What Player Rotation Do You Want/Expect Next Year?

I’m done feeling sad/angry about the season being over. It’s time to look forward. Here’s what I envision for next year:

Starters: Javi/Degand (PG), Fells (SG), Costner (SF), McCauley (PF), Hickson (C)

First wave of reserves: Degand/Javi (PG), Horner (SG/SF), Grant (SF)

Second wave of reserves: Johnson (SG), Smith (SF/PF) or Thomas (SF)

Thoughts/Analysis:

– PG will be a true job battle. I ultimately expect the minutes to break down something like 25/15, and that Johnson will be the 3rd option. I have no idea which one will be better, short or long term. I do not expect to see Fells or Grant play PG except in an emergency.

– There will be a true rotation at the forward slots, with Grant (or possibly McCauley) essentially serving as the “sixth starter.” With 4 “starters” for 3 positions, that’s approximately 30 minutes per man, subject to adjustment for foul, health, and/or performance issues. Hickson will be the key to establishing a rebounding presence, and I don’t see any way he doesn’t start. Costner will be a legitimate conference POY candidate, and he will also start. McCauley might be better suited to bringing energy off the bench than Grant, if Grant as “sixth starter” doesn’t work out well.

– I am very hopeful that Horner has enough quickness to play at least a chunk of minutes at the 2. I think his handle is already good enough, and he is very smart with the basketball. Especially if Smith qualifies, this would be a much better opportunity for him than serving as the 5th or 6th forward. He could create hellish matchups as a 6’7″+ shooting guard. If this does pan out, then Fells had better work much harder and play much more consistently – or he will lose his starting slot.

– I alluded to it above – Smith’s qualifying is a major X factor. I think he could be an immediate presence on the glass, and really allow Sid to attack opposing frontcourts with waves of big, strong, skilled forwards. I would rather not have to count on Thomas fitting into the rotation right away – it would be better if he had to force himself into the mix with great play and practice work.

– From what I have been told, Johnson will be more of a 2 than a 1, although he could steal minutes at PG better than Fells or Grant. I could see him developing into a quasi-Ginyard role, where he is assigned to lock down the opponent’s best scoring guard.

– The best news – We will have at least a solid 8-man rotation. We could play as many as 11, if Smith qualifies, Johnson is in playing shape, and Thomas progresses quickly.

Grant will start at the 3 no doubt. Only senior. Costner isn’t quick enough to guard the other team’s 3.

Horner isn’t quick enough for the 2.

    Javi/Degand
    Fells
    Grant
    Costner
    JJ/Ben

I see JJ, Ben & Brandon splitting up most of the 4/5 min. Horner a few.
Johnson and/or Ferg backing up Fells.
Fells can slide to the 3 to give Grant some rest. Doubt Thomas will be ready.

We all assume JJ starts, which is probably true, and a newcomer will take over at PG. That means one of the four returning starters assumes the sixth man role. I think it will be Fells instead of Grant, mostly because of defensive issues, so I’m going with this starting lineup:

    Degand
    Grant
    Costner
    Ben
    Hickson

That is a very big lineup and will cause some matchup problems for the other team. Though I admit their aren’t a lot of long range shooters there on offense.

That’s why Fells will be the first off the bench, followed by Javi, Horner, and then Smith. I think those nine will get lots of early minutes, and Johnson and Thomas will have to earn their playing time in practice.

I’m giving Degand the nod at PG since he’ll have a year of practice under his belt. But if Javi proves himself it wouldn’t surprise me to see him starting at some point. I agree that Johnson is likely third on the PG rotation.

I think we will have one of the best front courts in the league if not the country. I see a three man rotation of BC, the Undertaker and JJ. Alot of skill and power there. Will be hard to guard. Only two of the three start though.
Grant at the three with Horner backing him up.
I see another three man rotation at guard with Fells, Javi and Degand (or maybe Johnson). This is all conjecture as I have not seen Javi, Degand or Johnson play.

I think we will be an inside out team next year which is what I like.
We will have alot of options and can give many different looks.

With all the new faces, I expect for the starting lineup at the beginning of the season to look different from the lineup at the end of the season. While I think we may play 10-11 at the beginning, I hope we tighten to an 8 (max 9) rotation by season’s end, with (in no order) McCauley, Costner, Grant, Fells, Horner, Hickson, Degand/Javi, getting the bulk of the minutes.

Starters (start of season): Degand (PG), Fells (SG), Grant (SF), Costner (SF), McCauley (PF), with Hickson (C) getting significant minutes and probably causing a lineup shift by season’s end. I wouldn’t really call him a reserve, rather a 6th man.

First wave of reserves: Horner (SF), Javi (PG)

Second wave of reserves: Johnson (SG), Smith (SF/PF) or Thomas (SF)

This is really a lot of talent–more than I can remember (30 years old).

We will be stacked next year!

    1st Semester Rotation:

    1: Farnold Degand (20 min)
    ….Javier Gonzalez (20 min)
    2: Courtney Fells (30 min)
    ….Farnold Degand (10 min)
    3: Gavin Grant (30 min)
    ….Dennis Horner (10 min)
    4: Brandon Costner (30 min)
    ….Ben McCauley (10 min)
    5: Ben McCauley (20 min)
    ….JJ Hickson (20 min)

    2nd Semester Rotation:

    1: Farnold Degand (30 min)
    ….Javier Gonzalez (10 min)
    2: Courtney Fells (30 min)
    ….Marques Johnson (10 min)
    3: Gavin Grant (30 min)
    ….Dennis Horner (10 min)
    4: Brandon Costner (30 min)
    ….Ben McCauley (10 min)
    5: JJ Hickson (25 min)
    ….Ben McCauley (15 min)

Lowe said he wants the starters to average about 30 min in an 8/9 man rotation. Thomas and Smith would likely be our immediate backups, getting minutes due to foul trouble, injuries, big leads, etc.

  6. Rick 03/21/2007 at 4:00 PM #

Lowe has said he likes an 8, possibly nine, man rotation.
He also said he wants to carry 4 point guards.

  7. Mr O 03/21/2007 at 4:02 PM #

I can’t see Hickson starting over Grant or McCauley. There is just no way a freshman is going to start over very experienced Sr and Jr.

  8. wallacepark 03/21/2007 at 4:05 PM #

I tend to agree that Hickson would not start over McCauley 1st semester, but as he progresses, if Hickson is worthy of 20+ minutes he will start. This is because Hickson is a 5 and an athletic shot blocker. He will not split time at the 4/5 like McCauley. Therefore if he gets 20+ minutes, he starts. If he gets less than 20 min, he comes of the bench.

  9. BJD95 03/21/2007 at 4:07 PM #

Our rebounding is HIGHLY suspect. Hickson addresses that, and helps set the tone. I think he MUST start.

A guy that’s talked about as a likely “one and done” player (or “two and done” if we are lucky) is not the kind of talent that doesn’t start on a middle-tier ACC team.

If Grant improves his handle, I could see him starting at the 2. Although it might be hard for him to guard the opposing 2, and this would be especially tough against 3-guard lineups.

  10. BJD95 03/21/2007 at 4:09 PM #

I like a 9-man rotation b/c it means you have a full complement of 8 ready to go if and when somebody gets sick or injured. You can always tighten the rotation a bit at tourney time (see Williams, Roy).

  11. zahadum 03/21/2007 at 4:10 PM #

Yep, lots of possible options to work with. And one of the best things will be the impact on practice. For just one example, think about McCauley. The only one available to really match up against him this year was Costner, and you gotta know its hard to go from practicing against that to playing against a McBob, Hansbrough, etc. So he and Hickson should really be mutually beneficial to each other in that way.

Guess I see it like most here. At 4 & 5, three man rotation of Hickson, McCauley & Costner. Whichever 2 play best, start the next game. (just don’t see Costner quick enough to play 3, but would welcome his proving me wrong.)

At the 3, Grant and Horner. Again, whoever has the best game starts the next.

At 2, Fells most of the time, Johnson the rest. Don’t see many minutes for Ferguson.

At PG, Javi/Degand roughly fifty-fifty by year’s end. Both in at the same time when we want to go quick.

Smith of course is the wildcard right now. If he qualifies and is as advertised, could see him getting 10-15 a game at PF.

  12. redfred2 03/21/2007 at 4:10 PM #

Well, I don’t see many other options then to start Fells early on, but I’d love to see someone rattling his cage all through the early practices and lighting a fire under his butt. There is no reason for a 2 not to be going inside and at least drawing some attention from the bigs, or drawing fouls anyway.

    Degand…Javi…Later Johnson
    Fells…Horner/Grant…Later Johnson
    McCauley…Grant
    Costner
    Hickson

BTW, it will be good to have a Johnson of our own.

  13. Dan 03/21/2007 at 4:11 PM #

This is really tough. Cedar is dead on regarding Brandon guarding the other team’s wing. Then again, that’s what Brandon has to learn to do if he wants to play in the NBA, and there is no time like the present to start.

    What I want?

    PG – Javi
    SG – Grant
    SF – Costner
    PF – McCauley
    C – Hickson

That is a team that owns the paint and can dominate the glass. You can rotate Grant and Costner all day long for the right matchup. Costner can shoot and Grant can post up a lot of 2’s in this league.

Fells is basically a 6th starter. In fact, given the opposition, I think the starting lineup will change depending on defensive assignments and how Sid wants to attack the defense.

I can see Fells, Grant, and McCauley replacing each other on a regular basis. I think Courtney Fells’ position is the most tenous. Then again, he might have the most upside of the bunch.

I dont see Dennis playing the 2 unless we go zone defense during those stretches. No way he matches up with guys like Ellington on defense. Then again, he can get quicker, and lately he’s shown he can crash the boards from the perimeter.

I know its a popular thing to Gavin Grant bash, but I like that kid. I’m not going to argue the turnover issue. That is impossible. Of course he turned the ball over, but he was key for us in a lot of games this year. He was our 2nd most consistent scorer. He was third in rebounds. 2nd in assists. And before Costner went nuts, Gavin Grant was the only guy that really wanted the ball in crucial moments. That, and he is a good defender who take the opposing 2 or 3. Gavin Grant is your team captain next year. I’m glad because the kid is tough, and along with Fells brings some badly needed athleticism to this team. Maybe he takes a reduced role in the offense, maybe not, but I expect him to be the tone setter on defense. He’s a starter on this team.

I’m not even going to try to predict the order of reserves. Too much youth. That will work itself by mid February I would guess.

I have one question though. I’m glad Marques is tranferring here, but who in the hell told him he would step right in and play? He is leaving UT because he lost out to Ramar Smith at point. We have two other guys he has to compete against here at point. Let alone the log jam at 2.

And how nice is it going to be to have a potential shot blocker next year?

  14. wallacepark 03/21/2007 at 4:13 PM #

Oh, and Costner will NOT play the 3! Lowe wants a guard oriented offense with quick athletic wings who can get up and down the court and run the fast break. Gavin can pull it off. Horner is a stretch. Costner could do it if he seriously transformed his body, but that is just a pipe dream.

  15. statered 03/21/2007 at 4:15 PM #

Who starts will be determined by our opponent’s players and the matchups. No way Costner plays the 3 against a “guardish” 3 on an opposing team, especially if that guy is a good perimeter scorer as many are. On the other hand if the opponenet’s 3 is more of a defensive starter Costner may get time to provide us with a match up advantage in the post on this player.

I tend to think we will see multiple starting line ups given Sid’s desire to play the match up game with his sets.

It all looks good but the point. Not sure about Degand or Johnson and not many frosh PG’s are ready until late in the first season, so that looks to be our sore spot.

  17. Mr O 03/21/2007 at 4:21 PM #

Hickson will have to be a very, very good player immediately to put two guys with all-ACC potential on the bench. I just don’t see how there is any way that Costner, McCauley, Fells and Grant don’t start next year. They are too good and too experienced not to start IMO. Of course, I have also been wrong a million times.

  18. redfred2 03/21/2007 at 4:22 PM #

“Gavin Grant was the only guy that really wanted the ball in crucial moments.”

He may have a bad play, or many, be frustrating as hell at times, but he goes right back down the court and isn’t afraid to try to do something positive. I like him for that and I would actually start him in front of Fells at the 2 spot if pounding it inside is the focus.

  19. Mr O 03/21/2007 at 4:23 PM #

I thought Fells got much, much better at running the point during the latter part of the season. In fact, Fells improved in every facet of the game this year especially in cutting down on stupid mistakes.

  20. ncsubch2000 03/21/2007 at 4:23 PM #

Is there a precedent of ACC teams switching the lineup to adapt to or take advantage of the opposition? I think with our players we could do that. Of course, it MIGHT hurt team chemistry, I don’t know.

  21. RedTerror29 03/21/2007 at 4:25 PM #

I think Sid will take any good opportunity to have Costner, McCauley, and Hickson on the court at the same time. There’s too much talent there not to if Costner can handle the other team’s 3 on D. McCauley will get plenty of minutes over Hickson early in the season, but that will change as Hickson progresses and the level of competition rises. McCauley is an overachiever who started to struggle late in the season when against better players. And he’s not going to be stealing too many minutes from Costner. I continue to hold out hope that Fells will play to his potential.

  22. scpackman 03/21/2007 at 4:32 PM #

    starters:
    1-javi
    2-grant
    3-costner
    4-mccauley
    5-hickson

Grant is better than Fells, senior mentality will start to kick in and we’ll get smarter play from him

    subs:
    1-degand/johnson
    2-fells
    3-horner/thomas
    4-smith
    5-lew

  23. RedTerror29 03/21/2007 at 4:38 PM #

Grant and Fells need to spend all summer together. Some of Grant’s confidence needs to rub off on Fells and some of Fells lack of confidence needs to rub off on Grant (in a positive sort of way).

  24. GAWolf 03/21/2007 at 4:41 PM #

I agree that Fells improved as the year went on, but Fells also seemed to lose confidence as the year progressed. His shot wasn’t “there” in the latter part of the year… or maybe you statistics guys can prove that wrong too.

I NEED TO EMAIL STATE FANS NATION AGAIN…. CAN YOU GIVE ME THE CONTACT INFO PLEASE?

  25. scpackman 03/21/2007 at 4:43 PM #

I knew I forgot someone…Ferguson at the 1-2 also…probably will be forgotten in next year’s rotation as well.

Not expecting Lew to see much time…will probably play 2 forwards similar to this year and rotate the 3 big guys (Costner, Ben, JJ) with Costner getting the lion’s share of the minutes. Smith and Thomas won’t see that much time. In order of minutes I predict.

    1-Costner
    2-Grant
    3-Ben
    4-JJ
    5-Javi
    6-Degand
    7-Fells
    8-Horner
    9-Johnson
    10-Smith
    11-Thomas
    12-Ferguson
    13-Harris
    14-Lew
