State Eliminated From NCAA Baseball

Charlotte SWEEPS NC State and eliminates the Wolfpack from the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Charlotte has now mustered TWO NCAA Tournament victories in the HISTORY of their baseball program — both against NC State this weekend.

You just wait til next year!!! By Coach Avent’s 12th year he will almost have had enough time to be expected to start beating powerhouses like Charlotte when it counts. He probably just needs a few more years to let the power of our recently renovated facilities to catch up with the Taj Mahals that the Charlotte’s of the world play in.

That’s it! It must be Charlotte’s superior facilities! Right? Thank God we spent all of that money on the new Doak Field after being told for years that we can’t even begin to hold our coaches accountable for performance until after they get world class facilities.

At least we beat Wofford!! Woo hoo!!

As we stated in this entry on Friday:

All seems to be status quo with Eliott Avent’s Wolfpack baseball program. Another ‘acceptable’ regular season with a middling finish in ACC play followed by nothing in the ACC Tournament or NCAA Tournament.

That kind of performance will typically get you an extension in Lee Fowler’s Athletics Department!! Oh wait…”Coach” Fowler decided not to even wait on this one and went gave Avent an extension through the 2010 season in the middle of this season.

Avent has qualified for seven NCAA Tournament appearances in his eleven years as skipper of the Wolfpack’s program. And, much like Herb Sendek on the basketball side of things…that is where Avent’s ‘success’ ends. Despite having coached 19 players who were named first-team All-ACC and having 40 players advance to play professionally, Avent has failed to win an ACC Championship or advance to a single College World Series in his 11 seasons as NC State’s baseball coach. He has advanced to but a single “Super Regional” (think Sweet 16 / Final 8 weekend in basketball).

But, hey…we made the tournament!! Perhaps we should go ahead and give him another contract extension just for being a good guy.

By the way, UNC-CH won the ACC Baseball Championship this year after playing for the National Championship last year. What a role reversal for the programs from when Avent originally took over. Thank goodness that we improved our stadium!! Imagine where we would be without all of that facility enhancement?

I don’t follow that much baseball…so, I would love to learn more about the correlation of the ‘progress’ NC State’s program over the last decade compared to the financial investment that we have made and similarly the correlation of the ‘progress’ Carolina’s program over the same time period compared to the financial investment they have made.

Unfortunately it appears we are heading no where fast in baseball while our rivals are making strides and succeeding. We fix up Doak, but still haven’t hosted and have been to one super regional. Frustrating situation.

You wonder why Avent seemed such a good hire when Tanner leftm no of course, South Carolina has one of the premier programs in the country. Jack Leggett was coaching at Western Carolina at the time and was up for a job, Clemson snatches him away. It’s obvious that no one cares about baseball at the our alma mater. I’ve always beleived that a program is only as good as its worst sport. Baseball isn’t our worst sport and yet we treat it with such disdain.

As much as I hate it we are mired in mediocrity in baseball. Thank you Todd Turner, unx grad, for allowing one of the best coaches in college baseball, an NCSU GRAD, to leave and go to South Carolina. You have to plan to be that stupid.

Go Cocks. Hopefully they will get a shot at the pansy heels and NOT lay down like Clemson last year.

It’s time for Avent to go. Just like with Herb, he’s probably done enough to stay, but at some point you have to make a change if you want to improve. 11 years is long enough to show marked improvement, and frankly it’s just not happening. Here’s hoping the people with the money will force Jed to make a change.

I am so used to this, that I am numb. I think I need to change my user to “GoodEnoughPack”…

Losing Brackman for both the ACC and NCAA tournaments was a blow. Despite his struggles this season, not having him in the rotation made this a big hill to climb. Nevertheless, we should have been able to at least get to the regional title game.

This sadly familiar performance brings up the question, “What is the definition of success for NC State athletic programs?”

Unfortunately we have seen that in our major sports, both mens and womens, success is defined as an overall winning record and steady appearances in the NCAA tournament. Strong performance (or, god forbid, a championship) in the conference tournament or the NCAA tournament is not considered a measure of success for the program.

Until this simple definition changes, we will stay where we are. Great programs do not accept mediocrity. Under the leadership of Uncle Jed, not only do we accept it, we reward it.

But all is not lost. We have seen from Sidney that he does not accept this definition, and from outward appearances, neither does TOB. As a rising tide can lift all boats, perhaps we will soon see the end of mediocrity at NC State. I really hope so.

I hated to see Tanner go – I thought he was one of the up and coming coaches and would be a long term success. Yes, Ray is a grad, but there were other circumstances more than TTurner.

The other baseball thread mentioned a non-revenue sport angle. Being a non-revenue sport, it would be very difficult to pay Tanner the kind of money he could command on the open market. Then again, maybe he could have built the team into a revenue source. He went to SC and got a raise. More than that, his wife is a SC grad and she wanted to go home. All of us men know got to keep momma happy. She went home, he got a raise, and a promotion to a better program.

I respect Ray Tanner and I worked closely with him in my time at State. He is a class man and I hope SC whips the Tar out of the Holes in the super regional. BUT, I still wish it were us advancing.

Also, someone asked about Brack in the previous thread. He is still projected as first round, but somewhere in the 20’s. Saw two different updates, one in USA Today and one on ESPN during the regionals.

Also with the elbow injury, and with Boras as an “advisor” I would be very surprised to see AB drafted in the 1st round. Pitchers with bad wings usually raise some red flags and the stock drops.

Perhaps he stays one more year then?

    BLPack…

I agree 100%. Coaches make program, they can get players in that will
win. I don’t have to win a NCAA title all the time, but at least compete
for conference crowns and break thru the regionals to the Super regionals…the CWS will be within reach if we can do that…

    Go PACK!!!

If Foulup is a manager, Rosie O’Donnell is a looker! And if he doesn’t get rid of him, I’d have to put Oblinger in the same catagory!

Wonder if the UNC C coach is available. Beat us twice in the Regionals.

  14. Pack92 06/04/2007 at 2:09 PM #

    Hey Mike,
Are you sure Ray married a USC grad? He was dating a young lady going to State when he was a graduate assistant. If she was happier in Columbia it really doesn’t matter as you pointed out. Ray got a promotion and kept momma happy. That combination is rare!

  15. Trout 06/04/2007 at 2:45 PM #

Tanner is married to a NC State graduate. She has an undergrad degree from SC and a graduate degree from NC State.

fire him!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is the exact type of average sports we have been dealing with here at nc state for years, we have made the move in basketball, football. now it is time for base ball, get some one in here that can win some games. If unc can get to the national championship, then there is no reason we can’t win on the big state as well. Thanks avent, but its time to go

    Mike

I asked about Brackman earlier, and I sincerely hate to hear that about his further slippage. Hmmm, I have to think back, I think maybe I had a similar thought that something like this might happen in a post a while back. I hate to say it again but, can a baseball injury hamper a MLB draft/career, and at the same time also possibly have eliminated the chance at a potential NBA career, all at the same time?

    Swept by Charlotte. That’s nice!

Of course, at NC State you have a coaching job for life unless you (a) lose every conference game for five seasons or more, (b) get pinched for a felony, or (c) you’re Chuck Amato and the BOT tells Fowler to get stuffed.

So look forward to more mediocrity in years ahead, while the Holes win championships. Such is life in the never-ending Periclean Age of Lee Fowler.
