Cowher Johnson? Fisher? Other?

Sorry that we are late on this. We are only bothering to put it up so that we can say that it is up there. Bill Cowher said no to the Wolfpack in public today. However, after the public comments Chris Mortenson commented on Erik Kuselias’ radio show (ESPN) that Cowher to State is still a possibility – not a certain ‘no’ yet.

Honestly, we have no clue if there is anything more to Mortenson’s comments regarding the chance that Cowher could still end up at State; Cowher’s comments certainly didn’t sound like they left much room for interpretation. So, we don’t want to try to talk ourselves into a situation where we try to convince ourselves that Cowher’s press conference was a tactic to get out of the spotlight.

You can take a look at the video of Cowher’s comments by clicking here. Additionally, the reliable Dave Glenn says

There is confirmation today, from both Cowher and university sources, that he is not a candidate for the N.C . State job. As reflected below, this result is the one NCSU officials expected.

If Cowher’s comments were 100% legitimate and the ride with him is over, then we’re pretty perplexed about the way that this has played out from a public relations pespective. It certainly wasn’t the smoothest of moves. One of our friends emailed this afternoon and was fuming. The text of the email went like this:

F’ing Fowler could have done this. Isn’t the whole point of Neinas to KEEP THIS EXACT THING from happening? What does he do? I’ve wanted PJ all along, so that he turned us down is not a big deal to me, but this PR disaster is exactly what we did not need. Now it is a circus and everyone can (and will) point at us and laugh. Why would BC do this to us? How can Neinas let it happen? I never would have guessed that BC would publically “Calipari” us. I love these guys who spend years talking about how they would take our job, only to publically humiliate us when it is offered to them.

We are sure that the search has been simultaneously running different parallel tracks in private, but now the public scrutiny will turn to Navy’s Paul Johnson. Earlier in the week Johnson was widely speculated by many to be a strong #2 after Coach Cowher. Did he remain the lead horse as NC State has analyzed other candidates? We don’t know. But we definitely hope that those close to the search have kept their eyes wide open and given all candidates legitimate consideration. We voiced our thoughts in this entry.

Earlier today we highlighted some comments by Steve Logan regarding Paul Johnson that some readers viewed as concerning. If we had to voice one other major concern then it would definitely be the composition of Johnson’s unimpressive staff. Take a look at these guys and you will understand our point.

Coach Johnson still has the Army/Navy game to coach this weekend, so we would not expect much to get done with him prior to the conclusion of that game therefore giving Lee Fowler and the search committee time to contemplate alternative options. Many people out there are speculating on some of these options and we just don’t have enough concrete information to do anything other than speculate as well.

The following are some random comments related to the search:

* Like Cowher, Norm Chow and David Cutcliffe both commented publicly today that they have not been contacted by NC State. Of course they haven’t. Nobody is going to be contacted by NC State until a deal is on its way to being struck. This is one of the primary purposes of hiring a consultant/search firm to help navigate the process.

* LSU’s Jimbo Fisher may have much more upside than Paul Johnson, but he could also have more downside. Fisher could easily be the next Mark Richt or Bobby Petrino; then again, he could end up being David Cutcliffe at Ole Miss.

* Where there is the greatest risk comes the greatest opportunity for big rewards. This is why Athletics Directors are paid the big bucks to make these types decisions. One can only hope that their AD has been diligent in making connections and studying coaches through the years prior to being thrown into such a position. Rumor is that it is hard to stay on top of your job eating at Jimmy V’s Steakhouse every night, coming into the office at 10am every day, or hanging out on Lake Gaston on the weekends.

* If you are an ESPN INsider then you will see some nice comments about many of the names mentioned as potential candidates for the State job in this entry highlighting the country’s Top 10 hottest assistant coaches. We will wet your whistle with the comments that they shared about the #1 assistant, Jimbo Fisher:

His name was circulated for the FSU offensive coordinator vacancy, but word is he is poised to get his own program to run. Fisher has coached under both Terry Bowden and Nick Saban. Players love him, and he’s regarded within the coaching community as a great play-caller. Has had the tag as the hot assistant for a while after consistently putting up big numbers with the Tigers’ offense. If Cincy wants an offensive guy, Fisher might be it.

* Someone made a good comment to us today – “If you be supportive of hiring Jim Grobe, then why wouldn’t support Paul Johnson”.

* Evidently, Dr. Jerry Punch has made supportive comments of former Miami coach Larry Coker in public and private. Any time that a Miami-related coach is mentioned then you can bet that Steve Logan’s name will not be far away. Logan has very strong ties with many of Miami’s coaches over the last 20 years.

I for one, am not giving up hope on Cowher. I really liked the alternative answer to the coaching dilema – have an interim. There is no way BC is staying with the Steelers next year. They completely suck this year, they are luck laster and even NFL commentators notice the lack luster in BC. I also am in the definite minority, defending Fowler. Why are we so angry with not knowing anything when all the ‘public knowledge’ ultimately ruined our basketball coach search. I know by searching all sites that SFN has all the latest up to date knowledge on EVERYTHING relating to NCSU athletics, but can can we not, for once, just let the search go on! We do not need a huge public search for a coach – it embarassed us all last time – so for once can we please let LF and all do their job and get us a great new coach. Rather it be PJ or NC. I am in favor of SFN’s previous blog about the possiblity of having an interim coach. I totally agreed with the whole synompsis and hope for the best for the Pack.

If Jimbo could bring Pelini with him, that would be a duo we would love to have. That is the best of both worlds. At least they could win some recruiting battles with Butch. I just don’t think PJ could.

As for the Coker possibility: if he can’t win at Miami, he WILL NOT win here. The “Miami” jersey and tradition recruited most players to go there anyway. He couldn’t win with all that talent.

  3. packk 11/29/2006 at 11:50 PM #

If Coker could not control his players, I certainly do not want him on our field. We have no discipline to speak of.

  4. StateFans 11/29/2006 at 11:50 PM #

But Coker DID win at Miami. He is one of the three winningest coaches of this decade and has a national championship. He is one horrible call away from having two national championships.

We aren’t promoting Coker. Just promoting fact. You can’t say Coker didn’t win.

  5. packk 11/29/2006 at 11:53 PM #

True that. I just feel that was one of our major problems this year and yes, I do think what happened to Coker was f’d up. But, knowing one of our weaknesses, do you think he could come in and take charge?? I am asking for anyones opinion.

  6. quypack93 11/30/2006 at 12:12 AM #

all of a sudden, this is about who can outrecruit butch. there are twelve teams in the acc, should they go ahead and change their current coach now if they don’t think their coach can outrecruit butch? the idea of having an interim coach right now so that we can wait for cowher is more than just plain stupid. how are we going to recruit kids? and what happened if that time comes and cowher changes his mind? we will look like a bunch of idiots. you can never tell in the world of big money sports nowaday. you don’t put you football program on the shelf for a year to wait for someone. noone is worth that kind of consideration. i am a cowher fan but not even for him. i hope that our ad and our administration don’t, for one second, entertain this kind of idea. so many of my friends who are state fans also have this fantasy about cowher. i understand that he is a superbowl winning coach and all that but there is no garantee that he will be wildly successful here. i hope that with the background that we had with the bball head coaching search debacle that the school doesn’t get into a mentality of “winning the news conference” hiring. you bring a guy in to win football games, no matter what style, and not putting emphasis on make a splash at the introduction news conference. it baffled me as to why we even went after calipari and lavin for our bball hc position. we did to win a popularity contest and it backfired on us.

  7. Mr O 11/30/2006 at 12:17 AM #

I can’t figure out why people do or will worry about Cowher turning down our job. It was totally obvious to everyone we were going to make a run at him. He is one of the best coaches on the entire planet. We would have been complete idiots if we didn’t go after him attempting to utilize all of the things in play that made it at least within the realm of possiblity(alumnus and family settling in Raleigh).

So if Bill never had a press conference, then people still would have known that our offer to Cowher was turned down. There is simply no way to hide the fact that we were going to ask the guy to come be our coach nor should we be embarrassed about asking. We should be proud to have gone after Bill Cowher.

This guy Neinas has been turned into a super hero. I seriously doubt he had anything to do with the Cowher part of the search. Surely that was handled by folks at NC State other than Lee Fowler who were the ones putting up the $$$ in an attempt to lure Cowher to Raleigh.

I don’t know how the myth started that if you hire Neinas then nobody will ever find out what happened during your coaching search. He certainly can advise us on guys that are good fits and guys that are likely to seriously consider our job. Hopefully he will keep us away from the coaches like Brey, Lavin and Beilein in basketball. That was the part of the search where Fowler blew it in basketball.

I will be incredibly surprised if Dave Glenn won’t still have an article in the ACC Sports Journal telling us every step of our coaching search – just like he does for every coaching search that happens in the ACC.

  8. packk 11/30/2006 at 12:21 AM #

I think that BC is definitely a dream that I for one am holding on to. But, we will definitely have to see what unfolds. As to the crack on the AD, what do you expect him to do?? I am so sick of all the trash talk on Lee. It just makes us look bad. What does anyone honestly expect him to do in these circumstances??? How we can we ever look good if we don’t support our school in any fashion? Can we please stop the Fowler bashing??? We’ve gotten rid of 2 coaches, it happens, let’s move on.

  9. Dan 11/30/2006 at 12:22 AM #

So far this is bball search redux. What did we expect? The Director of Athletics is Fowler.

How do we get publicly turned down? My guess is Fowler thought that if he hired someone else without Cowher eliminating himself first, everyone would cry foul. The man is an idiot.

Coker won with someone else’s team. Coker is Tubby Smith without institutional control.

Johnson is too much of an unknown, Chow or Fisher and/or Fire Lee Fowler.

  10. packk 11/30/2006 at 12:26 AM #

Get over Lee Fowler being the be all end all of everything. He is NOT the sole CEO of this university. You have several other key players in the mix.

I don’t think that Cowher’s release was a turn down. I guess I am just playing the polly positive. He did not say NO like others have in the past. Thank goodness he spared us the embarassment.

  11. WestCoast 11/30/2006 at 1:27 AM #

I agree packk…this is in no shape or form the “bball search redux”. No one’s getting caught at RDU by surprise, no one’s told us “No” in public, and the media isn’t harping on the search as they did with the bball search. LF and the others powers at be are keeping this low pro, and for good reason.

  12. buttPACKer 11/30/2006 at 6:23 AM #

Well at some point cowher had to say he wasn’t interested. . . He was forced by the rampant speculation in pitt and elsewhere. besides, everyone knew from the outset it was probable no, but that it would have been stupid NOT to at least explore the possibility.

We have not lost any face regarding the BC situation, and he certainly can’t be blamed for something he would have had to at some point address!

  13. buttPACKer 11/30/2006 at 6:29 AM #

i agree that this whole OUT-doing UNC thing is BS, and really needs to stop!! they are one of 12 schools, 4 (well 3) in NC, and we have got to stop using BD as our personal measuring stick. WE WILL find a good coach, but in all likelihood he WILL NOT have BD’s resume. . .

  14. teacher 11/30/2006 at 6:32 AM #

“Coker won with someone else’s team. Coker is Tubby Smith without institutional control.”

Exactly! Coker came in a won a national title with BUTCH DAVIS’ players! What a coincidence! Since Coker’s recruits have filtered in at Miami, there has been a constant downward slide. It’s obvious that Coker cannot keep his team under control…we don’t need any more of that.

Is there any legitimacy behind the rumor that if Jimbo Fisher were to leave LSU that it is a good possibility he could bring Bo Pelini and others with him? I heard that, but I’m not sure how that buzz got started. That would be wonderful, but seems unlikely.

  15. teacher 11/30/2006 at 6:38 AM #

As for out-recruiting BD: the fact the we recruit a lot of the same players as UNX means that it does matter if we can out-recruit him. We at least need to stay respectable. We probably won’t get anyone with his resume, but they better be able to recruit their butts off. If we are wanting this coach to actually boost us into the upper level of the ACC, then recruiting will be the major tool in reaching that goal.

If we don’t care about recruiting, let’s get Jim Grobe! That guy could win with me at QB, and I’m extremely overweight!

  16. buttPACKer 11/30/2006 at 7:10 AM #

i say Jimbo Fisher, if Norm Chow goes to ASU.

  17. GAWolf 11/30/2006 at 7:55 AM #

Mr. O’s post above was just short of brilliant. I say just sort only because every single one of us outside if the boys of SFN are doing nothing but completely speculating here.

Don’t get your panties in a wad about Cowher. It had to be done and from what I have heard some major donors stepped up and made it VERY hard for him to say no….. DESPITE him coming here being a logistical nightmare due to to timing. We shouldn’t beat ourselves, or our powers that be, up for that move. He said no thanks, as ALL of us who stay relatively sober on a daily basis thought he would, and he turned us down publicly so we could move on with the search but by also saying he hadn’t been contacted thus saving much face for NCSU.

We’ll be alright. Let’s regroup and let Neinas do his thing before we bitch anymore. There are still TONS of prospects out there that will clearly put our program in a better posture to win next year over that which we had with the alternative.

  18. Packaholic1 11/30/2006 at 7:57 AM #

Lee Fowler: “But other than that, the biggest challenge? It’s probably the message boards on the Internet. There is so much negative stuff coming off the boards, and I think that drives the newspapers. Then the papers are constantly chasing stuff that’s being talked about on the Internet. But I think that’s the biggest challenge facing all ADs.

There are so many people on the Internet, and you never know who they are. You don’t know if they are affiliated with N.C. State in any way. It’s like an anonymous letter, and when I get an anonymous letter, I throw it in the trash. So, you write things that are just hateful to a lot of a people without any knowledge of what’s really going on.”

  19. sksr97 11/30/2006 at 8:04 AM #

I vote for Norm Chow. He has publically stated that NC STATE is one of two College jobs that he would take. The talks/deals should be in the works at the present moment!!!

  20. drhammondo 11/30/2006 at 8:04 AM #

What you all mean to say is that Coker is–dare I say it–Roy Williams! Oh that felt good to get off my chest!

  21. Rick 11/30/2006 at 8:08 AM #

If that is a quote from LF then he should be outright fired.

Is he so ignorant that he does not understand the internet is how people communicate now. It is the medium used to facilitate interaction.

That kind of stupidity is why we look so foolish in the media.

Do you think our fans are any worse than any other schools? Nope.
LF needs to learn how to cultivate the internet not run it down.
    What an incompetant boob.

  22. drhammondo 11/30/2006 at 8:11 AM #

Oh, and I’m definitely on the Chow or Jimbo Fischer bandwagon…

One thing about Chow – he’s going to be in it for 5 years MAX (he’s 60-years-old now). So one of his tasks will probably to be groom his replacement–therefore–I’m on the Chow AND Jimbo Fischer bandwagon!

  23. sksr97 11/30/2006 at 8:14 AM #

I think we can get 10 years out of Chow. He, as far as we know, is very healthy. I know we probably don’t want a coach at 80 years old but you see Bowden and Paterno still kicking it.

  24. Sam92 11/30/2006 at 8:15 AM #

interesting thought about Chow as a short-termer – stay on 3 or 4 years then retire, at which time maybe cowher is ready?

sounds good, but i don’t think it’s really wise to choose a head coach on that basis when the indications cowher is making now are “no interest”, seems like taking a risk with the program for a true crap shoot on cowher

i’d much rather put the thought into choosing someone with quality promise for a longer term – unfortunately I have no confidence in Lee Fowler to do that, but maybe the consultants they hired can do it
