The Pigskin Preview is just starting. ABC had their cameras on Butch Davis prior to the event started with live microphones. Butch spoke for several moments about the current controversy going on at UNC.

    Yeah, they’re auctioning helmets now. I hope NC State gets some good money. The Duke helmet just sold for 3 grand! (Proceeds go towards scholarships).

    The UNC buyer went from $1000, to $1100, to $1500 all by himself with no other bidders, probably because he didn’t want the UNC helmet to sell for the lowest so he bumped it up himself to tie with State’s.

    TOB got in a quick dig at Butch it sounds like. Shea asked the coaches to give a quick opening comment, and TOB said “About what?” in a sort of sarcastic manner.

    ^ O’Brien’s wit is sharp and very dry…but when he wants to get a dig in, it’s a laser-guided missile.

    He reminds me a lot of my father-in-law, a guy who’s very quiet, extremely intelligent and with a straight-razor for a wit. He may not say five words, but they’ll make you bleed if that is what he wants to do.

    Davis just spoke. All he said about the scandal was that UNC is doing everything they can to cooperate with the NCAA investigation and he said the NCAA is doing everything they can to finish as quickly as possible.

    Don Shea just asked him if he thought their defense would be better this year. Based on the situation they are probably facing, Shea is an idiot for asking that question.
    Davis also said to start with that the NCAA asked him not to comment on the investigation. Statements from the NCAA don’t concur.

    Ruffin McNeill, ECU coach just said,

    “If it’s free, ask for three.”

    and

    “If you win you write a book. If you lose you gotta read one.”

    (or something like that).

    O’Brien just said his best free thing was his education at the Naval Academy.

    Butch just had an interview with the media and despite stating that he wasn’t going to answer questions related to the NCAA investigation, he did answer some general questions about teaching and coaching kids, even touching on agents.

    Notably he did say that it used to be that agents weren’t allowed to even talk with student athletes until they were done with athletics before the NCAA changed the rule on that, all but saying that was a mistake.

    This kind of back and forth would be good to put into a highlight package prior to the NCSU vs UNC game. Or even preseason.

    Putting aside the lines of rivalry, I was very impressed with all of the coaches and the more serious comments/responses that they made. I would think that Butch’s gag order came from UNC more than the NCAA.

    That’s too funny! But hey, it’s for charity so no need to complain. 🙂

    On a humorous note, Butch got in a good one-liner. Ruffin had just finished his opening statement, and he had said something about being in a whirlwind. When it was Butch’s turn to speak, one of the first sentences out of his mouth was, “Care to trade whirlwinds?” or something like that.

    Funny about the UNC helmet buyer. What I wanna know is who the F&$@ bought a Duke Helmet for $3K? Is Barney Fife doing the bidding or what?
