Now that Drew Brees is in New Orleans, Philip Rivers will be taking the reigns as the starting quarterback for the San Diego Chargers. (Related link from San Diego regarding the start of the Rivers era)
A new era has begun.
“I always hoped it was going to be right here,? Rivers said yesterday. “Now it’s here. I’m glad it’s here. I hope it’s here for a long time.?
After two years of his being little more than a rumor around here, Rivers has begun the process he and many others thought would have started long ago.
There is much fanfare to come: when Rivers makes his debut at minicamp next month; even more at training camp in July and then again when he starts his first exhibition game in August; and, finally, when he starts his first real NFL game Sept. 11 in Oakland.
In addition to attention in San Diego (see Chargers Coach Marty Schottenheimer talk about PR) Rivers is also garnering a lot of national media attention this offseason.
* ESPN talked at length during the NFL Draft about Rivers’ new role as a starting NFL quarterback.
* Today at 4pm (and to be repeated a couple of times in the next 24 hours), ESPN’s NFL Live is going to feature Rivers.
* On Sunday night at 11pm, Fox Sports “Around the South” is also going to feature Rivers.
