Summer School: ACC Basketball

Basketball has taken center-stage a little this week as football is still two weeks away and the ACC released 06-07 Basketball schedules yesterday. (N&O Story, Durham Herald Sun Story)

A few quick hits:

* Did anyone note that Seton Hall was NOT on NC State’s schedule despite previous public statements that indicated that the Wolfpack would travel to the Meadowlands this year?

* How can the ACC protect the season-ended tradition of Duke-Carolina and NOT get State-Wake and Maryland-Virginia right? It’s absurd.

* 4 or 5 games will be shown on ESPNU, which is not on any cable systems in North Carolina. There will be alot of pressure for these systems to add ESPNU. You can avoid this problem by getting a satellite dish.

Earlier in the week we had some conversations surrounding Basketball recruiting and more specifically, Jamelle McMillan. So, today we will take a look at some recent work that the major media outlets have done this summer their look at the 2006-2007 basketball season to a higher level .

ESPN took time for a summer school primer of the ACC. (Link)

On the video provided, Andy Katz says

“At Maryland, Gary Williams is feeling a little bit of heat”

Can you imagine? A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP and ACC CHAMPIONSHIP within the last five years and the fans are putting on a little heat?

OMG! Those must be some horrible fans! Obviously, they don’t know that no other coach would ever want to coach their program after being so mean and ungrateful to their current accomplished coach. Just like Indiana and College of Charleston ran away very successful coaches this year and ended up having to shut down their basketball programs because nobody would come coach for them! (Flashback to IU’s Bad Fans and Flashback to Charleston’s Bad Fans)

Do you think that the coaching fraternity and media will be protective of Gary Williams if Maryland fans ultimately “run him away”? I am willing to doubt that (a) Williams is not a quitter and would never be a big *ussy and run away to another job while whining to anyone that will listen about how unfair his life is and how the mean fans “forced” him to make his own choice to leave, and (b) the coaching fraternity wouldn’t hate to see Williams disappear because he has proven the ability to kick their ass.

Fox Sports gives us a little more detail than ESPN in some of the links that are embedded in this piece.

You can expect some personnel losses in a coaching change, but North Carolina State’s Sidney Lowe, who is taking over for Herb Sendek, has seen that go to extremes.

During that time, Lowe learned that one of his top potential returnees, Cedric Simmons, was entering the NBA draft two years early. Two recruits, Dan Werner and Larry Davis, asked for — and received — releases from the letters-of-intent they had signed under Sendek.

Even if Grant returns, the Wolfpack look to be no better than a middle-of-the-pack team in the ACC. Traditionally, that often gets a team an NCAA bid, but the conference got only four berths in last season’s tournament.

SFN had previously mentioned CollegeHoopsNet.com’s countdown of the Top 144 Basketball teams for 2006-2007. Unfortunately, CHN picks up on the “depletion” story their countdown and log the Wolfpack in at #107. Unfortunately, they are still using the NSC diamond logo that has not been associated with the basketball program in any way in over 16 years and has not been associated with NC State athletics in over six years.

RAWFS commented on the piece and highlight that Andrew Brackman is the wildcard to the season.

If Brackman plays basketball, it will add much-needed depth. That’s not looking likely, but if it happens, there’s no way NC State is a #107 team. In fact, with or without Brackman, the crew that Lowe will bring to the court in his first season at the helm of NCSU basketball could well have them in the top 64 teams on Selection Sunday.

Several reasons why I am now convinced ESPNU will find its way onto Time Warner Cable soon:

    1. Columbia at Duke, Nov. 12 (ESPNU)
    2. Carolina vs. Sacred Heart, Nov. 14 (ESPNU)
    3. FAU at Carolina, Dec. 19 (ESPNU)
    4. Carolina at St. Louis, Dec 22 (ESPNU or ESPN2)
    5. We have 3 games on ESPNU through the holidays (all home games). Dec 28 vs EZU, Dec 30 vs UNC-W, and Jan 2 vs UNC-G.

The piece on Williams is another example of national media contriving stories to give themselves self-importance. Isn’t some portion of a fanbase at any school more zealous/doubtful than others much of the time? Andy Katz, like Jim Rome and many other national media voices, look at us from their rarified positions, covering college sports as a nation, and thus, often not understanding what local media tend to understand much better.

Gary Williams is a brilliant guy and I would bet many in Md’s fan base have very clear memories of his predecessors and how they fared. I’m sure they also realize his value as a coach.

I won’t mention the name, but the media idiocy over the resignation and replacement of a former State coach, including the legacy of greatness that he and his predecessor diminished, are certainly a classic example of contrivance. We had a saying in journalism school, “the piranhas are always romantic.” This meant that pundits are always looking for blood in the water, even if it is in the body of someone or something healthy. Their existence as media sluts within vast multinational corporations, often whoring for ratings or readerships, leads them to contrive at the expense of good people and institutions. (Ask the Ramseys in Boulder). But they are often swayed by their own romantic attachments to the schools they think are great, even indomitable. Remember Duke under Bucky Waters and before? How about UNC football for the last decade or so? Two schools in North Carolina do have stellar programs but coverage of the Duke-UNC basketball rivalry is driven partly by national priorities, ratings. What about those of us who actually live here, attended the ACC schools, comprise the fan base? State-Wake has been televised forever, as have many other rivalry games within the conference. Dear John Swofford, can this be about something more than money?

I wish we could have local media coverage (I.e., getting our games off of ESPNU and onto local stations) of the ACC be much stronger to the marginalization of the Disney-owned entities in places like Connecticut or Rupert-owned money factories in Hollywood. It will never happen, those days are gone, but how about a little more respect for those of us who live in the neighborhood.

These national pundits don’t know us. They only care about us in terms of the revenues we can generate for them by watching.

^ PAPacker – thank you for such an incredible post! Fantastic comments!

Please never hesitate to share more in the future.

PA Packer – One thing to remember under Swofford- the market place and bottum line aren’t important unless it impacts UNC-Ch positively.

Swofford is a marketplace guy when it comes to Duke-UNC-Ch (even though I betcha the ratings for the second game pale to the first one) – but when that marketplace benefits NC State – such as in the Charlotte Bowl game last year – well, then it’s time for principal and right/wrong in the selection process based on tradition and merit.

I thing State will struggle to be an NCAA team without Brackman this season — the starting 5 will be fine (though there is a big difference b/w McCauley and Brackman at center), but the depth is … suspect.

The Pack has a tough OOC schedule with no padding via a tournament — nine wins seem reasonable against that slate, 10 quite possible, but a bit of a stretch. That means State has to go 8-8 in conference to get on the bubble, IMO. Until we see the style Lowe puts on the floor, who plays and how it all fits together, I think the tendency will be to assume the worst for State’s basketball fortunes this season — any team that loses 4 starters with a low-rated recruiting class is going to suffer low expectations, which are usually exacerbated by a coaching change. State has the trifecta going on the expectations front.

That said, the CHN number is too low. I think even the last place ACC team should be no lower than 100 or so (and saw WFU and Miami below State on this list), so I think the pick is a bit skewed.

does anyone know why JJ Hickson set 4 official visits to 4 of his top 5 schools? the school not included you ask… NC STATE?

  7. Joeboot 08/18/2006 at 1:42 PM #

packbackr04 – I read that Hickson would visit his top 3 schools (a list that currently includes NC State) and then choose 2 others. It looks like we’ll get an official visit from him – it just hasn’t been scheduled. I hope so, he seems to be the real thing and we could really use someone with his kind of talent.

  8. PAPacker 08/18/2006 at 1:55 PM #

Everybody live right until October. Hickson, Wright and Thomas would be such a great core to build around. Has anybody heard where we are with Tracy Smith? Also, Dorenzo Hudson seems to just be hanging out there as a strong SG. Why not try to pick him up? Are they waiting to see what Sanchez does? Any thoughts on when Sanchez might decide? Are we strong with him?

  9. packbackr04 08/18/2006 at 1:55 PM #

joe^^ where did you read that? On hos scout.com page there is an articel stating he has set official visits with Florida on 9/9/2006, tennessee 9/23/2006, arizona 9/16/2006, and goergetown 10/13/2006.. the only school listed above us is Florida

  10. Joeboot 08/18/2006 at 2:02 PM #

pb04 – I read it in a story titled “Pearl Pursues Perfect Post” (from the Tennessee site) linked on Hickson’s Scout.com page.

  11. primacyone 08/18/2006 at 2:20 PM #

I think we are as high on the list with Smith as anybody. Hickson, Wright, Thomas and Smith. WOW. Are you kidding me? That’s a real possiblity.

What do we have to do to make that happen(within NCAA rules of course)? Is it just me or what – not only do they appear to be great for us, we appear to be great for them, and they appear to be perfect for each other.

    Go Sidney Go.

  12. packbackr04 08/18/2006 at 2:24 PM #

joe^, well i dont have anything other than what is on his scout page so the info on there may not be correct. I do hope that you are right though because he would be huge!

  13. vtpackfan 08/18/2006 at 2:28 PM #

Gleason and McKinney. Case and Sloan. What these guys did for ACC basketball is unbelieveable, and now we have expansion and this f-+%ing sh^t. Where is Packer and his “dixie fried” son on this one? What is a VPI on UNC Charlottesville schedule mean (feeling very ignorant today)?

  14. vtpackfan 08/18/2006 at 2:46 PM #

Not to be a drag but i think I’ve mentioned before about Mt. Zions’ possible diploma mill status. Preps who graduated alreay (06) have the a clause to go by, barring any hassles w/NCAA clearinghouse process. “’07 preps are a different can’o’worms. The NCAA has yet to announce any official procedure past the ’06 recruiting year so it is really hard to tell if and how Tracy Smith could be involved in this (’07 Mt. Zion). It could be a formality that Sid and staff could navigate arround when the time comes, or it could be a complete non factor in which I am just exhausting some seriously useless steam. But, IMHO, it would/could be the only reson he has not committed to State already. I agree with all that he would be a huge lift to the rebuilding effort and he seems a near perfect fit.

Hudson seems a bit of a mystery. It may be that the targets higher on the food chain (i.e. Wright, Hickson, Smith) will have to show there hand before we see Sid make a play for Hudson. By all accounts he would be a strong complimentary player to any recruiting class nationwide. A guard who can not only outrebound his opposition but hold his own on the glass with anyone (except sky scraper types) would probably get some substantial playing time for Lowe if/when he decides to throw some zones at the opposition. My guess is that Lowe can’t afford to act to quickly with some stud recruits due to show up in Raleigh, and a fresh ’08 campaign looking for recruits coming up fast. Thats my BBall rant for today.

    That N&O link is great:
    ***
UNC AT DUKE, FEB. 7; DUKE AT UNC, MARCH 4

No word yet on whether ESPN will up the ante and devote 12 channels of round-the-clock coverage to broadcast the cleaning crews’ efforts to get Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Smith Center ready for these two Games of the Century of the Week.
    ***
Yes, I see that TV Guide has the game scheduled for 9pm on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU already.

At the risk of shaking the Temple pillars, has there ever been a meaningful reason given for Dereck Whittenburg’s non-candidacy, given the fact that State hired his running mate?

  17. nycfan 08/18/2006 at 6:05 PM #

^Association with Valvano as an assistant coach.

Question: Why is State the only ACC team playing only 12 OOC games? Every other team plays at least 13 (14 or 15 with a tourney).

  18. PAPacker 08/18/2006 at 6:19 PM #

ok, thanks nycfan, btw, you in manhattan?

  19. PAPacker 08/19/2006 at 8:40 AM #

nycfan, do you know of any sports bars where state fans gather to watch games?

  20. TomA 08/19/2006 at 10:02 AM #

I hope that I am too late adding to this talkback but I wrote an e-amil to TW Cable to ask about ESPNU and ESPN360 and if they will be added to the cable line-up. The response that I got was that they have already started negotiations to carry the new channels. The chances are good they we will get them but don’t know when. They are also looking for input from TW subscribers about how much they want the channels…I suggest going to the web-site and sending polite e-mails saying that you are interested in having these channels added to our systems! The more people they know will pay for it the faster they might get added!

    Sorry about my spelling…

  22. nycfan 08/19/2006 at 10:42 AM #

PA — not in nyc any more. When I lived there, the place to go for ACC and SEC fans was Brother Jimmys (one on the East Side and one on the West Side). There was some sports club (forgot the name) that I think Wolfpack Club members went to.

  23. Jeff 08/20/2006 at 7:13 PM #

I’m actually in New York right now! Heading to dinner.

PAPacker, in addition to the always wonderful Brother Jimmy’s, when I lived here we used to get groups to go to “Park Avenue Country Club” for some games.

There is some place down in Tribecca that evidently was ACC-centric, but I never went there.

“At the risk of shaking the Temple pillars, has there ever been a meaningful reason given for Dereck Whittenburg’s non-candidacy, given the fact that State hired his running mate?”

I don’t think so, not on this site anyway. I would really like to hear the reasoning behind that myself.

Since this thread is already veering off topic and since I am getting sick of researching the recruiting sites when all you see is UNC here, and UNC there, on every top player’s list somewhere, I want to ask about recruiting. The UNC thing is probably just the way the universe is intended to work, according to most Sendek supporters anyway, but it is a sad reality for the rest of the ACC right now.

What is going on with regards to JJ Hickson? There’s a 5 star recruit out there, ranked #3 at his position nationally, who has/had? NC State as one of three schools in his high interest column. He has visits scheduled to the other top two schools listed as Tenn and Fla, also a visit to Arizona, along with the school I never liked and despise more and more with every passing day, Georgetown. Also showing Kentucky and Illinois listed as medium interests but no visits scheduled to date.

Yet there is still no visit to Raleigh scheduled? Am I wrong? Has he already decided on another school before any of his scheduled visits have even taken place? Are we dragging our feet and going to be bringing up the rear in a long line of potential suitors? If not, what in the world is going on with the recruitment of a 6’9″ kid who from all accounts, the ones that I have read anyway, is highly skilled, aggressive, and absolutely owns the paint? Probably the only 5 star still listing NC STATE for 2007 as a legitimate contender for his services!!!???!!!???

How about the situation with Grant? Brackman?

I’m begging Sidney Lowe to please rise above the poorly handled PR that now plagues NC State and come up out of the overused hiding places that his boss and predecessor have worn out already. Just make a brief statement that says we’ve discovered some obstacles that weren’t clear from the beginning, we’re now working on them, and looking foward to the season ahead.

I can wait a few years for real progress and I fully understand the hurdles that have been thrown at Coach Lowe and his staff, but I don’t see how the continuance of the recent and all too familiar silent treatment can be boosting anyone’s confidence at the moment. Especially an undecided recruit sitting out there just waiting for a sign to separate one school from all the others. Now is the time for Lowe to use up his repertoire of basketball cliches on the general public. The more serious question and answer periods will come after season starts and I don’t want hear a long line of cliches spout forth then, like we have had endure around here recently.

This dead silence is not helping on any level. ONCE AGAIN!!!

  25. vtpackfan 08/22/2006 at 7:54 AM #

Wasn’t there something concerning Lowe going public with some Brackman updates on Monday afternoon? Anyone know?
