I ran across this piece tonight on CBS Sportsline and just had to highlight it. (Don’t worry…it isn’t a Greg Doyel article). (Link)
OK, Nebraska. No excuses. Just go make the hire.
Don’t assume Kansas and Texas are too far ahead to catch in the Big 12. They’re not.
Don’t assume a football school can’t be elite in basketball too. That’s baloney.
So get on the phone, athletic director Steve Pederson, and get this one right.
If ever you feel confused, close your eyes, take a deep breath and relax. If you must, call the Pump Brothers. But whatever you do, don’t think it’s impossible to turn things around
Where do we start? Really…where do we start on these comments? I could go in so many different directions.
What I will say is…NEBRASKA?!? This is NEBRASKA…and the media is talking them up as a potential power in basketball!!!
My head is spinning with the lunacy.
Nebraska has never done squat in college basketball. Nothing. They play in a 30 year old arena that holds 13,500 folks. Nothing close to glorious…with nothing close to the support of NC State. For example, in 2004, NC State ranked #16 in the country in attendance; averaging 1,000 more people per game than Nebraska can fit in their entire arena. The Cornhuskers ranked #64 in the country in attendance that season (averaging approximately 8,500 people per game).
When NC State was looking for a basketball coach, the large bulk of the national media loved telling us all that we have no chance to be great (in a sport in which we were excellent for a 50 year period). We had no chance to competing with Duke and Carolina despite our history of doing so and huge resources (RBC Center) dedicated to the sport despite the fact that our basketball program who has won two National Championships with two different coaches and 10 ACC Titles with four different coaches.
Yet…NEBRASKA should aim high despite a non-existent track record of proving that their program can be successful?
Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports said, “Whether it’s Sidney Lowe, Rick Barnes or John Calipari, it doesn’t really matter. There’s no way N.C. State will be able to topple the powers-that-be on Tobacco Road. “
Yet, Garry Parrish of CBS Sports says, “Don’t assume Kansas and Texas are too far ahead to catch in the Big 12. They’re not.”
(sarcasm) Can’t you all understand WHY State can’t succeed and Nebraska should be able? Forget the fact that four different coaches at NC State have won ACC Titles…it can’t be done at NC State! Forget the fact that NC State was easily won of the 10 best program in college basketball from 1940 – 1990…it can’t be done at NC State! Forget the 20,000 seat palace of an arena and amazing fan support…it can’t be done at NC State.
But, NEBRASKA!?!? Of course THERE is a place that it can be done!! When I think of the high school basketball talent in New York, California, Texas, North Carolina, Indiana and Kentucky, I can’t help but immediately draw a connection to their desire to spend four years in Lincoln, Nebraska (just like so many ‘greats’ before them).
Post-Script: The thing that I actually like about the link are the profiles that Parrish uses that serve to ‘mythbust’ the large majority of bullshit rationalizations of so many of the excuse-mongers in the NC State fanbase — no ten year plans at Tennessee, no letting probation kill your program at Ohio State, no ‘if onlys’ at other schools.
