Post-Game Thoughts

* NC State took the field against a good, versatile QB and an excellent, athletic defense (justifiably a Top 15-20 caliber team, unlike ECU) without one single above-average player on either side of the ball. We could play USF 100 times, and we’d lose at least 99.

* USF clearly watched film of last week’s second half. They attacked the areas where Nate Irving would have been early and repeatedly – to incredibly good results (3 TDs on first 3 drives, rarely even getting to 3rd down). They are well-coached, and it showed.

* Harrison Beck underthrew several deep balls in the first half, with WRs breaking wide open. When he doesn’t hit passes like that, our offense wouldn’t threaten a good D-III defensive unit.

* We are damned lucky Russell Wilson couldn’t play today (or that TOB was smart enough to hold him out). The Bulls’ defensive line is sick, and they beat the shit out of Harrison Beck. Fortunately, Beck brings lots of extra padding to the field. In all seriousness, Beck deserves our kudos for hanging in there the whole game and not playing scared. This is not to be confused with playing well – but he took one for the team.

* I don’t know what it is with NC State and waiting for the snap. Against Clemson, we seemingly jumped offsides every other play. Tonight, it was the offense’s turn for repeated false starts.

* As an NC State fan, you are playing with house money this year. Savor every win, and every good effort you get from this ragtag bunch, and quit expecting a baseline of respectability based on those brief shining monents. This is an absolutely awful football team (no depth, scant athleticism, player attrition, 2+ years of terrible recruiting by Amato), and your average coach would win no more than 1 or 2 games with this roster. You can expect respectability and 2009, and real Tom O’Brien teams in 2010 and 2011. Remember, O’Brien’s first real recruiting class is in its true freshman year.

* Our students are pretty awesome. The harder it rained, the louder they got, despite no realistic hope for winning (or even competing in) the game. At least half of them stayed at least until halftime, while over 80% of the rest of the fans hightailed it to their cars early in the second quarter.

* I drove home barefoot (yes, I stayed almost to the end of the third quarter – maybe 4,000 non-Vaughn Towers fans remained). It was the best decision I made all night.

^Good thoughts, and I agree w/ all your points …

I’ve copied my comment from the other thread to here as it is more appropriate …

Meh, we got beat bad by a superior team … that’s about what it comes down to

Yeah, it would’ve helped had the D even looked like they were trying to pressure Grothe at least once in a while – but at the same time you have to give the Bulls credit … They were clicking in the first half and we were somewhere else

I hate to throw away games, but we’re not that good to start with and about half of out team is either out or playing with injuries … Excuses? – Sure, but even w/ tonight’s game if you step back and take a look at our program from the start of last season to now I’m amazed we’re 7-10 (over that span of time) …

THIS IS NOT A VERY GOOD TEAM and yet we were on the verge of a bowl last season and I’m confident we’ll get a couple of more victories this season … Add to that the fact that we derailed ECU’s “Dream Season” and we still have a shot at beating Chapel Hole and maybe it makes it a little easier to let this game go

Horrible perfomance? Yeah, but let’s try to keep it all in perspective … Hopefully our “falling down” seasons under TOB end this year and we can start “walking and running” next season (I know, I know – typical Pack fan speak – but I believe in TOB and the foundation he’s trying to set)

Thank the lord Russell didn’t play or he would have gotten destroyed. I know one of the hits that Beck took would have without a doubt aggravated a recent concussion. He got hit HARD. Two concussions and you’re probably done the year.

Beck wasn’t great, but he wasn’t terrible. That kick to the end zone was actually a very smart play, much better to get a safety than chance a touchdown.

Beck is definitely a tough kid, and true to his word. He never stopped throwing into double coverage. File that one away, we’ll get ’em in 2014 if not sooner.

Injury update: Harrison Beck’s wrist in a soft cast. Is this good or bad for us? :-/

“Injury update: Harrison Beck’s wrist in a soft cast. Is this good or bad for us? :-/”

That all depends on how you feel about Daniel Evans moving up on the depth chart. Burke should have stuck it out as it turns out…he prolly would have gotten his shot sooner rather than later.

  6. Wufpacker 09/28/2008 at 5:27 AM #

Oh, and forgot to mention that you are quite right about the abuse heaped upon Beck in the backfield. There were at least 2 hits I fully expected he would not get up from. To his credit he did, and as you said, deserves kudos for sticking in the pocket as well as he did.

It would have been interesting to see what a more mobile QB (read: Russell Wilson) could have done, but all in all I’m happy he wasn’t in there tonite as he likely would have once again been “broken” before halftime, and this time perhaps for the long term.

And as an aside, it should be noted that while USF played a very aggressive, tough, tenacious style of D and did punish Beck, they did not (that I noticed anyway) resort to taking cheap shots at him when they had the chance. SCar should take note of this small, yet important distinction.

I almost made it until halftime, but I think this may be the best team we play all year. Their offense was pretty damn impressive and their defense was solid without what Tony Haynes was calling the best pass rusher in the college game.

  8. Ed89 09/28/2008 at 7:45 AM #

Their offense was good, but our defense was REALLY bad. No pressure on the QB, and just about every pass was to an open receiver. I’m all for zone pass defense, but mix it up every now and then. You’re not going to win many games when the opposing offense scores a TD on it’s first three possessions…then puts up a total of 41 points. We are at least a year, probably two or three years off, but I do think TOB will get it turned around.

  9. RAWFS 09/28/2008 at 8:02 AM #

Even though he had a bad night, I think Andre Brown is an ‘above-average’ player, but that’s quibbling.

We got drubbed from the first play to the last. This State team needs to ask themselves some hard questions this morning in film session.

BJD – Good points. In every way, that game was brutal. I’m glad you singled out Beck for his heart and toughness. He definitely showed it out there today…Just an FYI – a Left wrist/hand/ arm injury could impact your ability to throw even if you are right handed…that could have been the problem w/ those passes.

Grothe is a very good college qb. Throws well on the run, makes good decisions and is a threat to run.

Last night was as miserable as I’ve ever been in Carter Finley stadium from a comfort standpoint. The rain caught me by surprise – I didn’t have a parka. Luckily, because it was cold in winston – I did bring a pair of jeans and a windbreaker in case it got cold in Raleigh. Thank heavens for that, because I was able to drive home dry – and yes, barefooted.

Sometimes massive suckage can be a blessing. Today, I woke up and thought, “Man…we got killed last night.” And then I laughed, thinking about how awful we are.

What if you’re a Georgia fan? First of all, you woke up hungover. Secondly, your weekend is ruined. You’re going to get the crap kicked out of you at work because you talked junk all last week and your entire season is a disappointment!

What if you’re a Wisconsin fan? Or an ECU fan? Or a Florida fan?

You know my hopes for this year are? That we win one more game and avoid a ten-loss season. Ain’t no way we’re beating Carolina…but I just hope we avoid 10 losses.

Beyond that? I have no hopes for NC State sports.

In the game thread I compared NC State to Alabama and Michigan. Bama was a mess before Saban arrived. However, I will concede the point, they are Alabama, and we are NC State. Enough said. It was a silly comparison, agreed.

But what about what Cutcliffe has been able to do at Duke so far, in his first year? And I think it’s safe to say now that Butch Davis at least has the Heels headed in the right direction. They are competitive. I cannot say the same for ourselves. I really don’t know what the future holds. I never expected a win last night playing a fourth string QB against a very talented team. And yes, I understand there are many other injuries, none more important than Irving. However, we looked bad last night, and bad in every way. From a competitive standpoint, we didn’t show up. And that’s just inexcusable in my book. Our offensive line was horrendous. 26 yards rushing. Our defensive line was even worse. 245 yards for the Bulls. Why is this happening? Our secondary was giving up 10 yards on just about every throw.

Yes, it was a good win against ECU last week, but ECU barely scraped by Tulane and lost to Houston this week. I don’t think we need to be hanging our hats on that one as a “signature” win. I’m sorry but my expectations are higher.

Houston Nutt, in his first year at Ole Miss, beat the Gators in their house. Again, I understand the value of patience. But I need to see something more from us before I I can truly believe the Wolfpack proverbial “next year, or the year after, we’re going to be good” doctrine.

The only silver lining, in my book, is that the ACC is looking worse every week. There isn’t a game remaining on our schedule where we shouldn’t at least be able to compete. Maybe we can win a few more and I will feel differently, who knows.

  13. Sw0rdf1sh 09/28/2008 at 9:04 AM #

Beck played like a man and took some tough shots. He did underthrow some wide open routes, and that I couldn’t believe it from his past tendency to overthrow the wide open bomb.

The receivers did a decent job of catching what was there, glad to see Howard get his hands on that deep ball. Andre, again inflicted some damage on his check downs.

I stayed for the entire game, got half soaked from my seat just under the overhang, and then went down to front and center on the 50 for the 3rd and 4th quarter. I got to holla good words at the players and even though there was no one in the stands, I was happy to be standing there.

Next week is BC and a conference game and I’m pretty sure we will see RW back under center. It was good to see ol Clem Johnson in the game, although he barely played.

  14. EverettBeez 09/28/2008 at 9:08 AM #

Do not over look the fact that Ole Miss was up on Wake, and let Wake come back and win. OR the fact the Ole Miss turned the ball over 6 times last week against Vandy, including a fumble, on the goal line, that would’ve won the game. Nutt & the Rebels had a big win, I am still basking in the afterglow – even though I know it will be overshadowed by the freaking Bama fans – but don’t start holding Mississippi up as something better then State, not yet. Nutt’s predecessor left him a lot to work with. TOB’s, not so much.

  15. BJD95 09/28/2008 at 9:12 AM #

Sad as it is to say, Duke has more talent on defense than we do. And their QB hasn’t gotten hurt. There’s a fine line between “scrappy and competitive” and downright awful. And I wouldn’t be surprised if State and Duke finish with the same record in conference play.

  16. PackMan97 09/28/2008 at 9:17 AM #

As BJD95 mentioned, Duke has not had the injury bug bite them. This NC State team, would have a shot at becoming bowl eligible if everyone had stayed healthy. Not to mention, I think with Duke’s schedule, NC State would be sitting at 3-1, with an outside shot at 4-0. Despite the great job Cutcliffe has done at Duke, they may not win another game this season.

  17. SidtheKid 09/28/2008 at 9:22 AM #

Additionally, do not overlook the fact that Ed Ogeron did a great job recruiting at Ole Miss, took JUCO transfers and non qualifiers from other schools.

Additionally, he accepted transfers of highly ranked recruits bailed on schools that didnt give them playing time. Their QB was a Florida recruit who went to Texas after Florida went after Tebow and transferred to Ole Miss after being stuck behind Colt McCoy.

  18. Scooter 09/28/2008 at 9:54 AM #

I stayed until the middle of the third quarter yesterday and I think I’m still wet. It was pretty clear from the player selections that this was a throw-away game, especially on defense. It wouldn’t have made sense to throw in the best we have from a baren cupboard against a team with superior talent and depth at nearly every position.

One thing that I have seen that is very troubling about our team, regardless of who we have under center, is the dropped passes by our receivers. Has anyone else noticed that we seem to drop a LOT of passes?

  19. redfred2 09/28/2008 at 11:15 AM #

I see the tunnel, I’m just not seeing the light.

And to think, just yesterday I was complaining about how James Oblinger seems to be a little too detached from ALL athletics at NC State University.

Smart man, I’m about ready to join him.

“Despite the great job Cutcliffe has done at Duke, they may not win another game this season.”

They do play us, so they have that.

I hope that Russell Wilson can go Saturday…seeing Daniel Evans commanding another game may make me jump over the top of the second deck by the end of the first quarter.

Any comparisons to our team to any team in the SEC, Big Ten, or Pac 10 is completely dillusional! We can only be compared to a second division Division II(or I-IIa or whatever) football team. As much as I hope TO can change that, we just plain stink!

  22. haze 09/28/2008 at 11:54 AM #

We were completely outmanned last night. The only position on the field where we were equal was at RB, where Brown/Eugene/Underwood still look great.

The disparity of talent was most plainly visible on the lines, where we’re not great but not really all that bad. Thing is, they were a lot better. At QB, Beck deserves credit for manning up and taking some hits. I respect him for surviving that onslaught and for being generally competent throughout. The INT’s were inevitable given USF’s lead and pass rush. On the other side, Grothe has great feet, a good arm and was pretty much mistake free throughout. That’s a lot easier to do when you’re under no pressure at all but, still, he did it without breaking a sweat.

Overall, USF should be held up as an example of what you can be if you get strong lines and a solid QB and then coach them all up. FSU/Miami would be the examples of having the players and then coaching them down. If you’re NC State, currently coaching up a mishmash of lesser talent (partly due to injuries), you may be able to knock off similar talent or poorly coached clubs with superior talent but you aren’t going to bother well-coached studs. We got waxed and probably would lose this game 90+% of the time.

Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if USF is as good a model as we’ve seen for where TOB is trying to take NC State.

  23. ChiefJoJo 09/28/2008 at 12:00 PM #

Good post and agree on most points. We do have a few above average players, but that’s beside the point, as we don’t have anywhere near enough of them, and everyone should know that.

Our DL got gashed repeatedly, could apply zero pressure, and they took advantage of Maddox. I think the loss of Cash and Irving along with Wilson might be the most critical injuries we’ve suffered. Somehow we were able to weather the storm last week on guts, emotion, and opportunistic play.

My wish after last week was to win the mythical state championship by beating Duke, UNC, and Wake, but not sure that is realistic with this team. Despite Wake’s loss, all three look better at this point. It’s very likely that we will not be favored in any game the remainder of the season.

On a positive note, it is very possible that USF is the best & most complete team we will face this year at a point where we are completely outmanned all over the field. I can’t see anyone in the ACC that is better right now. BC? Wake? Duke? Miami? FSU? UNC? UMD? Nope. This might be the low point for us.

Anyone know if Julian Williams is OK? Man, it’s not Wolfpack football without at least one starter going down.

  24. redfred2 09/28/2008 at 1:00 PM #

I’m just wondering what TOB’s mental state is about right now? He’s got to be frustrated and bewildered if for nothing more than the pitiful luck and the ever increasing number of injuries. I don’t know if his Marine training will allow him to accept that it’s OK to lose at ANY time, but that is the way it has to be.

It’ll get better in the future though. Things are always better in “THE FUTURE”, for us Wolpack fans and coaches alike.

There is one good thing out there though, in the meantime we do have some really nice venues inwhich to get our asses throttled. Thanks Lee. Thanks Oblinger.

How many times are you allowed to try and rebuild, or add new parts to the EXISTING equipment, before you finally decide that the underlying problem lies in what WAS/IS already there???

  25. redfred2 09/28/2008 at 1:17 PM #

    ^I’ll answer my own question.

Over my own lifetime and existence as a diehard, NC STATE WOLFPACK fan, it is a freaking eternity.
