Duke Game Entry

Duke BBa

I’ll be traveling for the Duke game, so I encourage any of the authors who are around on Saturday to add previews and reviews of Saturday’s game.

However, before we get going we have to highlight Sidney Lowe‘s perfect comments today from the N&O:

RALEIGH — It’s probably safe to say you’ll never hear N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe referring to a Duke game or North Carolina game as being, well, “1/16” of the ACC schedule. Asked today about the importance of facing the Blue Devils Saturday at the RBC Center, Lowe said:

“They all count as one game, but when you’ve been in this area and you’ve been in this league, this conference, you know it’s a big game. Duke, Carolina, N.C. State, Wake Forest … those are big games.

“It’s not just another game. No, it’s not. I like to say it’s a big game.”

Sounds like someone who played at State, doesn’t it? Someone really understands the nature of the Big Four rivalries and how much such games mean to the fan base.

For the record, Coach Lowe is currently 1-0 vs the Big Four.

Why are Dookies always putting themselves in awkward positions like this? Todays N & O (not the one of Scheyer’s hand chech foul that wasn’t whistled), the Gonzaga game, I mean what the hell? It’s like some kind of “don’t ask don’t tell” thing K brought down from West Point.

More importantly, some of the rhetoric I have heard by the talking heads concerning the match up is that it slightly favors us because that Costner should be able to netralize McRoberts. While I believe that based on potential BC should be able to match, or better yet out muster Josh McRoberts’ efforts, again it’s critical to keep perspective. Costner has done a bang up job against the likes of UNCG and WF, as he should have. But matching up against someone with more big game experience should prove a huge test for him. I thought Sean Williams of BC really exposed Costner for being still wet behind the ears two saturday’s ago. I’m hopeful that he can have a breakout game (and have different advice than Simmons got after the Duke game) but I realize that it’s still very early in his development of a player.

I do like certain match up’s for State, especially if Atsur plays. I know we’ve seen some some bone head plays y GG at times, and some have grown impatient, butt… Have you seen is points per game avg. in ACC games? I still can’t read all the KenPom and section six stats with offensive possesion stats and all. Statistics are gret at showing me numbers, but can you just tell me what happened? Bottom line is that I think GG can abuse the Dook perimeter. If they put Nelson on him then I like Fells’ chances. We need to run every chance we get and we need to give McCauley and Costner a chance to operate down low, but I really feel our size and athleticism in the 2 & 3 spot (if Atsur suits up) is a no brainer.

Great comments by Coach Lowe. No bulletin board material, and it stays consistent to what he has been preaching to the guys about playing for something and represeting something bigger then the here and now. Go Pack!

I’d personally like a refund on the 3.5 mins of my life I lost out on by watching that video attached.

Only confirms the Duke student body is full of band geeks and high anxiety nerds.

  4. McWufPacker06 01/20/2007 at 12:11 AM #

um when you give Pack1998 his refund may I have one too. I feel dumber all ready.

    dumber ‘all ready’ huh?

    me too

  6. beowolf 01/20/2007 at 9:21 AM #

I’ll say it … SFN’s rival-bashing game day posts have a poor track record of success, and I’m so superstitious.

Then again, those were for football.

I liked the video….damn I guess that says all u need to know about me!

As for matchups…..Duke has struggled at times, but they play unreal halfcourt defense. This time kinda reminds of K’s early teams….play a lot of guys to keep the energy level high, and totally stymie teams defensively. You can never overestimate the imprtance of great half court defense against a team with no point guard. We will struggle mightily today to score. My guess is we will be in the upper 40’s or low 50’s in ponits. The ket will be our defense. Duke has struggled to score, but if we do what we have done all year…which is give guys wide open looks for threes…Duke does have 3 guys who will hit the open ones. If Lowe plays his bench like he did against Wake, then we can stay rested enough to play better perimeter D. If that’s the case we have a shot to win 52-48 or something. But if Lowe chokes like he did against BC and play 5 or 6 guys….we will get beat 64-48 or so.

By the way….any chance of us actually getting asses in all the seats today?

Duke’s fortunes are highly dependent on the play of Paulus so if we can find a way to disrupt his game than we can seriously hinder Duke’s offense.

    Paulus’s Season Averages:
    Points: 8.4
    FG %: 45.2
    TFG%: 46.8
    A/TO: 1.1

I actually believe we match-up fairly well with Duke other than depth and our guards have the ability to disrupt Paulus on the defensive end due to their size. I hope Sid is planning to use the bench players to help keep everyone well rested.

    Paulus’s Averages in Losses:
    Points: 4.3
    FG %: 28.6
    TFG %: 22.2
    A/TO: 0.4

Come on guys, let’s not denigrate real-life homosexuals by comparing them to Duke players. (The title was pretty clever, though.)

  10. tvp 01/20/2007 at 11:19 AM #

I hope we can make Paulus’s experience a living hell, like we did for Ish Smith.

Anyone know what happened to Jarvis Williams (football player)? He’s no longer listed on the basketball roster on Gopack.com or ESPN.com, and while Darrell Davis has worked his way into some PT, Jarvis Williams has not. Did he give up on his second sport? He was actually the more highly touted of the two in basketball in high school. I’m wondering if he got frustrated if he figured he’d be nothing more than a practice player.

This is a really interesting matchup and IMO this was a bad year to have a sub-par team in the ACC. If there was any year that we could take it to duke and blow them out it would be this year. If we had last years team this would be a total blowout. Duke is by far the most overrated team in the country and it’s nice to see that we actually match up well against an opponent.

I think that Costner should contain McRoberts pretty well today and as people have mentioned they will, in essence, cancel each other out. IMO McCauley is going to slaughter Zoubek and Lance Thomas on inside scoring.

The interesting matchup to watch will be Demarcus Nelson vs. Gavin Grant. That is IMO the X factor matchup in this game.

It’s a close one on paper. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see if we show up to this game like we did for the last one. GO PACK!

I think we need a good start. If we can avoid the stupid TOs and some of the juicy soft passes out on the perimeter that we throw we have a chance.

If we score in the 60s we lose. I think we need to be in the 70s to win. Duke is a team i think we can out score.

  14. redfred2 01/20/2007 at 11:58 AM #

Did anyone just see that (???), whatever it was, hit that half court shot at the Dean Dome?

It’s not shaping up to be a good day.

  15. MadWolf92 01/20/2007 at 12:09 PM #

Umm, you guys ever seen a departmental video? They’re *all* that stupid.

  16. vtpackfan 01/20/2007 at 4:04 PM #

Costner right on que, showing he is still an ACC infant. If Fells makes a simple dunk then the team gets inspired. Oh, well. Nice shots of Atsur riding the pine. This has the potential to go down as the single worst senior season of all time. I’m pretty negative right now, so I’ll just shut it. Go Pack.

  17. beowolf 01/20/2007 at 4:06 PM #

Please, for the love of God, SFN, don’t make any more rival game posts like this.

    It’s just inviting trouble.

On another note, when did the NCAA eliminate the reach-in foul?

  18. Jamie 01/20/2007 at 4:12 PM #

beo, apparently it has only been eliminated if you are wearing blue.

  19. gopack968 01/20/2007 at 4:26 PM #

Well, at this point (7:17 in the first half) the game is not going too well, but the announcing is such an improvement. The main ABC team of Musberger and Lavin are doing a great job. They are not slavishly praising K and did a nice piece on Sydney Lowe. Lavin talked about how much he was impressed by the program. Nice comments on Larry Harris and Monte Towe as well. Such a refreshing change from the regular idiots.

Just had a nice shot of TOB in the crowd.

First time I have enjoyed a game broadcast this season. Now if we could just stop the bad turnovers (10 already).

  20. Alex_01 01/20/2007 at 4:28 PM #

It was funny to listen to Lavin slurp Lee Fowler

  21. beowolf 01/20/2007 at 4:37 PM #

Ferguson is the worst passer I think I’ve ever seen. He is such a prototypical Herb one-season scholarship-on-hold player.

  22. 82grad 01/20/2007 at 4:41 PM #

wow, this is ugly. can’t blame the refs, we just are sucking and dook is playing well.

  23. beowolf 01/20/2007 at 4:42 PM #

OK, they’ve fallen apart now. Time to go back and do some yardwork, like so many previous seasons.

IMO, I don’t care if we have five players left, I wouldn’t play Ferguson. If Lowe has the ACC record assist-to-turnover ration, Ferguson is going for the opposite record.

  24. PurplePeopleEaters 01/20/2007 at 4:43 PM #

Trevor Ferguson= Mike O’Donnell. What a waste of a scholarship.

  25. schitzonation84 01/20/2007 at 4:50 PM #

SFN never a negative comment against an upcoming opponent again please. I’m posting this at half time and we could not look worse. I hate to say it but sidney is getting schooled by “k”. Why even show the 1-3-1 he had to know they were ready for it. My biggest disapointment is the lack of energy from all the players. this is very ugly. NCSU is actually better than dook this year.
