TSN: Grant Needs to Take The Point

The Sporting News‘ Mike DeCourcy talks NC State basketball in his blog. You gotta love the attention!

Here’s the thing: Atsur probably is out two weeks. The Pack’s next game is an early ACC game Sunday afternoon at Virginia, which features the league’s top point guard, Sean Singletary. Grant’s job will get tougher, immediately. He better be a quick study.

I was at the game on Monday night and noticed something in person that did not seem to translate as clearly on the replay of the game that I watched (so that I could hear Jimmy Dykes’ comments).

Did anyone else notice that with about eight minutes to the go in the game the entire NC State team was exhausted? The whole team hat hit a physical wall. But, more interestingly was that the team’s exhaustion happened almost simultaneously with a NOTICEABLE change in Gavin Grant’s demeanor on the court. I don’t know what happened but Grant, who had been noticeably crisp and ‘energetic’ (even when he was running the point), suddenly just turned off. Kind of shut down.

It was really odd. Grant started walking the ball up the court in a manner that just screamed strange. It was like his feelings were hurt. All crispness from Grant – and then the rest of the team – just disappeared. It was more than just playing conservatively with a lead; and I noticed it a good 5 (game minutes) prior to Grant’s ridiculous back-court violation.

Did anyone else notice this?

Absolutely noticed it. But it appeared to be more out of exhaustion/shell shock/inexperience than anything emotional. It was like the pressure was getting to us of having a lead in a big game. Maybe some leftover memories of last year’s end of season collapses got to them.

I haven’t watched the replay yet.

additionally…that quick three that Grant took was absolutely huge. I noticed Grant being a bit off from the very beginning though. He missed some mid-range jumpers early and never really got going. Though I agree with you that the way he played point in the middle portion of the game was very different from the end of the game.

Grant has never been the “man” in college and he was forced to be the “man” from a position he didn’t even play in HS. Tough situation for him really.

I certainly did, and commented on it when I first noticed it. What brought my attention to it was that I was waiting to see it from Atsur, I already think he is playing way too slow and deliberate from the outset of every ballgame. It’s a leftover for Atsur from the earlier years. When Grant starting hesitating likewise, while bringing it up court, I noticed it immediately and my temperature went up a few degrees. A few plays later I noticed his shoulders sagging and body language, and he looked shot. I thought it was just flat out physical exhaustion and I got a little upset with people talking bad and giving him a hard time late in the game.

    ???

Anyone watching Wake get throttled by at Air Force by 30 points? Is Prosser going to end being worse than Gillen?

Even though I was really hard on Grant on Monday night, I understand that he had to adjust in-game in a major way.

Jeff: The weird thing was that he had adjusted well for 20 minutes and then BOOM! He was like a different person.

I think he did some stupid things (like take very quick outside shots when we had plenty of lead), but as Mr. O told me to give him a break, OK . . . so the glass is half full.

What I don’t like (and what I believe Lowe is trying desperately to get our team to understand) is when Grant stands there and watches the wingman take the pass and drive the baseline past him. He plays NO DEFENSE! Watch him on Sunday. I’m not talking about being in the right place to grab a rebound, or picking up a loose steal. I’m talking about putting pressure on his man, denying him the ball, and moving his feet (his knees are straight the whole defensive possession).

wake will be ok, they are young, really young.

I also noticed that the whole team was tired in the second half. I think we had to put forth a lot of energy to come back and build a big lead. Then all of a sudden we hit the wall. Some people were angry at Grant for his sloppy play down the stretch, but the whole team was sloppy.

Energy is going to carry us this year. Some games we will play great and some we will struggle and it all comes back to this.

Noticed it too. But, we got the W. So definitely glass half full…

The truth is we are going to get gassed against most of the good teams we play this year. The question is can we survive enough of those games to get to wherever we might get?

Enjoy it when we are laying it all on the line. Hang on when we are playing on fumes. I’m having more fun watching basketball than I’ve had since the 97 tournament. We all knew on that Sunday morning that we didn’t have the legs to win, but we showed up. We lost and we were proud of what our team left on the floor.

Give this team a chance. We may get to New York, or not! But let’s have fun for awhile.

I noticed it. My opinion is it had more to do with him focusing on the refs letting him get mugged than with being tired. He needs to let Sid worry about that. Sid will correct it.

Sid’s postgame comments were also telling. He was apparently struggling with getting the guys to use the shot clock later in the game. I dont know how, but the 10 second call looked like Grant was so busy slowing it down that he forgot about the 10 second rule.

(Just for clarity.. The “back court violation you mean is the 10 second call, right?) I dont remember a ridiculous over and back – what we commonly call a back-court violation. Maybe I missed it in the slew of TO’s there.

Grant will be fine. Costner was LOST in the first few games. SId is getting through it appears.

Sid is an excellent coach. It is obvious the guys trust him and listen. Let’s enjoy the season. Sid knows how to explain what is going on better than any other coach or analyst I have ever heard. I have been watching ACC basketball for many years, but I am learning a lot from his comments. I hope he doesn’t change the way he analyzes the games.

I think Grant did well, and then the City came out in him. He wanted more of the McCauley type lobs, to make a point, and thus lost focus. Fatigue DEFINITELY played a role. I also think Ferguson will help out, its likely he becomes avialable before Atsur.

i imagine their muscles must have been rather burning and heavy by that point. l. . i think it was sheer exhaustion!!

Teams that exhaust themselves, like the Pack Monday night, often get a reprieve in the last minutes of the game when the end-game fouling and timeouts begin. Michigan got to within 7 points, 66-59, with 3:25 left. I think the pack showed a little more life down the stretch when they got these much needed breaks in play.

When playing only 6 or 7 players fatique is just going to happen. I think what we are going to see during this season is guys taking a break occasionally on the offensive end to get the energy back up. Possibly will see more timeouts by Lowe late in the game just to get them a breather.
But a little help will be on the way after the first semester.

“Grant has never been the “man” in college and he was forced to be the “man” from a position ”

I think this and physical exhaution were the culprits.

Sidney is asking somethign from his players that I do not think Herb ever really did. He is handing them the reins and saying “you do it”. Herb tried to control everything they did. So this is a new experience for Grant. Combine that with a new postion and it had to be a bit overwhelming.

  16. gopack968 11/30/2006 at 8:53 AM #

Sidney’s timeout with around 1 minute left was huge. He got them focused on going the distance and it showed in their play up to the buzzer. The team really responds to him. Grant’s time violation happened as he was trying to follow Sidney’s direction, even mimicking his hand gestures. He got so caught up in that he lost the clock. I was really encouraged watching the game in the RBC.

What I can’t understand is how Amaker failed to use the press and his deep bench to exhaust State. He is not particularly impressive as a coach.

I think with the big lead Grant was trying for the splashy – explosive plays, which if made would have put the nail in the coffin. Also, when the TO was called after the bad pass it looked like Grant was laughing with his teammates and shaking his head – as if he knew it was bad and was and was acknowledging that. I think he is playing great team ball but occaisionally trying to do too much. With a little more chemistry it will be fine.

As I posted in the game blog, it appeared to me that Gavin lost complete confidence in his teammates. He looked as though he thought he had to do everything. The crazy thing is that his teammates were playing out of their heads for the entire game. It really bothered me too… whatever “it” was.

has anyone seen this article. tudor really hits the nail on the head with a few big things in this article.

  20. Rochester 11/30/2006 at 9:30 AM #

^Yeah, it’s like Tudor is one of the first (if not THE first) to acknowledge what we’ve all been saying. We want a coach who plays to win, not one who played not to lose (and blew a lot of leads along the way).

Depth/fatigue will lose us quite a few games this year, but its easy to see the kids are learning every game and, imagine this, they’re having fun.

While we’re on basketball, I wanted to point out this *excellent* discussion of defense in basketball from the BigTenWonk blog:

    http://bigtenwonk.blogspot.com/2006/11/only-you-can-cure-dad-defensive.html

While he is pretty much just about big ten basketball, his analysis is excellent, and he uses some of the same type of analysis you find over on SectionSix. I encourage you to check it out.

  23. db321 11/30/2006 at 9:56 AM #

I noticed it as well. I think he was trying to slow it down, because that was what Lowe was asking him to do, and that might have caused a shift. I also think fatigue was a big factor as well. Also, Lowe chewed Grant out as he was walking back to the team huddle after one of his turnovers…when was that and could that have contributed to Grant’s demeanor and body language?

  24. partialqualifier 11/30/2006 at 9:58 AM #

Great comments on Grant. I think we all saw a kid who was extremely tired making the mental & physical mistakes fatigue causes. My opinion is that in Grant’s entire life he may have never been in the position he was in Monday night: Handling the ball 100% of the time with the game on the line protecting a lead. I think the “wall” he hit came precisely when Michigan started playing much better defensively and Lowe wanted to run more clock per possession so his tired Pack could hold on. Grant was obviously uncomfortable, and he should have been. He is not a point guard, but he plays one at NC State. For the first 30 minutes he looked like he had stayed at a Holiday INN the Sunday night.
