Just a quick hit from one of the best blogs around: (Note: this is a week old, but still relevant).

I am not going to make a huge deal of something this small…because we have talked about the topic a lot since TOB accepted the NC State job and publicly commented on all of the factors that make State’s job so attractive.

But, when I read this quick tidbit I couldn’t help but shake my head a little at the stark difference in the Boston College job compared with other jobs. While local and regional media – not to mention the host of NC State internet media – were covering NC State’s spring football practice with almost daily frequency, I share with you the following:

There was nothing in the papers and nothing on bceagles.com about the first scrimmage on Saturday.

I guess this is simple supply and demand at work. Why should the media cover something that so few people demand? Take for instance the following comparison provided by our readers:

Did you know that NC State’s SPRING GAME drew more fans than one of Boston College’s home football games this year? No shit. 14,682 fans showed up for BC’s game with Buffalo this year.
BC entered the game ranked with a 6-1 record and ranked in the Top 25. (Not that it really matters…but, it was a mild 55 degrees and raining)

Could you imagine the attendance in Carter-Finley if NC State was ranked in the Top 25 and had a guaranteed win coming to town that was going to advance our record to 7-1 and position us for a potential run at a top-flight bowl?

While we are on the topic of BC, NC State’s 2nd opponent of the 2007 football season, it looks like the new coach’s transition has not necessarily been the smoothest in the text book. (Link). EagleinAtlanta has some thoughts on the situation.

    Hmm…It will be interesting to see what happens at BC. I suspect this year – and even some of next year things will be all right. When a good manager leaves, problems aren’t usually evident the first 2 years. However, the chickens usually come home to roost in the 3rd and 4th years.

    It should be really disconcerting to BC fans that before the first official snap a coach and some key administrators have left. Heck, Amato didn’t really experience any attrition from his staff until year 2.

    Regarding the spring game, I believe Trout posted something pretty funny. Our spring game outdrew BC’s regular season game (a one loss BC team) vs. Buffalo. Granted, Buffalo is a crappy opponent, but you’ve only got 5-7 home football games a year. Obviously, the good folks in Chestnut don’t give a crap about football.

    i just read that BC has lost 3 of its new coaches/ athletic dept people since jags was hired. and it sounds like their OL has more holes in it than a block of swiss cheese. Their OL coach was an alumi of BC and quit cause they are so bad. he cleaned out his desk last week…. i Hope steve logan knew what he was in for up there.

    I’m not sure that Steve Logan isn’t the cause of a departure or two. Logan was not known as the easiest guy to work for, and he has a particularly gruff manner that doesn’t go over well with everyone.

    ^I’ve never been a big Steve Logan fan. He’ll make the average lunatic fringe-type fan happy by throwing deep on third and long and going for it on fourth down, but he takes stupid risks that hurt his teams in the long run. I’ll take TOB and Dana Bible’s conservative offense, high third down percentages, and low turnover rates any day.

    packbackr – I think he was. However, staff chemistry is an interesting dynamic. If Logan didn’t hire the guy – and Logan is installing a different blocking scheme, things could get dicey in a hurry.

    Logan was the alpha dog at ECU, but before that he was an assistant for a while. He’s had a wide wrange of experience since he was a college assistant – and more HC experience than BC’s current coach. This could have been a proactive shove out of the door. It could have been as simple as Logan going, “Coach Jags, this guy just doesn’t have the experience or desire o leverage the blocking schemes that I want to run. If you want this offense to go anywhere, he needs to take a hike.”

    When I read how the offensive line coach was leaving, my gut feeling was that it was a clash of egos between he and Steve Logan’s. Guys jsut don’t go pack their office up and walk out on their own with no job unless someone ticked them off royally. The blame could go both ways. It can be a difficult adjustment to work for any new boss — especially after Dana Bible. Then again, as much as I like listening to Steve Logan, he may need to tone down the cocksure part of his personality and work with other people.

    Should also be interesting to watch and see if the media up there — who seem to be ignoring BC most of the time — all of the suffen get interested now that there might be some controversy. IF they also start losing games, the boo birds in the press will have a field day and call for heads. Of course, the good side will be more media attention to the BC FB team.

    That Buffalo attendance is absolutely pathetic. Wisconsin put 80,500 in the stands for a game against Buffalo November 18 (friggin’ cold!), with the Big 10 season over and it’s bowl berth pretty much locked up.

    If fans aren’t showing up for a game because of the calibur of opponent, that says a lot about the calibur of your program itself. Perhaps they stayed away because it would be unbearable to watch their team lose to Buffalo, and they knew there was a good chance of that happening.

    The excuse for the attendance at the Buffalo game I heard was the weather. If it was only 55 degrees and rain keeping people away, then that’s piss poor.

    SFN must be hitting the big time if it’s getting attached by the MSM.

    Ovies said State and UNC fans shouldn’t be dickering over attendance for a spring game; neither one had anything to really be proud of compared to Bama; who put 92k in the stands for their spring game. Pretty standard stuff from a radio host to get some people riled up. It looks like it worked.

    why WOULDNT bama have that many people at their Spring game… look at all the media they got from their coaching mess that turned out GREAT for them… its also the SEC and a huge football school. NCState had a good turnout concidering our football past. UNC had a predictable yet still funny turnout… concidering their new hire.

    Yep – Ovies is a clown…You know he could choose to get people fired up by actually taking a valid position or a position relative to the state he works in.

    I do think it’s news that NC State’s spring game attendance DOUBLED UNC-Ch – but you won’t read about it. It’s certainly not in ‘Bama territory, but it does demonstrate on enthusiasm for the game and perhaps an evolving dynamic.

    We may never compete w/ the attendance for Spring games at the big time programs – but the 15K plus I saw in Raleigh was the most impressive ever and it shouldn’t be mocked.

    I don’t know if I’d call him a clown. Usually he’s entertaining and sincere. This time, he took the easy road.
