Non-Revenue Sports Update; Kerrigan steps down(updated)

Here is an update on how State’s non-revenue sports are doing so far this school year plus a few other tidbits at the bottom.

Men’s Cross Country
• Finished 2nd in the ACC Championships
• State has finished at least 3rd in the ACC for the past 20 years, including finishing 1st or 2nd in the ACC in 18 of those 20 years
• Virginia won their 2nd consecutive ACC title and has won 3 of the past 4

Women’s Cross Country
• Finished 10th in the ACC Championships
• Worst finish in school history, State had previously never finished below 3rd
• After winning 20 of the first 25 ACC titles, State has only won 1 of the past 6
• Florida St won their 2nd consecutive ACC title

Volleyball (as of 11-3-08)
• Overall record of 9-19
• ACC record of 3-10
• Currently 10th in the ACC out of 12 teams
• 3 ACC wins matches the conference win total of the past 8 seasons combined
• Most wins overall since 2004

Men’s Soccer (as of 11-3-08)
• Overall record of 7-8-1
• ACC record of 2-5-0
• Currently 8th in the ACC out of 9 teams
• Win over Boston College was forfeited due to an ineligible player
• Record of 6-4-1 in new NC State Soccer Stadium
• Has a record of 6-2-0 since BC forfeit including 4 shutout wins (2 of those in ACC play)

Women’s Soccer
• Overall record of 8-12-0
• ACC record of 0-10-0
• Finished 11th in the ACC out of 11 teams
• 2nd consecutive season with no ACC wins
• 2nd consecutive season finishing last in the ACC
• Record of 7-5-0 in new NC State Soccer Stadium
• Scored a total of 4 goals in ACC play and was shutout in 7 of 10 ACC games
• Did not qualify for ACC tournament

Men’s Swimming (as of 11-4-08)
• Overall record of 2-1
• ACC record of 0-1
• Currently 9th in the ACC out of 10 teams

Women’s Swimming (as of 11-4-08)
• Overall record of 3-1
• ACC record of 1-1
• Currently 5th in the ACC out of 11 teams

Rifle (as of 11-3-08)
• Overall record of 8-1
• SEARC record of 8-0 (Southeastern Air Rifle Conference)
• GARC record of 0-1 (Great American Rifle Conference)
• Only loss of the season was to the United States Military Academy (Army)

Note on the Rifle team’s overall record, gopack.com has their record as 9-1 while I calculate it at 8-1. In their first match State finished 2nd out of 3 teams, giving them a record of 1-1. In their next match State finished 1st out of 6 teams, a record of 5-0 and overall 6-1. This is the record published in the N&O story from an NCSU news release no less, yet gopack.com’s story has their record as 7-1. In their 3rd match State finished 1st out of 3 teams, a record of 2-0 and overall 8-1, but gopack.com added those 2 wins to their total of 7-1 for 9-1. I’m sure you’re shocked that gopack.com might have gotten something wrong.

State’s cumulative ACC record for the 2008-2009 school year so far (Football, M Soccer, W Soccer, Volleyball, M Swimming, W Swimming) is 6-31 (.162). Just to compare with the other members of the Big Four in the same sports, Duke is 18-12-5, Carolina is 23-10-1 and Wake is 21-13-1.

Rumors on the Pack Pride message boards are that W Soccer coach Laura Kerrigan has been fired. Kerrigan began coaching the Pack in 1998 and has an overall record in 11 years of 87-107-16 and 13-69-8 in the ACC with no NCAA Tournament appearances. If this turns out to be true, I’m sure there will be more commentary to come.

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State Director of Athletics Lee Fowler announced Monday that head women’s soccer coach Laura Kerrigan is stepping down after 11 seasons.

Kerrigan’s 2008 team was 8-12 and finished 11th in the Atlantic Coast Conference. She compiled an overall record of 87-107-16.

“I appreciate the opportunity I was given to work with such tremendous student-athletes, coaches, administrators and staff here at NC State,” said Kerrigan. “This university and the people here hold many special memories for me, and it has been a pleasure to serve the NC State athletics community. It has been amazing what our Athletic Director, Lee Fowler, and Senior Associate Athletic Director, David Horning, have been able to accomplish in terms of facilities improvements for all of the teams here at NC State over the past few years. I am confident that the next women’s soccer coach will enjoy coaching the talented young players currently here and will be able to fully utilize the new soccer stadium in recruiting new players to the program. As an alumnus of this university, I will always have strong ties to NC State and I will always be rooting for the Wolfpack.”

    Cross Country’s record clearly shows that they have the best facilities at the school, otherwise they wouldn’t have been so successful.

    How’s the Bass Fishing Team doing? I hear that “Coach Jed” cut their budget for Fu-sil-a-tees upgrades.

    Well, if the Rifle team is going to lose to anyone, I don’t mind them losing to Army. That makes me feel good.

    The Bass Fishing team is a club team and is not a varsity sport.

    Thanks for the info. As Archer said, we are the laughing stock of the ACC. He was just talking about football. Unfortunately, we are overall.

    I used to say we are a Women’s Cross Country school. I can’t even say that anymore.

    Swimming started, Men won an opening meet topping Duke and UMBC. The women finished ahead of UMBC but behind Duke. Not sure if Diving was also going.

    After coaching Cullen Jones and years ago David Fox, Brooks Teal wasn’t able to keep the sprinters in the system. This year they will have a very inexperienced group sprinting which sucks because the rest of the distances and relays will probably compete favorably this season.

    X-C is impressive if you realize that they essentially had a completely new team from last year, women were in same boat but really all Fr.

    Women’s Soccer • Finished 11th out of 11 teams

    Men’s Cross Country • 2nd
    Volleyball • Currently 10th of 12 teams

    In order of ‘issue’ or ‘red-flag.’
    WCC should be dealt with post-haste; as should Men’s Soccer.
    Volleyball is actually improving… Men’s CC needs to be put ‘on watch’ and, if the end-of-year finish continues to slide in three successive years, a change should occur.

    The only question is: How LONG of a break has our AD taken from “cougar hunting” with the ‘old money good ol boys’ who run [into the ground] our university and athletics program? Will he continue to pay attention to stunningly horrific performance of coaches in his department, or will he pop more Viagra and be on the cougar hunt for another 2-3 years before he returns to do his job?

    We don’t have much depth to our programs. Only a few compete for conference honors annually.

    This HAS to be near the ‘low water mark’ in the history of all NC State programs.

    GodAlmighty, bring Fowler, Oblinger, and the Trustees together and send a tornado down on their thin, pointed, privileged, prick-shaped heads and tear them limb from limb. Their “leadership” [deep irony] reeks the stench of death.

    I think the slide in XC (after years of carrying the torch along with the wrestling team of being the only programs to sustain excellence in the ACC) shows that when an overall perception of your university as a school of losers develop, it will eventually drag down even your successful programs.

    In overall athletic achievement we are down there in national perception with schools like Baylor, Temple, Rutgers, Iowa State, Washington State–perenially also-rans in most sports, and that perception of non-competitiveness has to influence recruiting even in sports like XC where we actually have some tradition of winning.

    The $1,000,000 question: Was she forced out or did she take it on herself to leave?

    If the answer is the latter, then our state of affairs is much more tragic than I could have ever imagined. People with good jobs are quitting because their personal expectations outweigh those of their boss. Unreal.

    Another non-revenue sport to pay attention to is the Men’s Golf team, they are currently ranked in the top 20 after the fall season and have the number 1 player in the country on the team according to golfweek.com rankings from this week.

    I just realized the other day that Caldwell was still on the Wrestling team after all that talk about him transferring to Rutgers. He is ranked 4th in his weight class.
