2007 Basketball Recruiting Rankings & Review

Basketball recruiting for this year’s class is complete and first year Head Coach, Sidney Lowe has an awful lot of which to be proud!! Coach Lowe made the best of his opportunity to make a big impact as early as he could last summer.

After inheriting a program that was in such disarray that Lee Fowler found it necessary to sign the new coach to an (uncustomary) SIX YEAR deal last year, Sidney bested expectations on the court during his first season and has continued his momentum off the court in recruiting.

(Sidebar: After six years of listening to “Coach” Fowler extol the strength of NC State’s program under Herb Sendek, I never understood the ‘logic’ and lack of consistency that the program was in such bad shape that Fowler needed to go outside of his box and give Lowe an extra year on his first contract. Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining about the maneuver as it relates to Sidney – just flabbergasted at the hypocrisy of Fowler’s actions when measured against his words).

This year’s recruiting class started coming together when Johnny Thomas committed to the Wolfpack in early June of last year. The class kept picking up steam and then picked up momentum from there.

If you do not include point guard Farnold Degand or combo guard Marques Johnson who is transferring from Tennessee, the Wolfpack signed four players in this year’s class.

* JJ Hickson, C/PF, Scout – 5-star, #13 rank; Rivals – 5-star, #10 rank
* Tracy Smith, F, Scout – 4-star, #70 rank; Rivals – 4-star, #46 rank
* Javi Gonzalez, PG, Scout – 3-star, Top 150 rank; Rivals – 3-star, Top 150 rank
* Johnny Thomas, SF, Scout – 3-star, Top 150 rank; Rivals – 3-star, Top 150 rank

Not including the transfers, Coach Lowe’s first recruiting haul was ranked:

* 16th in the country CollegeHoopsUpdate.com. (Link to rankings)
* 16th by Scout.com (Link to rankings )
* 18th by Rivals.com (Link to rankings) (We particularly liked the Rivals article because of its format and easy access to past recruiting rankings.

The ACC Perspective
As always, the first place to turn for broad and deep analysis of the conference is Dave Glenn.

Glenn’s ACCSports.com has a detailed breakdown of both 2007 signees and a look ahead to 2008 recruits at this link.

The Fayetteville Observer highlighted the recruiting classes of the entire conference in this article that uses the Prepstars recruiting service for its basis.

Duke signed three of the top 20 basketball prospects in the Class of 2007, getting signatures from Kyle Singler, Taylor King and Nolan Smith in the fall. The only other top-20 player headed to the ACC is J.J. Hickson, who signed with N.C. State.

ACC schools are bringing in eight of the top 50 high school hoops players in the nation as ranked by prepstars.com. In addition to the three future Blue Devils, N.C. State and Florida State signed two apiece, while Georgia Tech got one.

Of the 43 high school players who signed with ACC schools, 20 are ranked in the top 100. One of those, however, Augustus Gilchrist, has said he will not attend Virginia Tech because of last month’s campus shootings.

None of Clemson’s three signees is rated in the top 100. All of the other ACC schools, with the exception of North Carolina, added at least one top-100 prospect.

Carolina did not sign anybody. In fact, the Tar Heels did not recruit anyone in the 2007 class after making the nation’s No. 1 haul last year. UNC’s 2006 group included six of the top 100 high school players.

Virginia Tech has the largest 2007 ACC class with six signees. Maryland has five.

The rankings are summarized below:

(1) Duke
(2) Georgia Tech
(3) N.C. State
(4) Florida State
(5) Virginia Tech
(6) Wake Forest
(7) Maryland
(8) Virginia
(9) Boston College
(10) Miami
(11) Clemson
(12) North Carolina

Related, Dave Sez has done a nice analysis on the talent entering the ACC this year.

NC State’s Future
We’ve been keeping a running list of the Wolfpack’s projected roster for the past year as we have been following recruiting. With the news that Tracy Smith has not only signed but is projected to academically qualify to play next season (and should be enrolling at State this summer), then it becomes more clear that someone on NC State’s current roster will not be returning to the program next season.

Early rumblings from Raleigh seem to indicate that Bartosz Lewandowski may be having some health issues that will preclude him from participating in college athletics in the future. We do not know who true this is and will be looking into it further; we will exclude Lewandowski for the purposes of the following projections. Also unknown for the purposes of the following projections is the classification of Marques Johnson next year. Will he be a freshman or a sophomore?

Senior Class
(1) Gavin Grant (2G/3F)

Junior Class
(2) Courtney Fells (2G)
(3) Ben McCauley (4F/5C)

Sophomore Class
(4) Brandon Costner (3F/4F)
(5) Trevor Ferguson (2G/PG)
(6) Dennis Horner (3F)
(7) Farnold Degand (1PG)

Freshman Class
(8) Johnny Thomas (3F)
(9) JJ Hickson (5C/4F)
(10) Tracy Smith (4F/3F)
(11) Marques Johnson (2G) (eligible after first semester)
(12) Javi Gonzalez (1PG)

HS Senior Commits
(13) Julius Mays (PG)
(1) CJ Williams (3F/2G) [Gavin Grant’s old scholarship]

More from Dave Glenn:

N.C. State is in the unusual position, even at this early stage, of having filled all of its open roster spots with commitments from members of the Class of 2008. These high school juniors won’t be in college until the 2008-09 season, remember, but Lowe already has secured pledges from Indiana guard Julius Mays and in-state (Fayetteville Jack Britt) swingman C.J. Williams. Unless a current team member leaves the program prematurely, the Wolfpack has no more available scholarships for high school juniors.

Given the nature (transfers, early NBA entries, etc.) of modern college basketball, of course, the Wolfpack is continuing to stay in contact with a variety of 2008 prospects, even without an open scholarship.

There are four incoming freshmen to go with two players who transferred in last year and will be eligible in the coming season. The four freshmen alone – center J.J. Hickson, forwards Tracy Smith and Johnny Thomas, and guard Javier Gonzalez – gave State the No. 14 class in the nation, according to PrepStars, and the No. 2 class in the ACC behind Duke. Scout.com rated the class No. 17 in the nation and No. 2 in the ACC.

I’m glad you listed Johnson as a two-guard. When we signed Gonzalez, that ought to have let everyone know how the coaches saw him.

It ought to be interesting to look back in a couple of years at Johnson, Ferguson and Lewandowski and see if we were being hasty to fill out a roster.

I don’t think you can include Degand in that group, even if it turns out he’s a total bust….our desperation for a point guard forced our hands.

  2. redfred2 05/30/2007 at 11:15 AM #

^Ferguson? Wasn’t he actually brought in by the former staff?

  3. lush 05/30/2007 at 11:22 AM #

    ^yep

Noah, good analysis and I believe you are most likely right about MJ. But isn’t it good to know that we have what should be, at the very least, a pretty capable ball handler and someone who should know something about how to get the to the right player, playing at the 2 spot on occasion, or maybe a lot. That has to help all the way around, especially for the PG.

I like to see the roster broken down by class. While this isn’t useful for looking two years down the road (like so many try to do), it is helpful to see how many scholarships are available for a given year and where the positions of need are.

Looking over the roster as it now stands, Sid has (at least) two scholarships available for the ’09 freshman class. In the unlikely event that Sid needs my advice, I would target a 4/5 for the first scholarship. For the second, I would take the best guard (PG or shooter) that I could get.

    redfred,

i am most excited about a true point gaurd for the god awful turnover problem we had last year. im hopping for much improved ball handling as well as decision making and the extra bodies should lead to less tired players and in turn less lazy passes.

sorry to hear bartosz is having health prob’s but if someones gotta go, im glad it is him…. maybe we can get T-ferg to trnasfer and open up a scholly for an 08 or 09 player…… why in the world did Pitt recruit him?… hey maybe he can transfer to ASU, and when he graduates. Herbie can hire him to take over Archies spot on the staff

I have got to get a grip and restrain myself. My eyes are glazing over and starting to twitch uncontrollably, kind of like Inspector Cluso’s boss’s, everytime I think about the options we’ll present on the BB in this upcoming season.

You know one of the three, FD, JG, or MJ later on, has to be serviceable at the PG spot. Maybe even GG is working harder at it during this off season and can take some pressure off the newcomers. Or Fells also, maybe his confidence has risen so that he is aware of the fact that he the abilities and can be a factor from practically any spot, or anywhere, on the court.

Who knows???…the coaching staff hopefully! But summer hasn’t even really started, and I am already drooling over the prospects anyway.

Scout sure isn’t showing the Kentucky class any love, don’t even have them in the top 25. It says thats as of today, but have to wonder it that really reflects the addition of Patterson.

  10. Mike 05/30/2007 at 12:27 PM #

Why do we need a PG? We can do fine without one. I think a good solution would be to put 5 wing players on the floor at once and let them see what happens. I once knew of a guy that tried that and his team made the NCAA Tourney 5 years in a row!!!

  11. newt 05/30/2007 at 12:33 PM #

The Wolfpacker articles on Javi Gonzales and Farnold Degand this month described both players as needing improved decision making and control, meaning as prospects they were both prone to making unforced mistakes.

This year’s recruiting class was admirable considering that it was Lowe’s first class after being hired late. Obviously Hickson was a huge pickup. But this class isn’t an upshot in NC State recruiting. In fact, overall, it’s probably a drop from the Fells (30), Costner (AA), McCauley (top-100) class. To be an elite program, we need to recruit more Hickson-level players, especially at guard. We have not recruited multiple players near that level since the 80s, if ever.

It’s weird receiving the ’08 committments, Mays and Williams, so early. That makes it hard to evaluate. They may be ranked higher because we have laid out scholarships, or they may be ranked lower if they fly under the radar because they are already committed.

And yes, I’m hung up on rankings because history shows that in basketball rankings are pretty good indicators of success.

“I think a good solution would be to put 5 wing players on the floor at once and let them see what happens. I once knew of a guy that tried that and his team made the NCAA Tourney 5 years in a row”

    False.

  13. packbackr04 05/30/2007 at 1:10 PM #

cedargrove^ you almost sounded like Smeagol there…. “false, we told you they would lie to you… hurt you. trixie little hobbits”

  14. Luke12321 05/30/2007 at 1:27 PM #

FWIW…Looking ahead two seasons from now…if Costner and JJ are gone (which would probably mean we have had great success!) then we are really going to need the 09 class to be special. I was thinking how we should of waited on 08 and tried to get “higher” ranked players but we got another gaurd in Mays and a sg/sf talented nc product in Williams so it gives Lowe and staff time to get in good with young 09 top talent (Karron Johnson, Howell, Noel Johnson, Hamilton).

Two seasons from now…here is what our class will look like…

    (Consdering Lew is gone)
    starting line-up
    PG- Degand SR
    SG- Johnson JR
    SF- CJ williams SO
    PF- Smith JR
    C- Horner SR
    Bench
    PG Javi JR
    SG Mays SO
    C- Lew SR
    PF- Thomas JR
    SG- Ferg SR

So we will be able to add two guys to that class….

“Also unknown for the purposes of the following projections is the classification of Marques Johnson next year. Will he be a freshman or a sophomore?”

Johnson actually played in the first four games for Tennessee this year. Absent some kind of ruling from the NCAA for an injury (I remember something about Pearl wanting him to redshirt for a back injury), he would have to be classified as a sophomore.

  16. StateFans 05/30/2007 at 1:30 PM #

    Luke,

I respectfully disagree with your projections a couple of years out.

  17. redfred2 05/30/2007 at 1:45 PM #

newt, newt, newt, don’t be such a downer.

Good comparison there though, between what should be a well established year nine class, and a late and partial FIRST recruiting season, amidst joke after joke among the national media, about the head basketball coaching position at NC State.

Maybe, just maybe, if Lowe has a full recruiting period, without having to avoid the stench and dung heap others left behind, then he’ll be able to compete with some those magnificent recruiting accomplishments from days gone by.

newt, you were saying that it’s not that impressive of a FIRST class for Lowe. Maybe they’ll be like some of the others from before and not play as expected after they arrive. Maybe, they’ll actually be BETTER than their hype.

  18. redfred2 05/30/2007 at 1:54 PM #

    reword:

Maybe, from now on, they’ll be given a fair opportunity, and actually become BETTER than their hype.

Mike^ or we could take our one true center out from under the basket and let him roam around the free throw line. totally taking him out of position for his shot range, rebounding abilities, and then we will give him added dribbling responsibilites. that works well too. Just ask Cedric Simmons

    Wrong!!!11!!!!1!!

  21. redfred2 05/30/2007 at 2:07 PM #

Cedric will be good in a few more years, he just needs to catch up on some practice at the position. That’s the center position, not the undesignated all encom’passing’ top of the key, fish out of water, can’t rid of the ball fast enough to suit myself, what the hell am I doing out here, position.

  22. wufpack 05/30/2007 at 2:10 PM #

As concerned as most people are about PG, SG is actually more of a concern at this point. And THAT is why I don’t consider Johnson a questionable decision at all. He is a guy who was a top-60 or 70 combo guard that Harris liked when we recruited him originally. When he came on the market, there was precious little left in the class of ’07, and we still had issues with finding a) a PG, and b) depth at SG. I realize the issue that he hadn’t earned a lot of PT before his injury at Tennessee, but he had been there for, what, 2 months? Harris recruited him for longer than that and liked him. And he’s a guy that likely fills TWO needs (backup PG AND backup SG), with the potential of being much more than a backup eventually. I really like Fells at the 2, but without Johnson our depth at that position would consist of Ferguson (probably not an ACC-caliber player) and Grant (not a good enough shooter or quick enough on defense to play the 2). If we had purely been looking for a starting PG, then yes Johnson might have been a questionable pickup. But we weren’t, we needed depth at both positions and Johnson can provide that.

  23. redfred2 05/30/2007 at 2:11 PM #

Thanks for the heads up 04. I think maybe glove enjoys that more than he does picking on ol’ Cedar.

“the center position, not the undesignated all encom’passing’ top of the key, fish out of water, can’t rid of the ball fast enough to suit myself, what the hell am I doing out here, position.”

Please refer to it by its proper name “world’s greatest offense”

that’s not out of Ced’s range.
