Tarheel Football Search Very Relevant to State

The UNC-Chapel Hill coaching search has the potential to be very interesting. It also has the potential to be very boring. Regardless of the amount of public fireworks that the search creates, NC State fans need to be very clear on the fact that Carolina’s search for a football coach is extremely relevant to Chuck Amato and NC State’s football program.

I saw a quote on an NC State message board yesterday that made one of those matter-of-fact, overly-confident, sound-byte-like statement that went something like, “We don’t need to worry about Carolina. We need to worry about Florida State and Virginia Tech. We compete with these programs for where we want to be.”

I just couldn’t believe the supidity. How the hell are we supposed to try to compete with the top programs in the ACC and country without top players? How does someone who can type not inherently understand this from the beginning? The better Carolina’s coach, then the better Carolina’s program becomes. The better Carolina’s program, then the more talent they can lure and the more effective that their talent will be used on the field. It isn’t really rocket science.

The barriers to success faced by local football programs are large enough on their own without adding a better coach to the mix. These issues have been well chronicled in the past – there just aren’t enough local players available to support our programs; so, the better the alternative programs become, the more difficult State’s mission of winning becomes. Dave Glenn’s research shows:

Here’s the breakdown of how many Division I-A signees the traditional ACC states produce on an annual basis, relative to the number of I-A programs in the state: Georgia 75 (150 signees, two teams) prospects per school, Florida 50 (350/7), Virginia 25 (50/2), Maryland 20 (40/2), South Carolina 20 (40/2), North Carolina 12 (60/5). Here’s the breakdown when you limit the same numbers to only BCS-conference teams: Florida 87 (350/4) per school, Georgia 75 (150/2), Maryland 40 (40/1), Virginia 25 (50/2), South Carolina 20 (40/2), North Carolina 15 (60/4).

Think about it this way — if Carolina was coached by someone other than Carl Torbush and John Bunting the last nine years, then there is chance that players like Levar Fisher, Bryan Peterson, Mario Williams, Manny Lawson, AJ Davis, Scott Kooistra, Sean Locklear, TA McLendon, Tank Tyler, Toney Baker, Andre Brown, Leroy Harris, Curtis Crouch and dozens of others could have never worn an NC State uniform. Exactly how is NC State supposed to compete with FSU and VPI…or anyone for that matter…without that caliber of player?

I was going to more develop these thoughts more deeply here today, but as I was surfing the internet this morning I saw where the Red & White From State had done such an excellent job developing the points that it makes much more sense for me to direct you to their great comments.

NC State fans should be watching the events unfolding within the Carolina football program closely. Not only could the fortunes of UNC football drastically change with the right new coach, but it could also affect the Wolfpack too, and in some unpleasant ways.

By any measure, the Wolfpack has been a mediocre football program since the graduation of Philip Rivers. State has gone an unremarkable 15-15 in that time, with an ACC record of eight wins against twelve losses.* Several of the wins Amato has posted were against inferior 1-AA or non-BCS competition, which effectively should remove those victories from serious consideration when pondering the arc of the Amato-led program. In short, a program once labeled as “on the rise? has not only stopped rising, it is clearly treading water in the record books.

So what does UNC have to do with any of this? Aside from contributing two of those losses in the post-Rivers era, UNC is also a close neighbor school that often competes for the same players as does NC State. Division 1 college football, more than any of the major college sports, relies on in-state or regional talent as its lifeblood. Only certain schools can recruit nationally, and those schools are the elite in the game: Notre Dame, Southern Cal, a few others. For the NC States and the UNCs of the world, they live and die by the commitments they gain from players who grew up relatively near the schools. That in mind, a coaching change at UNC can indeed affect NC State’s fortunes, which in the post-Rivers era are markedly spotty at best.

State is, of course, an excellent choice in its own right and offers many of the same positives that UNC does. It also has one thing that Carolina cannot currently offer, and that is a large amount of fan support for the football program. Amato does (and should) proudly point to the people in grandstands as being largely responsible for many of the enhancements the stadium has undergone the past five years. They put their money where their mouths are, and bought into the dream of a first-class football program – to the tune of perhaps $25,000,000, collectively. Those fans show up every week and display and incredible amount of very loud passion for their team. Some may say that Wolfpack fans are over-demanding, but the reality of that is that State’s fans want best efforts and are loathe to settle for anything less. Amato can and should point that out to high schoolers, and they can see this for themselves in Raleigh on official visits.

Just for the reason of recruiting alone, it’s going to get very interesting around here soon, and what happens in Chapel Hill may go a long way to determining what happens here in Raleigh. So keep your eye on what goes on in Chapel Hill.

Please keep this entry in mind when you log onto SFN in the future and see us talking about Carolina a little more than we have in the past.

I will leave you with a related entry from 850TheBuzz’ titled Strange Days in Chapel Hill. The article is a hub for some of the best, relevant links out there today.

I couldn’t agree more. Let’s not forget how the last UNC coach impacted our b’ball program. When we stopped sweeping the Heels and they started sweeping us and winning National Championships, well it pushed some folks over the edge.

Everything in life is relative. You’re fine driving around a nice Sedan until your neighbor shows up w/ a Porsche. Put it this way – if UNC’s new coach comes in and sets the world on fire and they do something like win the conference or play in the conference game championship and Amato has another 3-5/4-4 conference record, a lot of the enthusiasm and forgiveness we’ve seen over the last few years may disappear.

I personally thought that Bunting would have been given a chance to at least finish .500 in the conference again given the recruiting class he had, but I guess the UVa game was the last straw. Give them credit for saying, sorry John, even that’s not good enough. However, the question does linger, do the majority of Tarheel “fans” – students, alumni, and other supporters (of various passion for the Heels) – care about North Carolina football and about a game that often ends in heartbreak?

I think with the right coach UNC go fly right by us on the radar. They have the name brand that we so badly lack. Bunting had some talent he just never produced…sound familar??

  3. Mr O 10/24/2006 at 11:55 AM #

Bunting hasn’t even been close at UNC. 1 winning season after what will be his 7th season isn’t going to save any coach at UNC or NC State no matter how good his recruiting class will be.

This should be a very interesting coaching search to follow.

SFN: This will be his 6th season. Not his 7th.

2-3 vs this horrible coach. Yes I dread to see what Amato would do against a real coach. And I dread to see what he’ll do with less talent than what he has. So if Mario Williams doesn’t come to NCSU, what do we miss? Not going to the Car bowl last year and having the number 1 draft pick who get’s made fun of? Amato has had a lot of talent but the results don’t show it. We aren’t beating UNC consistantly, we never have. So why should we expect to compete for a conference title all of a sudden?

Folks keeps saying that 2007 and 2008 are the years to look forward to with the ‘Pack. And it was generally thought when CTC came aboard that 7-10 years would be needed to build a consistent winner. I don’t necessarily disagree with this but IMO here’s what needs to happen:

    1. No matter who comes in as the Hole HC, ‘Pack recruiting needs to keep producing – if not from N.C., then wherever.

    2. The assistant coach, especially coordinator, revolving door needs to disappear, understanding that younger coaches will need to move from time-to-time for career building. But coordinators primarily need to stay put for a consistent approach to the O and D and K during players’ entire careers at NCSU, thereby making play more instinctive.

    3. Coaching/management during games needs to improve greatly. I always wonder why CTC never has a paper in his hand on the sidelines. Maybe he needs a situation “cheat sheet” like the OC and DC have to review under certain situations for better decision-making.

    4. If by the end of the 2008 season the ‘Pack hasn’t at least challenged deep into November for a slot in the ACC Championship game, then it’s time for a new coach at NCSU.

  6. Mike 10/24/2006 at 12:28 PM #

One other interesting point. UNC has hired one of the top coaching headhunters around. Why would they do this? You would think their athletic department would be able to handle this themselves. After all, LF did it all himself, why do they need a headhunter?

  7. RickJ 10/24/2006 at 12:45 PM #

Excellent information – The 2 football programs will always be vying for the same core of in-state players. To date, Duke & Wake are rarely involved with the in-state players that really matter to State & UNC. Tennessee, Georgia, VPI, Clemson & other big time programs are much more of a problem for the elite players of the state. Of the 60 players for NC mentioned by Glenn, probably less than 20 really matter.

You can complain about a litany of issues with Amato’s coaching but one thing is certain – The day he was hired, in-state football recruiting got a lot harder for UNC. O’Cain basically conceded the majority of elite players to UNC and other out-of-state powers. Amato has fought hard and won his share of these battles. Unfortunately, he is winning fewer of these than a few years ago.

Clearly, the new coach at UNC is a big deal to us. As a comparison, I believe we can have an elite basketball program without ever having to beat UNC for a single recruit. No way this is true in football.

  8. joe 10/24/2006 at 12:54 PM #

Sheridan came in after 3 straight 3-8 seasons under Reed and won 8 games his first year. That might be a rare case, but a new coach can really turn things around quickly in some cases.

  9. choppack1 10/24/2006 at 12:57 PM #

Look what Fridge did. How do you think we’ll react if Bunting’s replacement wins the ACC?

  10. Sam92 10/24/2006 at 12:58 PM #

the only thing more relevant to N.C. State football than how UNC performs is how N.C. State itself performs. with a better coach at UNC everything gets more intense and difficult.

make no mistake – they compete with us like no one else.

one of the reasons chuck amato still has his job is UNC’s poor performance; if that changes, then it just gets hotter for Chuck, but hopefully we’ll have new leadership before UNC gets turned around

  11. Mr O 10/24/2006 at 1:04 PM #

Fridge won because he had some good talent in the program. Does anyone really believe that UNC has talent on their roster?

Fridge has missed a bowl for two straight years. If it only came down to coaching, then that wouldn’t have happened.

Jeff: I do believe that Carolina has some nice talent redshirting this year and does seem to have a nice class of commitments for 2007.

  12. RAWFS 10/24/2006 at 1:10 PM #

The table is set for a scorching offseason for Chuck Amato:

    1) UNC’s last home game and John Bunting’s last home game ever is 11/18.

    2) ECU is a lot better, especially on defense, than we think. They will be as motivated as they always are to send our homestanding crowd home sad.

Lose both of those games, and for Amato, it will be completely miserable for a long time to come. Sure, we should win those games, but we should have beaten Akron and Maryland.

Jeff: Amen, brother. Whether we qualify for a real bowl or not, we definitely are positioned to have two bowls on our schedule at the end of the year.

  13. gopack89 10/24/2006 at 1:12 PM #

Don’t know how you’ll react Chop, but if I can talk my way past security, I’ll jump from Vaughn Towers if UNX wins the conference next year.

  14. RickJ 10/24/2006 at 1:15 PM #

“Does anyone really believe that UNC has talent on their roster?”

O – I don’t think so and am really hoping that is the case. Surely they have some good players but I think Bunting’s very worse flaw is talent evaluation. He keeps talking about how great the 22 players they are redshirting are and maybe he is right but I seem to recall hearing this before.

RAWFS – That is one scary scenario.

  15. joe 10/24/2006 at 1:15 PM #

Mr. O – According to another article on this very website, UNC should have talent equal to NCSU and Clemson and better than Wake Forest.

SFN: No. According to another article on this very wesbite, UNC recruited equal talent to NCSU…etc…etc. Due to their abnormal attrition issues, they should NOT have equal talent and I don’t think anyone here represented that they should.

I know they have lost recruits but it’s certainly possible that a new coach could use that talent much better than Bunting has.

  16. redfred2 10/24/2006 at 1:40 PM #

You can just about play in the ACC locally all across the east coast now because our boy Swofford has his teams spread all up and down the eastern seaboard. In state and local recruiting will become even more of a premium in the future.

FSU, VT, MU, with the way this year is unfolding it seems that it may have been the golden opportunity to make some noise nationally, at least while playing within this currently, very weak, conference anyway. Probably wouldn’t be factor after reaching the real competition of the other BCS teams, but that is the way the system works. The publicity would have lasted throughout the regular season and been great for recruiting anyway. Oh well, at least the out manned, Wake Forest Demon Deacons are making the most of it and still out there and representing NC’s old Big 4 pretty well.

On another note, someone said yesterday that Clemson can’t stay up there. Wrong! The folks behind the Clemson Tiger football program will do everything in their power to ensure it if there is any way possible. If T Bowden handles it right, he has all of the backing he could ask for anywhere. They peaked at just the right time to build for the future.

  17. Woof Wolf 10/24/2006 at 1:45 PM #

Another example of an instant turn around: Holtz came in after three back-to-back 3 win seasons. He won 8, 9, & 9 in his first three years. In year two we were 6 – 0 in the ACC. The three losses were to Nebraska, Georgia and Penn State.

  18. partialqualifier 10/24/2006 at 1:57 PM #

I read the blog and noticed that you quoted someone as saying we need not worry about UNC cause we want to be where FSU and Va Tech are…program wise. I thought that it sounded vaguely like what I wrote yesterday in response to all the “whining” from Pack fans worrying that a decent UNC coach would mean the end to NC State. Then I noticed you responded to my comments and I thought….maybe this quote was directed my way. The problem is….you horribly misquoted my comments. Furthermore, apparently you misunderstood them as well.

Jeff: Was just using the item as harbinger of different comments from different places. Also didn’t ‘directly quote’ as I prefaced the quotes with “statement that went something like…” It’s not a big deal; just worked it into the core of this point.

My primary point is the same. I mentioned FSU and Va Tech. My point was that given where NC State FB was just 7 years ago, who would have ever thought that in 2006 we would be competing toe-to-toe with Va Tech and FSU year in and year out?

Jeff: It is all in your perspective. Although we “compete” closely with these teams in game-specific match-ups, have we really competed with their place atop the conference standings every year? No way. It’s all relative. Do we want to talk about competing in individual games or are we talking about our program competing with theirs?

Same thing works in the inverse related to Carolina. They have “competed” with us in individual match-ups over the last 7 years…but, their program doesn’t compare at all to our program over the last seven years.

Who would ever have thought that the same fans who after a final game victory at home vs. ECU chanted “Bowl….bowl….bowl…” repeatedly as Mike O’Cain and Co. left the field would now be trying to run out a coach who has 5 bowl games in 6 seasons? Some people just need to make up their mind. If we are such a good football program that you guys expect 8+ wins per season or else, then to be damn sure we can survive a good coach coming to Chapel Hill. If our program relies solely on UNC having a terrible coach in order to survive, then what kind of a program do we have? And why in the hell do people get mad when we lose at Maryland if our whole success hangs by such a thin thread? In other words…we have no hope. Let’s just hope that every 8-10 years UNC gets another horrible FB coach so that our poor little Wolfpack FB Program can salvage a couple of decent years. God….it is sickening!

I know that good recruits are hard to come by in NC. There arent enough good players to go around. I also know that having another Mack Brown at UNC will make things tougher for our beloved Pack all the way around. But it is time for all of us to make a decision. If you believe that we have a great school and a good FB program and should be competing with anybody in the country…then tell those guys at UNC to strap it up tight and bring their A game! But if you believe that the future of our success at NC State relies solely on whether or not UNC can find a decent FB coach then it is time to lower your expectations and lay off Amato!

Jeff: Sorry. But, I don’t understand this line of thinking at all. Seems like a lot of unrelated items getting subjectively connected.

  19. RAWFS 10/24/2006 at 1:59 PM #

Clemson is not done peaking. They have a fairly young team in some key positions.

Wait until 11/11 and you’ll see how fast the Tigers are: they’ve recruited the last two 100 meter sprint champions from the state of Florida. Tommy is doing in Clemson what Papa did in Tallahassee all over, but better. Seems like the Tigers players are thus far avoiding the rap sheet.

  20. Wulfpack 10/24/2006 at 2:15 PM #

Partial, I think most NCSU fans could give a darn what the Heels do with their football program. I know I expect to have a strong program regardless of what happens over there. My primary point is that we haven’t exactly lit it up the past few years, and given the schedule ahead, we may not either this year. Of course, that all hinges on how we finish the season. And this could be a mute point by that time if we do happen to be in contention for the division title, but I’m just not seeing it right now. Could be wrong, of course, have been many times before…and hope that I am!

Facts are Chuck is 25-27 in the ACC during his tenure, I believe. Respectable, yes, but certainly nothing to write home about. MOC was 26-30 as a point of reference.

And your point about us competing with FSU doesn’t hold water today b/c FSU isn’t really all that good anymore. They’re getting beat far more than they ever have before during the glory years. Right now, we’re just another one of the relatively average teams in a very average conference. We don’t appear to be moving forward or separating ourselves from the rest of the pack who are striving for the top.

Whoa! Hold on there man. No one is basing this program’s success on UNC. All I was just saying that we haven’t been able to capitalize on a great head start that, I think anyway, could have possibly caused them to fold up their little tent and had them concentrating solely on basketball. Whether we like it or not, powder blue is a magnet, no matter who is coaching there, basketball or football, or what last year’s W/L record happened to be.

I thought we would have been able to stiffle their immediate hopes in football with all of the momentum that has been accomplished in Raleigh lately. But, the only place the powder blues aren’t lagging far behind us is on gameday, on the football field itself.

  22. redfred2 10/24/2006 at 2:26 PM #

^To add, that is THE single major factor in getting more out of the local recruiting base.

  23. Cardiff Giant 10/24/2006 at 2:35 PM #

Considering that Amato has been regularly outcoached by a complete idiot in Bunting, I shudder to think of what even a competent coach will do to him. A good coach will have him barking like a dog.
