Virginia Tech – In Line For #1 ACCT Seed?

I hope some of you got to see an incredible basketball game tonight, as Virginia Tech beat UNC for the second time this season, 81-80 in OT (an incredible, acrobatic Wayne Ellington triple-clutch shot coming about 0.7 seconds too late). This was a huge win for the Hokies, as they now have the clearest path to the regular season championship and the #1 seed in the conference tourney.

Virginia Tech is 8-3 with 5 ACC games left – 3 at home, and only 1 game against a ranked opponent (Boston College, also at home). They also have a possible tough game at UVA, but it’s a bad matchup for the Cavs. Essentially, next Wednesday’s VT/BC game could be for the conference crown. With a victory, Virginia Tech would win all possible tiebreakers, with every conference foe having at least 3 ACC losses.

There’s plenty to like from an NC State perspective, too (beyond the obvious, simple joy of a Carolina loss). Who plays the Hokies following this emotional, draining win? NC State. What happened in the next game after VT beat UNC in January? 9-point road loss to pedestrian Florida State (who lost at home to GT tonight, the Bees’ first road victory in almost 2 years). The Hokies don’t play Duke, UNC or Wake again this regular season, and also won lower-profile games against UNC-G, Campbell, and App State, for a 7-0 mark against NC schools other than the Wolfpack.

WFU wins the ACC football championship.

VA Tech is the tops the ACC in basketball.

    WTF?

Isn’t one of the reasons people didn’t want VT in the ACC was because of a weak bball team? oh well…

It’s good to see some competition. I also like seeing Duke struggle. I feel that we are in a good position with our new coaching staff and recruiting class to take advantage of the parity in NCAA bball.

^ I like seeing UNC struggle more. Their fans are way more annoying, and anytime you can shut them up it’s awesome. Must suck losing games like tonight’s when you’re up your own ass as much as those douches are over there…

This makes me want to drive to Blacksburg and celebrate…..

….but I’ll wait until we beat them a second time.

Great game, great finish. VT sucked under Ricky Stokes, but Seth Greenberg has done a great job there. That’s a bad sign for anyone who hoped Stokes would turn ECU around. The Pirates are even worse this year than last year. Yikes.

If Zabian Dowdell is not on the First Team All-ACC at the end of the season there is something crooked going on.

This shows what experienced guards will do for you. Give us UVAs guards and we would be top ten in the country.

VPI has a great senior class with Dowdell, Gordon, Collins & Sailes. They have recruited pretty well but expect a big drop off next year. The same can be said for Boston College with Dudley & Marshall being seniors. I may be wrong but I don’t see either of these programs consistently in the top halve of the league.

Another interesting thing about VPI is that they are doing it without a true point guard other than the freshman Munson. They are the league leader in fewest turnovers and turnover margin. Dowdell & Gordon have been fantastic. Maybe this is our model with Degand, Johnson & Fells until we can find a true point.

Speaking of Sailes, I don’t remember seeing anyone look worse on critical late-game free throws before. Wonder what was going through his teammates’ minds when he got fouled. “Oh shit, Markus is shooting two.” The first one wasn’t even good enough to be a brick. It was more like a cinder block.

This reminds me of when FSU entered the league (Sam Cassell and the “whine and cheese” classic). They had a good team that was built without ACC academic standards. It will be interesting to see if VT is having a similar blip or if they will be a strong team for years to come.

    From the ESPN article…

“I did absolutely the worst job I’ve ever done in my entire life,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. “It was just one awful, awful job of coaching by me — that’s the bottom line of the whole thing.”

Seems we’ve been hearing that a couple of times this year. Well I don’t doubt he is a good coach, he’s always had pretty good players around him. Already this year a couple of times he’s been outcoached by coaches with less talented squads…

Rick – With BC – it’s as much about the flex they run – and being mentally tough. Skinner has been winning the last few years and they seem to lose someone every year, yet someone else steps up. They won’t be as good, but I wouldn’t delegate them to lower tiered status. VaTech – that’s another story.

Great game last night – the BC-FSU game was actually a very fun and intense game to watch. One thing about the Heels – it’s showing that the way to beat them is keep it close. They aren’t reacting well when the game gets tight. Also, hats off to the officials (for the most part) – they let them play at the end. Most of the offense for both teams in OT constituted of foul shots – so I’m glad they swallowed the whistle on the last couple of possessions.

I wonder how long it will be before Walmart Nation starts making noise about Roy winning the National Championship with Doherty’s kids, and can’t push it over the top with his own….

  13. roandaddy 02/14/2007 at 8:49 AM #

Did the ACC really blow it?? I thought BC and Va Tech were brought in for their football and an easy win in basketball. Now the sweethearts.. UNC and Duke are getting beat more often and WAKE wins the ACC in football. Is the end near?
(before you get too excited.. this said tongue in check)

  14. Rochester 02/14/2007 at 8:50 AM #

The confusing thing about the Heels is they seem to have their best players on the bench a lot at the end of the game. If I were Roy I wouldn’t be sitting Ty Lawson down unless he was in foul trouble. He’s doing the other team a favor when he puts Bobby Frasor in. And why is Brandon Wright on the bench so much? Gotta keep everyone happy, I guess, but maybe that’s the downside to having 13 McDonald’s All-Americans on the roster. They might all be good, but some are gooder than others.

  15. newt 02/14/2007 at 9:00 AM #

Roy did not face the competition in the Big 12 that he faces in the ACC. In the Big 12, having lots of good players was enough to eventually wear down and overcome any opponent. Carolina looks to have no purpose as a team on offense.

At VT, the paint is literally peeling off the walls of what can only be called their gym, but their fans have definitely shown up for basketball. They are a similar school to NC State, except they hate UVA for their preppy ways. It’s fun to watch them succeed, just not against us.

Notice how Roy blames himself, not his players. Although in practice, I can guarantee you it’s different. This is what? Carolina’s 4th or 5th loss? I wouldn’t bury them just yet.

^^^^They are a similar school to NC State, except they hate UVA for their preppy ways.

    And we DON’T???

Roy made a huge mistake last night going to the zone — they were up by 7, went to zone against a team with 3-4 guys who can bury it, 2 possessions (a two 3 pointers) later, VT is down by only one. I also concur about not playing his best players — not sure why a McD All-American would want to go to Carolina and sit on the bench. I think some guys want to carry a team, and some guys want to just add to it. You need both, I guess. Thank goodness Durant went to Texas!! He wants to carry his team, and he made the right decision by going to Texas, although, I’d would’ve liked to have seen him in a STATE uniform for a year! — I doubt he’ll be in a UT uniform next year!

This is further proof that Roy is truly one of Carolina’s own, for they may have lost games, but they have never, ever, in the history of their program, been beaten. If you don’t believe, drive down to your local Wal-Mart and ask the first UNC fan you run into. Its amazing, really.

I have talked to UNC fans, and they all note that their half-court offense is a train wreck. When they can’t bow teams out and get lots of transition chances, they struggle offensively. Why they don’t get Wright more involved is befuddling to me.

In some ways, it’s almost like Roy wants to prove they are so good that they can win down the stretch with Bobby Frasor and/or Wes Miller in the game. Then (especially Wes) gets burned on defense at a crucial juncture (happened last night and against us), and Tarheel fans must end up kicking their TV sets.

Now, I’m not saying UNC can’t get decent minutes from those players – just NOT in the last 4 minutes of a close game.

Billy Packer was right – it was nuts not to put Ginyard on Dowdell.

I did not mention their future.
I am simply stating how important talented and experienced guards are.

I won’t say this much but Kudos to Roy. Miles from the Sendekian “The kids didn’t execute.” One sign of a man is if he takes the blame as opposed to laying the blame elsewhere.
