More on the ESPN2 / Jimmy Dykes Bull*#&^ (Updated 3pm)

Before you read any further, you need to click on this entry that lays the groundwork for comments made here.

“Costner, who is 6’9 can shoot threes because he was recruited into Herb Sendek’s system.”

* ESPN color analyst, Jimmy Dykes commenting on the secret source of Brandon Costner’s abilities with approximately four minutes to go in the first half of NC State’s 74-67 win over Michigan on Monday night.

Now…we don’t really think that Jimmy Dykes truly believes that Brandon Costner can shoot well from the outside simply because the John Woodenesque Herb Sendek blessed Costner with recruitment. But, we do think that this quote crystalizes the central focus of where Dykes brain was all night while he called the Wolfpack’s big win over the Wolverines.

It was incessant. It was insulting. And it was ill-timed. And we deserve an apology.

Take for example the extremely ill-timed and inappropriate comments Dykes made with 3.3 seconds to go in the game and Sidney Lowe’s NC State Wolfpack celebrating its pending victory over Michigan. Again, the focus during this obvious time of celebration is on Herb f*ing Sendek and a criticism of NC State fans:

Well, they’ve got one of their own on the sidelines. That’s what these fans have wanted for years. Herb Sendek did nothing but win ballgames here but this fanbase was never happy with him. So he kind of rode that momentum out of town and they brought in Sidney Lowe.

What an appropriate time for such a tirade, don’t you think? Were the previous two hours of bashing not enough time for Dykes to get his uneducated and irrelevant opinion across?

It isn’t that we are just making a mountain out of a mole-hill. Dykes d&*# sucking of Sendek and criticism of NC State fans ran rampant all night in ESPN’s telecast. It was so obvious to everyone that watched the game that News & Observer even commented on the Sykes lunacy; SFN blogged it during the live broadcast; and hundreds of NC State fans made reference to the comments during the broadcast on various Wolfpack-centric websites. For example, look at the first comments from our friend at Section Six:

Does anyone have an estimate on the size of the stick that was up Jimmy Dykes’ ass tonight? I love how these national media guys have been all over us since Sendek left, even though they neither care enough nor are close enough to the situation to have even an inkling of what’s actually occurred. “In my opinion, they’re hard on their personnel here.” Oh, really, Jimmy? You’ve been in Raleigh for two days, but hey, staying at the Marriot sure puts you right on top things! This went beyond Herb Sendek. He was slamming us for firing Chuck Amato because Amato is an alumnus. Nevermind that we just finished a 3-9 season. I bet Dykes hasn’t seen more than three quarters of Wolfpack football over the last three seasons. He has no idea what we’ve dealt with.

If ESPN wants to talk so damn much about Herb Sendek then go televise and Arizona State game. That will do wonders for the ratings because the world is obviously in love with this guy. If not, shut the hell up and focus on the incredible job that Sidney Lowe is doing in Raleigh and move on!!

If you want to make your voice heard to ESPN, then we suggest that you click here and leave them some feedback on the broadcast.

We also suggest that you email Athletics Director, Lee Fowler and Sports Information Director Annabelle Vaughn Myers.

“Coach Fowler” has never been shy about taking it upon himself to call the media and voice his thoughts. We know for a fact that during Fowler’s first year on the job he called some newspaper reporters throughout the country to criticize them for running comments that Herb Sendek was on the hotseat in Raleigh. Heck, just a couple of months ago Fowler reprised his role (he must not have been very busy) and called ESPN’s Mark May to tell May that he was incorrect in his references that Chuck Amato was on the hotseat in Raleigh. (How did that brilliant move work out?).

Since Fowler has such a penchant to call the media to criticize them for criticizing “his” coaches…perhaps he can finally find the time to call the media to stand up for NC State fans!?

Wait a second…considering that the past five years of Fowler’s public criticism and name calling of the NC State fanbase planted the seeds and served to support the media’s criticism of our fans perhaps we should turn to a different spokesperson on the matter.

Postscript:
At least ONE of ESPN’s outlet’s decided to focus on the real stories of Monday night. If you have ESPN INsider then you can read Andy Katz’s comments by clicking here. SFN saw Katz walking around the RBC at halftime on Monday night. Just to wet your whistle:

But nothing Michigan did matched the hustle and intensity of NC State. For those who weren’t sure how Lowe would coach, you should know this: His players absolutely love him and would run through a brick wall for him.

Lord knows last night ESPN2 needed its own little Hans Brinker to stick his thumb in the Dykes to keep the idiocy from flooding out and drowning its credibility.

Anyone gotten a response back from ESPN yet? I haven’t. I don’t expect one, but would love to hear about it if by some miracle a response is provided to any of you.

  3. Texpack 11/28/2006 at 2:12 PM #

Interesting that they commented that V was looking down on Sidney Lowe last night and not Norm Sloan. After all, Sloan recruited him.

  4. skywalkerdt 11/28/2006 at 2:15 PM #

you can give them that because everyone remembers sid from the 83 team of coach V. would’ve been diff were towe the head coach.

The national media love Herb Sendek and dislike our fan base. I don’t know why, and I really don’t care, though I could make some guesses as to the former.

The best way to muzzle a fourth stringer like Dykes is to win. Then Dykes will be sent to cover games like, say, Arizona State versus NAU.

  6. foz 11/28/2006 at 2:20 PM #

It wasn’t just Dykes – at the half, after the comeback we made to take the lead, Digger could only praise Michigan. Guess it’s too much to ask these guys to prepare for any scenerio.

i got frustrated when they said that lowe had kept some of the elements of sendek’s system to try and coach to the talent. there’s a difference between that and giving guys the ability to play to their strengths.

  8. GAWolf 11/28/2006 at 2:30 PM #

Anyway Gannon can cover the rest of our games???

  9. GAWolf 11/28/2006 at 2:55 PM #

I laughed most at their assessment that the Princeton offense gave players the freedom they needed to “crash the boards.” That’s comical.

  10. GAWolf 11/28/2006 at 3:22 PM #

If y’all don’t recall, they seriously mentioned Coach Yow’s unfortunate battle with cancer in the same sentence. As if we actually had something to do with Yow having to battle cancer. Morons.

  11. beowolf 11/28/2006 at 3:22 PM #

Holy crap, he said that? That’s like saying the Princeton offense was especially attractive to 5-star PGs and Centers. ROTFLMAO.

  12. StateFans 11/28/2006 at 3:23 PM #

We covered this in last night’s Live Blogging thread as well.

(My last was referring to “their assessment that the Princeton offense gave players the freedom they needed to ‘rash the boards.’”)

^ So do Clay Aiken toilet seat doilies …

  16. GAWolf 11/28/2006 at 3:36 PM #

He said it, and sounded quite proud and sincere about the statement. It was at that point that my anger subsided a little as I realized those guys were nothing more than Sideshow Bobs. How those guys can call basketball and ex-players with actual knowledge of the game such as Gannon get sent to cover the Highland Games is beyond me.

Beowolf: If you didn’t catch the game on television, it can only be compared to Fred Williard’s Buck Laughlin (the Dog Show Commentator character) dropping lines such as:

    * Excuse me if this off the subject a little bit, but just take a guess at how much I can bench press. Come on, what do you think? Take a guess. 315 pounds, maxing out at 400!

    * Now tell me, which one of these dogs would you want to have as your wide receiver on your football team?

    * That looks like a fast dog.

    * Doctor, question that’s always bothered me and a lot of people: Mayflower, combined with Philadelphia – a no-brainer, right? Cause this is where the Mayflower landed. Not so. It turns out Columbus actually set foot somewhere down in the West Indies. Little known fact.

    * And to think that in some countries these dogs are eaten.

    * I went to one of those obedience places once… it was all going well until they spilled hot candle wax on my private parts.

    * I’d hate to go on a date with Judge Edie Franklin and have her judge me, that’d be no fun.

    * I don’t think I could ever get used to being poked and prodded. I told my proctologist one time, “Why don’t you take me out to dinner and a movie sometime?”

  18. GAWolf 11/28/2006 at 3:52 PM #

Sorry about busting up your parameters, SFN. I’m not the best with these here computers.

How many NCAA championships does Princeton have?

Why would anyone base an ACC offense on an Ivey league school?

  20. gumbydammit 11/28/2006 at 4:39 PM #

Jimmy is the one that gives dykes a bad reputation. Frigging moron.

How do you get a job as a sports writer or commentator, anyway? Take an IQ test and fail it?

  21. MadWolf92 11/28/2006 at 4:41 PM #

^ Ugh. The same pathetic arguments exist post-mortem.

  22. Clarksa 11/28/2006 at 4:55 PM #

Jimmy “Dykes?” “Butch” Davis? I smell conspiracy….

  23. Great Dane Guy 11/28/2006 at 6:06 PM #

I sent ESPN a little note.

  24. NappyWolf 11/28/2006 at 7:14 PM #

Maybe Jimmy should check this out:

and tell us if he thinks Herb is still such a class act.

I swear Dykes got so wrapped up in his tirade about the fans that he almost insinuated that the fans were responsible for Coach Yow taking a leave of absense. He was going on and on how the fans were tough on the coaches than started listing the coaches as examples: Sendek, Amato, Yow…

He than back tracked, extremely ackwardly I might add, that she had taken a leave due to cancer.

God Bless Coach Yow and hopefully she will be able to kick the cancer this time for good. :/
