Nebraska Fires AD, Citing Lack Of Football Progress

OMAHA, Neb. — Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson was fired Monday, two days after the school’s once-mighty football team was rocked with its worst home loss in nearly a half-century.

SFN has featured Steve Pederson in some past articles for the manner in which he respects and reveres the Cornhusker athletics program. (You must check this link out!) How fascinating it is to see a University hold its Athletics Director accountable for on-the-field results…particularly in just one sport.

Note where the Nebraska administration immediately went with their first action – to the top of the house. To the man responsible for all programs and makes the decisions. Remember, decisions aren’t just made when the trigger is pulled on a coach. Theoretically, a decision is made every year that you choose to keep a coach as well. As much as we like Steve, one can’t argue that the Cornhusker program has taken another step back (in the short term) after the premature firing of Frank Solich. We said it then…and we re-emphasize the statement now — Nebraska made a huge mistake by not hiring Jim Grobe when they replaced Solich with Bill Callahan.

Here is a quick update from Ivan Maisel. Does any of this sound familiar?

For one thing, as Perlman made clear in his statement Monday, he believed that Pederson had tied his future so securely to Bill Callahan, the coach he hired four years ago, that Pederson couldn’t objectively make any changes.

I guess he didn’t live up to the standards he laid out – http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2006/08/19/best-statement-ever-nebraska-ad/

Nor did he wind up being as fantastic as SFN was opined. Although maybe now we can say they have a fantastic president/chancellor, for firing an AD for royally screwing up, unlike ‘Bama, UNC, and State.

They have a couple of things that NC State doesn’t have — standards and big testicles.

Pederson’s ultimate termination does NOTHING to diminish the manner in which he chose to deal with situations with the fan base and the media in the past. It does speak to his decision making ability on coaches…which, I don’t believe that SFN opined much on. It’s not his fault that he is at a school that actually thinks highly of themselves and holds their leaders accountable.

Solich, ironically, went to Ohio U. to replace the guy who replaced Grobe.

Other than a rather odd incident involving him getting slipped a mickey at an Athens bar and falling asleep in his car, he’s done well there.

Someone once told me that each county in Nebraska provide a football scholarship allowing the university to use there money on recruits from outside the State. Of course, any kid from Nebraska and is good enough would go to Nebraska on the county scholarship. What an advantage to be the only school.

    “particularly in just one sport”

They have other sports at Nebraska?

RT29…look for UNX AD Baddour to take an early retirement
just like Moeser (both despised by the UNX understructure).
hey, i live in the Triangle and i hear things.

They made a big mistake after they fired Solich at the end of a 9-3 season. It blew my mind at the time and it still does….

  8. BoKnowsNCS71 10/15/2007 at 6:50 PM #

Unfortunately, they won’t come a knockin at our door.

  9. RabidWolf 10/15/2007 at 6:56 PM #

Agreed, gumbydammit, why the hell would you let a coach go after 9-3???
Because he didn’t win it all—that can be filed under “What were you thinking?” Maybe the AD was dyslexic and thought it was really 3-9.

Next stupid mistake made by a major NC2A university—Amato as HC of FSU.

Lack of progress would actually be an improvement for our football program under Lee Fowler. Lee Fowler gets a contract extension for taking our programs into death spirals.

It sounds like he tied his success to Callaghan. Bad move. And what awful timing, honoring a championship team and having them get absolutely worked for the second consecutive.

*chalk up yet another example of the WC Offense not working out in college football.

*What do you think the likelihood Callaghan stays after this year?

*Will the Huskers make another play at Grobe? I know he supposedly turned them down once, but you’ve got to think he’ll have some major offers. He can’t rely on our conference opponents turning the ball over like Pillsbury every week and forever.

Can we get Pederson here? (wishing, wishing)

  14. packpigskinfan23 10/15/2007 at 9:46 PM #

maybe we can make a trade… Fowler for Pederson.

wait… I forgot. CX is the only sport we have won any ACC matches in all year, right?! who actually thinks Fowler HAS done a good job!?!?! We may not have an ACC win in ANY sport till BB season guys. sad. really, really sad.

  15. choppack1 10/15/2007 at 10:37 PM #

I don’t want Pederson. Would you be happy w/ Callaghan as our coach? Crap, an AD can do a lot of damage, but unless TOB and/or Sidney are total busts they can’t trump.

Lee strikes me as the typical high-ranking bureaucrat. He knows how to make the right people happy and he’s good at building stuff. All of the mortar moved looks nice on a resume for someone looking for a new AD – providing they don’t give a damn about customer service.

Personally, I don’t want a Fowler or Pederson. I want someone who wants to please the customers and makes good decisions, can keep the coaches happy and can move a little dirt.

Gets a 5 yr ext in July and gets the boot in October. Contracts don’t mean much, but we knew that. Someone apparently had to go after Saturday’s debacle and this time it was the AD. Next time it’s the coach.

  17. bTHEredterror 10/16/2007 at 12:33 AM #

I read a midseason firing to the AD to be at least a direct threat to Callahan, and it may have been tied directly to the fact that Pedersen didn’t let Callahan go. While they get a lot of credit for being positive fans on gameday, they are not noted as having the patience of Job as the mention of Solich reminds us.

Didn’t they give Osborne a lot of hell as well early on after the Dan Devine years? I seem to recall he was under some level of duresse until he won a Nat’l Championship.

  18. RickJ 10/16/2007 at 7:21 AM #

I’m pretty sure Pederson gave Callahan an extension earlier this year before the bad losses took place. I doubt this helped him any.

This is poised to be an interesting off-season for coaching changes depending upon how the rest of the season plays out. Once the chain reaction begins: Michigan, Southern Cal, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Clemson, Pittsburgh, and Ole Miss could all be looking.

If all this goes down, you’d almost have to think LSU, Wake, Rutgers, UNC, and South Florida would have to find new coaches.

  20. Wulfpack 10/16/2007 at 7:56 AM #

I don’t think Fulmer is going anywhere. They are back in the top-25 and seem to have righted the ship. And where do you think Pete Carroll is going???

  21. LRM 10/16/2007 at 8:06 AM #

    Purely speculation.

Top 25 means nothing to Tennessee fans; Fulmer has become their Solich, their Zook.

And I’d have to think with the potential problems bearing down on USC, Carroll won’t stick around should the right opportunity come along (NFL).

  22. Girlfriend in a Coma 10/16/2007 at 8:42 AM #

I don’t think football at Nebraska can fairly be characterized as “just one sport.”

  23. Wulfpack 10/16/2007 at 8:46 AM #

Solich and Zook never won a national championship. Fulmer is a Tennessee guy, been there for ages, and does have a lot of support. I really don’t see anything happening there this year. It’s going to take a complete meltdown.

What problems are going on at USC? From what I have heard, this is his dream job and he has no interest in returning to the NFL. He loves the interaction with the kids, the recruiting, etc.

  24. Mr O 10/16/2007 at 8:46 AM #

I keep hoping someone will hire Jim Grobe, but I am becoming more and more convinced that his style just may not be attractive to big time programs. That is good news for Wake.
