Week 5 TV Schedule

The schedule this week is not as bad as last week or as good as two weeks ago. In fact, you could probably make it through this weekend with only one TV. Don’t miss VPI vs Ga Tech or Iowa vs OSU. Outside those matchups, you can just tune in to parts of the other games. For example, watching thirty minutes of the Miami/Houston game should keep you occupied between the two games above.

Tonight (Thursday) is particularly good for a Thursday. Auburn versus South Carolina may not be close, but it should be interesting with the two best coaches in the SEC going head to head. That’s right, Tubby doesn’t get the credit he deserves, and believe me, I’m not a fan of his, but he’s an outstanding coach.

Also, this evening is TCU. Since TCU never plays anyone, no one ever watches them. If you want to watch them before they are given their BCS Bowl bid, tonight would be a good night. To give you perspective on their opponent BYU, they are not an awful team. They’ve blown out two terrible ball clubs and played close against two mid level BCS programs. Personally, I would pay more attention to how TCU plays rather than the final score in this game. A dominating performance would give the Horned Frogs some credibility on the heals of the win over Texas Tech; however, anything less raises more questions about TCU’s BCS worthiness.

TCU knows how important this game is. Right now, BYU (2-2) and Utah (3-1 with wins against a IAA team and two winless teams) look like the toughest teams left on TCU’s schedule. As pathetic as that sounds, last year TCU won both those games in overtime by a combined 4 points after a ridiculous loss to an SMU team, which is the loss that kept them out of the BCS. This year they “luckily” don’t have to face SMU; so if they make it through the duo from Utah, TCU likely coasts into the BCS, deserving or not.

Wow, I can’t believe some of these crap-fests get prime TV slots. Maybe I’ll ask my wife for some chores, at least early in the day…

So much for the Horned Frogs getting to a BCS bowl.

thanks for posting this. I use it as my guide each week

I hate Spurrier. He’s an arrogant a–hole. But you’ve got to love the way he calls the game on offense.

The Horned Frogs aren’t a bad team, but this game shows why they are not a BCS quality team. Let’s just hope the voters have a longer memory than they did last year when TCU went into the bowl season with a top 15 ranking despite losing to SMU and needing overtime to beat Utah and BYU before barely escaping San Diego State late in the season. When you don’t play a tough schedule, style points matter.

Don’t be surprised if Cougar High (Houston) gives Miami fits.

Doesn’t Carolina play USF this year? Might be interesting to see how a former UNC opponent does against a future UNC opponent.

Though I only caught the second half the SC/Auburn game was great. The on sside kick by Tuberville was a gutsy call and SC’s offense did not get on the field for the whole quarter because of it. Hard fought game and SC’s defense did one hell of a job. Spurrier and the QB had the offense clicking in the fourth and in position to score at the end, but they couldn’t quite pull it off on 4th and goal.
    Good football game.

^Great football game, well played on both sides. Auburn was clearly the better team, but USC did everything they could to stay in that game. I loved the gutsy calls on both sides. I do think it is only a matter of time before Steve gets that program up and running at a pretty good speed. We saw inklings of it last night. Say what you want about the guy, but he can coach.

The good old onsides kick. Who else thinks of Monte Kiffin, to open the second half against the Heels, every time you see one that is not an end of game situation?

The Pack had controlled the first half, and they had seen on film that one of UNC’s up men turned his back and retreated as soon as the kicker began moving towards the ball. The ball was kicked toward the vacated area. Guess what, that time he stayed at home, they recovered, and the whole game swung on that play.

Tuberville’s call was gutsy, because it worked. Kiffen’s call would have been gutsy, if it had worked, but it didn’t, so he was an idiot.

  14. joe 09/29/2006 at 12:32 PM #

I thought Kiffin said the problem was that the kicker did not kick it to the correct area of the field. But maybe my memory is bad.

  15. Pack Laddie 09/29/2006 at 12:44 PM #

joe—the guy that had always moved on film, didn’t move. The ball was kicked to the right spot. Maybe a bit farther than you would have liked, but it did go to the proper area.

  16. choppack1 09/29/2006 at 12:58 PM #

If it’s just one guy, that’s one thing. If it’s several – that’s another.

In Auburn’s case, no one was w/in 3 yards. Tubberville also mentioned that the wind was severe, they’d be getting the ball at the 35 anyways. In other words, I don’t think he attempts the offsides kicks if circumstances are different.

Kiffin has proven himself at least a very able and strong assistant. That he hasn’t gotten an HC job probably tells us a lot.

  17. BladenWolf 09/29/2006 at 1:06 PM #

^They remember his days at State as HC.

  18. BladenWolf 09/29/2006 at 1:08 PM #

Being a great OC (or DC-hint hint) and being a great HC are not mutually inclusive.

Good ol Monte Kiffin and the onside kick. If memory serves me right the guy stayed put and Carolina recovered. which always fueled my thought and some State coaches at the time that the refs tipped off the Carolina sideline to be ready for the onside. Someone should do a video of the multiple weird no calls in the end zone, reversed toouchdown calls, and all sorts of weird official related crap that has happened in the history of Carolina and State basketball and football games. Not to mention how Stachouse verbally committed to NCSU and then it lloked like he was not going to qualify, but got admitted to UNC. Now there’s a book/video that needs to be published! Ad in all other sorts of crap like how UNC’s McCants can afford to get an apartment in UNC and have his afford to quit her job and move in to take care of him while he gets well in the middle of basketball season from his mysterious stomach problem. yet he announces for family financial reasons he’s going pro a year early!! The UNC family media would never allow such a thing to exist but it should be done!!!!

The refs tipped off the Carolina sideline?

    LMFAO

  21. RAWFS 09/29/2006 at 2:17 PM #

    Laddie,

There are many things that could have happened in that play, and an inadvertant clue may have been one of them. Emphasis on “may have.”

Occam’s Razor, however, suggests that the UNC player made the fundamentally sound play and the rest is history.

I was there (student) and my parents were in town for the weekend and I got them tickets. Several years later, my parents were visiting my brother and saw the Peebles catch with no time left against SC. Guess which game my parents still talk about and which one has never been mentioned again.

Two consecutive free weekends to choose games…..and do other fallish things….I may watch bits and pieces….But with such a beautiful weekend ahead, outdoor stuff is in vogue (no tailgaiting)

  24. BladenWolf 09/29/2006 at 2:50 PM #

Besides watching Tech play Tech this weekend, I may have to pull out the old tape of the 2002 Gator Bowl and watch us throttle Notre Dame (again).

I went down to Jacksonville that year, so watching it on tape (again) always charges me up.
