NC State Reaches 8 Knee Surgeries

O’Brien said two knee surgeries this week will bring the team’s total to eight for this season.

“I didn’t have eight knee surgeries in the last three years (coaching) at Boston College,” (SFN Note: Welcome to NC State!) O’Brien said Wednesday.

Fullback Pat Bedics was scheduled for surgery Wednesday, and his status for the rest of the season won’t be known until today. Offensive tackle Jeraill McCuller also had knee surgery this week, O’Brien said, and is out indefinitely.

Tight end Anthony Hill, tailback Toney Baker and defensive tackle DeMario Pressley are the most prominent players who’ve had knee surgery. Pressley is back in the lineup, but Hill and Baker are out for the season.

O’Brien also is concerned that N.C. State didn’t improve between its Sept. 15 victory against Wofford and its loss Saturday to Clemson.

“We may have taken a step back,” he said. “I thought we were making progress.”

I wonder if there is any connection between this rash of knee injuries and the seemingly large change in S&C philosopies from the old regime to the new regime. I’m not really familiar enough with either regimen to form an opinion but I recall an article during the offseason about how much the S&C program was changing in terms of areas of emphasis. What is ironic is that the old BC way of doing things was geared towards reducing injuries. This is not really meant to blame the old or new staffs for the injury woes but it is an interesting coincidence.

Of course, the more likely explanation is that we are just totally cursed in all things athletics.

    Depressing.

My feeling is that we’re seeing a lot more of these type injuries lately, probably because of the sheer violence in the game now and the size of these guys.

One issue is when your muscles get so strong, the ligaments can’t handle the increased size and/or force being exerted. At least, that’s what I’ve heard to explain the overall increase in knee injuries in the last 15-20 years.

I know the pro-guys are WAY bigger then they once were – is this true of college players as well?
I recall in high school being discouraged from lifting too much – the fear that too much muscle mass would retard your bone growth. But from the looks of just the average freshman I’ve got in class, this does not seem to be the case. College use to be where you bulked up, but my impression is that a lot of guys arrive already bulked.
So, are our players arriving bigger? and is it muscle or part of the obesity epidemic?

I have a feeling it has more to do with “supplements” being used in high school, both legal and not. Additionally, I’ve read studies that suggest the increased use of growth hormones in food and dairy products is affecting the development of children. There is still much more study on this that needs to be done. However, it has been proven that rBGH does store itself and can be processed by humans.

    when it rains it pours

whatever the reason for trending increase in knee injuries, if life were fair it wouldn’t be affecting our team disproportionately (as it seems to be) — I doubt that anything is happening in our program that contributes to knee injuries more than anyone else’s.

we all know this is going to be a tough season. I’m just hoping we get it together for ECU and UNC.

i am optimistic that after a couple of years TOB will have the team in shape enough that we’ll have solid backup to step in for injured players – but we aren’t there yet.

Sounds like an outbreak of “knee-zles”

This isn’t a “trend” at other schools. It’s a trend at NC State.

My only explanation is that God indeed does hate us.

That’s one sure way to get down on one’s knees.

There are high school teams now that have linemen that on average are bigger than a lot of NFL teams average. That’s not coming from just eating a lot.

I know this is off topic, but I couldn’t resist. We all knew that Carolina was a “sleeping giant” according to various media people, but did you know that they are on the verge of being the next Dallas Cowboys (the Aikman, Irving, Smith Cowboys)? Apparently because the Cowboys lost a lot of games and then won the Super Bowl, Carolina will also go on to become as successful because they lost a lot of games this year and will continue to lose a lot of games. There aren’t too many 1-win teams out there that get that kind of publicity. Of course as a Redskins fan, Carolina already is the Cowboys. I hate them both.

On topic: Don’t forget that even one of our commitments (Mario Carter) is out for the season with a knee injury.

Wow, sounds pretty simple. I guess Duke is also going to be the next Dallas Cowboys. So exciting.

Sounds like Les Robinson and the ankle injury.

I was wondering the same thing, Par Shooter.

“We all knew that Carolina was a “sleeping giant” according to various media people, but did you know that they are on the verge of being the next Dallas Cowboys (the Aikman, Irving, Smith Cowboys)?”

Who are they going to trade Hershel Walker to?

  19. EverettBeez 09/27/2007 at 3:34 PM #

ABC has always stood for anyone but carolina or the cowboys in my book.

  20. Todd 09/27/2007 at 3:47 PM #

Does that mean UNX will have several Vikings on the team next year?

CAN WE BLAME THIS RASH OF KNEE INJURIES ON LEE FOWLER?

DAMN YOU LEE FOWLER (SHAKES FIST ANGRILY)

  22. noah 09/27/2007 at 4:44 PM #

I understand the confusion. John Bunting was constantly working the waiver wire over there.

I still don’t understand how Amato never brought in 5 star recruits, what with the solid draft position every year and all.

  24. noah 09/27/2007 at 8:29 PM #

He brought in some. Derek Morris and Demario Pressley were both five-star recruits.

Hard to bring in a WHOLE bunch. There aren’t many.

  25. MatSci94 09/27/2007 at 8:49 PM #

    off topic, but from espn.com

“A disappointing Louisville Cardinals season got a little worse Thursday when linebacker Willie Williams was dismissed from the team after being arrested Wednesday night on felony charges.”
