Quinn thought jeweler was being friendly; UNC recruiting class continues to unravel

The Sporting News has posted this article about the case of former UNC-CH player Robert Quinn.  There is lots of amusing stuff in the piece, but the following passage regarding the thousands of dollars in free jewelry is laugh-out-loud funny

Quinn said he did would not have accepted the jewelry if he knew it was a violation.

“All they talk about is, don’t take nothing from agents, don’t take nothing from agents. They beat that into my head. OK — this dude’s not an agent,” he said. “I wouldn’t purposely do something wrong knowing it could jeopardize myself.”

Asked whether he thinks the jeweler gave him the items with the hope Quinn would buy more items in the future, Quinn said he believes the jeweler was simply being friendly.

“To make a new friend you’ve got to meet a stranger,” Quinn said. “That’s the kind of person I am.”

He didn’t think accepting free jewelry was a violation?

He thought the jeweler was just being friendly?

How many of you have been given thousands of dollars in free jewelry by strangers?

Also, how dumb do you have to be to not delete texts about free jewelry before an NCAA interview about possible violations? And then to have the phone with the texts sitting in plain sight during the interview?

Wow! That is some Jedi-level stupid right there.  In other news…..

Butch’s recruiting class is unraveling.

WPDE Sports has learned that Myrtle Beach quarterback Everett Golson has de-committed from the University of North Carolina and will play college football at Notre Dame. Notre Dame had a home visit with Golson on Wednesday and that was when the decision was made.

Golson was an early commitment to North Carolina during his junior year, but with NCAA sanctions looming, the Seahawks quarterback reopened his recruiting. He made an official visit to Notre Dame when the Fighting Irish upset Utah in November

Golson was rated 4-stars by Scout.com. UNC had 2 top rated quarterbacks committed, so losing only Golson may not have been a huge blow. However, there are rumors that UNC’s other 4-star quarterback commitment will end up being a Hokie:

I have it on good authority that quarterback rom Mallard Creek High School in Marquise Williams fCharlotte, N.C., has told Virginia Tech’s football staff that he will sign with the Hokies.

At this point, however, Tech is waiting to see if Williams goes public. He earlier had made an oral commitment to North Carolina but since then has taken official visits to Tech, N.C. State and Michigan.

Williams (6-3, 218) received four stars out of five from the rivals.com ratings service.

Other players that have rescinded their commitments to UNC:

**** OL Jamar Lewter: Link to his profile on Scout.com.

If this was just one player, just maybe you could believe what he was saying…but it was the culture that UNC-CHeat allowed that is the real problem.

Perhaps Quinn was just waiting on the jeweler to ask for the customary handjob? You know, like when most folks make “new friends” that give them jewelry??

The NFL Combine should submit that interview instead of requiring Quinn to take the Wonderlic test…holy smoke !

Marquis Williams committed to VT on Monday.

    http://twitter.com/rivalsmike (Mike Farrel at Rivals):
Looks like 4 star QB Marquise Williams has de-committed from UNC and committed to VTech according to sources, should be public soon.

    A looming post-season ban will do that…

And if TOB had gone for it on 4th and 1 at Clemson, or taken care of business at Maryland, not to mention ECU and VT, good chance we have a better shot at some of these guys.

Re LOIC: can ya lose what ya never had? The NCAA is interviewing this clown on July 12-13 and unx is unaware of his prior transgressions so Quinn reps them at Media Day two weeks later? No internal conversations in between? Did they even try to control anything?

Lewter is potentially very interesting from many angles.

According to IC there is a rumor that he had falsified transcripts so he HAD to backdown/UNC rescind the scholarship. I think he’s supposedly going to Marshall.

He went to the same high school as Marvin Austin (Ballou) whose assistant coach was also named as a violator in the first yahoo stories about giving/loaning money to MA.

Lewter was also very close with Blake.

Just can’t make this stuff up any better.

Speaking of Marvin Austin, I was kinda hoping he would win ACC POY. I guess Tyrod deserves it, though. 😉

Some of these guys are so dumb that it’s no wonder that Butch had to get them as special academic qualifiers. I’ll be the entire IQ of the UNC defense doesn’t get to 1000 in total…

Forrest Gump would have been an academic All American at Tarholina!

I feel for the guy. I really do. I know whenever I walk into jewelry stores I am always bombarded with all sorts of free swag, especially Black Diamond stuff. Really annoying sometimes. I’m just constantly begged to wear $5K worth of stuff for nothing. That’s why I’ve stopped going in…

Quinn’s problem is that he doesn’t have Cam Newton’s dad.
