Pack not DOA in revised ACC rankings

Despite struggling through a respectable early season schedule without the help of Tracy Smith, Sidney Lowe’s Wolfpack has not been declared Dead on Arrival before ACC play begins.

Who knows if it is optimism? or realism that the conference is particularly weak? or a lack of exposure of how the Pack has played. Nonetheless, I’ll take it.

5. N.C. State (7-4, 0-0): Fifth may be too charitable for a team so dependent on freshmen C.J. Leslie, Ryan Harrow and Lorenzo Brown. But the Wolfpack did beat George Mason, and like UNC and FSU, its losses are quality: Georgetown, Wisconsin, Syracuse and Arizona. The key is when All-ACC forward Tracy Smith returns from a left knee injury that’s sidelined him for the last nine games.

Not sure I would call them quality losses. Maybe we played some quality teams, but the only silver lining game (if I really had to concede one) was keeping it close at Syracuse. Definetely does not outweigh the losses to Georgetown on a neutral cout and the home loss to Arizona. I’m not even going to go down the road of the Wisconsin game.

its blind optimism, face it. we are DOA

  3. Tampa-Pack 12/30/2010 at 12:25 PM #

I was going to say 5th may be to charitable because we’ve never finished higher than what (tied for 9th) under Lowe’s leadership….

  4. sautz 12/30/2010 at 12:43 PM #

It’s optimism, but this is the worst ACC (save for Duke) I have ever seen. So, we have that going for us… We suck, but so do some other teams. Sidney Lowe Unlimited!

We’ll see how the Wake game goes, that will tell us a lot about what kind of ACC season we can expect. If State cruises to a 15-20 point win, then I think 5th is attainable. A struggle to win at home over a terrible Wake team or a loss…yikes.

Quality losses? By 39 to Wisconsin, 10 at home to Arizona, and a stomping vs Georgetown? I’m missing something here……

Other than Duke (1) and Wake (12), there’s going to be a lot of movement among the other teams this season. Good coaching will keep Maryland, UNC and UVA in the top half of the league, and joining them should be VA Tech and FSU, whose talent may overcome mediocre coaching.

The other 5 teams will struggle due to poor bench leadership, although BC may overachieve and crack the top 6. I look for a long season for those other 4: State, Miami, Clemson and GT. However, I did note that Clemson beat Delaware State by 35.

The only reason State isn’t DOA is because they’re already a corpse.

“The key is when All-ACC forward Tracy Smith returns from a left knee injury that’s sidelined him for the last nine games.”

I say the key is figuring out what the heck is going on between Sidney and Tracy at this point. The comments from Lowe make it seem like there is something other than Tracy’s injury holding him out at this point. Any chance that Tracy is not happy about the incoming freshmen getting all the attention this year? Maybe he’s “holding out” to show Lowe just how much they really need him? I have no idea, but if Lowe doesn’t understand that this is his last chance to keep his job and therefore needs to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to put the best possible team on the floor every single night, this season is certainly “lost”.

My biggest concern at this point is not for this season, but for future seasons. If Lowe gets canned during/at the end of the season, will Leslie, Brown, and Harrow hang around with the new coach? I could see Leslie splitting to the NBA early, along with Brown, and Harrow possibly transferring somewhere else. They all seem to have bought into Lowe as their coach, and I just can’t help but wonder how losing him would affect their love for NC State. I hope I’m wrong on that, as it seems unlikely Lowe will return for another year (I hope I’m wrong on that, too!).

Leslie and Brown are not that good (yet). Also remember there is a lockout looming for the NBA next season.

I don’t want to speculate that Tracy would like to redshirt under a new coach; seems far-fetched yet eerily viable.

Howell is ok and Painter is learning, but we don’t really have another bona fide banger to compliment Tracy down low, which I’m assuming Uchebo (sp?) is. I am also hopeful that Harrow peaks next year.

Then again, what the he** am I am talking about. This was supposed to be the year.

I agree that Leslie and Brown aren’t that good. Up against guys their size, they’rer having a hard time. Leslie would struggle in the NBA developmental league.

Time to cut our losses and start over. No big loss if this new freshman class moves on as far as I’m concerned.

I think that’s a fair slot for us at this stage of the season. It is indeed put up or shut up time. Must perform very well in league play for any shot at a bid and for Sid to stick around another year. A 5th place finish likely wouldn’t cut it in this ACC.

Notre Dame thumped Gtown yesterday. Zona is bubble material. Cuse and Wisconsin are solid NCAA teams. Too bad we lost all four.

This will all sort itself out in due time.

I think the acc as a whole is on par with where they have been for the last few years. Duke has been solid, VT up and coming, UNCheat overated as always and a cluster of teams oudoing each other in finding new ways to lose. So I guess I agree that the acc is weak but thats nothing new. I think SL has to do more better than a 5th place finish and more than just squeak in to the tourney. Deep ncaa run or bust for SL.

Leslie’s a projected mid- to late-first round pick right now. I would not bet $ on him returning.

Brown is not (or should not be) going pro anytime soon.

  13. bradleyb123 12/30/2010 at 4:28 PM #

We’re not DOA until Tracy Smith has returned and we’re still playing badly. That may very well happen, but it hasn’t happened yet. I believe we’ll be a better team with Tracy in the lineup. It’s premature to be chicken little about things just yet.

The Tracy Smith injury may be a bit of a blessing in terms of bubble talk.

They do factor in injuries still, and having him out for those losses will discount those losses, if State handles business in conference. 9 wins should be enough to get on the right side of the bubble.

No team identity in five years. Not defense, not rebounding, not getting to the line, not high shooting percentage…We’ve heard multiple years in a row, “We’re going to run more,” and yet nothing ever changes in our transition game. I don’t think the staff knows how to create a running team, or perhaps any other kind of a team for that matter.

Several years ago I told a friend that JJ Hickson was the biggest waste of a top recruit I could think of (because we couldn’t even muster a winning record with him). Brace yourselves for what may be the biggest waste of a top recruiting CLASS ever. Maybe Tracy makes a difference when/if he comes back, but lack of ID is a glaring deficiency that I have a hard time seeing him or any other combination of players overcoming.

If Sid doesn’t get it done this year, I for one could care less what becomes of Leslie, Brown and Harrow because it’s our new coach that will be leading this gang for the next three years and beyond. Ok, so I’m not totally serious about our freshmen, but I overemphasize to make a point. My biggest concern among the fanbase is the shortsightedness caused by personnel-first thinking rather than coaching-first thinking.

Bad losses or quality losses mean little/nothing. Quality wins are what matters and State has none.

Sorry to change the subject, but I just read that Chris Colmer passed away. Does anyone have any details of what happened.

  18. gtspack 12/30/2010 at 8:37 PM #

Chris Colmer died in a car accident. What a great O-lineman he was. RIP

  19. DC_wolf 12/30/2010 at 11:36 PM #

God rest Chris Colmer. As for this discussion, I agree with Heavy & 61packer: I think the reason we are being given the benefit of the doubt is that Tracy Smith was voted All-ACC at the beginning of the season; therefore a lot of expectation is being placed on his return. I hope cWOhLFrPAiCKs is wrong & there are no games being played between Tracy and Sid – there’s too much on the line for all parties involved. I kind of feel bad for Tracy if the current state of play is dependant on his return for a complete turnaround… No pressure there, Trace!

    Are you kidding me?

  21. 61Packer 12/31/2010 at 12:17 AM #

The biggest problem with the Low teams has been lack of ANY defense. Smith will definitely help us when he returns (IF he’s recovered fully), but what he brings isn’t the thing we need most on the floor.

  22. Rick 12/31/2010 at 10:18 AM #

“I agree that Leslie and Brown aren’t that good. ”

IMO they are great players but are like a ship without a rudder. They need coaching and they are not getting it.

  23. Wufpacker 12/31/2010 at 10:53 AM #

If Leslie is currently projected as a mid first round pick, that doesn’t say much about the expected quality of next year’s draft. If he goes pro after this year and is a first rounder, he better save and invest the money from that contract wisely. He may have to live off of it for a while.

Very sad about Colmer, heck of a player.

Quick tangent – Saw ‘Jeopardy’ a couple of weeks ago. One of the categories was Mike & Mike, the ESPN2 & ESPN radio sports guys. Their clues were something like, “I think the best XYZ ever was this” and the other Mike disagreeing with “You’re wrong, I think the best ZYX was (you guess the answer). The $1000 clue was “The greatest ending ever in college sports was Doug Flutie leading BC…blah, blah” and the other Mike countered with, “Nope it was this team winning the 1983 NCAA championship over Houston.” Obviously very cool that we were the winning question – sadly, no one got it.

Sid’s not the guy to get us back on ‘Jeopardy’ again, but I think he’s brought in some talented players that a better coach can be successful with.
