Very Close to Official – O’Brien New Leader of the Pack

It’s now a headline on ESPN.com – Boston College head coach Tom O’Brien will leave to coach Atlantic Division rival NC State. It looks as if we may get a formal announcement as early as tomorrow.

As SFN noted earlier today, we agree with the apparent decision of the NC State search committee – Tom O’Brien is a better hire than Paul Johnson. And pretty much everyone agreed that Johnson would be a good hire, and clearly an upgrade over Amato.

I don’t want to repeat too much of the logic from the above-linked post. Suffice to say – those who claim Tom O’Brien is “Herb Sendek v. 2.0” are simply wrong, in our estimation. According to SFN’s sources, Coach O’Brien sought out the NC State job with the same vigor and tenacity as did Jimbo Fisher. He really wants to be here, and I think it’s safe to assume it’s because he believes he can elevate his success to a whole new level at NC State. He can go from “pretty good” to periodically competing for the ACC title, and regularly make good bowls (as even his current level of performance would land NC State in good bowl games). His floor essentially is identical to the Dick Sheridan level of performance, and few Wolfpackers complain about that era. And that’s not to say we expect that to be his ultimate ceiling – there’s every bit as much reason to hope for upside from TOB as there was with respect to PJ. I don’t think O’Brien would have made this move if he didn’t think he could take it to the next level at NC State. We should be honored and very enthusiastic that such an accomplished, respected coach feels that way about our university.

Please feel free to share your opinions below (don’t forget to contribute more facts at VaWolf’s thread below). We hope that even those fans hoping for Johnson, Fisher, or somebody else will be fair and rational about this hire. At SFN, we couldn’t be more excited about ushering in a new winning era of NC State football.

Wow, they did a great job ofkeeping this hire quiet…I am getting pretty excited about this hire. I hope it is for real.

    I’m hopeful.

    YES…Go TOB

I was kinda rooting for a Fisher/Pelini package deal, but I can see why the powers that be, in particular Oblinger, would like this guy…good academics, disciplinarian…much better image than Amato & should regularly have at least 8 & 9 win seasons & get us to bowl games..overall, I’m pleased. Like SFN, I prefer this choice over PJ.

Awesome! This is just great!!! I never saw this comming though. This is even better than Paul Johnson! The guy is a proven winner. We must have made an impression on him. If he can win 9 games a year at BC I have no doubt he can do it at NC State. He will be able to recruit and will give our team some much needed discipline. All I care about is winning games and being respectable. That’s just what O’Brien will do for us. Won six bowl games in a row too! I can’t wait for next season when Sidney Lowe breaks in his #11 ranked recruiting class and O’Brien gets our talented group of football players playing like a team! Great day to be a State fan! Wahoo!

  6. Buck 12/07/2006 at 12:12 AM #

Agree a solid hire for us. O’Brien’s offenses have been very good…not just at BC, but also at UVA when he was the long time OC. And this is not the only reason for me to say the following:

I totally agree with BJD95 about relating this to Sendek….We are about to hire a great coach who is going to lead the Pack for a long time and all some idiots can do is compare this to Sendek? IMHO anybody who would throw in the name of Sendek to compare to this hire, in a completely different sport is 1) stupid, and 2) totally obsessed with Herb. You demand that ESPN to get over it…so get over it already.

Go TOB!! Lead the Pack Back!!

It’s amusing that you guys continuously pointed out facts about Herb’s record against the top 25 and his conference record, and yet you support us hiring a football head coach with a 4-25 record vs. the top 25 and a 37-34 conference record.

Look at his record. He has feasted on cupcakes over the year. How many wins does he have against Army, Stanford, Temple, etc?

Every time O’Brien has had a chance to lock up a title he has found a way to lose an important game.

    2006: NCSU and Miami
    2005: UNC
    2004: Syracuse

Also you say he really wants the job.

He is supposedly very underappreciated at BC and underpaid. He has put his name out for many open jobs in the past few years.

He is currently making about $750k a year. News 14 reported tonight they heard he would be making around $1.25 a year at State. I would be very interested in any job that would give me a 50% pay raise.

Is Phil Rivers the source of the TOB news, at least indirectly? Even though most of the article are saying “multiple sources”. Rivers is the only person on record saying O’Brien is the new coach.

“It’s Tom O’Brien,” Rivers said of the Boston College coach. “I got a call this morning and they said it was a done deal.”

    http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2006/12/06/sports/professional/chargers/0_01_2612_6_06.txt

Who are “they” that Rivers refers to?
Another thing: If Rivers found out “this morning” (Pacific time), then it appears that Norm Chow’s withdrawal from consideration Wednesday afternoon was the result of O’Brien being hired rather than Chow turning State down.

Also, an article about Paul Johnson, in the light of the O’Brien hiring, says, “According to those same sources, Johnson never heard directly from athletic officials at N.C. State and never received a formal offer from the school.”

SFN et al. – like I said on the previous thread, I think this is a good hire…a safe hire…I think TOB will do well here and I look forward to seeing a difference in our team next year…but hiring TOB specifically is not what I take issue with…

what I want to know is: do you feel a comprehensive nation-wide search took place where we carefully interviewed more than just 1 or 2 potential candidates and found the best fit like we were lead to believe would happen or was this just a limited search?

again, while I think TOB is a good hire, it worries me that our search was limited in scope…

i’m not trying to ruffle any feathers…just looking for some answers…

  11. Pack96Attack 12/07/2006 at 12:38 AM #

Why wouldn’t we want a coach that has head coach experience, multiple national championships ( I-AA ) , 3 or 4 yr. consecutive National Coach of the Year, has led NAVY to some very good years. A WINNER AT EVERY PLACE HE’S BEEN to come here and lead NC STATE ??

TOB may have a decent record, but sorry I don’t get really excited over this hire if it’s true…

Prediction: We’ll be saying we could have had PJ five years from now when he’s somewhere big doing great things!

  12. Buck 12/07/2006 at 12:44 AM #

Wolpfack – Comprehensive nationwide search of sorts should take place on that list in the ADs (and the coaching consultant’s) drawer before the firing so that there is a short list to work from. This is also where a coaching search consultant comes in handy.

Also…you are being too tough here on the searchers…it would seem from your comment that a quick hire is bad? On the contrary, it is good to target your man and be decisive so that it does not become a long drawn out process where you might lose someone in the middle to other schools in the same boat. I think State did a great job here…quick and decisive.

“do you feel a comprehensive nation-wide search took place where we carefully interviewed more than just 1 or 2 potential candidates”

See my post above. It doesn’t sound like Paul Johnson was interviewed. If he wasn’t interviewed, I can’t believe very many candidates were.

O’Brien is not better than Chow would have been or the up coming young assit. coach a round country. But for sure he’s better PJ at Navy. Hopefully he will bring some good young assit. coaches. His offense at BC was not that great either. Let’s pray that good old boy’s in the south don’t run coach O’ Brien the northern away. It’s ok to have them playing you but it’s a different story when you are a head coach at State. Can you say coach V & Amato both northern. The wolf pack club had no problem with them. But some adminstration & staff did. I hope they want turn on coach Lowe later. This is our track record. Maybe things have gotten better since the 80’s & parts of 90;s too. Let’s hope so.

  15. Buck 12/07/2006 at 12:46 AM #

    justaguy…
PJ was interviewed…by the coaching consultant for the very reason that both sides can deny they talked directly.

  16. justaguy 12/07/2006 at 12:50 AM #

    Buck,
I guess the terms ‘search’ and ‘interview’ are quite loosely defined, and most likely it is pointless to deduce how it all came about that O’Brien was the choice. I would agree that State did well to get someone of O’Brien’s calibre.

  17. Buck 12/07/2006 at 12:53 AM #

I am happy because TOB’s teams are known for relaly beating other teams in the trenches. I really would like to see that when we have Brown and Baker int the backfield. Hope that can be accomplished with the current crop of players so Brown and Baker can be let loose to the fullest extent.

  18. wolpfack 12/07/2006 at 12:59 AM #

^Buck – I have no problem with a quick hire…so long as a proper search was done…maybe thats the catch…what is a proper search…to me, its taking that short list, finding out if the coaches on it are interested, interviewing them and making a decision from there….from what i gather, PJ and Jimbo were on that short list and both of them were ignored…to me, that just doesnt spell out a proper search…

now, maybe I am being a little “tough” on the searchers…but lets be honest, colleges are businesses and searching for a new coach is an important task (college athletic programs are cash cows and good coaching yeilds results, which yeilds $$)…as an alum and financial supporter of the school (read “shareholder”), I want to make sure my money has been well spent…

I do think TOB is a good hire and I think/hope it turns out to be money well spent…I plan on being at my share of games next year cheering on our boys in red…just saying…

  19. rky 12/07/2006 at 1:09 AM #

Interesting. I was tuning in to the BC vs. Navy Meineke Bowl to pull for the new Pack coach . . . just thought it would be PJ. I think many Pack fans will be interested in seeing the coaching matchup for this bowl game. Best of luck to our new coach, TO’B . . . just win, baby!

WRAL web site has confirmed that O’Brien is the guy.

    Thursday press conference, maybe.

LF was probably told exactly what he had to get in great detail and TOB probably met all of the criteria.

Just skimming the comments on this thread and earlier threads then thinking of this search as compared to the BB coach search. It is really funny how one of the most criticized things about the BB coach search was the length and the public nature while when looking for a FB coach the most criticized things are the speed whith wiich this apparently has happened along with the lack of public information. Personally I prefer the second as long as a real search is done (I assume that was carried out and we will only know how successful it is in a few years – given that the search is over).

  22. TomCat 12/07/2006 at 1:19 AM #

What’s his record vs. UNC ?…….. that’s all that really matters- right? In some regards: I see his resume 7,8,9 wins a season, bowl wins, etc.— then I see the team which lost to a 3-9 NC State team and looked totally in awe of weak Miami team struggling for bowl contention a week ago… Teams take on the persona of their coach. I’m hoping NCSU provides the missing ingredient to O’Brien’s formula for next-level success. All the tools are here.

  23. Buck 12/07/2006 at 1:44 AM #

    From DG’s blog:

“…it’s likely that O’Brien will bring all or most of his BC staff with him to Raleigh, including assistant head coach/recruiting coordinator Jerry Petercuskie and long-time coordinators Dana Bible (offense) and Frank Spaziani (defense). O’Brien’s staff at BC was one of the most stable in the nation. All nine of the Eagles’ assistants held their positions for at least the last four seasons, and five have been with O’Brien for eight years or longer.”

TOB’s stability of assistants is certainly a good thing given what we have seen lately.

I sure hope this is not another Lee Foulup. It’s kind of puzzling that we went out and picked one of the few coaches we could beat. I don’t get it. Not to be a pessimist, but I also don’t like to be a school that goes out and raids the other conferences team’s cupboards. This just looks like a future mess we have to clean up. I hope not.
