We’re #56!!! NCSU finishes 53rd of 66 BCS Schools (must be the ‘fuhcilities’)

The final ‘all-sports’ intercollegiate Directors Cup for 2007-2008 has been released and is accessible by clicking here. (Looks like Lee Fowler’s second embarrassment in one day.)

NC State didn’t obtain extra credit for our great ‘fuhcilities’ or our fantastic fans and therefore finished the year ranked 56th in the country and next to last in the Atlantic Coast Conference, besting private institution Boston College.

NC State finished #56 in the Director’s Cup in “Coach” Lee Fowler’s first year as Athletics Director in 2000-2001 and before he set out on his important ‘seven year facilities plan’ that was proclaimed finished in yesterday’s release of the Athletics Department’s annual report. So, after all of those important facilities that had to be built before we could start holding coaches accountable, the Wolfpack’s program is sitting exactly where it was in Fowler’s first year on the job and worse than the average of State’s finishes under both Les Robinson and Todd Turner’s tenure as ADs at NC State (when our facilities were so bad). (Click here for a detailed comparison of recent ADs at NC State).

Additionally, NC State finished 53rd of all 66 BCS (major conference) institutions. The Wolfpack bested 13 schools – Iowa State, Vanderbilt (Lee Fowler’s alma mater who does not have an actual Athletics Department), Ole Miss, Boston College, Kansas State, Washington State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Oregon State, South Florida, Mississippi State, Rutgers and Cincinnati.

* A sampling of ‘surprising’ programs that ranked ahead of NC State include the following: Hawaii, Denver, UConn, Baylor, BYU and Northwestern.

* State bested Texas Christian by a quarter of one point (365.5 to 365.25).

* Princeton and Harvard do not provide athletics scholarships and finished only five and six spots behind NC State, respectively.

* Fresno State, Tulsa, UTEP, Northern Iowa and Navy all finished within striking distance of the Wolfpack (within 10 spots)

* NC State was beaten by three of the ACC’s four private institutions including Miami and Wake Forest.

The ACC’s rankings ended up as follows:
14. UNC
15. FSU
17. UVA
19. Duke
37. Va Tech
43. Clemson
45. Wake Forest
46. Miami
52. Maryland
55. Ga Tech
56. NC State
69. BC

Eight years of opportunity for “Coach Fowler” to improve things in Raleigh…and after spending all that money on all of those facilities and growing the Wolfpack Club into one of the five largest booster clubs in America, we currently sit EXACTLY where we started.

And the Board of Trustees…and Chancellor…and everyone else are just fine with everything.

To where do I return my sheepskin! This is appalling! That a (good-ol’-boy) BOT and chancellor can sit by while the university is embarrassed like this without taking IMMEDIATE and effective action is unthinkable. I disown NCSU!

Not surprised to see my school, Tulsa, so high up (and that’s without a baseball team). Against some serious obstacles–small enrollment, private school, decent academic standards, OU and OSU taking up almost all the state’s best athletes, with ORU getting a few as well–Tulsa is competitive most every year in football and basketball, and do very well in a few non-revenue sports (soccer, tennis–including hosting the NCAA championships this time around). The school seems to make smart hires, and when those get poached, more are brought in. If a coach fails to show steady improvement, he is shown the door within a few years.

I’m going on about this not because anyone cares about Tulsa, but because it shows that no matter what level you’re at, steady improvement is not too much to expect; at minimum, there should be basic competence on display. Some of State’s programs are embarrassments, and the administration seems perfectly content for them to stay that way.

The only ACC team we finished ahead of was Boston College. At least this year they earned a hockey national championship, a men’s soccer ACC title, a bowl trophy and had the #3 overall pick in the NFL draft to make them feel a little better about themselves.

Looks like everything is going according to plan, we’re in the top two, pages that is.

Not much of anything good happening on any level, yet the ca$h just keeps on rolling in. There is no way to stop this reoccurring train wreck.

  6. redfred2 06/26/2008 at 6:14 PM #

I know at one time there we were considering it a lesser position, or even a lateral move at best, but it sure makes you rethink ” “‘s decision to go to ASU.

  7. redfred2 06/26/2008 at 6:24 PM #

    “(must be the ‘fuhcilities’)”

I think maybe the word is “futilities”.

    Here’s a mathematical word problem for you…

If you were the Chancellor at a large university and you had the findings of the 2007-2008 Director’s Cup at your disposal, add to that a recent and stupid as hell phone call into radio talk show, would the total of both of those factors be,( > or < ) the total donations for that same year.

I’m pretty sure which answer the holier than thou, the upstanding and all knowing, that “class act” of an administration, led by none other that Jimmy Oblinger himself, will choose.

I had a guy work on my car the other day and he pretty much screwed it up. When I took it back he wanted more money to fix what he didn’t fix in the first place. What did I do? I told him I wasn’t pleased, and that I’d never be back into his place of business.

Silly me, I need to get with the program. I think I’ll sit down, right now, and write that loser a big fat bonus check for doing such shitty work.

I do not for the life of me, understand how so many extremely successful business people, who will stand for nothing but performance and quality in their own personal pursuits, continue to finance such a losing proposition.

Oh well, I guess I’m all alone, and all rung over nothing AGAIN.

“A sampling of ’surprising’ programs that ranked ahead of NC State include the following: Hawaii, Denver, UConn, Baylor, BYU and Northwestern.”

    In a word – disgraceful.

Well, I am glad those facilities improvements made a difference. Now, I won’t argue that they weren’t needed, but they sure didn’t make a difference.

It is so hard to be a State fan.

  13. blpack 06/26/2008 at 8:14 PM #

The facilities are built, the games have been played, and we are dropping like a rock. In year number 8 it is time to smell the coffee. Hello BOT!

  14. redfred2 06/26/2008 at 8:33 PM #

I don’t know exactly what it means for JJ, but ESPN just flashed that Hickson is the third player from NC State to be selected in the first round since 2005.

Of course that would be plus Hodge and Simmons.

  15. redfred2 06/26/2008 at 8:39 PM #

Why would a kid/future NBA player who is fully expecting to be selected in the first round, not even attend the draft? It’s not just Hickson, there are a lot of them not there.

  16. mafpack 06/26/2008 at 8:54 PM #

I’m truly glad that JJ was selected as high as he was after so many raised doubts about his ability to move to the next level succesffully (that his individual workouts showed so much promise is amazing to me). Also happy to see that he was selected by a team with such a huge upside as Cleveland (who the heck thought I’d be saying that a few years ago).

Congrats to he and his family who will surely benefit from this awesome opportunity in the league. Good luck JJ!

    THANKS DUH?FOULUP(ASSWIPE)!

As the UNC fans call us = The joke university or no champs university.

  18. turfpack 06/26/2008 at 9:21 PM #

I say – fire everyone in the athletics dept.-then hire the monkeys in those funny commercials on TV -BANANA’S ARE NOT CHEAP BUT WHAT THE HELL-athletics would get better right away.
Also we wouldn’t have to watch Lee’s stupidass show in the off season.

  19. Ed89 06/26/2008 at 9:58 PM #

Noticed that ESPN had “needs to improve” — WORK ETHIC for JJ. Just shows they don’t know wtf they’re talking about. He needs to improve some things — defense, passing, moving w/o the ball, but the kid has a good work ethic. I wish him the best!!!!

  20. 66pack 06/27/2008 at 7:03 AM #

turfpack -its no champs for the school and ALL CHUMPS for the alumni supporters of ncsu athletics

  21. choppack1 06/27/2008 at 8:41 AM #

Ed89 -I have no idea whether or not JJ has a great work ethic. I’m no fan of ESPN, but I doubt that they’d put it as a weakness if they didn’t at least hear reports that it was an issue from more than one source. That doesn’t mean it’s true, but obviously they heard it from someone.

We had a great discussion about a week ago concerning ACC expansion. I pointed out that since full expansion, the league had failed to land a team in the championship game of either football or basketball or gotten a second team into a BCS bowl. Most felt that this was a coincidence and not indicative of expansion hurting the competitiveness of ACC teams. I tend to agree with this argument but here is another measure that reflects a very poor showing by the league. UNC is the highest rated league team at 14th. I am pretty sure this is their worst performance in years and maybe ever. There are 5 PAC 10 that ended up higher than 14th. Keep in mind that there are only 10 Teams in the PAC 10. This means one half of their programs outperformed the ACC’s best (out of 12 teams) on this measurement.

Is there any parallel between the ACC and NC State in terms of being cash cows first and highly competitive second?

  23. Noah 06/27/2008 at 9:24 AM #

At this point, anyone who continues to give any amount of money to NC State’s booster club either is a chump or is simply far too charitable for words.

I would think that as you lick the envelope containing your donation, there’s a better than average chance that Ash-hole…I mean Ashton Kutcher jumps out and yells, “You got punked!”
