2010 Football and Opportunity Cost

I’m not even going to bother with any hyperlinks – all over the front page of our humble blog, or pretty much any sports site in the state – you will find copious amounts of material regarding UNC’s highly embarrassing football scandals. Where it ends, nobody knows for sure – but every sane person agrees that Tarheel football has taken a huge hit.

But rather than taking pressure off the program 25 miles east of Chapel Hill, I would argue that the stakes just got even higher for Tom O’Brien. In his 4th year at the helm, the Wolfpack has yet to find its footing. And all the momentum going into 2010 was clearly on UNC’s side (despite TOB’s perfect 3-0 record against Butch Davis). Better recruiting, ESPN televising their spring game, pre-season hype and expectations. State fans were left to seethe in their broth of mediocrity.

Then the bomb dropped. Then another. Then a whole cluster of them. UNC football is making headlines for all the wrong reasons, and on the precipice of a likely beatdown at the hands of SEC also-ran LSU. Suddenly, NC State has a window of opportunity to seize the initiative and become the “program on the rise” again. But it’s only an opportunity. As much as we like our schadenfreude in Wolfpack blogistan – it doesn’t make NC State’s own futility any less maddening.

Historically, these windows of opportunity haven’t stayed open long. And you don’t vault to the forefront just by showing up. NC State had a great chance to put its basketball program back in the national consciousness, as Matt Doherty systematically imploded. But despite a good stretch of head-to-head wins against said hapless Vanilla Ice look-alike, NC State basketball stayed in B-minus limbo. Soon enough, Roy Williams was in Chapel Hill – and soon after that, he was cutting down the nets. Herb Sendek headed off for Tempe, and the Wolfpack continued its two decade long (and counting!) sojourn through the basketball desert. Having a real opportunity and missing it only compounded the agony.

Wolfpack fans will feel that pain and regret again, unless Tom O’Brien has a breakthrough 2010 season. UNC football is a punchline. Wake Forest is preparing for a down year (or years). Duke is…well, DUKE. Meanwhile, Tom O’Brien goes into battle with the one thing you need most – a superstar QB. While more would be better, 7-5 is the absolute minimum record needed to put NC State football on the map. That level of success gets you a decent bowl bid. It gets you good press. It gives you something to sell recruits (including those who had pledged to the Tarheels but now have to be weighing their options) other than the empty promises that every coach in America can make (which aren’t very credible after four subpar seasons in a row). It also makes the UNC job much less attractive for hypothetical candidates to clean up Butch Davis’ mess.

Don’t wring your hands about the schedule. It’s still the f-ing ACC, folks. And none of the Wolfpack’s OOC opponents are ranked. If you can’t manage a 7-win season under those circumstances by your 4th year on the job, it’s on YOU. And while I respect Tom O’Brien’s career and still think his resume displayed exactly the type of coach NC State needed after Chuck Amato – it’s time for results. Remember my favorite mantra – it’s about responsibility, not fault. No ifs, ands, or buts. 7-5 or better, or it’s time to retire. Your move, Coach.

* NOTE – You probably noticed that I didn’t reference winning the bowl, or stipulate a “winning season” which could be achieved by going 6-6 and winning a bowl. Well, that’s because the post-season is so screwy. At 7-5, State would go to a decent bowl, and probably face off against a pretty good opponent. At 6-6, bowl selection rules dictate that you’re probably looking at a directional Michigan school (or someone of that ilk). And there’s your perverse incentive right there, if bowl records are scrutinized. Because the more you win in the regular season and the better your fans travel (ironically, this explains why TOB had such a great bowl record at Boston College – his teams were always “underseeded” because they only have about 15-20 fans), the more likely it is that you will lose the bowl game. And unless you’re in the BCS title game, the bowl is really just a glorified exhibition. But the bids themselves do bring prestige, and earning good ones does matter to your players and prospective recruits.

Glad to see you write what most rational Wolfpack fans are thinking but perhaps won’t verbalize out of respect to TOB. UNC having all these problems does present an opportunity – and one extra W. To me, just going 7-5 isn’t enough – we also need to capitalize on the recruiting trail in the subsequent years. UNC could turn this whole thing around by not shooting themselves in the foot like we did when we got rid of V. Instead, they could accept a slap or two from the NCAA, recruit a great replacement for Butch, and out-recruit TOB based on future (unknown) performance instead of past (known) performance.

Phrases you never thought you’d read for 300 please, Alex.

“Instead, they could accept a slap or two from the NCAA…”

Would that we could have chosen to accept a slap or two from the NCAA, but we weren’t exactly given that choice. Unfortunately it was more like the scene in ‘Airplane’ when everyone was lining up to get their licks in, each with a bigger weapon than the last.

By the time Peter Golenbock and his minions, the media, the UNC system BOGs, our own (allegedly) administrators*, and then the general population, were done with us, what the NCAA had in store was like a gentle and soothing massage.

*(I still strongly regret that one of my degrees has Larry Monteith’s signature on it)

The only way NC State can capitalize on UNC’s recruits possibly bolting is if they don’t go looking for some of the sweet stuff that they were getting/going to get at UNC from another school.

  7. Bowlpack 09/04/2010 at 6:35 AM #

7-5 is a realistic record at the high end of what our season might become, but doesn’t necessarily translate into NC State being considered a program on the rise. In order to garner the attention of the media, we really need to get to 8-4 this season and make a run at winning our division. I think that would contrast much more nicely with the poor results of the recent past.

  8. Greywolf 09/04/2010 at 7:30 AM #

A Wolfpacker friend passed away yesterday. It took 2 undertakers 5 hours to get the grin off his face. And that’s all I have to say about the UNX fiasco.

7-5 may be a realistic record but what we need IMNSHO is a breakthrough record. Something on the order of 8-4 or even 9-3. I’m not expecting it, just defining it. Creeping up on UNX will not get us past UNX. What will be tough to take is for them to have a better record than we do. How will that affect recruiting?

    NEWSFLASH
Russell Wilson has been implicated in the Tarheel debacle. The NCAA is hauling him in for questioning because “Russell has been schooling and tutoring the UNC defense for the last 2 years”

If I had a diploma with Larry Monteith’s signature on it, I would find a good forger and have Bruce Poulton’s signature put there. Mine has John Caldwell’s and I am proud of it.

The N&O looks like it has finally smelled the Coffee, but they still pull articles that the late night staff put on….only to have to put a MORE damning article BACK up when WRAL posts the news….

The Inside Carolina “Tar Pit” Football Blog should be required reading for everyone….BOTH sides. Their “HOT NEWS” on the freebie link is very telling of the attitude. I have read about 50 pages of this in the past two weeks. For example, last night there were 7 pages of “new” entries….many just reposts with a comment. However, the prevailing excuses are:

    1. ALL Schools with GOOD programs cheat.

    2. Why is the NCAA picking on UNC? We haven’t even won a championship yet.

    3. Butch can NOT be expected to supervise 85 wild and crazy and talented football players.

    4. We did not recruit these guys for their classroom abilities….give us a BREAK!

    5. It is Thorp’s FAULT. He should be held accountable.

    6. The Administration is using this as a desperate attempt to gain control. They have always been jealous of the BB program and don’t want FB to succeed.

    7. The tutor is the REAL problem and the Professors who supervised her or the Professors who should have known that the players could not write such great term papers.

The above represents 80 – 90% of the posts or conclusions. Anyone who does NOT post comments in agreement with the above or who even HINT at Butch being the problem or being held accountable is called a Traitor, a Lobo Luniac and a Troll.

SO much for the UNC Fan Base “getting it”.

  11. McCallum 09/04/2010 at 7:46 AM #

Excellent general point with the piece.

North Carolina is difficult ground to gain a long term strong footing within concerning football. You have a generally strong university system (especially when weighed against the rest of the South) you have 9.5 million people with five major division one programs within the state, you have a very slanted media which concerns itself primarily with one program while paying lip service to the four others, and you have strong major programs on your borders with large fan bases.

The difficulty always concerns continuity. State has seen opportunities like these before with none being strong than the 88-91 time line. Tennessee was down, Clemson was in trouble with Danny Ford, unc was awful, Duke had Spurrier, wake forest (hence forth known on this site as the lucky sperm club) was bad, and East Carolina was decent. That time frame was a chance to lock down the borders of the state with major programs to the west and south in trouble and unc not doing well. State continued to lose recruits such as Carl Pickens (I played against him), Chester McGlockton, Ashley Sheppard, Heath Shuler etc. State missed the opportunity and Mack Brown soon took hold of the state. Another chance came along under Amato coupled with Sam the Eagle at unc but once again, a long term vision for the university concerning sports was not in place and thus did not take root.

unc may well take a hit and that SHOULD benefit State but Clemson is picking up recruits in North Carolina AGAIN at nearly the same pace they had in the early 90s. South Carolina continues to come across the border, Georgia still runs the Hwy 74 belt (Shelby to Wilmington) for talent (the richest belt of talent in NC and State has little impact there), Flordia will roll in and pick off the best talent individually from time to time so the trend does not look good UNLESS there is a vision.

What are the nuts and bolts of that “vision”? Exposure and winning, giving out free radio programing (Ga Tech is doing that down here to gain inroads), a decent sport information department, a group of individuals not solely based in specialization but rather an organization with a fully integrated grasp of what the proper template for success should be in the matter. A grasp of theater, drama, and tone all of which, in combination with the above items, all go together to produce a memorable game day experience and a desire to return week in and week out. This means no stupid commercials during the game, no parking drama, a bigger band which plays traditional NC STATE MUSIC (the continuation of fight songs, tradition, etc), LONGER tailgating, and a reduction in the overall tone of the NC STATE screw the fans mentality.

In sum, have a grasp for the details. Know them inside and out, be able to talk at length about all areas of the state, why those people should be following the train in Raleigh, why State is very important, and why they should support State in all things.

Or as the folks at LSU always told me, don’t screw the fans.

    McCallum

  12. BJD95 09/04/2010 at 8:10 AM #

McCallum – good points all around. I also think that losing the home and home series with Tennessee was a pretty big blow. That would have given us so much exposure in the western half of the state. And a good showing may very well have mad some kids (and high school coaches) give the Pack a second look.

The neutral site game next season is better than nothing – but far less of an opportunity than what we originally signed up for.

  13. Greywolf 09/04/2010 at 8:16 AM #

Do you think Annabelle is the next to go?

  14. BJD95 09/04/2010 at 8:27 AM #

I would be shocked if either AVM or George Tarantini are still around next year. I find it hard to believe their level of “performance” will stand up to Yow’s promised scrutiny.

    ADVENTUROO:

Interesting idea re: Monteith’s signature. The day I walked across the stage to receive that degree, I wanted to ask Mr. Monteith how much his 30 pieces of silver had bought him and was his life better or worse. I didn’t have time for that, of course, but I did mumble “you should be ashamed” as I shook his hand and walked away. Whether he heard me or not is another matter. He was mic’ed so I didn’t say it very loudly.

I’m sure I wasn’t the only one that day that “spoke” to Mr. Monteith. Just in my small class receiving doctorates that day, 3 others were very good friends of mine who had been at State since the early/mid ’80’s (this was ’92 graduation, btw) and we were all big fans of NCSU athletics. At least one of those 3 hated Monteith more than I did, which is saying something.

The fact that the man made it off the stage that day without getting bitch-slapped is nothing short of miraculous.

And my other degree DOES have Poulton’s signature, incidentally.

  16. 87stategrad 09/04/2010 at 9:22 AM #

Everybody loved Bruce Poulton. Whenever he would enter Reynolds Coliseum and sit in his mid-court front row seat, the crowd would chant “Bruce-Bruce”. And he would always stand up, smile, and wave.

  17. Phang 09/04/2010 at 9:31 AM #

I don’t remember who’s signature is on mine (’84). I was out of the country and didn’t attend graduation. I’m new on the board, so let me tell everyone where I stand.

I love Wolfpack athletics (including the 1999 NCSU National Championship in Ultimate Frisbee). I saw my first football game in Riddick Stadium. But there are much more important things in life than sports. I don’t want to win by cheating. I’d rather have a good reputation. But I believe you can have both winning programs and good reputations.

“If I’m lying I’m dying” – LOL at the Jerry Clower reference.

I’m optimistic that TOB will make a big step forward this year. He proved at BC that he can turn in good seasons, but what many fans don’t realize is that it really does take four-five years to turn a program around.

The Roy reference to quick titles ignores the fact that Roy didn’t have to change the unc bb program, just get it back on the tracks.

Let’s look at what TOB has going for him. He has done a decent (not great, admittedly) job of recruiting, especially since he’s been recruiting against a unc program that may have not been following the rules. I expect that we’ll reap the benefits of the unc fiasco in recruiting in the very near future.

He appears to be running a clean program. See my statement above. I like clean programs.

Injuries have hurt us in the past. Dunno what to say about that. I hope Nate is healty all year.

I feel that TOB finally has everyone on the same page this year. I predict an 8-5 season.

Similarly for Wolfpack BB. Sid has them playing together, as demonstrated by the end of season run last year. I predict 4th in the ACC for Wolfpack BB. You read it here first.

    Go Wolfpack!

  18. LifeLongWolf 09/04/2010 at 9:50 AM #

I have 2 degrees with Larry’s name on them. I didn’t say anything to him, but I count myself as blessed to have been a student during both Sheridan’s and Valvano’s tenures.

  19. leewolf 09/04/2010 at 11:01 AM #

Excellent post and mirrors my feelings exactly about this season. 7-5 or bust. It is time to take a step forward.

  20. BJD95 09/04/2010 at 11:22 AM #

The Roy Williams reference was meant to reinforce how quickly the window(s) of opportunity can slam shut. Not to say “Roy did it fast with UNC football, TOB should do the same with NC State football.” That’s not my point in the least.

I am convinced that TOB can coach. He has a track record after all. But that doesn’t mean he’s a lead pipe cinch to succeed here. He needs a 7-5 or better season so he can salvage a decent recruiting class this year and be well positioned for the next one. And with nobody else in the area having a banner year (and the Atlantic Division being quite weak for the near future), the payoff could be very significant.

But fall short of that, and the stench of “losing program” starts to get overpowering.

  21. Phang 09/04/2010 at 11:42 AM #

Gotcha BJD. I agree if it’s not 7-5 or better things get dicey for TOB.

  22. tvp1 09/04/2010 at 12:54 PM #

The Atlantic Division being weak for the near future? I wish that was the case. I expect FSU to return to their traditional dominant status quickly now that they have a competent coaching staff in place. In that sense, we had a great window of opportunity for several years – Wake, BC, and Clemson were all able to take advantage and win the division; we did not get close.

But otherwise, I think this is on point.

  23. cWOhLFrPAiCKs 09/04/2010 at 10:46 PM #

Not sure if you’ve seen this link yet, but Heather Dinich just posted an update to her blog talking about the UNC players that were suspended being seen in the stands at the game. Show of support for teammates or slap in the face of the NCAA?

    http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/14315/unc-players-in-stands-bad-idea

I can’t imagine someone at UNC thought this was a good idea? I mean, I could see one or two of these guys making it down there on their own, but all of them? And better yet, Who Gave These Guys Tickets?

  24. wolfman1959 09/05/2010 at 3:00 PM #

If Debbie Yow is as on her game as I think she is…..there is NO WAY
Annabelle Vaughn Myers is on the staff next year……..horrible representative of the university….

All you need to know about the state of our in-state recruiting this year: California has as many top 30 NC players signed as we do…
