NCAA & ACC Championships since 2000

The table below that can be seen in larger a format by clicking here ranks Atlantic Coast Conference institutions by the number of ACC Championships claimed since 2000 (the year that Lee Fowler came to NC State). Additionally, the italicized numbers in parantheses is the rank for each school in the designated column. For example, NC State ranks 12th (last) in number of National Championships and 9th (last of pre-expansion ACC schools) in number of different sports in which we have won an ACC Championship.

ACC & NCAA Titles

Some following notes &; bytes:

* The table ranks Atlantic Coast Conference institutions on the number of ACC Championships claimed by the institution since 2000 (the year that Lee Fowler came to NC State). The italicized numbers in parantheses is the rank for each school in the designated column.

* NC State is the only pre-expansion Atlantic Coast Conference school who has not won a National Championship in any sport. Virginia Tech, who joined the ACC with expansion in 2004/2005 is the only other ACC school to fail to win a National Championsip.

* NC State ranks 6th in total number of ACC Championships (edging Georgia Tech who recently hired a new Athletics Director) by one title.

* The depth and breadth of NC State’s ACC Championships are the most shallow in the conference as State and Wake Forest have each won Championships in only four sports. Wake Forest’s student enrollment is approximately 10% the size of NC State’s and represents the smallest student enrollment of any BCS football program in America.

* In just four years, Virginia Tech has already won Championships in five unique sports. The only schools that are tied or rank below NC State in number of different sports with a conference title are the former Big East programs who joined the ACC with expansion in 2004/2005 and private institutions with significantly smaller resource and alumni bases.

* The breakdown of NC State’s 14 ACC Championships are as follows:
– 5 in Men’s Cross Country
– 4 in Women’s Cross Country
– 1 in Softball
– 4 in Wrestling

* Prior to Fowler’s arrival in Raleigh, NC State had historically strong programs in three of those four sports under long time coaches Rollie Gieger and Bob Guzzo. Men’s Cross Country had won 9 ACC titles before Fowler arrived in Raleigh; Women’s Cross Country had won 17 ACC Titles pre-Fowler; and Wrestling had won 10 ACC titles.

* Despite years of focus and promotion for new facilities by Lee Fowler and NC State’s leadership, the only programs at NC State to win ACC Championships don’t/didn’t have facilties (running in the woods for cross-country and no field for softball) or share 60 year old Reynolds Coliseum with various other sports (wrestling).

* Since the beginning of the 2004 fall semester, both North Carolina and Duke have won more ACC Championships than NC State has won since 2000. Therefore, our biggest and closest rivals have added more ACC titles to their trophy cases in 4 years as NC State has in 8 years, twice that time.

* If you were to average the ranking of each school in all four categories, NC State would rank LAST amongst pre-expansion ACC programs with a ranking #9.75. Virginia Tech, who has competed in the ACC for half the time as NC State, is only a half of ranking behind with an average of #10.25. Amongst pre-expansion institutions, Clemson and Georgia Tech rank closest to NC State at #7.5, a whopping 30% ahead of the Wolfpack.

Numbers don’t like and more of a reason for Fowler to move on. It’s embarrassing for us not to win any championship in any major sport. Goes to show that you don’t need facilities to win. it boils down to coaching and leadership from the AD’s office.

  2. old13 04/28/2008 at 11:36 AM #

I’d “like” to hear Foulup’s defense of that record, espceially in consideration of the facilities vs championships issue! Just because he says he wants to win doesn’t mean he has the foggiest idea of how to win! FIRE HIM NOW!

  3. BladenWolf 04/28/2008 at 11:41 AM #

I hope Uncle Jed reads this and resigns immediately. What a bafoon we have for an AD. A few more years of Fowler and we will certainly anchor the very bottom of the league.

Only a moron becomes angry and lashes out at the messenger(s) when confronted with the reality that his efforts are just not good enough.

Way to go…”Coach”. Keep up the good work. (Sigh).

  4. choppack1 04/28/2008 at 11:53 AM #

Don’t you guys understand? Lee wants to win! He wants us keyboard jockeys to understand that he wants to win! The ADs of the other athletic institutions don’t want win like wants to win – isn’t that obvious. When it comes to the AD job, 2 things are important – wanting to win and building facilities.

  5. Wulfpack 04/28/2008 at 12:04 PM #

I don’t know who is dumber, Fowler or those that continue to give, and give, and give.

As a good friend of mine, WV Wolf does deserve a lot of credit for this. He comes up with alarming statistics about our athletic program all the time. “Running through the woods” is a classic line. He and I were talking about this the other day.

If you limit your analysis to the varsity sports that NCSU competes in, that brings us to 21 sports. If you look at the total number of national championships won in those 21 sports since Fowler became athletic director, you will see that these 23 BCS schools have not a title in any of those sports:

    NC State
    Boston College
    Virginia
    Virginia Tech
    Kentucky
    Vanderbilt
    Mississippi
    Mississippi State
    Kansas State
    Iowa State
    Missouri
    Texas Tech
    Texas A&M
    Washington State
    Michigan State
    Purdue
    Northwestern
    Louisville
    West Virginia
    Rutgers
    South Florida
    Cincinnati
    Pittsburgh

As I stated, these are only schools who haven’t won a national title in a sport that the Wolfpack competes. What is the general impression about these athletic programs:

    ***New to BCS:

    Cincinnati
    South Florida
    Louisville
    Rutgers ***maybe

***So-called Academic schools (although Duke and Stanford do well):

    Northwestern
    Vanderbilt
Boston College (hockey titles don’t count)
Virginia (lacrosse and field hockey don’t count)

***Down era in traditional power sport:

    Kentucky (basketball)
    Texas A&M (football)
Michigan State (relatively down in basketball… title in 1999)
Virginia Tech (9 mths from BCS Champ game when Fowler arrived)
    Iowa State (wrestling)
    West Virginia (rifle)

    ***Mediocre athletic programs:

    NC State
    Mississippi
    Mississippi State
    Kansas State
    Missouri
    Texas Tech
    Washington State
    Purdue
    Pittsburgh

As an aside, NC State and Missouri deserve special mention in failing to win even a conference title in football, baseball, men’s basketball, or women’s basketball since the 1992-93 school year, which ironically enough, is the year I enrolled. Missouri did win the Big 12 North football title this year so that is something to note (and their baseball team was ranked #4 in last week’s Baseball America poll).

I really don’t think if fans quit giving money would be beneficial to our athletics program. It would be cutting off your nose to spite your face. We would take 2 steps back to hopefully take 3 forward later? LF does seem to be a moron who does not have good management skills or the necessary inherent qualities necessary to be successful in his position.

However, its the alumni who give the money who have more pull, not the ones who quit giving…Right? In regards to this specific blog, the ACC has more talent than other conferences. However, when will people learn that basketball and especially football are team sports? Jim Grobe (and TOB) understand this more than others. I think the ACC is the best overall conference in the country period in all sports cumulative.

  8. PackerInRussia 04/28/2008 at 12:54 PM #

Gentlemen, can we please stop trying to cloud the issue with things like facts and numbers? We’re on a winning track and we have a plan* to win.

*Any questions about said plan will not be permitted at this time.

Also, is it true that Lee planted a few trees in the woods so that he could claim that upgraded facilities are responsible for the wins in CC?

  9. Wulfpack 04/28/2008 at 1:04 PM #

Well JoeP we keep losing and we keep giving. We keep giving and LF can point to that as doing half of his job. Something has to give. The message is not being heard by the key decision makers. We stop giving, we keep losing, and suddenly LF is not doing any part of his job. You’re just feeding the fire if you continue to give.

My real fear is TOB is going to get our football program headed in a great direction, we’re going to give more and more, and he stays. IF Sid AND TOB tank, he HAS to go.

  10. wufpaxno1 04/28/2008 at 1:09 PM #

PackerInRussia, I just hope that they were trees and not poison Oak/Ivey.

  11. Rick 04/28/2008 at 1:42 PM #

This is just more crap from the lunatic fringe. What do you people expect as we can never compete with Duke and UNC?

  12. StateFans 04/28/2008 at 1:44 PM #

^ How about just competing with Maryland, Florida State Clemson, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech?

  13. WV Wolf 04/28/2008 at 2:13 PM #

These numbers certainly look familiar 🙂 Thanks to SFN for the props, I’m just glad to get this info out to the rest of the lunatic fringe.

You really don’t realize how bad our athletic program is until you start breaking down the numbers. And sadly just about every way I’ve looked at the numbers, they ain’t pretty.

PackerInRussia–excellent point about planting trees as cross country facility upgrades

  14. Trip 04/28/2008 at 2:19 PM #

Lee atleast has one half of the equation right to winning. Facilitys ARE an important part of winning because your team is better trained and better athletes come to better facilitys. It’s just too bad that they aren’t the whole part of winning 🙁

  15. ruffles31 04/28/2008 at 2:45 PM #

By planting some trees, at least Fowler is helping NCSU “Go Green.”

SFN: Green should be our new color in light of all of the money that we raise when compared to our successes.

  16. Rick 04/28/2008 at 2:53 PM #

“How about just competing with Maryland, Florida State Clemson, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech?”

I would have thought my post would trigger your sarcasm meter but apparently it did not.

SFN: LOL! It registered. Just needed to throw it out there for effect.

  17. Wolfman300 04/28/2008 at 3:52 PM #

How could ya’ll forget about our national championship in Bass Fishing?

  18. StateFans 04/28/2008 at 4:49 PM #

Next step of “analysis” – Go look at ruffles31 great post in these comments section. This is great information. (We have a lot of that stuff that we will continue to share on the blog in the coming weeks).

Does anyone have access to any kind of information/ranking of athletics booster clubs? I know that that WPC has just been ranked in the top 5 of total booster club members…so, there has to be some of this information out there. Does anyone have access to this kind of booster info?

It would be particularly poignant to compare the financial and alumni support of NC State to the support of the other mediocre programs that are out there.

  19. redfred2 04/28/2008 at 5:15 PM #

    “IT”

Something that apparently both Lee Fowler and James Oblinger just do not have, and will never get.

  20. wolfman 04/28/2008 at 5:28 PM #

Actually I think Michigan State won their basketball title in 2000. But it was still before Lee took over and sank our athletic programs. But hey, we’re winning the facilities wars. And don’t forget our highly ranked Timbersports squad. I think they actually did the work for Lee’s CC facilities improvement program.

As far as unwavering support for crappy athletic programs, one school has us beat, and that is South Carolina.

  21. StateFans 04/28/2008 at 5:38 PM #

^ Michigan State also won a NATIONAL Basketball Championship and attended consecutive Final Fours in the last decade. So, there is little doubt that buys anyone some cushion and ‘happiness’ for a while.

  22. choppack1 04/28/2008 at 8:22 PM #

some great info here. This the kind of data to get out there…It’s not non-sensical, irrational rants, but data which tells its own story.

  24. wolfprof 04/28/2008 at 8:58 PM #

As an NC State prof, I have a suggestion for those who are weary of giving to the Athletic Department to fund outstanding facilities that produce losing teams. Think about your department or college. Unlike Wolfpack athletics, we do not wine and dine or make big media productions, and certainly do not have many nice facilities, but we do what this university was created for, lest people forget–educate students. Your gifts help make a difference in students’ experiences at NC State.’ Sorry this sounds like a commercial, but I hope it puts things in perspective.

  25. WolftownVA81 04/28/2008 at 9:09 PM #

Great post and nice job on the table. It printed out well and will go in to the WPC with my minimum contribution this year along with a note stating my displeasure with our AD. I may also include it in a letter to Oblinger. Its a very concise way to communicate our current AD’s failure. Thanks again.
