Evans @ QB and Brown @ TB

An Evans and Brown in the same NC State backfield.

Sound familiar?

(This is a chance for all of your old-schoolers to reminisce a bit).

I have send out major credit to SFN community member, ‘Stormin Norman’ for this observation and general call about Evans/Brown.

Before LAST SEASON Stormin was preaching to me that Daniel Evans would be starting before the year was over and that Andre Brown SHOULD be the Wolfpack’s starting TB.

Stormin isn’t the only one who has been preaching this. Take a look at this entry from RAWFS:

Red & White has been saying this since the start of the 2005 season. Our players have been saying this since the start of the 2005 season. Individuals close to the Wolfpack football program have been saying this since the start of the 2005 season. Daniel Evans (#7 in the 2006 Day of Champions photo) is the best QB wearing the Wolfpack uniform. After Evans’ strong play at the end of the humiliating 37-17 loss to USM, Chuck Amato also saw what everyone else has been saying.

It took the coaching staff more than half the season to get the Andre Brown thing right last year…and, now it looks as though that same tardiness may have impacted the unveiling of Evans under center. All we can do now is hope that the new ingredients can improve on these sad results.

Wow – those stats are pretty damning – especially considering that we’ve yet to enter conference play.

    This was also very telling:

And there is turnover margin: -2.33 (116th in the country).

I’m also interested to see if we open up the playbook more Saturday.
    1) I’m wondering if Evans can digest more pages more effectively
    and
    2) It doesn’t look like we can count on our D to stop good offenses when they need to.

I remember when Lou Holtz was the coach. We started the year pitifully in the first 2-3 games. Coach was relying on the guys who had “put in their time”.

I went to the game expecting a loss. But Holtz turned everything upside down and played some young talent. A guy named Ted Brown ran through the opposition like butter. Some other guys represented.

Bottom line is there are times when you have to go with a new lineup when people are not producing.

Opening up the playbook isn’t going to do a lot unless the OL improves a great deal.

There are no holes for running and we can’t sustain our blocks long enough to throw the ball down the field.

Jeff: I couldn’t agree more with this. OL has been a huge disappointment.

Even with the lack of time Stone has as a starter (does he even have a full year yet?) there is no excuse for the end zone INT last Saturday.

I have friends in Raleigh who have, since spring practice, said Daniel Evans is the man. Daniel might not throw the ball a mile like Stone but #17 always had comments made his arm strength as well. Seems like Rivers did pretty well with his weak arm due to ACCURACY and more importantly DECISION MAKING ability. The latter seems to be the most important area Stone is lacking in. All we nedd is the ability to hit the 10-20 yard pass with some regularity and the linebackers have to start dropping back. At that point we all know what our 2 workhorse tailbacks are capable of. Thanks for the effort Marcus and good luck Daniel!

We need a leader on the field and someone who can manage the game. Hopefully Daniel is that man.

I have been told by many that Daniel is going to surprise everyone. Look back at The Wolfpacker at the beginning of last year and Freddie Audrey Lindsey stated that he had faced Daniel in practice everyday and that Daniel was his pick as QB. I will stick my neck out and say that we have found our starter for the next 2.5 years. Mike Barry was once stated that Daniel would be the starter if he could put on some weight. Daniel can throw and make good decisions. Daniel followed his dream and now is living it. Go Whip BC Saturday!

The question is really whether an undersized, relatively immobile QB can manage not to get killed behind our OL. Stone was a good “fit” due to his size and mobility – but he couldn’t get it done with his arm.

I agree with the move, but it is still far from a good situation.

  9. WolfPup35 09/19/2006 at 9:17 AM #

It’s about damned time that someone else sees what we all saw in the spring…..being a good QB ain’t all about the arm..it starts in the head.

Since everyone knows all about the west coast offense because of its antiquity, we definitely need to open up the playbook, hit the TE more, and see what those talented kids at WR can really do.

Regarding the OL – as bad as it is, it is senior ladden – I believe we have 3 seniors starting at this time. Now, the question is, are these 3 starting because they’ve put to their time in or do they deserve the job.

Regarding Evans’ speed – we put him in the game last year vs. FSU and he ran a reverse. He actually ended up gaining 4 or 5 yards – not bad against that D. (Of course, he was running for his life.)

Aside from that one play, I haven’t seen him much. I didn’t waste much time or energy on the game Saturday. Grilled out some shrimp, chorizo, and kabobs…every now in then I’d check out the score – shake my head in disbelief, then go back outside and try to forget about what I was hearing – and get back to enjoying a nice evening.

My question and what aggrevates me the most is why does Amato have a history of doing this? He managed to get the Philip Rivers call right off the bat, or maybe that was Norm Chow, but I don’t understand why he consistently doesn’t play the best player. He played Davis in front of Stone, and Stone in front of Evans. It also took him half of last year to figure out Andre Brown was the man. How can they see this every day in practice and not make these changes for the games? Makes me wonder if we have the best lineman playing on OL also

NC State starting defensive tackle Tank Tyler is scheduled to go to court on Oct. 11 to face a misdemeanor charge of assaulting a Raleigh police officer, according to a report in the Durham Herald-Sun.

Tyler, a 6-2, 305-pound senior from Fayetteville, N.C., was arrested in July after allegedly “leaning forward and lunging at the officer in a threatening manner to strike him” at a night club on Capital Boulevard.

Tyler was also cited for being intoxicated and disruptive in a public place and was reportedly challenging others to fight. This news breaks just a few days after Tyler was ejected from NC State’s 37-17 loss at Southern Miss after an official said the Wolfpack tackle spit at him.

Tyler should miss the rest of the season based on these 2 incidents.

  15. ncsu96 09/19/2006 at 10:28 AM #

^absolutely. This happened in July… why was he even allowed to play? There is no question of guilt when it’s a police officer… sheesh.

    I’m embarrased for our universtity.

  16. burnbarn 09/19/2006 at 10:46 AM #

“There is no question of guilt when it’s a police officer”

You really don’t believe this do you?

  17. choppack1 09/19/2006 at 11:02 AM #

Actually – if it was just one incident or the other – suspend him for a game or two. However, given 2 charges – both which demonstrate a disrespect for the well-being of others, he should be suspended for the rest of the season.

NCSU96 must live in a vacuum.

As a criminal defense attorney I will tell you that I have met more police officers who will lie to cover themselves than in any other group of people I’ve ever been around. It’s truly a shame, too. Some of the nicest, most straight up people I have met are also police officers. I will say, however, that the majority of police officers no longer take that job to “protect and serve.” For most it’s quite the contrary that pushes them into law enforcement. Obviously the good ol’ cop is still around, but he’s a dying breed.

I know of an RPD officer that was kicked out of rec hockey for taking a run at a female ref and hurting her. That guy should have been charged but wasn’t. Cops are good guys for the most part but they are not angels and are not above doing some questionale stuff, just like anyone else.

  21. Cardiff Giant 09/19/2006 at 12:52 PM #

True. It is certainly not the case that cops always tell the truth. Sometimes they lie. Most of the time, they are more likely to avoid the whole truth – which you have to get out of them on cross.

I’ll never condone it, but it happens to athletes and regular college students as well, and it doesn’t take a kid, athlete or not, doing something totally childish, to embarrass me about a whole university.

    Never will.

We’re be subjected to enough embarrassment from the adults in Raleigh anyway.

  23. Wolf-n-Atl 09/19/2006 at 1:13 PM #

Hopefully our problems on defense will be corrected with the improved play of the offense. I’m sure it wore on the defense to make big plays and then watch the offense go 3 and out. Most of the problems against USM seemed to be bad tackling and containment. USM used the UNC play book from last year, running to the edges to counter our penetration up the middle. Apparently their line is very experienced which helped them contain our rush.

  24. choppack1 09/19/2006 at 1:29 PM #

Regarding Tank – that he just got accused of spitting in a ref’s face doesn’t help his credibility.

  25. thebigwood 09/19/2006 at 1:41 PM #

GAWolf, you nailed it about PO’s. I used to work in a bar that was frequented by a lot of RPD, and some of them are brutal. But there are some good ones too. That all aside, TT should not be involved in any of this bs…he is a team captain. And that deal at the Southern Miss game should have him sitting at least one game. Better to send a positive message, esp. when we already look like a bunch of whiners.
