N&O: Lowe gets scare, vows to change

Lowe, 47, was treated for dehydration, kept overnight and released Thursday morning. He said he left the hospital determined to take better care of himself — and to heed the words of UNC coach Roy Williams, who visited him in his hospital room soon after the Tar Heels’ 83-64 victory.

“He sat down and talked to me a little bit, just about the [ACC] and coaching in this league, at this level,” Lowe said. “You really have to take time out and get rest, or work out, or get away from it.

“He asked me, ‘What did you do for lunch today?’ I said I was working. He said, ‘Exactly. Take an hour and go work out, get away from it.’ He said it will wear you down. He said, ‘I know you as a player and I know you as a coach, and you’re going to work all the time.’ He was great.”

Damn you, Roy Williams! We want to be able to hate you.

In all seriousness, that really is super-classy.

I know… its hard to hate the lil guy if he does sweet things like that.

    i still hate him.

  3. redfred2 02/26/2007 at 9:49 AM #

Good guy! That is an instance where the words “class act” really do apply here on SFN.

From Roy’s postgame presser it was clear that the very first thing he did when he left the court was to go straight to a phone and call the emergency room. I’ve always been impressed with Roy Williams and hearing that just cemented my feelings about the guy. The best part… I truly believe it to be sincere concern. As if say… another Tobacco Road coach did it I would likely be skeptical of his intention.

It’s a conspiracy! Roy just doesn’t want Sid to work.

  6. packof81 02/26/2007 at 10:00 AM #

I’ve always liked Roy. He’s a great coach and nice person. That is a rare combination.

Another thing, I’m convinced that Roy was happy for Sid after we beat them in Raleigh. He walked to center court and smiled at Sid. It was impressive. I’ve heard rumor that after that game Roy was spotted in Wilmington with his wife and was laughing and joking and having a relatively good time with both State and Carolina fans. The loss, while I’m sure was miserable, did not ruin his day. I can’t say that I’d be so classy if put in the same situation.

Nice move Roy. K and Prosser didn’t even send an ecard…

I have to say it keeps getting harder and harder to despise the baby blue ones. Even their championship team carried themselves with class (well except that one guard they had). Roy does seems like a decent guy. It is nice of him to do that.

These guys have lived these rivalries their whole lives the same as we have. Coaching is just a business.

In a way, I think Roy knows he will have his hands full with Sid and Co. on the bench over here. I think he may be encouraged about the possibilities of yet another great program to complete the triangle. I feel he knew he owned and would always own the former coach, but I think he respects the renewed rivalry and all that it can bring to both squads. Could make for some very exciting match-ups over the coming years.

Class move… helps offset some of the on-court classness that Roy’s exhibited lately… agree that it makes it hard to hate him.

  13. TampaPack 02/26/2007 at 10:19 AM #

^ Excellent point LRM. For these guys it goes back to their playing days and that makes it all the more special for all of them. Hopefully our younger & future fans can experience the renewed rivalry and all it can offer

It is almost unfair that we have to compete against a guy with Roy’s character. Glad to see him give Sidney some advice.

^”I know… its hard to hate the lil guy if he does sweet things like that.”

Luckily for us, Roy is very good at what he does, thus making it much easier to hate him. I mean, not Coach K hate, but any decent UNC coach is worthy of our hate (D’Oh – just pity).

The Big Four coaches have had pretty good off-the-court relationships, from what I understand, going back to the Case-McGuire-Mckinney era. Glad to see this is continuing.

  17. noah 02/26/2007 at 11:09 AM #

I write Roy Williams a note every year and send it to the Carolina athletic office telling him what a nice guy he is and how important it is that he quit wasting his talents in basketball. There’s important work to be done with the AIDS orphans in the Yingzhou District in China.

I make sure to include a picture of these little kids that no one will hug out of fear that they’ll contract the disease.

Come on Roy! These kids need you!

Yeah, Smith and Sloan were very tight.

  19. packbackr04 02/26/2007 at 11:23 AM #

and everybody loved herb because they absolutely owned him on the court

  20. jamieinkorea 02/26/2007 at 11:37 AM #

Awwww… Roy really is a great guy just like every one of us. He’s a country boy who really does want to do well and be a good guy at the same time. I doubt that you’d ever see a yankee like K doing anything like that. It takes a “True Gentleman” to do something like that.

Say what you want about Roy, but ever since the whole “I don’t give a $#1t about Carolina” statement, I’ve known he was a class act.

  21. noah 02/26/2007 at 11:37 AM #

No, they liked Herb and Les Robinson because both were very likable guys, very high-character people.

Bob Wade got owned by everyone. Never heard anyone talk about what a great guy he was.

  22. legacyman 02/26/2007 at 11:43 AM #

    Noah,

Les was a likable guy…with that I will agree. Both guys had high character…with that I will agree. ‘Nuff said.

  23. redfred2 02/26/2007 at 11:45 AM #

“I doubt that you’d ever see a yankee like K doing anything like that.”

Whoa now, let’s not start throwing darts without even aiming first. K stuck by, and was a true friend to Coach V.

  24. newt 02/26/2007 at 11:51 AM #

In the post game, Roy’s reaction to Sidney’s situation was “you just get scared.” He related to Sid and wanted to talk to him.

  25. ncwolfie2000 02/26/2007 at 11:56 AM #

^ Very true Red Fred. Something often forgotten.

Even if we are competitors on the court/field, there is respect between the 3 area schools off court/field.

Roy Williams is hard to hate. Just as UNC fans find Lowe hard to hate. Just two classy people that you want to like and cheer for (unless you’re playing them)
