He’s Baaack; Fowler in (at least) 3 Papers in 2 Days

Lee

If you searched the last two years of entries on SFN for “Lee Fowler” you would find at least a dozen entries where we took time time to highlight (and criticize) the most interviewed Athletics Director in America. Not that those were the only times that we could have commented on Loudmouth Lee’s media appearances, but those were just the ones that we chose to highlight.

Fowler and his “Q&As” and interviews have become great comedy for Wolfpackers through the years. Many fans have learned that even when Fowler has nothing to say about NC State he will comment on something to get into a newspaper. For example, last year there was the N&O’s “you ain’t seen nothing yet” article in the Life section of the paper about late bloomers that Fowler proudly interviewed for. And this summer we had this entry when old “Coach” Fowler decided to be the only local AD talking about an issue that the conference commissioner wouldn’t even discuss.

Well…after taking it slow with the media after proudly boasting that he lost 25 stress-related pounds because he couldn’t hand his responsibilities as AD to hire a basketball coach…everyone’s favorite AD BACK with a vengence! (Back in the media, that is) It must be a seasonal thing because just about this time last year we were comparing the disproportinate Lee Fowler’s media

Earlier in the week we highlighted recent comments from “Coach” Fowler (as he likes to be called within the Athletics Department) in the Fayetteville Observer. No big deal. Understandable comments as the Fayetteville Observer is running a fantastic series on NC State Basketball right now. Unfortunately, it appears that LF’s comments cranked his engine from 1st gear to 5th gear and we are now in the midst of an all out Fowler media blitz. God help us all.

Today, good old Lee found himself in at least two different newspapers discussing two different topics!! Get ready everyone.

First, check out today’s USA Today’s profile of Bob Huggins return to coaching at Kansas State in this link. What does Bob Huggins and K-State have to do with Lee Fowler? We asked the same question of ourselves. But, has relevancy or discretion ever kept old Lee’s mouth from running? Especially when the reporter on the line is from a NATIONAL newspaper?

No one is suggesting Huggins broke or even bent the rules, and in a recent interview with The Kansas City (Mo.) Star, Huggins would not admit to active recruiting.

But North Carolina State athletics director Lee Fowler, who heads the NCAA’s Basketball Issues Committee, says the recruiting loophole he might have exploited likely will come up for discussion.

“You would think it crosses the line of ethical behavior,” Fowler says, adding he heard of Huggins’ activities from the N.C. State staff. “I’m not saying he did it. I’m just saying that somebody who’s been in the business a long time, gets out for a year and recruits while he was out knowing he was going to get back in, it seems to me it’s not a level playing field by any means.”

Holy crap! How f*#&@-up is it that a former assistant coach on one of the most corrupt staffs in basketball history – Lee Fowler at Memphis State University in the early/mid 1980s – sits on top of the basketball issues committee and dares to hypocritically publicly criticize another coach’s ethics?

Poor Sidney Lowe. As NC State’s new coach tries to build credibility and earn acceptance into the college coaching fraternity, the professional equivalent of his daddy is running his mouth to a national newspaper (in an article designed to criticize another coach) that Sidney has tattled on Bob Huggins. That will go a long way to acceptance!!

We have commented so much on this previous stuff that it leaves us too tired to comment on the N&O’s comments from Fowler today in this article. We will leave comments on the N&O’s article to you all and will elevate some of the best comments up to the entry for archival.

I’d bet anything Fowler is talking about Sendek’s staff, not Lowe’s, when he says “he heard of Huggins’ activities from the N.C. State staff.”

  2. redfred2 11/07/2006 at 5:51 PM #

Are you sure that wasn’t something below that like…”Fowler late rescended his earlier….

Anybody remember my Boy Scout post a while back?

“Well, they asked me, and I,…I… UH, what’d you expect me to do, tell a lie? Nosiree, not me, you can’t make me, you can’t me, you can’t make me…”

No we didn’t want you to lie Lee, how about just some thought on the implications of your words beforehand. Or a sock.

  3. choppack1 11/07/2006 at 5:52 PM #

I agree Trout – but still, Fowler shouldn’t say anything accept something like “It was common knowlege” or better yet, say nothing at all.

Hopefully this moron won’t get to do both HC searches for our revenue producing sports this year. Hey Lee, have done any research to see if Butch Davis is recruiting now?

  4. redfred2 11/07/2006 at 5:54 PM #

Just like the “we need to embrace our past” quote earlier.

Does the guy even think about the past or the future, or he just so caught up in the moment, every moment of his life?

  5. packpigskinfan23 11/07/2006 at 6:05 PM #

well well well… I can see why Fowler and Amato get along so well.

anyways this is off topic a bit, but I am proud and have to brag a bit. I recieved my acceptance letter today to NC State, so I am now offically a WolfPacker!!!!!!!

    =)

Lee please do us all a favor, yourself included, and please just shut up! By now we all know you are a basketball expert, TV star and etc. etc. etc.

  7. redfred2 11/07/2006 at 6:36 PM #

    :-),;-)

    Congratulations there packpigskinfan23

Might I suggest some type of sports management or administration as a field of study. Pays well, anybody can do it, and several positions should be available at several locations in the triangle just shortly.

You gotta think ahead young man.

Wait a minute, if you can do that, you’re already over qualified for the position. You’ll probably have to settle lesser paying job. Sorry.

  8. WolfPup35 11/07/2006 at 7:12 PM #

I also send my congratulations!! If Fowler doesn’t shut up, he’s gonna end up attracting the wrong kind of attention from the NCAA! They may think that because of the past with this guy, maybe we should take a closer look at where he is now!! That distinction has historically been reserved for the schools of the SEC, let’s not steal any of their thunder, ok, LEE?!? Anyhow, GO PACK!!

  9. Woof Wolf 11/07/2006 at 7:35 PM #

    Congratulations, packpigskinfan23. Welcome aboard.

In case Lee checks in on “the Internet squawk” the correct answers to USA Today were, “Yes, I’ve heard some talk. Yes, I’m sure the committee will discuss it. NO COMMENT, NO COMMENT. Wow the weather is nice down here today. I think I’ll go play golf.”

    DAMN! DAMN!! DAMN!!!

In the n & o: LF said, “Recruiting is going well.”

CTC said, “Right now, we’re in the process of having an awfully good recruiting class, with or without a bowl.”

Unless someone out there knows something I don’t, they are either doing a good job of hiding their successes or they are blowing smoke. Scout has us ranked at 42; Rivals at 52. That’s a lot closer to awful than it is to “awfully good.” But as good a job as they have done at everything else, I’m sure they will come through.

I pledged ten months ago that NCSU can just do without my (meager) contributions as long as that lunkhead is on the payroll! Nothing’s changed today!

  11. vtpackfan 11/07/2006 at 9:25 PM #

Whether he implecated our current Basketball staff or latter is moot. He is our AD, so he represents all staff throughout his tenure. The point is either he doesn’t care or is so truthful and honest that nothing is on a need to know basis. Anyways, its a hill of beans since no one cares about NCAA Basketball issues since they never get around to actual doing the things they do so much talking about. Currently cracking down on diploma mill schools, but this has been known for a long period of time.

“Common knowledge” would have been the more appropriate source of the information Lee, not to mention, a more professional answer. Obviously, LLF has difficulty thinking before speaking, or just has difficulty thinking in general.

The gravity of his comments aren’t as debtremental as I initially thought they were going to be when I saw Bob Huggin’s name. I, at first, thought he was going to say, “Oh, we wiffed on him too!”

  13. cfpack03 11/08/2006 at 11:13 AM #

IMO, the N&O was a needed piece to curb talk about Amato’s job. No gripes here

  14. 66pack 11/08/2006 at 12:07 PM #

give LF a break.he is trying to divert attention from unc ch fb coach search.so far there is quite a contrast between their search and state’s search.

  15. packpigskinfan23 11/08/2006 at 12:24 PM #

^OR he COULD be giving UNC a GREAT idea on what they should do with their new FB coach!!!!!

Fowler dosnt think. I think RedFred had it right. If only I could take over his job……

    jk.

please no one take that seriously.

  16. redfred2 11/08/2006 at 12:25 PM #

cfpack03: Good article! I had skipped it earlier, thanks for pointing it out.

I want to jump and say GO CHUCK, but the play on the field has created it’s own skepticism, and for good reason. I would say that it is fair considering. But either way, it’s hard to turn that tide once it has become engrained due to constant unexplainable events, that culminate in dissappointing games/seasons, one right after another.

There hasn’t been any evidence of a gradual climb, in my mind anyway. Reaching the peak for a week or two, only to fall back down to the bottom and stay there, doesn’t appear to be overall progress.

I’m still pulling for Amato and I hope the PACK wins Saturday, but I don’t think I’ll be able to prevent myself from questioning how, and why now, if they do. The answers to those questions may be great coaching and preparation, but no one will acknowledge that fully. And that my friend, is the dilemma this coaching staff has created for it’s ownself.

  17. packbackr04 11/08/2006 at 12:31 PM #

Sid, take SFNs advice and hire yourself a PR person to spin and deflect this kind of attention away from you and your program. Fowler is an idiot. please resign Lee, please.

  18. nsj 11/08/2006 at 12:59 PM #

Somewhat off-topic, but it’s been confirmed that “Coach” did something right — or at least tried to:

    Link to article

    From
“Hoosiers’ Daddy?: The A&M men’s and women’s basketball teams kickoff (sorry) their season on Friday night at Reed Arena. Both are ranked in the top 25.

And talk about loyalty, Aggies: Word is traditional power Indiana, in searching for a basketball coach last off-season, came knocking on A&M men’s coach Billy Gillispie’s door for at least an interview. Not once but twice.

Gillispie, in receiving reassurances about upgrades to Reed, didn’t answer. Twice. He also turned away a persistent if not downright pushy North Carolina State. Gillispie, a native Texan, believes A&M’s got what it takes to someday (and maybe soon) play for the national title. “

  19. redfred2 11/08/2006 at 2:15 PM #

    nsj

I could read into that in so many ways with a rant that would go on for so long, that no one would want to hear it.

Let’s give him credit for trying anyway though.

  20. nsj 11/08/2006 at 3:25 PM #

    Red,

If it were from somewhere local, that’s one thing, but this is from a Texas newspaper with nothing to gain from pumping sunshine on Fowler’s behalf.

Gillispie got some attention from a number of programs at the end of last season, but only now are we learning about some of these inquries.

What we do know is that Gillispie got a contract extension with increased compensation and some big-time improvements to Reed Arena that were not going to happen a year ago. Whether the public knew it at the time or not, it’s obvious that A&M recongized they have a good thing going and that others were making some serious offers to take that good thing away. (This point is even more clear when you cast it against the fact that A&M is and always has been a football school. That they made some of these additional investments in another sport speaks volumes.)

Of course, how “persistent” and “pushy” in this article translates into what actually happened on the ground, we’ll never know. Apparently, Murphy never flew his plane to College Station for a midnight rendezvous… but that doesn’t mean phone calls weren’t made directly or indirectly to Gillispie on Fowler’s behalf.

I’m not making a statement overall on Fowler or anything else — just shedding some additional light on one aspect of Fowler’s tenure, especially in light of comments made on this fine site.

  21. Pack1969E 11/08/2006 at 7:59 PM #

Looks like the Heels got Davis. Will someone whisper in LF’s ear “get Wolfpack FB a winner or get out…” Been following our program since 1952, and we just can not build a winning program and sustain a winning tradition. Case brought BB to NC and set the bar. Someone got complacent and we saw the rest of the ACC catch us and then pass us. Sid will surely move BB up, but it looks as though it will take another Fox type and an AD to advance FB, and then sustain winning programs.

  22. redfred2 11/08/2006 at 9:01 PM #

    Pack1969E

They cannot maintain, I agree. If even the slightest hint of impropriety comes their way, they shrivel up and die. Does anyone ever notice that unsuccessful programs don’t have to deal with the NCAA’s scrutiny too often? It’s only once someone appears threatening to another program, that the inuendos start to fly. Some universities hire specific personnel capable of handling it and standing up for their own interest, always have, always will. Some don’t.

Hence, the folding of a program on the verge of becoming what it once was some years back, followed by a decade and a half of non-threatening basketball. It’s just simplier for the administration that way.

  23. highstick 11/08/2006 at 9:27 PM #

Somebody’s got to clarify this “Fox thing” for me. My understanding was she was the one who torpedoed Sendek getting fired several years ago. My source was an N&O sportswriter(I’ll not mention name, but CT are his initials). Was he wrong? If so, what good is getting another Fox type? If she blocked firing him, she is as much at fault as Foulup!

  24. highstick 11/08/2006 at 9:28 PM #

By the way, Foulup has been back in the Charlotte Obs. supporting Chuck again and pointing to the slim point spreads. The article doesn’t mention the Division II loses. We don’t deserve a bowl game playing like this.
