Weak Florist And Da Big Head

What a difference two weeks makes.

After the Southern Miss debacle most of us were writing off the team and slitting our collective football throats. Now we ride high after the team pulls itself together for two huge victories.

And we should be worried sick about the Wake Forest game this weekend.

We’ve been here before, you see. The Pack gets a huge victory – or victories- as the underdog (in fact, we’re the only team in the country to knock off two ranked teams while unranked). Then it falls flat against an opponent supposedly far inferior to the Goliath it whipped like a pizened dog the previous week.

I know, I know. There are cases where this hasn’t happened. But the trend is too obvious to ignore. It’s doubly worrisome when the upcoming game involves the Florists.

Yeah, the Florists haven’t won in Carter-Finley since, well, forever. But in 2004 they nearly did. And as for away games, as if last year’s debacle wasn’t enough, recall the 2003 Winston-Salem horror: shocked Pack fans filled that high school stadium at Wake and watched the Florists dismantle our nationally ranked team. Trust me: suffering the lisp-ridden taunts (“Go Wake THAWEST! State THHHUCKS!”) of Florist fans after that game was absolutely no fun.

No, no. The Florist fan base may have large numbers of those Southern small-town rich kids who take piano lessons and are said to have “tendencies. The Florist football team, though, is for real. And for State to have any pretensions of success this season, the Florists are one of the teams Chuck Amato’s boys simply must thrash and thrash soundly.

Now on paper, they should do so. The odds-makers are already spouting their nonsense and making us six point favorites. But – cliché alert – the games aren’t played on paper. That’s particularly the case with the Florists; paper football games don’t factor in the absolutely greatest danger facing State, fan and player, as I write this: Da Big Head.

We went to Weak in 2003 with Da Big Head and were beaten senseless. We invited the Florists to Carter-Finely in 2004 with Da Big Head, and had to take it to overtime after being down by 14 points. Even last year, with the Jay Davis saga winding to its agonizing end, Da Big Head chirped subconsciously: good God, I know we stink, but these are the Florists. Come on.

Haven’t you, like me, seen signs that post-FSU-win “Da Big Head” – the feeling that we “shouldn’t lose” to a team like Wake – begins to return? And that, my friends, is a recipe for disaster. We as fans and the players themselves must regard this game with utter seriousness. Win and we are on track to have a special season as well as breaking the Letdown Curse that dogs Wolfpack football like Inspector Javert. Lose and it’s another year of “Go Wake FOWEST! State THUUCKS!â€? Then, they’ll make tractor noises.

Look at is this way: When a guy whose whole contribution (and what a kilderkin it is) to this site is making jokes tells you it’s time to be serious, it probably is. It’s like a leprechaun putting down his beer, staring you in the eye, and saying it’s time to stop all that assing around and pay attention.

Lose Da Big Head. Take this seriously. And let’s give those presumptuous SOB Florists such a beating that they walk from the field knowing that their pretensions of gridiron glory are just that.

WF scared me before the seasson and even more now that crumpled against Clemson and we did what we did against FSU. Time to be serious and take care of business.

I agree, this is a big game. Especially with Wake comeing off a disappointing loss. We always play better as an underdog than we do when we are riding high. Which, not to get into a debate, is a reflection of the coaching staff… they need to let the players know how important each and every game is. I think if we see alot of penalties and stupid plays it is reflective of the attitude on campus and at practise this week.
but i dont get the florist joke,,, please enlighten

Wake had a “Black Out promotion for the Clemson game to get everyone to wear black. It was pretty successful and Lands End reported the largest sale of black cashmere sweaters in their history.

This game will say so much about our team, and coach.

At this point in the season we have to ask ourselves, which Wolfpack team is the real one? The one that lost to Akron and Southern Miss, or the one that beat BC and the ‘noles?

Wake is a true test because they are a good team, but one that we ought to be able to beat. In other words, we have to do more than just show up. We have to show up and play with discipline and heart — and that all comes down to good coaching.

I’m no fan of Chuck Amato, but I will give him the credit if we beat Wake.

What I want to know is how Daniel Evans has had such an impact on our defense? Easy to see the difference he has made in the O, but the defense has a new bounce in their step. Maybe they realize they don’t have to pitch a shutout every game, so they are playing looser.

At any rate, I don’t know that I have ever seen one kid make so much difference in an entire football team.

Will be a good battle with the Deacs on Saturday. But these are the games you simply HAVE to win. Got to take care of business at home, particularly against a conference and division rival. I think the Pack gets it done on Saturday.

And, I resemble the florist remarks!

Until we play consistently for a season, not just a game or two, Chuck will have his doubters and rightfully so! This week he can begin to put this trend of his to rest with a well executed and coached contest. At least we now have an offense that can score and keep the defense from having to win every game for us.

  7. redfred2 10/09/2006 at 12:55 PM #

    Pack Laddie

Having offense has lifted the weight from the D to carry the team and keep them in games. They can risk and play aggressively knowing that the numbers on our side the scoreboard can quickly change now.

    Pack Laddie:

Keeping the defense off the field by converting first downs allows the defense to conserve energy and not tire out as quickly. And what redfred2 said, you’re not always on your heels.

I look for Wake to try to “cut the snake off at the head” and rush Evans a bit. I hope that have some quick screens in the playbook or get the tight ends involved. just hypothesizing though.

  9. for2n8son 10/09/2006 at 1:26 PM #

^Right you are RF2 and since we’re not 3 and out all the time, they get a chance to rest. Plus, they are not all tensed up trying not to loose, they are out there kicking ass and having fun! They believe they are going to win. Football is such a game of mental attitude. What you think is usually what you get.

OK Jeremy, you beat me to it. Great minds run together.

Laddie, but you are not a WEAK Florist.

  12. cfpack03 10/09/2006 at 1:35 PM #

also, in case you didn’t know, UNC plays South Florida this weekend and its going to hilarious when they lose considering all shit they talked about our bowl game last yr.

  13. Cardiff Giant 10/09/2006 at 1:43 PM #

^ That will indeed be interesting to see. If they get blown by South Florida, it’s over. They’ll mail in the rest of the season. Except us, of course.

  14. for2n8son 10/09/2006 at 1:55 PM #

Hey guys, forget UNC. We give them way too much thought. They don’t deserve it, especially this year. I honestly believe we may have all the pieces in place. With good fan support, good gameplans, good preparation and good effort on the field, there is no telling what could happen. The saga continues this week against a very good Wake Forrest team. As for Carolina, there will be plenty of time to spit and cuss about them when that week comes along.

  15. cfpack03 10/09/2006 at 2:08 PM #

I just enjoy seeing the holes sqirm under the thumb of reality, like when their baby blue degree earns them a job as a bank teller.
anyway, I hope Wake does rush hard like JH hypothesized above. FSU tried it and we used delays to flip it against them. also, with great punters on both teams, both offenses will have to run the length of the field to score

  16. PackFan4evr 10/09/2006 at 2:11 PM #

I was at the game in 2003 and saw us get kicked around like a soccer ball in Grove Stadium. We went into that game riding a high and got humiliated by a very well coached team. We do the same this Saturday and the results will be the same!

The poise which Daniel Evans has been playing (and learning from dad, Johnny), hopefully he will keep everyone’s head on straight and grounded throughout pratice this week.

Also, as fans attending the game at Carter-Finley this Saturday, we need to support our team by being as loud or louder as we have the past 2 games. WE CAN BE THE 12th man on the field!!

  17. Cardiff Giant 10/09/2006 at 2:19 PM #

“Wake had a “Black Outâ€? promotion for the Clemson game to get everyone to wear black. It was pretty successful.”

Yes. As you know, pretty much all Wake fans have a Little Black Dress.

  18. GAWolf 10/09/2006 at 2:21 PM #

I’ve been to about six years of Wake games in a row if not more. I have some fantastic friends who are Wake grads and thus we try to help each other to the games year in and year out. So I’ve seen more than my fair share. We historically plat terrible against this team y’all call Weak. So terrible we’ve played at times that we have been manhandled by allegedly far less talented teams. I mean we’ve been blown off the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. If our team still doubts Wake’s readiness and ability, I will question not only our coaching staff but also our team. They should be embarrassed by some of the games they’ve played against Wake over the last couple of years.

Three years ago I sat in the stands in Winston Salem…. in the Wake student section wearing a red shirt mind you…. and had a kid say to me “take your public school refs and your public school team and your redneck public school fans and go on back to your public school.” After I yanked him out of his seat and after my friends unwrenched my hand from the collar of his Brooks Brothers shirt, I wished like hell our team could have heard that. If they’re half the men I hope they are, our boys would never play flat against that attitude ever again.

  19. Cardiff Giant 10/09/2006 at 2:21 PM #

Damn it, we had better not come out flat this weekend. I am really over that shit.

And GAwolf, your post is right on the money. Except you forgot to put the lisping in.

Yeah im flat out tired of getting beat by a team like a Wake in a situation like this. Amato has filled his quota for the year in winning a big game against a big-time opponent, but now I want to see him do something he doesnt do very often and that is beating a team we should beat. Of course three weeks ago, I wouldnt be saying Wake is a team we should beat, but Evans has shown the potential of this team, and how good we can really be.

    Jeremy Hyatt said:

Jeremy, given the last 3 years of our offense, I can assure you we have some screen plays in the book. We must have a million of them. If a screen pass to the right doesn’t work, he’ll try one to the left. Until recently, we were trying them on 3rd and longs. Go Trestman!

  22. cfpack03 10/09/2006 at 2:40 PM #

GA, I’m sure his collar was already “popped”, (douche-to-not-a-douche translation=up), making it even easier for you to grasp for the neck ringing

I’m really excited about what has happened the last two weeks. I hope we can continue to get better and my opinion on what I am about to say will change in a few weeks.

Looking at the rest of our schedule there are three games that we should definitely win: UVA, UNC, & ECU. There are two where we will be underdogs: Ga. Tech & Clemson. The next two games, Wake and Maryland, in my opinion are toss ups.

If we bring the team that played Thursday night and don’t make many mistakes, we can win both of them by two touchdowns or more. If we give less than a maximum effort, we could easily lose one or both.

From where we are right now, I think 8 – 4 overall and 6 – 2 in the conference would be a very good year. 9 – 3 and 7 – 1 would be fantastic. Yes I think it is possible to run the table, but it’s not likely. Let’s not get our expectations so high that we end up disappointed in a good season.

I would be happy to welcome you into town for the Peach Bowl, and we can wait until next year to win it all.

  24. cfpack03 10/09/2006 at 2:49 PM #

^that’s Da Big Head that I pray is not being entertained at practices this week

  25. for2n8son 10/09/2006 at 2:54 PM #

Let’s aim high. I can live with disappointment. I don’t do as well with embarrassment.
