BBall Recruiting Analysis: State Lands Point Guard (Updated 11am)

Head Coach Sidney Lowe and N.C. State received a basketball commitment from 6-foot-1 point guard Julius Mays, a highly rated junior from Marion, Ind.

Mays, who was being recruited by several Big Ten schools, informed Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe and his staff Thursday he planned to play for the Pack. Mays won’t be the first point guard to come to NCSU from Marion. Wolfpack assistant coach Monte Towe, the star point guard on the 1974 NCAA champions, also is from Marion.

Mays is about to begin his junior season, so it is hard to know very much about him as most basketball recruiting rankings don’t really start to take form until the junior year. Mays averaged 17 points a game as a sophomore in a strong Indiana High School Basketball program. He is expected to be listed as one of the dozen best high school basketball players in the talent-rich state. SFN’s ‘choppack’ was kind enough to share some information/comments about Mays in about the 8th or 9th comment included below this entry.

With transfer Farnold Degand also on the Wolfpack’s roster, the Pack now projects two have athletic ‘combo’ guards that can fill time it either position in the backcourt if needed. We think that Mays is projected to ultimately be a pure point guard; he is currently listed at six feet one inches and 170 pounds and is projected to grow some more.

The following is a projected roster for the Wolfpack’s Basketball program in the coming years. Below the roster are comments and analysis. For the sake of discussion, we are taking the liberty to project some commitments as placeholders for scholarships. The positions listed beside the players are their natural positions; certain players could fill in at other positions if needed.

Projected 2007-2008 NC State Basketball Roster

Senior Class
(1) Gavin Grant (2G/3F)

Junior Class
(2) Courtney Fells (2G)
(3) Ben McCauley (4F/5C)

Sophomore Class
(4) Brandon Costner (3F/4F)
(5) Trevor Ferguson (2G)
(6) Dennis Horner (4F/3F)
(7) Farnold Degand (1PG)
(8) Bartosz Lewandowski (5C)

Freshman Class
(9) Johnny Thomas (3F)
(10) JJ Hickson (5C/4F)
(11) Open (SFN: Projected Tracy Smith (4F))

HS Senior Commits
(12) Julius Mays (PG)
(13) Open (SFN: Projected CJ Williams (3F))
(1) Gavin Grant’s old scholarships Open (SFN: Projected Top 100 Post player)

* 4-star power forward and one of the country’s Top 50 recruits – Tracy Smith – has announced that he has academically qualified with strong SAT scores. Smith is thought to be a heavy lean to the Wolfpack and we therefore have projected him into State’s 11th scholarship.

* Many rumors have swirled on the internet that a very highly ranked potential “mystery recruit” for the Wolfpack in the class of 2007. We have not shared any comments about this recruit(s). What we will share is that IF the Wolfpack can land either (or both) of the two potential (longshot) names that we have heard, then we fully expect the Pack to allocate scholarships to these players. This is a slam dunk decision.

* We think that the NC State coaching staff believes that Farnold Degand will be more than serviceable to run the point next season in light of the amount of versatile offensive talent that the Pack will be able to put on the floor in names like- Fells, Grant, Costner, Hickson, McCauley, Horner, (hopefully) Smith.

* Based on (1) Farnold Degand’s presence/ability to handle the ball next year after Engin Atsur leaves, (2) the in-roads that Coach Lowe is making with prospects in the class of 2008 and (3) the commitment from Julius Mays…we project that the Wolfpack will try to sign Tracy Smith with the third scholarship in the class of 2007 and then close the book on the class (unless we land a Top 30 “Mystery Recruit”).

* Chris Warren, a 5-11, 165-pound point guard in the class of 2007 visited NC State recently. Warren was an option that the staff was considering for future point guard needs and ultimately chose to pass. (With Mays commitment, that becomes more clear). Warren is one of those situations where so many people on the internet prove that they simply don’t listen. We say posts on some message boards asking why State had ‘rescinded’ Warren’s offer…and proclamations that State should jump all over the short point guard with a valuable scholarship. Not that it will make one ounce of difference, but people who don’t know what they are talking about should not speak.

* As we hypothetically look to the future recognizing that many of these comments are speculative, the primary gap that may otentially arise in the future of the program (’09, ’10. ’11) is a little bit of a deficiency in pure outside shooting. If recruiting efforts ulitimately comprised a roster similar to what we have projected, the one future need that State may need in the class of ’08 or ’09 is a stud shooting guard; we’re talking more of a Rodney Monroe shooter than a Gavin Grant ‘versatile’. We have all the faith in the world that Courtney Fells is going to be a monster at the 2G in the coming years, but the need for appropriate talent behind Fells in future recruiting classes is something on which we will keep our eye.

woa!!!!! out of nowhere sid lands a lunker! this is great news. dont know much about the kid, but sounds like sid is ripping it up!

  2. StateFans 10/27/2006 at 9:49 AM #

^ Kid hasn’t played his junior year yet, so it is hard to know much about him. But, he averaged 17 points a game as a sophomore in Indiana High School Basketball. Whoa!

  3. GoldenChain 10/27/2006 at 10:14 AM #

Maybe this had something to do with it:

“Mays won’t be the first point guard to come to NCSU from Marion. Wolfpack assistant coach Monte Towe, the star point guard on the 1974 NCAA champions, also is from Marion.”

  4. packbackr04 10/27/2006 at 10:17 AM #

17 PTS a game in any year is nothing to sneeze at.

  5. RAWFS 10/27/2006 at 10:21 AM #

Lee Fowler said in an interview recently that State should be receiving commitments from some highly rated players in the next couple of weeks. That was after JJ Hickson’s announcement.

Things seem to be going very well on the recruiting front for the Wolfpack and that can only mean that this year and maybe next are a lull, not the end of the program as some certain CBS Sportsline jack-ace columnists wrote last spring.

The only question in my mind now about The Sid is how good a game-coach he’ll be. If the guy can follow in the footsteps of Valvano and make quick effective in-game adjustments, I think that we’re back in the saddle again.

  6. choppack1 10/27/2006 at 10:23 AM #

I think one of the key things to note is that this kid evidently “blew up” at some Pittsburgh b’ball classic. He was being recruited by Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State and Xavier. Why is the relevant – they’re in the neighborhood. Even more important, Monte Towe scouted this kid and liked his game.

    Being that he’s just a junior and he’s 6-1 – 170 – he’s pretty well put together too.

  7. choppack1 10/27/2006 at 10:26 AM #

RAWFS – I actually don’t worry about that as much as I worry about the other things. He’s a former point guard, and he has a certain charisma about him – I expect his prescence to inspire more confidence than his predecessor.

As for the adjustments – I only think there are a handful of coaches who are really good at that. (I don’t think Coach K is – and I don’t see a lot of evidence that Roy is either.) A coach should try some different stuff out and if it works, stick w/ it. I expect Sidney will do that (another difference in his predecessor.)

  8. highstick 10/27/2006 at 10:29 AM #

Choppack, what do you mean about “blew up”????

    Way to go, Monte!!

  9. BJD95 10/27/2006 at 10:31 AM #

Sounds like this kid could grow a few more inches, in which case he could be a veritable beast. I have always said that Sid’s 3rd team should be the one to watch, and the 2008-09 squad is shaping up to be quite intriguing, provided that Hickson is not “one and done.” Combine this kid with an experienced Degand and maybe Ferguson, and good things could really happen.

Here’s a summary of some comments on the “other board”:

“Julius Mays of Marion, Indiana really blew up onto the national radar this April when he took over at the Pittsburgh Jam Fest. Now Mays is spending the early part of the school year working out, and focusing on the upcoming season. With his considerable talent, Mays attracted quite a crowd for his workouts. ”

“more reporting from the Pittsburgh Jam Fest

Julius Mays: Simply put, Mays was amazing. There is simply nothing the 6-foot-1 point guard from Marion, Indiana didn’t do. He shot it well, he passed it well, and he played good defense. Mays is not the most physically imposing guard, and he won’t blow anyone away with his athleticism, but he is a basketball player. It is only a matter of time until he explodes onto the national scene. ”

“I heard Dave Telep talking about this kid. He said he was really moving up the charts.”

I *hope* that Sid is (and is going to be) a good talent evaluator, but I’m not going to bust out the told-you-so’s just yet. There’s a *lot* of time between this commitment and his debut in the Red and White starting lineup.

Things are looking good *so far*.

  12. Lock 10/27/2006 at 10:55 AM #

Excellent excellent excellent. I can only say, please let such posts continue.

I think the one thing you can develop the most is shooting.
It is simply form + practice. Anyone can shoot if they really want to.

I am excited about how well our recruiting seems to be going. We are getting actual PGs and Cs instead of 6’7″ positionless players.
My biggest concern with Sid was how well he took to recruiting. I think he got the perfect staff to help him with this.

  14. RAWFS 10/27/2006 at 11:04 AM #

Chop, Valvano was a great in-game adjustor. That’s why I have hopes for Sidney.

It would entertain me to no end to see the Box And 1 or the Triangle and Two again. Good times, watching those D’s.

  15. ShootingGuard 10/27/2006 at 11:37 AM #

You have to be impressed with Sid’s recruiting efforts so far as, except for Chris Wright (which was a drama beyond Sid’s control), the staff is literally getting the guys it chooses to go after, and they are also (thankfully) not selling out the long-term by giving out schollies to just anybody now but are instead leaving room to build on in 2008 and beyond…

I have to agree big time with SFN’s analysis that we need to sign a deadly shooter sometime soon. Not a set shooter or a guy that can make a few 3’s here and there but a CREATE HIS OWN SHOT…GO-TO GUY…that GETS HOT & LIGHTS IT UP IN THE DEFENDER’S FACE…NO MATTER WHAT TYPE OF DEFENSE IS BEING PLAYED kind of guy.

While a guy like Rodney Monroe only comes along every once in a while, it has been a LONG time since he came along, and we really haven’t had a guy whose shooting the other team really feared since CC Harrison, a poor man’s version of Rodney Monroe. UConn, Arizona, and plenty of other great programs have had their versions over the years, and we need to add the same if we are going to compete with those guys and be a team that BLOWS other teams out rather than grinding out the wins we get as was the case with Herbie’s “versatile positionless” guys and set shooters…

  16. Trout 10/27/2006 at 11:42 AM #

” I have always said that Sid’s 3rd team should be the one to watch”

I agree. Could be surprises, but I think it will go like this:

Year 1: Losing ACC record, bubble NIT team
Year 2: Around a .500 record, bubble NCAA team
Year 3: Upper ACC finish, definate NCAA team

  17. BJD95 10/27/2006 at 11:44 AM #

Does RM have any progeny yet? If not, we need to get him propogating, stat.

  18. ShootingGuard 10/27/2006 at 11:51 AM #

“I think the one thing you can develop the most is shooting.
It is simply form + practice. Anyone can shoot if they really want to.”

Oops, just saw this and really have to disagree here.

Sure, ABOUT anyone with college level talent can get the form down and, with enough set-up time, knock down wide open shots with some regularity. But, that’s not what SFN nor I are talking about with regard to needing a “pure” shooting guard…

You don’t teach what Rodney Monroe had or even Randolph Childress or guys like Ben Gordon or even JJ Reddick. They have/had something you can’t teach…whether it is confidence or simply knack or whatever…God could have come down and taught Ilian Evtimov to shoot mechanically, but he would never have been able to create his own shot or shoot in someone’s face like Rodney Monroe or come off the curl like JJ Reddick and bomb from halfcourt or get hot and just bomb, bomb, bomb despite the other team’s frail attempts to stop him…

And, sure, those guys are legends, but there are plenty of poor man versions out there that have made big differences in other programs’ successes from Jason Jay Williams to Juan Dixon to even Justin Gray and maybe even Anthony Morrow will be another…We just haven’t signed one since CC Harrison sadly…And the end game struggles and lack of blowouts show in our results as we haven’t had anyone that could consistently deliver the backbreaking DAGGER shots that good teams with those types of players do…

“Does RM have any progeny yet? If not, we need to get him propogating, stat.”

I must say I’ve never laughed so hard reading this blog as I did reading that! I agree!

  20. Gene 10/27/2006 at 12:12 PM #

Isn’t Horner supposed to be a good perimeter shooter? I think, from reading the summary of the Red-White game, Ferguson might have a decent perimeter game too. I think we’ll still have some decent three point shooters, in a couple of years.

SFN: What you say about Horner and Ferguson is true….but, is very different from what we are talking about. Horner and Ferguson may be specialized role players with the ability to shoot in the future. But, we are talking about an all-around player that is a go-to guy with a shot. Shooting Guard’s comments on the topic are perfect! We’re talking about a Monroe, Childress, Ray Allen, Johnny Dawkins, William Avery, JJ Reddick, Donald Williams, Rashad McCants, Ben Gordon, Richard Jefferson, Gilbert Arenas, Francisco Garcia, Reggie Miller, Dennis Scott, BJ Elder…even Dereck Whittenburg-type player

  21. one00_proof 10/27/2006 at 12:19 PM #

jbwbubba: What I can say is that the two “mystery” recruits are very highly touted, and as SFN implied, it would be a slam dunk if we can get these two. The reason for the mystery of one of them is because one is already committed to another school and for the purpose of not “throwing gasoline on a lighted match”, it’s best to keep him anonymous for now. The other one however is not committed though is still flying under the radar.

Let’s just say if we can get either, or if I dare say, both these guys, State’s 2007 recruiting class would easily be a top 10 or even top 5 in the nation.

SFN: Damn, you are good!!! Please post more often!! Thanks for the comments.

Our bball recruiting seems to be amazing lately. I am really excited. But I have a couple of questions about it, maybe someone can help…

How is it that we have been able to recruit so well, what seems right out of the gate? Are our coaches really that dynamic, or is it the potential playing time, or something(s) else?

What happens to a guy like Green, who doesnt seem like he will get a scholarship?

  23. ncsu96 10/27/2006 at 12:35 PM #

    SFN thanks update.

Seriously, Sid and staff have blown us away with their recruiting..Wow!!

I can’t wait to see us play even though we’re obviously undermanned this year. As far as in-game coaching, remember we have 3(!) guys with head coaching on our bench, and Larry Harris is only one who doesn’t. I can’t see many staff’s being able to scout or do better game preparation.

  24. one00_proof 10/27/2006 at 1:17 PM #

A small update per rivals.com that will definately strike a chord here. If anyone is in the know about bball recruiting, everyone surely heard that Rico Picket (4-star #48 PG per rivals) has decommitted from Alabama. Many State fans thought we should jump on this kid immediately but with the recent developments of Warren, Mays, and the mystery recruit(s), many were content with just dreamin it up. Well, it seems Pickett has just released a “final four” and guess whose in it (Bama, FSU, Ill, NCSU). It seems Lowe and co. jumped right on Pickett the second he decommitted and I honestly think we have a very “solid but long” shot at him.

He is still high on Bama mind you but we know the history that if a kid decommits from a school, he very rarely “recommits”. Illinois has also recruited another PG in the class of 2007 by the name of Demetri McCamey (4-star #57 per rivals) so Pickett might not be up for sharing. And FSU… well nuff said, hot girls and Bobby Bowden.

While I honestly believe that his heart is still with Bama, if Lowe makes a solid push on this kid and gets him to visit, watch out! We might forget that whole fiasco with Wright in the blink of an eye.

Doesn’t have to be SG, just someone who can take over a game, in my opinion. Centers, like Boozer or Montross, who were almost automatic, when they caught the ball might be just as effective. Or a well rounded PF, like Gugliatta.

SFN: No. Totally disagree. In fact…the point IS completely about the position needing to be a shooting guard. That position gets the ball in their hands more than the others. Additionally, we already have guys that project to be strong offensive weapons in those other positions – like JJ Hickson, Gavin Grant, Brandon Costner and maybe Tracey. The point is that we need that kind of ‘go to’ guy at the 2G position.
