To March, or not to March?

To March, or not to March?

It isn’t much of a question.

Technician ran two opposing views on the Student Wolfpack Club’s recent behavior of “marching in” to their seats in the RBC Center today.

For those of you not familiar with what I am talking about, here is a quick rundown: before the basketball games against Duke and UNC, the Student Wolfpack Club remained in the RBC Center concourse area until about five minutes before tip-off.

They then marched down to their seats, getting the crowd pumped up and being filmed by ESPN cameras the entire way.

It was initially ESPN’s idea. As part of its student spirit week, it wanted to highlight the Student Wolfpack Club because it is one of the largest student organizations of its kind, and this walk-in was an innovative way for the network to do so.

This link takes you to the supportive view on the topic and
This link takes you to the opposing view.

I saw the student’s ‘march’ for the Carolina game and thought it was kind of neat for about 2 or 3 seconds. The ‘neat’ was then replaced with some bewilderment as this act/behavior just didn’t feel right – the act of the FANS marching into a game seems to be a gross misplacement of attention. Doesn’t it?

The attention of everyone in the arena attention should be on the Wolfpack’s TEAM, not our fans. On the opponent. On the game that is about to happen. Since when did the student fans – who are all so original that they wear the same T-shirts – become so important that they merit this kind of self-promotion and attention?

I know that it sounds like I was ‘against’ the march. But, that was just my immediate reaction. I really was pretty agnostic on the idea until I read Technician‘s two editorials on the topic.

I now lean even more in opposition of this misplaced energy. In addition to the fact that it just doesn’t feel right for the cameras and the attention of the crowd to be focused on an 18 year old ag major from Pinetops mosey down stairs while waving his hands in the air, I believe that the idea should be scrapped for two other primary reasons:

(1) The students can’t chant/cheer in unison – To be fair, few NC State crowds throughout history have been able to chant in unison. NC State crowds are raucous. We are rowdy. We are fantastic at shouting insults and attacks. Back in the day, we even had crowds who were able to generate witty insults and not just “you suck”. But, our student’s just don’t/can’t generate in unison cheering.

This isn’t totally a bad thing. I don’t want to be like the Cameron dorks. But, I do wish that the cheerleaders and the crowd were smart enough to figure out some of this on their own. For example, whatever happened to picking an opposing player and yelling whenever he touches the ball? That is in unison. It requires nothing more than yelling. How tough can that be?

Even more frustrating is how we now have decades of fans that don’t seem to be able to realize that simply chanting the three syllables of N-C-State is significantly easier and more powerful than the ridiculous Nnnnnnnnn Cccccccccc Staaaaaate. NC State. For example, as ABC televised the crowd rush the court after the win over Carolina the audible noise was the hum behind a garbled mess that was supposed to be Nnnnnnnnn Cccccccccc Staaaaaate. NC State. Nobody outside of the Wolfpack family had a clue what was being said. It’s absurd that cheerleaders and fans expect 20,000 fans at basketball games and 60,000 fans at football games to be able to hold the cadence, the timing, the rhythm and achieve unison of this ‘cheer’ when a simple, booming “N-C-State” would/could rock…AND be heard by others! (More on this topic in future entries)

First off, it didn’t work. The club’s chants fell flat, and the march down the RBC Center stairs was awkward if anything. Sophomore Daniel Winders watched the walk-in at the UNC game from his end zone seat.

“It looked like they were just filing down into their seats. They stopped chanting after 15 seconds,” Winders said. “The walk-in just wasn’t the big triumphant entrance it was supposed to be.”

(2) Who is creating a tough atmosphere for the opposing team during warm-ups if the students aren’t in their seats? Seriously, it is like we are trying to make the visit by our opponents as enjoyable as possibe. How can our fans be none as rowdy if our fans aren’t even in their seats during the best time to be heard and get into an opposing player’s head.

Another drawback to the walk-in, besides the fact that it turned out so lame, is that it takes some of the most passionate Wolfpack fans away from prime heckling time.

Hell, even Technician’s supportive view doesn’t even support the idea of making the march in a regular occurrence.

Now that those games are over, I say go ahead and advance the next four years, this should be something that sticks around long enough to become tradition.

However, overdoing this march-in would only take away the electricity and aura from the event — so board members must keep it specifically for the big games.

Why don’t we scratch the idea of making our students the center of attention and use that energy to them some lessons in originality and how to cheer? I’ll make a deal with you — when students actually learn the words to the Alma Mater and the Fight Song (not “The Red & White”) then we can re-address the topic.

I much prefer the old school N-C-State chant…simple yet powerful

  2. TNCSU 02/13/2007 at 8:38 AM #

And wait until AFTER the NATIONAL ANTHEM and then yell, “Go Wolfpack.” I really don’t like the “…home of the Wolfpack” at the end of the Nat’l Anthem.

How does the student WPC get those seats anyway?

  4. choppack1 02/13/2007 at 8:44 AM #

I’m not against the march-in if it’s done 20 minutes before the game. 5 minutes before tipoff is cutting it too close and is coming close to trying to steal the spotlight. I’ve always thought that the “march in” was kind of dorky. It could be OK in the right contest – but please, now a few minutes before tipoff.

I guess they’re thinking that if they do it 20-30 minutes before tip off – no one will see it. And you know what I say to that – big deal.

I agree in regards to the National Anthem, that is a disgrace…the worst though, is when people do that at road football games…I mean, we aren’t even at home…disgraceful and stupid

Task Force To Discuss Changes To N.C. State Tailgating Policy http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1201904/

More trouble ahead? Who’s on this task force?

I was never very big on the SWC. I know they serve a purpose and in many instances serve it well; however, back in the good ol’ days of camping out for tickets it used to piss me off that the block of best seats were already taken before we even got in line. And I know there is this argument that those kids went to women’s volleyball games and wrestling matches to get “points” or some crap like that… but please. I went to those too on occasion and just because I didn’t want to wear a bike helmet with pompoms sticking out of it doesn’t make me any less of a supporter for NC State sports. Hell I played a sport for a relatively short period of time and I got zero preferential treatment… nor did I expect it.

I’m against the “marching in.” I think it’s… well… cheesy. In my eyes nothing beats just being there in those seats and screaming with reckless abandon when the time is appropriate. These Duke-like canned cheers and antics need to go.

    1) Bastardizing the national anthem REALLY pisses me off. Sing the whole thing, with the ACTUAL words, or stand reverently, hats off and hands over your heart. Hell, I can get my 3 kids (none older than 8) to follow that simple protocol.

    2) It amazes me how many people won’t even yell “Go to hell Carolina” anymore during the RAWFS cheer. It’s to the point where I feel self-conscious doing it. That line should be a staple of every NC State fan.

    3) The best part of sitting close to the court (especially the opposing bench) is yelling at the opposing players and coaches. Why? It’s the only time when they can REALLY hear you. I was at State from 1991-95, and when Kansas visited Reynolds, I even got Roy Williams to laugh at my taunting. For my money, FSU coach Pat Kennedy was the easiest/most enjoyable coach to mock. I did enjoy Pete Gaudet’s lone visit immensely, though (“Hey, Pete, how does it feel to destroy a Top Ten program in just one season?”)…

  10. BJD95 02/13/2007 at 9:35 AM #

I will never forgive the SWC for the pro-Les chants during my time at NC State. Just thinking about that still makes me mad. Fortunately, I could usually still get seats behind the opposing bench in reynolds if I was in line by 3 or 4 am (which I was 90% of the time).

The “first come, first served” unruly mob mentality was more in line with the great NC State hostile environment tradition, IMHO.

  11. Clarksa 02/13/2007 at 9:47 AM #

It was kinda nifty the first time they did it (Duke game), but it was pointless for the UNC-CH game…almost exactly like the football players weaving through the crowd…it was nifty the first time they did it, but quickly became a drag.

  12. burnbarn 02/13/2007 at 9:51 AM #

I was at UNC-Miami game.. evrytime they cranked up their fight song, there was a very loud go to hell state!

    I was surprised they remembered.

  13. newt 02/13/2007 at 10:01 AM #

I just wish the students would realize that the little mexican hat dance thingy is the fight song really fast, and you’re supposed to yell “go state” not just “hey” or whatever.

The students are more effective in their seats cheering rather than walking in at the last minute.

  14. packbackr04 02/13/2007 at 10:09 AM #

the AD will never allow NC State to get back to where it should be

  15. Sam92 02/13/2007 at 10:11 AM #

i don’t like toying with the national anthem, but i do like the students doing something coordinated – unity can build intensity. maybe “marching” in 5 minutes before tip off isn’t quite it, but i think they’re headed in the right direction by coordinating.

also, all of these mindgames work better when the team is strong, and we’re struggling this year, so maybe next year it will come together

  16. choppack1 02/13/2007 at 10:16 AM #

    This is a little distrubing:

“We didn’t do a good job of advertising some of that or the best job of policing some of that last year,” said Will Quick, a member of the N.C. State Football Task Force. “I think we’ll be discussing ways we can better implement some of the rules we made last year.”

    How about less rules?

  17. redfred2 02/13/2007 at 10:33 AM #

    “It was initially ESPN’s idea.”

Well, good, bad, or indifferent, as per usual, the idea didn’t come from the trail blazing think tank in Raleigh. Just par for the course.

  18. packpigskinfan23 02/13/2007 at 10:47 AM #

“Other changes could include adding more police officers and extending tailgating hours.”

that is ALL I am asking for!!! oh and Will Quick is a fucking prick. I live near him… hes the type of guy to wear a bowtie to a football game.

  19. GAWolf 02/13/2007 at 10:55 AM #

Nothing good ever comes from a “task force”…. nothing. And I agree… less rules. Why is it that every group that congregates considers it their duty to enact more rules. It’s ridiculously idiotic. And in that I include our Congress, the State legislature, church Sessions, PTA’s, “task forces”, and countless committees of various shapes and forms….

  20. GAWolf 02/13/2007 at 11:01 AM #

Wait. Wait. So ESPN told our students to march in and they marched in? This is getting more and more embarrassing all the while. Please say this isn’t so…

  21. Mr O 02/13/2007 at 11:03 AM #

Gawolf knows all about rules in his house.

  22. TNCSU 02/13/2007 at 11:18 AM #

^^And in that I include our Congress, the State legislature, church Sessions, PTA’s, “task forces”, and countless committees of various shapes and forms….

Add Gestapo Home Owners Associations to that list! While they serve a purpose, telling someone where they can plant a tree or put a BBQ pit in their backyard is overboard.

If I was a student, I sure as heck would rather be heckling the opposing team and getting rowdy than standing around for 30 minutes waiting to march in…

  23. legacyman 02/13/2007 at 11:28 AM #

Ask for something different and the students try…good for them. Try something different and the whinnies hit the stage…bad for them. March in a bit earlier only for the games with dook or unc-ch or maybe only unc-ch. Thanks, kids, for trying.

This post really opens up a can of worms for me. So here goes. I am an oldie, I guess–and this is my very first post ever. I think our cheerleaders are awesome athletes and our dance team good dancers. But, what happened to the Cheer Leaders? If it weren’t for the band and Mr. and Ms. Wolf, there’d be almost no united spirit/cheering. My friends and I sit just above the band and do all kinds of cheering we remember from high school. Sure wish we could find a group of people who remember what REAL spirit was like. We could rock the place. Forgive my ignorance and /or lack of appreciation, but I sure long for the days when cheering is about spirit and not flips, dips, and splits.

  25. gopack968 02/13/2007 at 11:39 AM #

The students will do best with the least supervision. Trying to ‘manage’ antics and spontineity is counter-productive. We will have an entertaining and smart student section if the students decide – not if the AD and/or ESPN decide.

The march I really want ended is the football player walk down from the Murphy Center to get in to the tunnel to run out onto the field. Agonizingly slow, just sucks the air out of the stadium – and I am just waiting for some terrible cleat/cement step/ankle injury. Hope TOB kills that one quick!
