NC State supporters highlight Lee Fowler’s 2007-2008 annual report

Athletic Director Lee Fowler released the 2007-2008 annual report for NC State Athletics. Except for a few individual student-athletes and a couple individual programs, it was the accomplishments of NC State’s fantastic supporters and fans that received the most attention in the report.

First, the NC State fans helped land Head Football Coach, Tom O’Brien; now, the support of the very fans that Lee Fowler so often criticizes provides his athletics program its primary success story of the year. (Oh the irony)

Here are a few of the highlights:

– NC State fans soldout Carter-Finley Stadium for the seventh consecutive year and sold a record number of season tickets(37,500) despite coming off of a 3-9 season in 2006 which was the 2nd losing season in the previous three years.

-Revenue from football tickets reached an all-time high – $10.75 million

-Basketball attendence averaged 15,043 which was the 2nd highest total in the program’s history a year after the team did not even participate in the NCAA tournament. This total moved our national ranking in attendence from 18th to 16th.

-Members of the Wolfpack Club also hit a membership mark of 20,256 which puts the club in the top five nationally

-WPC members set an all-time record for annual giving at $10.0 million; 2nd highest capital giving in the last five years($13.7 million); highest endowment giving of the last five years($1.8 million); and 2nd highest total giving of the last five years($25.4 million)

Basketball attendance: surprising, considering the way the year went. That says a lot about the mettle and caliber of NC State fans. Damned insane lunatic fringers, each and every one of you. (I kid, I kid)

Seriously, SFN, I am a bit surprised you didn’t not the expectations for football and basketball and the differences between. That was the most striking aspect of the document I saw.

SFN: We’re just getting warmed up! Had to get this thing out there for you guys to have something to discuss, however.

Of course revenue from football tickets is up: the price went up!

RAWSF: I usually leave commentary in terms of what you mentioned to the other contributors here. But I also thought those comments were rather odd. But for those concerned with basketball, we should all be glad to know that Lee “I know basketball” Fowler is closely involved now.

so what your saying is, we spent a ton of money on a totally shitty product?

Somebody call Clark Howard! We’re getting ripped off!

  6. redfred2 06/25/2008 at 3:49 PM #

Not on the playing field of course, that doesn’t seem to even be a factor, but for the administration, this is a no lose scenario. We have to face the facts, there is nothing that would give a person like James statusquOblinger any indication that there is reason for change of any kind, much less that it’s a necessity.

Those guys in Raleigh are ranked in the upper echelon among their contemporaries, the money just keeps rolling in, and that is ALL that matters to them.

Blah blah blah blah . . . same old Foulup BS!

  8. Astral Rain 06/25/2008 at 3:55 PM #

Things won’t change until they start losing money.

I hate saying it, but the only real solution is to make NCSU lose money.

If you look on page 3 of the report, it lists 15 programs that participated in post-season play and/or finished in the top 25. Women’s swimming finished 43rd in the NCAA’s and diver Kristin Davies finished 13th in the platform dive. Women’s swimming is not on that list. So that means in the athletic department’s annual report THEY LEFT OUT A SPORT!!

Does anybody proofread or fact check this stuff? Sadly I’m not surprised.

As a fan, I hope Sid has offered this kid. I’m only half joking.

Kind of reminds you how the government takes money from you for all of the “programs”. We all can see what the return on that investment has been over the years, right? With all of the seat rights, the WPC(gov’t) has everyone by the cods, and they can keep extorting money from holders who fear loss of seats or position in the pecking order. So, it’s just pay up, with little return to show for the investment at this point except for some shiny new infrastructure. At least we seem to be headed in the right direction in football and baseball, perhaps even basketball if there was any learning done this year. All of this in spite of Fowler.

^B, that young kid is a two sport athlete, I don’t think we really want that type of athlete in Raleigh.

Sorta reminds us how stupid we are to support such a travesty financially!

I read this annual report and I have 3 questions:

    1. What does Lee Fowler’s Charity Golf Classic has to do with the annual report for NCSU? It definitely didn’t pertain to program performance, capital, facilities, scholarships, or anything else associated with the program.

    2. One of the biggest accomplishments this year was this:

“A Memorandum of Understanding was negotiated with the NCSU
Bookstore to establish a 5-year merchandising partnership.”

So, you are telling me that the NCSU Bookstore is going to sell NCSU related merchandise? Really? Shocking! And we needed to establish a new partnership. I don’t really understand this one.

    3. In the Future Considerations section, the only sports discussed are the two major revenue sports. And I find the basketball information very odd to put in an annual report:

“A winning season and postseason play are our goals. I (Lee Fowler) have reviewed every major aspect of our basketball program and Coach Lowe and I are working closely on operational effectiveness, staff assignments and strategies for improving overall competitive effort
    (every player-playing hard-all the time).”

The “every player-playing hard-all the time” didn’t seem to be something that I would put in an annual report.

But what do I know, I am just a fan and a Wolfpack Club donor.

A few observations based on the report and the comments:

I find it noteworthy that Fowler lets us know he is on top of the basketball program, and notes many of the complaints lobbied on sites such as SFN, RAWFS, and SEC6, i.e., laziness. I thought that cat never read the internet, perhaps big donors do I guess, or it’s that obvious.

Concerning money, and complaints about how said money results in performance: I graduated from 2 institutions, NCSU undergrad and Alabama law. I am a member of the Bama alumni association, not so with State, I put my money with Bama rather than NCSU. I read primarily State blogs, and occasionally check in with Bama recruiting status. I never miss a State bball or fball game. I catch Bama football unless State is playing, and rarely catch a bball game.

Long story short, during the Herb fiasco, I decided that as long as Fowler was at the helm, I would not financially contribute to the cluster that is NCSU athletics. I e-mailed the Wolfpack Club to let my intentions known, and stood by my word. While I am more of an NCSU fan than Bama, I spend my money on a program I think is guided by a desire to win. As financially successful as NCSU athletics has been, imagine the results if the athletic leadership showed a desire to produce, rather than self promote. I am only one, but I am not alone in my actions, I promise you that.

ncsumatman, as a veteran of several games at Bryant-Denny Stadium, I would love to see you compare and contrast Alabama’s tailgating and NC State’s.

News release from the Lee Fowler department. The par for the Lee Fowler Invivational Golf tournament has been reaised to 96. Lee Fowler is quoted as saying “we want to make sure everyone has a chance to shoot par”.

^ They are also making everyone walk the course becuase the use of 20th century technology like carts is too negative and allows everyone to move around the course far too quickly. It becomes too much of a disadvantage to “Coach”.

  19. RAWFS 06/26/2008 at 9:54 AM #

I understand that featheries and hickory shafts are required as well.

And we all know who has a hundred-year old putter.

  20. redfred2 06/26/2008 at 11:27 AM #

    Like I’ve said before…

    NCSU = Bushwood CC

  21. WolftownVA81 06/26/2008 at 11:34 AM #

So now we’ve told the universe that we have chemistry problems and our players are lazy. Why would anyone want to play b-ball for us?

  22. RAWFS 06/26/2008 at 12:29 PM #

    Like I’ve said before…

    NCSU = Bushwood CC

If that means that Lacy Underalls in on our team…

    …just sayin’

“A sampling of ’surprising’ programs that ranked ahead of NC State include the following: Hawaii, Denver, UConn, Baylor, BYU and Northwestern.”

    In a word – disgraceful.

  24. LRM 06/28/2008 at 11:20 AM #

Actually, it’s not all that surprising. Hawaii has more BCS appearances than we do and the others all have the same amount.

Shameful would have been a better word.

  25. howlie 06/28/2008 at 4:47 PM #

So the ‘success’ of the Wolfpack Club in spite of massive athletics failure means the Wolfpack Club ‘backs’ this AD?

Can we get a statement from Bobby Purcell that his organization is impressed with our AD?
