Others Catching the Pack’s Optimism

This week has been quite a whirlwind for NC State’s Basketball program.

Heading into the week the program had been told that Chris Wright was going to announce his selection for NC State on Tuesday. Between Monday night and Wednesday – Wright had changed his mind, Andrew Brackman’s decision to play baseball became public, and Sidney Lowe’s first media day didn’t go quite as flawlessly as it should have.

But, even before JJ Hickson committed to the Pack on Thursday others were starting to take notice of, and buy into, a new feeling inside of NC State Basketball.

Check out this blog entry from the Fayetteville Observer written after media day.

As bad as things might seem for State in the short-term, I came away from new coach Sidney Lowe’s media day press conference yesterday with an amazingly positive feeling about the future of the Wolfpack program. It’s going to take awhile, perhaps a few years. But with a little patience and A LOT of recruiting, the potential is there for State to finally get to where it wants to be. That is, the equal of UNC and Duke. Or, at least, in the same ballpark with them.

The reason for my optimisim is Lowe. While the book is still out on his coaching ability, his personality and motivation are off the charts. In just 10 minutes, he set the bar higher than Herb Sendek did in 10 years by specifically stating that beating UNC and Duke were among the Wolfpack’s top priorities. And making it a point to show his national championship ring to his players, he is making a statement that State will no longer be happy just to make it to the tournament every year and the Sweet 16 every now and then.

That’s not to say Lowe is going to lead the Wolfpack to a national championship anytime soon. But if you don’t set goals, you’re never going to reach them. Now, at the very least, the N.C. State basketball program finally has some lofty goals.

It is nice to see some ‘outsiders’ acknowledging the absence of ambitious goals in the past after all of the arguments that WolfpackNation waged with ourselves in recent years. It would have been even nicer if some of the media would have recognized before sixteen years slipped away. But, credit must go to Caulton Tudor for penning one of the best essays on this topic even while Herb Sendek was still employed at NC State. ( Key link available by clicking here.)

LF is the luckiest man alive. After completely botching the process he still got a gem! I am happier with our basketbal program than I’ve been since the Coach V days and I believe most Wolfpackers share that sentiment.

Wonder if the media and fans are going to give Lowe as much grief as Amato for daring to aspire to and speak of — a “National Championship” as a goal.

So many people miss this fact. If you aim high and miss you will be higher than aiming low.

A team that can compete with UNC and Duke is a team that can win a national championship. I’m glad Coach Lowe seems to understand that. The Wolfpack is back baby!

That’s not the issue. The issue is when you are falling well short and refuse to state that as the case. The issue is having a telnted team that beat the likes of BC and FSU, but stumbled against Akron and S. Miss. I’m all for lofty goals, but let’s be fair and acknowledge that there’s a way’s ahead. Let there be a measuring stick as to where the program stands as it is today. We all know it, sometimes it just needs to be said by the head honcho. Otherwise it comes across as excessive hubris.

Landing Hickson was absolutely huge. Getting Larry Harris to come back to Raleigh may have been even bigger. There was nothing tangible to feel good about in regards to the basketball program until yesterday. Landing Hickson legitimizes our program under Lowe’s leadership. From recruits to rival fans to members of the media, yesterday turned a lot of heads.

I’m still not sold. We’ve been burned so many times over the last 16 years.

Sidney Lowe absolutely has the motivational/psychological make-up to be successful. How fast the he and the staff optimize the game plan + talent equation will determine how fast he turns things around. People always underestimate the tactical brilliance of Valvano and his willingness to try all kinds of stuff to gain an advantage or simply to force his opponent to adjust. I know Sidney has that in him as well. This season could still be brutal, but we have to stay positive and realize it’s not just about this year. It’s about building the best program in the Research Triangle over the next 7-10 years.

I never thought getting turned down by RB, JC, and others would turn out to be such a blessing. Thank you Sidney for still believing in us when you were choice # whatever. Now its our time to believe in you through what will likely be a challenging first year or 2.

You will never beat Carolina or Duke unless you set this as one of your goals. This goal has been made publically unlike with Coach Sendek.

Hey folks, Hickson is coming in, just wait till next year! Oh wait, my bad, seems to be a phrase I always heard and cant seem to get it out of my mind.

I am tickled RED that SL is here, and when the hire was announced, I was excited. The more I see and hear SL, the more and more excited I get. Will it be tough this year? Yes, I think it will be a struggle at times. I also think the fire by Sid can translate into some surprise wins, hustle wins, and please dont forget, we do have some talent on the team. Depth is an issue, but talent is there. We just never saw it because they were freshmen, and when they did gte in the game and produce, Herb yanked them. I guess he thought if he kept them in too long, we as fans would want them to play more.

The goals are to be competitive, to beat Dook and OCCC, to win the ACC, to get a high seed, advance to the Final 4, and yes, finally to COMPETE for a NCAA championship. Nothing wrong with setting goals, and even falling short sometimes of lofty goals. If the goal is to get to the NCAA tourney and drop out 1st round…….we did a darn good job of that. KUDOS to Sid for STATEing (sp error intended) goals and giving them something to shoot for.

“The issue is having a telnted team that beat the likes of BC and FSU, but stumbled against Akron and S. Miss.”

Bill Cowher’s Steelers eased into the playoffs and won the Super Bowl. Is the “issue” that he lost some games early on that the Steeler fans thought he ought to have won?

Is the “issue” that the Carolina Hurricanes got the snot beat out of them in game 6 or that they pulled it together and won the Stanley Cup?

We stumbled against Akron and S. Miss and then beat BC and FSU. How the hell is that an “issue”? If we lose to the hole again this year, THAT would be an issue.

Wulfpack, I may have been a little rough on your point of view. “The issue is when you are falling well short and refuse to state that as the case.”

If “Stating the case” of failure to meet a goal diminishes the stand for national excellence, I say don’t state the case. The “case” should be obvious to supporters and the goal should be just as obvious.

No, I for one don’t want to hear Chuck or Sidney announcing for the world to hear, “Hey folks, we have big ambitions here at NCSU and so far we are failing.” This is not a stockholder’s report, although in many ways it is. However in this particular incidence, the stockholders need to know that their best interests are being served by no report.

I read recently, Chris Fowler I believe, both sides of that kind of dilemma. Should LF make a public statement of support for Chuck or is a non-statement the best show of support. Those decisions are best made involving the person involved and that person’s desires must be a prominent if a championship relationship is to be maintained.

“it just needs to be said by the head honcho. Otherwise it comes across as excessive hubris.” Can you get that this is just one man’s opinion? Maybe many share it but it is still only one opinion expressed multiple times. That you may have read it here on SFN does not make it universal or necessarily the right way.

My wife is a business consultant executive development is her field of experise, She says that Chuck and Sidney are “speaking a future to live into.” After my funny look she continued, “The future you are living into gives you who you are being in the present.” I don’t know all I understand about that but I do remember when I was student heading out to the NC State cherry farm on Saturday night, the future I was living into was entirely different from the one I had Sunday morning in my room alone with a hangover.

Our coaches are exhibiting the highest levels of executive development in how they are managing the conversation for the future of their particular programs — whether we understand it or not, like it or not. It is a dilemma we must live with while we are in the developmental state. AFTER we get there the rules for sitting champions are different.

could someone please translate this last post???

First, it was 5:09 in the morning and the brain was still partially asleep, OK?

I was in a good mood after the Hickman commitment and 2 big football wins. So I was trying to say that both coaches are proclaiming to have programs on the rise EVEN THOUGH there is no evidence for it as of this moment. That we are on the rise is at this time not reality, just in their speaking, i.e., a conversation.

This is what successful executives do when they are enrolling the bankers, investers and employees into believing and striving for a plan for greatness in business. I got in over my head trying to draw a parallel example for Sid and Chuck. It’s how we get enrolled in giving money for building TMC, VT and the NEZ seats and all the other first class facilities we have built. It all starts with a future being spoken before it happens. It’s how 5 star recruits choose NCSU BEFORE we are a top 10 or 25 program.

Well at least he said he wants to beat UNC and Duke. May not happen for a while, but at least he said it like we were addressing a problem…the problem being that we dont beat them very often. If herb really didnt understand why there were so many people calling for his job, than he was just retarded. 8 and 38 is pathetic. I would rather go 3-23 or 4-22 than win a NC, if it means the only wins we had, were against them. Of course i did have to grow up in Chapel Hill.
