Hawkins uncooperative with NCAA investigation

Last Friday Chris Hawkins, who purchased A.J. Green’s jersey, leading to the receiver’s four-game suspension, said he never spoke to the NCAA about the case. Hawkins, who paid $1,000 for the jersey, said the NCAA “never really came to me.”

Stacey Osburn, the NCAA’s associate director for public and media relations, responded Monday.

“Actually, the NCAA contacted Chris Hawkins on several occasions to discuss the matter; however, he was not responsive or cooperative,” Osburn said in an e-mail. “He did not return the four different phone calls attempting to gather information. He also canceled a conference call with the NCAA and a member institution, and failed to join the conference call when it was rescheduled.“

Archived records of senior cornerback Kendric Burney’s Twitter account show that Draughn met Burney, cornerback Charles Brown(OpBoyGuapBoy12) and former UNC player Chris Hawkins in Atlanta in May.

The NCAA defined Hawkins as an agent in its four-game suspension of Georgia receiver A.J. Green. Hawkins said he talked to the NCAA about his involvement with current UNC players but denied any wrongdoing. Brown and Burney were among the six players UNC declared ineligible for the LSU game.

It is important to note that traveling or even having contact with a person deemed to be an agent by the NCAA isn’t necessarily a violation of NCAA rules assuming no benefits were received including travel, lodging, meals, drinks or other entertainment.

    So Draughn (and others) were in Atlanta doing whatever….
    With Hawkins who hands out $1000 checks like water….
    and is now cleared to play against GT.

    Which should mean that Draughn (or his parents) paid for everything (hotels, travel, meals, drinks, etc) that he did.

    Things that make you go hmmmmmm.

    If Draughn just went to Atlanta – he’s probably OK…it sounds like they were driving anyway.

    The Vegas trip – that sounds like an entirely different story. I’m not sure who was on that trip – it’s kind of hard to follow the tweets.

    Yes, the Atlanta trip may not be a big deal(or Vegas for that matter). However, with the quote from the NCAA on Hawkins and Giglio pointing out the tweets referencing the Atlanta trip, then I thought it made sense to at least put this all on one place. There was no intent to draw any conclusions.

    Also, Da’Norris Searcy is from Decatur, Ga which is about 10 minutes from downtown ATL. So a lot of this can be explained away…maybe they stayed with friends or family in Atlanta(though Draughn, Brown, and Burney aren’t from the area). Also, hotels in Atlanta on Priceline can be had for $30 per night. Certainly doable for college kids even on a tight budget.

    What job does Hawkins have that he can afford all this? Who does he work for? Obviously it ain’t a 9 to 5 deal. We should pool our money and hire a private investigator.

    You see this would be a good avenue for the N and O to go down. “We contacted Willie Parker to find out about his relationship with Hawkins but he would not speak with reporters etc etc etc”

    I have heard “financial advisor.” exactly what does that mean? Did he pass the series 7? Licensed insurance agent? Licensed broker in the state of NC? Anywhere?

    Pick up this one interesting path and get all the information you can and describe how/why you were unsuccessful in some instances. Then leave wit a listing of unanswered questions. The NCAA comments are a gold mine. Hell ESPN should do a 30 30 on this guy.

    ^statered, we don’t have to pay for a private investigator. Our taxes fund a small agency known as the IRS. The IRS asks the very questions you pose EVERY day. Anyone who has been audited by them can attest to that!

    As a matter of fact, since most of his WORK seems to involve travel and entertainment I would think they would just LOVE to see the business expenses of Mr. Hawkins. I don’t know why but the company I work for has become serious as death on justifcation of T & E over the last couple of years.

    travel & expenses / living is one of the most abused parts of companies budgets, during down times, its always the first to be scrutinized, at least at my business.

    If I’m investigator – I’ll ask about the Atlanta trip, but the trip that likely was more expensive was Vegas.

    I’d also want to know – what do you mean by “NC SWAG is unreal”?

    I wonder what kind of books the representatives have to maintain to be in compliance w/ NFL and NCAA.

    you know, i worked all thru college at least 20hrs per week (the max allowed) and i maybe went on one trip a semester.

    Many of these guys supposedly come from humble means, like the rest of us, and the way they tweet, they do this stuff regularly. I don’t know if thats bravado or what, but it doesn’t sound like it. And to organize and arrange alot of this stuff, it sure sounds like someone is doing it for them.

    Ed Shields is a HS football coach in Prince George County. I think he also is head of a Prince George County Football Association(or something like that). I think he is at Suitland HS.

    wolf pack, do you think the guy just isn’t smart enough or his character standards would forbid it? He’s obviously hanging around with some pretty shady characters. I agree with ismael – someone is setting this stuff up and I would sure think it is someone familiar enough with the process to know how to cover tracks – Gary Wichard, John Blake that level of experience. I’m not convinced MA is smart enough to get in out of the rain.
