four rival no matter how bad they are this year. HUGE opportunity to ‘get back closer to even’ with a road game at BC this week!

Best game i’ve ever seen cj williams have, EVER! great performance and GREAT COACHING!

It’s amazing what this team can do when Gonzalez is not playing.

  16. bradleyb123 01/08/2011 at 6:11 PM #

Tracy Smith 23 points, 11 rebounds in 33 minutes.

That’s maybe the best part about this game. It’s good to see the Macrowave getting back to form. And they said in the last game, he bumped knees with somebody and was going to be seen by a doctor. That had me worried. But it seems it wasn’t much of a problem for him.

  17. packplantpath 01/08/2011 at 6:37 PM #

Just back from the game. It was one I never felt we would lose from about 5 minutes into the game. Wake is awful and we have enough talent to win unless we got too stupid.

But, fun game to watch and fortunately mistakes looked minimal to me.

Some acrobatics the last 10 minutes or so from some of our guys. They actually played like they wanted it most of the game, though there were quite a few noticeable shouts of “move” coming from our area of seating when Javi would stand at the 3 point line for what felt like 30 seconds while the rest of the team held a conference in the paint expecting to magically get open.

Those episodes were rare enough I won’t complain too much ๐Ÿ™‚

Like I said, fun game to watch. I really wanted to put 100 on them, simply because I can’t remember the last time we dropped 100 on a conference team. They passed the first test in the ACC with flying colors. Next.

  18. DC_wolf 01/08/2011 at 6:47 PM #

Didn’t get to see the game but was able to keep GameTracker in the corner on my monitor. It’s obvious this team can score (not always, but often), I think if they could learn to play defense 9 conference wins is possible in a watered-down ACC.

  19. Lunatic Fringe 01/08/2011 at 6:59 PM #

47-22 rebounding. I can’t remember the last time we outrebounded an ACC opponent like that.

  20. mikeD 01/08/2011 at 7:04 PM #

^jamieinkorea, I couldn’t agree more! The team plays pretty terrible when Javi is in!

Take a look at Javi’s line in the box score. 15 minutes, 0-2 FG, 0-1 3PM (the one he took from two feet away from half court), 1 assist, and 1 personal foul. That’s the only numbers he has! As a point guard, I expect more points and especially more assists.

I realize Javi can turn it on and be unstoppable at times, but he rarely does that. I’m surprised he is still in the starting lineup after 3.5 years of mediocre (previously horrific) playing.

  21. mikeD 01/08/2011 at 7:19 PM #

    20:00-14:53 – in – 11-7 – 4 point lead
    14:53-07:56 – out- 28-20 – 8 point lead
    07:56-05:33 – in – 28-26 – 2 point lead
    05:33-00:00 – out- 40-30 – 10 point lead

    2nd Half
    20:00-12:37 – in – 53-42 – 11 point lead
    12:37-00:00 – out- 90-69 – 21 point lead

While this evidence isn’t conclusive for the entire season, it does show that the team struggles when he is on the floor.

I’m really excited for the win, and thankful for the effort Javi has put out for us for 3.5 years now…just looking towards the next game.

  22. JeremyH 01/08/2011 at 7:22 PM #

just finished watching the first half on espn3.com. we played pretty crappy for much of it, there were 5 straight possessions that ended in turnovers. We would have been down by 20 at the half to a tournament team.

  23. Texpack 01/08/2011 at 7:25 PM #

As for Javi, he’s playing back-up minutes that may decline as Harrow continues to develop. Harrow isn’t physically capable of going 40 at this point. The rebounding effort was very good today. We do have a nice 3.5 man rotation down low and if we need to do some hatchet work there’s Vandenberg as well. Need to win a couple of these road games coming up. I’m encouraged by today, but beating a team that’s 271 in the RPI ain’t turning the corner.

This was a great game. We looked a little ragged at first, but never let Wake get any momentum. Sid and Monte were really energetic and in control. Funny of the game was the Scott Wood Intentional. Scott lost his cool, but he did show the ref the welt that he had just gotten on the other end when the Refs were not paying attention. Sid calmed him down, but kept making the case.

The WF coach will win a few this year. He did use the Ref’s ear about 3 second lane violations and within 5 minutes, they called one. We were really pitching our tent int he lane.

Crowd was a little sparce……about 40% of the upper level was empty, but the crowd was energetic and loud.

It was a quality win…..were there rough edges, sure….but the generous dose of CHEMISTRY that the team had before the game lasted ALL game. They played with poise. Had a lapse when we lost the ball on four consecutive possessions….but up to that point, we had no ZERO turnovers. Rebounding was fascinating….it is difficult to get offensive rebound when you were hitting almost 60% in the second half.

Wake, if the perfect the Princeton dance routine and improve on their perimeter shooting will be a formiadable foe….

    SO….take the W….it was a GREAT W…..

Congratulate the team…..they played with poise.

Only downer of the game is that Javi’s days of being on the Jumbotron as a starter are nearing an end. Javi is a competitor, but he does not have the leadership or the shooting.

Big Bad Jordan is STILL in Sid’s doghouse….BIG TIME. Side said on his radio show that it was NOT a skill issue….sounds like the lad has been a bit lax in the academic area…..now THERE is a real change from certain OTHER local institutions where a player is academically elibible to play, but the coach holds him out…..

    LOL
we did NOT lose at home last year in our league opener.
this is Sid’s FIRST ACC opener at home.
