850 “The Buzz” Highlights Lack of Professionalism From BC’s AD

Click over to their blog for good analysis and comments (well, most are good). Quote from Jackhole DeFilippo:

“We’re having fun now,” he said. “We’ve won before, but we had no fun. This is still a game, it’s not life and death. The fun is back in Boston College football. Tom did a wonderful job here, but nobody was having fun. The fun is back at Boston College.”

We’ll see how much “fun” they have with unproven “Jags” in 2 or 3 years. Without Tom O’Brien’s players (let’s see how well he identifies “diamonds in the rough” that meet BC’s academic requirements, with no D-1 head coaching experience). Hell, even next year will be interesting, without the all-ACC (and 1st round NFL pick) QB – who single-handedly pulled the Eagles from the fire of sure losses at VT and Clemson. It wasn’t “Jags” playing “not to lose” that prevented a 4-4 ACC season – it was Matt Ryan making a play out of nothing.

Remember when Chuck Amato was “fun”? Time will tell, BC nation. Time will tell.

“The fun is back at Boston College.”
“Remember when the bookies muscle came by the locker room and threatened our Tail Back play ball or pay back his debts? Wow! Now that was fun.”

Obvious the situation was a festering, puss hole at BC. TOB walked away from everything he had established, and the scholl all his kids graduated from. His was the lowest paid coach in the ACC, but that wasn’t why he had to leave. After all TOB just needs a pair of new white othapedic walking shoes every year, and a new CHysler when the old one hits 100,000.

It was being underpaid AND having to listen to this monkey feces of an AD. Sad when Jed is seen as a voice of reason.

    Party it up BC!

The SR skill players on offense accounted for the following:
    99% of the passing attempts
    89% of the rushing attempts
    39% of the receptions

Mr. Crane (back-up QB) has thrown the ball at total of 4 times this season. Whew!

  4. RBCRowdy 11/29/2007 at 8:00 PM #

Total cheap shot, TOB saved that program. They aren’t in the ACC title game, all over ESPN, and playing with a Heisman candidate QB without TOB.

News-flash BC, everything is fun when you win

nice words from di fillipo about THE WINNINGEST FOOTBALL COACH IN THE HISTORY OF YOUR SCHOOL!

have you ever seen gene di fillipo and eaginatlanta in a room at the same time? there might be something to that.

“News-flash BC, everything is fun when you win”

Let’s see how much fun you have when you hit 3-9!!

  7. redfred2 11/29/2007 at 9:35 PM #

I think I’ll reserve all comments in this matter, it sounds way too familiar.

  8. Primewolf 11/29/2007 at 9:49 PM #

TOB must have really hurt some feelings when he left. I really can’t understand the acidity of their comments.

I guess it is about being “jilted”, but there must be some bad stuff underneath.

  9. choppack1 11/29/2007 at 10:28 PM #

RF – The biggest difference between TOB and Herb has always been the fact that TOB was the most successful BC coach in the modern era.

I agree that you are hearing some of the same things. But after yesterday, I think it’s easy to see that “fun” is fleeting.

Folks – I love SFN but I was wondering if y’all might know this is Jimmy V week on ESPN to raise money for cancer research. You can go her to donate https://www.jimmyv.org/donate/donations/

We can all give a little. Whatever we can afford — i’d just like us to put some money in a place where it means something from a guy who was a great coach for us and for Sid who is here because of Coach V.

Call it a challenge. I think SFN can set a precedent as being bigger than a blog and in time the results may come back to us all. Please donate.

Trade Matt Ryan for Daniel Evans… and the two schools similarly trade records this season.

  12. packplantpath 11/30/2007 at 9:41 AM #

Of course he is getting paid way out of proportion to what he accomplished this year. The real question is whether his pay is out of proportion to what he can accomplish given time. I don’t know. He does have history in his favor and he can clearly recruit, but only time will tell how well he can do at UNC.

They were in a terrible situation and it is one anybody who goes after a “name” coach could be in. If they preemptively pony up the cash, they look dumb for rewarding a piss poor season. If they don’t and he bolts, somebody will complain about a lack of commitment to football.

Personally, I say they should have dared him to leave just to test him out. Don’t offer a monetary raise, just insert in the contract that they have to commit X amount of funds to improve the stadium, increase assistants salary, etc. If he didn’t stay, then it’s proof he didn’t want just a commitment to football, but he is a cash whore (or he really wanted to go back to his alma mater). That way, they cover all bases.

With the raise, either he does great, and it looks like a brilliant move or he tanks and they all looks stupid. Here is to hoping they all look stupid.

While waiting in line to get my Wii on Wednesday (I got it!!), I was talking to a couple of BC fans who also had a nephew that played football at BC. A back-up kicker, I believe. Anyway, I asked about how they felt about TOB. They said they all loved him, and were sorry to see him go, especially their nephew. Said the players all loved him. They said the problem was with the AD. He and TOB just did not mesh. This is certainly anecdotal, so take it for what it’s worth…

Good article in today’s Noise and Disturber on TOB’s feelings about the future of State football.

  14. old_pcorone 11/30/2007 at 9:56 AM #

    Cheap shot!
I think TOB needs time, we all expected a 1-7 year and got a 3-5 year (ACC)
Give TOB a year or two and then everyone can complain about not having fun

I think discipline doesn;t harm any player, and wonder how much better PR could have been with discipline?
Would he commit less mistakes in the NFL?

Crap, just realized I was posted that on the wrong thread. Oops, that one should have obviously been on the N&O BD thread.

  16. newt 11/30/2007 at 10:42 AM #

    From 11/30 N&O:

Asked about DeFilippo’s remarks Thursday, the Pack coach replied: “I don’t do anything in Boston anymore. I don’t have anything to say about that. I’m at North Carolina State. Boston can answer Boston questions. Call DeFilippo.”

    I really like O’Brien.

  17. graywolf 11/30/2007 at 11:22 AM #

Now we know why TOB left……as would I given the offer at NC State.

  18. Wolf Dog 11/30/2007 at 11:53 AM #

Ah 2011! BC will be back to medicore in football, TOB will have us going to major bowls, Sisney will have won an ACC Championship by then, and life will be good!

SFN: Nobody cares about your feud with noah. Both of you knock it off.

  19. SuperStuff 11/30/2007 at 12:35 PM #

Jags inherited a loaded team. He didn’t build it up from the ashes. Should be interesting to see how BC does in a few years after he gets his recruits into school. I actually think they will be okay not because of Jags, but for the simple fact that Steve Logan is running the offense. Logan had alot to do with Bill Lewis and his success at ECU.

  20. old13 11/30/2007 at 12:42 PM #

It just occurred to me – I wonder how a Naval Academy graduate feels about coaching at a school whose fight song is an old Army tune! Now TOB’s got to find some fun in that!

  21. packgrad93 11/30/2007 at 2:12 PM #

    winning IS fun.

  22. BoKnowsNCS71 11/30/2007 at 2:46 PM #

It amazes me that teams GT with so many winning seasons fire their coach. Just like the BC folks – thinking that the grass is always greener with a “better” coach. Give them time and when they are sitting at home with lousy seasons – maybe they’ll appreciate 7-5 and 8-5. Personally, at this point i would be ecstatic about 7-5, more so for 8-5 and 9 or more wins would have me flying to any bowl anytime to back the Pack.

  23. Pack92 11/30/2007 at 3:21 PM #

^newt, that was a pure Dick Sheridan answer..but with more words!

  24. ncsu96 11/30/2007 at 3:24 PM #

I have to think DeFlippio said that for Peach Bowl, look at us we’re having fun we will travel…really! NOT!!!!
BC fans don’t travel end of story, TOB has/had nothing to with this!
DeFlippio must be scared shitless that if BC loses they will wind up in the Champs/4th place bowl. I will definitely lmao if that does indeed playout.

all that being said, Deflippio is a bigtime jerk.

    That’s what’s called — “Irony.”
