The administration, with $100 million or more recently invested in facilities and a $50 million annual budget, cannot afford to keep a coach who is not producing a return on that investment. If donors and season-ticket purchasers vote with their wallet, so what if the buyout is 10 percent or more of the annual budget? Even at $10 million, borrow it and pay it off over 10 years and you are still better off than risking a possible 5 percent reduction in revenue by keeping an unpopular coach.
