Dave Glenn Pencils Pack in at the 4 Slot

I started to feel like my cautious optimism is at least warranted, when I read that Dave Glenn is drinking Sid’s Kool Aid:

If Atsur had another year, this team would have had an incredibly high ceiling. As it is, the key factor moving forward for the Wolfpack will be the development of a reliable point guard or two from among Degand, Gonzalez and Johnson. (Any of the three could end up as the starter.) Considering the talent — and, for a change, some quality depth — available at other positions, State will compete for the ACC title if that one, huge question can be answered in a satisfactory manner.

Needless to say, this would be a fantastic result. I’m still hoping GT suffers some personnel losses, and even if not – Paul Hewitt doesn’t have a great regular season track record (especially when expectations are high). It also looks like Dave’s analysis does not assume that the Degand/Javi combo will produce “league average” PG play. Then again, nobody expected Maryland’s duo to provide that this past season, either. I think Terp-level PG play is a realistic hope, but we shall see. Dave’s next tier of predictions is posted here.

Lastly, to continue my crusade of sorts (and good-natured sparring with fellow SFN blogger Rick and several respected commenters), please note that Dave does have JJ Hickson starting…

Hmmmm… didn’t Dave Glenn post this about a week ago? Anyway, when you see what he has penciled as Duke’s starting lineup, especially if they don’t get Patterson, it’s much easier to see us as at least No. 3. Without Patterson Duke wouldn’t be competitive against a team that plays inside at all. The only inside guy they have coming back is the Z-man, not to be confused with the G-man (the Z-man probably can figure out the team in the red is not “North Carolina.”). We know the Pack can play with UNC, we didn’t so well with GaTech in our one matchup, but with better guard play this year, that can change. As Dave said, if we get point guard play, we can do very well in the ACC.

As for GT, I’ve seen Hewitt mentioned for the Michigan job. Seemed kind of odd, but that would change their prospects depending on any system changes that might occur.

Some of the awe factor is gone from Duke after this year. They will have a tougher time than they’ve had in the recent past, even if they do have comparable talent to their better teams.

I agree Tex. On a totally different subject … I usually can follow Bob Lee Swagger’s columns but can anyone tell me what the hell he’s talking about in his newest? See http://www.bobleesays.com. For a UNC fan he’s sometimes fairly unbiased in his sports opinions and somewhat humorous but his newest rant is all over the place. Please ‘splain to this slow on the draw kind of guy. 😉

Read Tysiac’s comments in today’s Charlotte Observer. Seems like he’s trying to give HWSNBN credit for the training he gave the Ohio State coaches when they were assistants with him. Hmmm, seems like they learned how to use Oden a little differently than HWSNBN would have!

Marky Mark’s character from the new movie Shooter is named Bob Lee Swagger. He’s nuttier than squirrel sh*t.

Don’t mean to abuse the reply system, but thought that this is a great that everyone should see:

Off topic, but this is too good not to make fun of it. Carolina’s fans are OFFICIALLY the most delusional in sports. From the N&O’s letters this morning, talking about the Carolina-Georgetown game:

The game was rigged. Carolina completely changed how it played in the last 10 minutes — ridiculous shots, no defense, etc. — a losing strategy.

Did the NBA tell Roy Williams his players needed more seasoning before going to there? Winning the championship would have made this more difficult.

Holy crap! Someone really believes that? Either he’s the biggest moron in the Triangle or this is quite the scandal and ought to be investigated immediately. The NBA in cahoots with Roy Williams so he can win next year’s title instead of this year’s. Wow. Stop the presses.

We are not in search of much scoring from Degand, Javy, and MJ (come second semester). But we do need them to make plays with out alot of live ball TO’s. McCauley and Costner handle the ball alot in our offense, and they will turn the ball over on occasion as a result. They tend to be the dead ball types (traveling, charge, dribble of a foot) that are not a compounding TO. You are already losing a possesion without a good shot attempt, live ball TO’s compund the problem by giving the opponent numbers in the transition game. If next years PG’s can create some plays without these live TO’s, then Sid’s offense and the returning players should score enough to win more games.

Offensive rebounding has to become a point of emphasis. As a team if we did not shoot some where about 55% or better, then chances are we were doomed. If we can’t rebound our misses better then the games where we a just not hitting our open shots are going to turn into losses again. I look for Hickson and Horner to be guys who can crash the boards with conviction next year, but they need some help. As much as it pains me to say, I thought GG helped the offense under Herb in this regard much better then he was utilized by Coach Lowe. His agressive play is perfect for an offensive rebounder. He needs the ball in his hands less, not becuase of the TO’s he is prone to make, but because he was occupied by ball handling to much to be freed up to attack loose balls and rebounds. Obviously personel options, especially when Atsur was out, dictated his role most of the year. Hopefully with depth at the guard slots with adequate ball handling skills to aid Fells, maybe we can truly see GG play his natural position (around the paint, attacking the glass)

If we get consistent guard play we could finish fourth. That is probably expecting too much of freshmen and sophomore transfers. I think sixth is a reasonable expectation. But Sidney Lowe has already demonstrated that he can exceed expectations with just a little baling twine and duct tape.

to see us below 4th place would be let down and if we can cut down on to;s and get more rebounds and stop guards from going inside so our bigs can rebound that is what we need to work on the most with degrand i hope he can help there we won over doke and tarholes have some faith in sid and the guys they will get it done

  13. Rick 04/02/2007 at 7:45 AM #

I think we need “Md level guard play” to get to 4th place but I think this is a very reasonable expectation.

As fopr Hickson, I hope he does start. It would mean he is so good he is taking the place of a proven veteran. I just do not think it will happen but I have been wrong before (see Sendek, Herb)…

Oh wait I was right about that.

I don’t know how anyone can put the PACK at number 4 without ever seeing the POINT GUARD play in a college game? I hate it when crap like this comes out prematurely, especially for the coaching staff, because it based purely on speculation and it sets the stage for disappointment, based on nothing. I’ll reserve any judgements or expectations until after I’ve actually seen all of the parts on the basketball court.

  15. brickman 04/02/2007 at 12:12 PM #

if i was that negative i would stay home and not even go to games .if pg play is that bad then we will be middle of pack in acc . but with the way i see sid coach gives me something to look forward to next year . i worry more about def. than off. what team is going to stop ben jj or costner on off. not many i bet you .

  16. redfred2 04/03/2007 at 9:37 AM #

    It’s caution brickman, not negativity.

Apparently you weren’t around when the FB team beat BC and FSU in the early conference schedule last season.

All of a sudden, in the minds of many, right after an abysmal early OOC showing, the Pack was an ACC title contender, in the hunt for a big BCS game, and possibly a national championship. One total extreme to the other, and over the course of two short weeks time.

So what I’m saying is, all that it takes is a little encouragement and these fans will set their sights higher, and higher, and start EXPECTING things long before they’ve ever had time to develop. For me, it takes all of the fun out of watching the individual kids, and the team as a whole, as they develop over the course of any season.

  17. brickman 04/03/2007 at 12:24 PM #

we are paying this coachs big bucks . that comes with the job . and we as fans buy tickets and go to games to expect a shot at beating every team we play. i had enough of just above average bball the last ten years . and glad we made a change in fball and bball .i go to all games in fball and bball. all of us fans should set are sights higher and higher to we reach the top if not why even bother.
