The Wolfpack moves on to Atlanta tonight for a 7pm tip time vs Georgia Tech. You can check here throughout the day for previews of the game.

Today will be the last time that we wallow in happiness from Saturday, but we needed to memorialize more of the applause that Sidney Lowe’s Wolfpack earned for the win. Please scroll through our front page for numerous

TEAM OF THE WEEK: North Carolina State

Sidney Lowe had to be proud of his Wolfpack after back-to-back wins over teams that were leading the ACC at the time of their game. First came a stunner at Virginia Tech, followed by a big victory over Roy Williams’ Tar Heels.

COACH OF THE WEEK: Sidney Lowe, NC State

Most prognosticators figured the Wolfpack would contender for the basement in the ACC. Engin Atsur has been sidelined for much of the season. Andrew Brackman opted for baseball. NC State stunned Virginia Tech and North Carolina and let me tell you, Lowe is going to be a star down in Raleigh. He has a cool demeanor and he will get the job done.

* Sports Illustrated also named the Pack “Team of the Week”. (Link)

* So did The Sporting News (Link)

* Andy Katz got closest to ‘apologizing’ at ESPN where they proclaim that NC State rules the Triangle! (Link)

Can’t say I saw this coming. That would be a lie. But what I did see way back in November, when NC State came back to beat Michigan in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, was a team that had plenty of heart, desire and passion, and believed in everything its first-year coach said.

Every game will still be a struggle for the Wolfpack, but be certain about this: NC State won’t be an easy out under Sidney Lowe. This week, the Wolfpack became the headline team in The Triangle — and with UNC and Duke as competitors, that’s something to savor.

I have to admit the last few days have been great as a Pack fan. It was icing on the cake when Kay Yow won her 700th last night too. I wonder how a basketball team unaccustomed to such headlines and praise and press will play tonight? I can’t wait to watch. (How long has it been since I’ve said that about Pack basketball)?

Katz was always a huge Sendek fan when he was here so it could not have been easy for him to even partially backpedal. Of all the national media, I always thought Katz may have been the most generous to Herb.

It looks like Vegas is expecting a big let down in tonight’s game– State’s a 14 point dog. Prove ’em wrong Sidney!

  4. MadWolf92 02/06/2007 at 8:59 AM #

Of course Katz, being a left-coastie, is also seeing how Herb is struggling in Arizona on an up-close basis. It may be easier for him to give us some leeway now because of that.

Honestly…the guy who will never mention anything about this EVER again will be Jim Rome and he was one of the worst talking heads out there.

Jim Rome threw the fanbase under the bus, put it back in reverse, and than hit us again for good measure. The funny thing is he (like most of the talking heads) simply do not understand the history of our program nor the quirkiness of our fanbase so what they do not understand they decide to chastise.

    So be it…

  6. noah 02/06/2007 at 9:26 AM #

Honestly, what did you expect from Rome? I hated the movie, but the one redeeming quality of “Any Given Sunday” was John C. McGinley’s skewering of Rome.

Jim Rome epitomizes every single thing I *hate* about talk radio. Instead of being a forum for informed commentary, pointed questions and insight, it’s three hours of bloviating, preening into a mirror and self-congralatory masturabation.

  7. Sw0rdf1sh 02/06/2007 at 9:32 AM #

I missed the Jim Rome thing.

Whenever he says something completely stupid I just pull up that tape of Jim Everett coming over the desk and teaching him a little lesson.

Rome must have been picked on as a kid.

    Way to go Couch Yow!

  8. tractor57 02/06/2007 at 9:33 AM #

If Rome is involved I don’t listen or watch – ever.

  9. BoKnowsNCS71 02/06/2007 at 9:36 AM #

Noah/LF — I despise Rome. More that just for what he said about us but before that. Long weary pauses, BS emails read, clone-offs, nothing funny, kicking people when they are down and at times kicking people when its been shown that they did not do what was alledged, — then going on and on and on and on and on and on and on about nothing of interest.

It’s great that 850 the Buzz bought 620 the Bull so I can switch over to someting entertaining while Rome is on. XM was my alternative. Anything But Rome (ABR).

  10. Mr O 02/06/2007 at 9:40 AM #

Am I the only one that actually enjoys Jim Rome? He has fantastic guests and he is damn funny at times. He is way better than Dan Patrick on 620 Am from 1 to 3.

  11. Mr O 02/06/2007 at 9:41 AM #

Additionally, why are people interested in talking about Super Bowl commercials on local sports talk shows?

Listen up Clones. You guys are Ri-diculous. Un-Fathomable. Dis-respectful.

    NC State.

    What a Joke.

    *2 minute pause.

    Hi-Larious.

  13. choppack1 02/06/2007 at 9:54 AM #

Mr O – Rome can be funny and he can know his stuff. But he can also be as stupid as they come. When he’s talking about college sports in the South, he usually is. He’s a regionalist, he’ll never admit it, but he is. I’d rather listen Dave Glenn, Mark Packer, Mel Kiper or even Adam Gold.

  14. Mr O 02/06/2007 at 10:12 AM #

Choppack: Agree on all of those, but except for Kiper they are all local guys. I always prefer local sports talk because I want to hear about local sports. But for someone nationally syndicated, Rome is as good as anyone on the radio.

  15. noah 02/06/2007 at 10:16 AM #

Dan Patrick has the best sports show on the radio, IMO. His hour with Keith Olbermann is the best hour of talk radio in the day.

  16. BJD95 02/06/2007 at 10:37 AM #

The maddest I have been in quite some time is when Erik Kuselias left ESPN Radio’s “SportsBash” program. Listening to that on my drive home was worth the price of XM, by itself. Good analysis, good delivery, great guests, with an apporpriate heavy focus on football.

I vastly prefer shows that have little-to-no caller airtime.

  17. noah 02/06/2007 at 10:40 AM #

BJD — here, here! I wasn’t a huge Sportsbash fan, but I totally agree about no callers.

No offense to anyone, but why do I care what the ordinary sportscaller has to say? Your opinion, my opinion. We’re both uninformed sports fans.

I listen to sports radio to hear people like Ron Jaworski, and the guy with the glasses who lives in Seattle, and the guy on Fox Sports Radio who was a Dallas Cowboy scout. I want to hear EXPERT opinions. INFORMED comments.

Callers ought to ask questions and let the people on the inside answer.

    Comments are for discussion boards.

  18. choppack1 02/06/2007 at 10:41 AM #

I agree – I think the Mark Packer show drives that home because you’ll get some real good analysis and discussion, then the knuckleheads start calling in.

  19. Par Shooter 02/06/2007 at 10:45 AM #

I didn’t realize that Katz is a west coast guy. And there is a big distinction in my mind b/t how Katz handled things and how Rome handled things. During the last few years of Herb’s tenure, Katz was actually very complimentary of our program and Herb as a coach. I don’t recall any real sniping at our fanbase after Herb opted to bolt, but all of that blather kind of ran together for me (except for double g, who will live in infamy). I certainly felt that he gave us more than our fair share of good press during the Hodge years.

Rome, OTOH, couldn’t find NC State on a map if you left a trail of breadcrumbs and had absolutely no knowledge about our program’s recent or past history and knew nothing about Herb. He piled on, which is his MO. I think the only time he had Herb on was after he was hired at ASU and that was b/c he was joining the Pac10. I don’t think we’ll be hearing him again in the near future. Honestly, I don’t think that Rome has anything against NC State, he just used us as a punching bag when we were an easy target. And I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Sidney on his show at some point this year if we can continue to garner some national attention. And if invited, I would love to see Sidney go on the show to get his name out there and show the country what we already know…that he is articulate and knowledgable and a terrific interview.

  20. Red_Terrors 02/06/2007 at 10:47 AM #

I agree with noah that the Dan Patrick show is pretty good. However when that “north-end of a south-bound mule” (Olbermann) gets on there, he ruins it. Olbermann doesn’t know how to keep politics out of his sports.

  21. tractor57 02/06/2007 at 11:18 AM #

I like Olbermann when he sticks to sports but he rarely does.

  22. VaWolf82 02/06/2007 at 11:23 AM #

I vastly prefer shows that have little-to-no caller airtime.

Exactly! I nearly always turn the station whenever someone starts taking calls.

Rome: Today I have Stanley Lowe coach of the NC State Wolfpack
    Lowe: That’s Sidney

Rome: Well Mr Rowe, you are doing well with the Lobos there in Riley, NC.
Lowe: Thank you. But it’s Lowe and Ral…..

Rome: (Breaking in) When do you (pause) think the fan base is (pause) going to turn on you and chase you away like they did to HS?

Lowe: Excuse me, I hought you wanted to talk about how our team was playing?

Rome: Clones — Let’s hear your takes.

Lowe: Do you want to talk about basketball because …..

Rome: Is it true that you were the pushing for this job and putting the pressure on Lee Filbert to fire HS?

    Lowe: Huh?

Rome: That’s a wrap folks. More trouble in the Raleigh Quadrangle as the NC Central Lobos keep fighting to make up for losing a 5 star coach.

    Lowe: ?

Rome: Glad to have had this talk. How about them Heels?

Rome: So how long have you been ducking the answers,

Good link. GT to start charging $450 per seat per year for prime seats in basketball/football. They are nearly $3 million in the hole this year and the projections are the same for next year.
