Shep Smith smacks down smarmy Edwards aid – Wolfpack Nation!

Fun video seems to be en vogue right now.  This video from Friday related to the UNC scandal remains a MUST SEE for anyone who hasn’t.  That thing was pure gold and I was surprised to speak to some friends at the game this weekend who had not seen it yet.

Then, later on Friday, this thread was opened on our Message Forums and has gotten a lot of attention in the interim, so we decided to bring it to the front of the blog.

While introducing Andrew Young, John Edward’s former assistant, Shep said:

… Andrew Young, joining us from Raleigh, in the heart of Wolfpack Nation.

Mr. Young retorted:

Thank you Shep, it’s, it’s Tarheel Country, by the way

To which Shep quickly responded:

Uhh… actually, actually, to be quite frank, Raleigh is Wolfpack Nation, Go Wolfpack. Uh, No, No love here for the light blue

As tjfoose shared:

For those may not know who Shepard Smith is, he’s one of Fox News’ straight news anchors.

He leans left, is a proud alum of Ole Miss (to which he regular refers). He was a supporter of Admiral Ackbar becoming the new Ole Miss mascot, and on his show, expressed his disappointment when Ackbar did not make the finalist cut. As you can probably infer, he’s a big college sports fan.

Nice to know some out there in the national non-sports media understand the difference between the Wolfpack and the Smurfs.

I always thought of Shep Smith as being one of the few Fox anchors who plays it straight down the middle moreso than someone who “leans to the left.” He never takes what any political hack says at face value, be they a Republican or a Democrat, and always asks the right question or makes a piercingly accurate comment. Perhaps his being on a network that is proud to lean right makes it appear that he has a different slant than he does, but if you put him on MSNBC he would appear as conservative as Joe Scarbrough.

In this case, Smith called it exactly like it is. While Andrew Young, the guy who was Johnny Jump-Up’s bag man for years might see Raleigh as “Tar Heel Country,” Shep saw right through it and pointed out that this is indeed a Wolfpack area, red and proud. Damned right we are. I see Wolfpack tags, flags, stickers and plates everyhere.

I would be ashamed to display tarhole tags, flags, etc. WalMart will probably have a clearance sale on unc merchandize.

Someone want to inform the N and O Raleigh is Wolfpack Nation?

    I think we’ve got next year’s NC State commercial…

“always thought of Shep Smith as being one of the few Fox anchors who plays it straight down the middle moreso than someone who “leans to the left.”

Shep definitely has a mild left lean, and it’s not just b/c he is juxtaposed against opinion programs like O’Reilly and Hannity.

But who really cares about that – his squashing Andrew Young’s (who seems sleazy in his own right) presumptuous hole remark was great stuff. Shep is a pretty bright guy and I’m not surprised he knows something about the lay of the land here in the Triangle.

I hate to say it, but without knowing who Shep was, if I’d had to guess I would have thought he was the Tarheel guys and the guy on the right was the Wolfpack guy. Shame on me for stereotyping by appearances.

    And yes, that was awesome.

if one talks about Shep, one has to mention his favorite video which is the one were the bear falls out of the tree and bounces on a trampoline. a classic.

We have to have a non-local to correct the local. A lot of that going on recently. 🙂

A bit disturbing that a Wake Forest graduate, Young, is carrying the party-line for UNC. *sigh*

    I agree with you Alpha.

My ‘leans to the left’ comment was about Shep, not his on air reporting. I only included it for background context, due to the stereotyping, fair or not, of FoxNews.

His reporting is straight down the middle, and as such, yes, if he were on MSNBC, he would appear conservative.

Shep’s personal politics are not a secret, but they are not put on display during his news broadcasts. On a rare occasion, a hint or two can be gleamed during an interview, but that’s about it. And just as common, Shep can appear as more of a conservative.

I consider that fine praise for a news journalist.

^ Exactly how I feel. Shep is perhaps the best anchor on air today, broadcast or cable.
