Poll – Week 2

As mentioned in the first poll, StateFansNation considers these early polls to be premature and for the most part meaningless, as not enough football has yet been played. Again, as a result, you can expect to see considerable changes in the poll from week to week.

A couple of quick notes…

Cal and Arkansas are out, Texas Tech and UCLA are in. Notre Dame will have ample opportunity through September to convince us of a higher (or lower) ranking. USC and Texas both looked better than expected with new QB’s. This week we’ll learn a lot more about Texas (and Ohio State). With a win over a decent Nebraska team next week, USC has the potential to solidify its position. We’ll also have to wait until next week to learn more about the SEC, but on the 16th Auburn/LSU and Tennessee/Florida should give us the early frontrunners for the division titles. Below is our week 2 poll.

1.  Ohio State
2.  Southern Cal
3.  LSU
4.  Tennessee
5.  Florida
6.  Auburn
7.  Florida State
8.  Texas
9.  Miami-FL
10. Notre Dame
11. Georgia
12. Michigan
13. Iowa
14. West Virginia
15. Clemson
16. Louisville
17. Nebraska
18. Oregon
19. Penn State
20. Virginia Tech
21. Georgia Tech
22. Boston College
23. Texas Tech
24. Oklahoma
25. Arizona State

Dropped Out
Cal, Arkansas

Tennessee #4? B/c of one win against a team from the pac-10 that was completely overwhelmed with the environment. I believe they are a top 25 team, but def not top 10 right now.

Where’s Rutgers? Norte Dame behind Miami is a little dicey at theis point of season, but I can very well see them finishing up that way. Every big SEC school in or around the top ten w/o Spurriers Gamecocks? He is going to find a way to win close games, with tricky or just by intimadating refs by spiking his visor. If there are so many great teams this year in the SEC than surely USC deserves to be tucked in the top 25.

    Slader,

    Why not Tennessee #4?

Is there anyone else in America who looked as good on Saturday? Is there anyone else in America who looked as good against a team expected to be as good as California?

We try to have a little more weight in our polls on how schools actually perform as opposed to what people’s (relatively baseless) preconceived notions of the teams may be before the season.

Tennessee led a preseason Top 15 team by a score of 35-0 on Saturday. Did anyone else perform that well?

We aren’t trying to predict where teams will end up. We are trying to rank where teams belong in relation to each other based on their actual performance to date. Just like the computers, the whole thing will be much more accurate after about a month of games.

How great would it be if these polls were not taken until the middle of October? The whole interative process of using last week’s polls (That were proven to be wrong) as a basis for the next week’s poll is about as logically flawed as is possible.

    Playoff with conference winners please.

I could not agree more. I guess the Harris Poll does wait until September 24th, but I’m still not sold on it as a good poll. I will always believe that the coach’s poll is a joke no matter what. The coaches simply don’t have the time or priority to watch games of team’s they aren’t playing. Further, it doesn’t appear that the coaches actually do the voting all of the time anyway. Plus there is an obvious conflict of interest.

    I’m all about a playoff.
