Simmons to Hornets (Updated 9:45AM)

Link to NBA draft profile.

It always works out this way, doesn’t it? After following and pulling hard for the Charlotte Hornets for years…the franchise finally drafts a Wolfpacker that is going to make a significant contribution to the franchise…when they are playing Oklahoma City instead of Charlotte!

Poor Cedric…although he gets picked #15 (after being projected higher), he gets picked by one of the worst franchises in all of of sports – the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. Anyone who followed the Hornets or lived in Charlotte in the late 1990s and has experienced George Shinn completely understands this point.

The actual Hornets squad, however, was only a few games away from the playoffs because of the play of Chris Paul and the energy provided by the Oklahoma City fans. (So…is the franchise the New Orleans Hornets or the Oklahoma City Hornets? It’s just another potentially crippling decision that Shinn will have to make in the future. Does anyone want Shinn making real decisions?)

We will elevate a comment from our comments section to tie this together for the readers who incorrectly think that we are being negative about Cedric when we are really just being negative about George Shinn:

Defensively, NO/OK could make a huge leap up the leauge. Armstrong, Simmons, and Brown are all strong already on D. With Jackson, Fizer and Raleighs own David West there is a good opportunity for Scott to find the right combo’s on the floor to balance scoring and defense from his frontline. Paul and Mason are pretty underated as far as backcourts go IMHO. I agree SFN with Shinn comments, but putting the past and future aside for a minute, it is simply a good opportunity for Ced to make an impact in the NBA this year. Congrats, and good luck Big Ced.

If you listen to some of the experts, the Hornets draft was so good that it may be what they needed to propel them into the playoffs very soon. (Link to Fox Sports Winners & Losers)

The New Orleans Times-Picayune called Simmons “serviceable” in this piece on the NBA Draft:

Hilton Armstrong and Cedric Simmons.

Excited? Goose-pimply?

No?

Well, if Armstrong, the No. 12 overall pick in the first round of the NBA draft Wednesday night, and Simmons, No. 15, weren’t the starriest picks or the sexiest picks, they at least figure to be serviceable ones for the Hornets. They are players who can be plugged into the rotation, not expected to start immediately but, obviously, given every opportunity to prove their worth.

“Not right now,” Coach Byron Scott said, when asked if either would walk into the starting lineup. “I think both of them have the potential of being a starter.”

“These were the two highest names on our board (at Nos. 12 and 15),” General Manager Jeff Bower said.

Maybe no team in the NBA needed to get bigger more desperately than New Orleans, which has tried — with little success — to plug square peg P.J. Brown into its round hole at center the past two seasons.

Please do us a favor and share any interesting links and commentary regarding Cedric’s pick in the comments section below. For kicks, we thought that we would flash back to some of the comments regarding Julius Hodge’s selection by the Denver Nuggets last year.

I think the combo pick with Armstrong is a good deal. Ced can play his natural position PF, attack on defense and still have board support. Doesn’t hurt to have a PG that finds folks either.
Even if he is a punk.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaah Hornets! I’m out here in Oklahoma City, so I cant wait to see Ced. I hope he gets some PT his first year, because the Hornets with be battling it out in the cesspool called New Orleans after this season. 🙁 Actually the team is very young and was only a few games shy of reaching the playoffs this year. Byron Scott is a quality coach. Ced will be joining Chris Paul (rookie of the year). When Ced and Paul meet the first time, do you think Ced will ask CP what the capital of Thailand is??? BANGCOCK! 🙂

I’d never pull for a team that is owned by George Shinn. What a pile of trash. Chris and George deserve each other.

The hope here was he would sell to local Oklahoma group. Doesnt look so good right now.

Didn’t they almost make the playoffs last year? Worst franchise in all of sports?

Playing with Chris Paul is in no way a bad deal.

    SFN: George Shinn

Best thing that happened was when Shinn got is butt out of Charlotte. I’ll grant you “Saint” Paul ruined his reputation with Wolfpack faithful with one action – I’m guessing he wasn’t as “pure” as was thought before the “blow” or as evil as thought after. I really hope he and Ced can help right the Hornets ship. For sure Shinn can’t.

its not a bad place for Ced if you ask me. I am sure he is happy to get to play with Paul. Paul will emerge as one of the top point guards in the league in the next couple of years, has high BBall IQ, can get the ball to Ced.

Shinn always trades all his talent. If you remember he drafted K Bryant. and traded him for V. Divac what a deal!!!! I’m glad Shinn is gone so I can watch Morrison in charlotte:)!!!

Maybe not the worst franchise in sports, but close, and Shinn is definately the worst owner in sports.

Actually, if you were watching some of the draft coverage last night, Stephen A. Smith said that one Bob Johnson appears to have replaced the Clip-joints Donald Sterling as the NBA’s cheapest owner.

I laughed when I read how this article started: “Poor Cedric …”. Cedric is anything but poor now. Playing in the NBA (probably a lifetime dream) and millions of $$$ on top of that. I would say Cedric is pretty happy right now.

That draft was to damn confusing. Ced still the highest forward from State picked since Gug. Would have like to see him go to franchise with high aspirations, but hey it’s a draft. Wouldn’t he know Chris Paul from even before they played in the ACC, in state all-star games, summer camps, ect. Scott seems to be a decent enough coach but Okie City? Oil drilling and rodeo are considered true professions, basketball will always be amatuer in their eyes. NO going to come back, although maybe as Nuevo Orleans.

  14. Wulfpack 06/29/2006 at 9:22 AM #

Ced will shine in New Orleans. He’s got the PG of the future on his side and a strong/inspiring coach that knows the game. Even though the management is shoddy, he will be a force to be reckoned with in a few years. He’s relatively new to basketball and still developing, we all must remember that. The fact he was taken at #15 speaks volumes to his upside!

I lived in NC and followed the Hornets since their first year. I understand the problems with George Shinn, but the franchise has made the playoffs quite a bit.

They made a big jump last year and barely missed the playoffs.

They are better than the Atlanta Hawks without a doubt.

I am not a big fan of Shinn either. But he’s OK as far as NBA owner’s go. I don’t see much evidence of Bob being that much better, but that could change in time. I do think he’s drafted better than Shinn did initially, but I think at least in the beginning, Shinn tried really hard to put a respectable product on the floor in short order.

  18. Mr O 06/29/2006 at 11:14 AM #

Shinn got lucky with a #1 pick and a #2 pick in back to back years.

However, he and his GM whose name I have forgotten(Bob???) put together a pretty good team right before they jetted to NO.

  19. choppack1 06/29/2006 at 1:04 PM #

Bob Bass. Yep – Bass did an excellent job.

  20. CarnifeX 06/29/2006 at 1:09 PM #

How can you say that Chris Paul is underrated??? Wasn’t he ROY?? Doesn’t sound so underrated to me.

  21. vtpackfan 06/29/2006 at 7:16 PM #

Chris Paul and Desmond Mason as backcourt are underated. There is plenty of awards, media smooch’s and endorsements for a single player to make a name for himself but basketball is still a team game and backcourt frontcourt are different then ROY or best young point guard.

[…] NC State’s Cedric Simmons has been traded from the New Orleans/Oklahoma City/Who Knows What is Next Hornets to the World-Champion-Contending Cleveland Cavaliers. (Link) Simmons made four starts in 43 games last season. He averaged 2.9 points and 2.5 rebounds a game. Simmons, a first-round pick by the Hornets in the 2006 draft, left North Carolina State after his sophomore season. Simmons is a good shot-blocker and will see time with the Cavs from off the bench. For a nice few minutes away from football, you can check out Cedric’s highlight video here and our draft night blog entry by clicking here. “Cedric is a young, talented player,” Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry said in a written statement. “We look forward to participating in his continued development here in Cleveland.” […]
