Fowler Jumps The Shark

“I don’t think Mike Krzyzewski is liked by all Duke fans,” Fowler said.

Holy mother of pearl. The man’s finally lost it.

Duke fans who don’t like Coach K? Where, precisely, are those people? Are they in the same magic box with the “moderate Arabs,” low-maintenance girls who use coke, and dignified leisure suits?

I’ve long been critical of Fowler for various reasons. But, in turn, I’ve always understood why he says what he says. He needs to support his coach, so Sendek detractors are a “lunatic fringe.” He needs to bank the firestorm of (well-deserved) criticism that roasted Chuck Amato last fall, so he issues a statement of support. I don’t like it, but I get it.

This comment, though, is just nuts. Duke fans who don’t like Coach K are about as common as Reagan-hating Republicans and United States Marines who thought the Soviet Union was just peachy keen. Such people simply don’t exist.

And for good reason: What’s not to like about Coach K, for the Duke fan? His multiple national titles? Enough ACC titles to paper your average walk-in closet? That he runs the clean program Fowler extols in Coach Sendek and at the same time largely dominates both the ACC AND his own school’s arch-rival, UNC – while giving NC State regular beatings in the process?

Fowler should spend less time making – let’s be honest – jaw-droppingly idiotic comments like this, and more time pondering why his university athletics programs generally pull a distant third (barring Duke football) to two area universities whose every basketball matchup is a national media event.

Defending Herb Sendek by claiming similar fan discontent about Coach K isn’t just erroneous, though. It’s nonsense, squared. Why? Even if it was true (which, of course, it’s not), it has absolutely no bearing on fan displeasure with Coach Sendek, nor does it cause those facts – 8-38 for example – stoking such displeasure to evaporate as airily as Fowler himself tosses out this rhetorical Tartuffery.

I’ll make you a deal, Lee: You get us a program that wins like Coach K’s, and I’ll defend you even when you say something this clueless. Until then, stick to comments on the programs you manage – and to the facts.

I am so glad that you got to it because (a) you could do a better job with this than I could, and (b) I just don’t have the time today.

When I read this ridiculous comment today about feel out of my chair.

Additionally, I couldn’t believe the timing of this amazingly “insightful” thought in light of one of comments left JUST YESTERDAY in one of the discussions:

“I think the people in this community who are more witty than myself need to come up with some term or moniker to mock the consistent practice of subjectively self-selecting arbitrary, largely unrelated micro-examples of in an attempt to “prove” a larger point.

I know that VaWolf wrote an AWESOME entry on general data analysis….but, we need something that can succinctly make the point on this kind of behavior.”

Thanks. Honest to God, this is the kind of nonsense comment associated with Robert Mugabe, Soviet-era TASS, or present-day Iran.

Simply put, he needs to be called on garbage like this.

    Fowler is a GD idiot

LF has let his mouth write checks that Herb can’t cover….and now he is scrambling for excuses. Put this comment along with previous gems:

    – We’ve been competitive with Duke and UNC over the last several years.

    – We’ll be competitive next year because of all of the players that will be going pro.

    And my favorite from 2001:

Fans want a national championship. The way Herb’s doing things, when we do get there – and I don’t think it’s far away – it will stay there.

VAWolf, yes. This is indeed my PREVIOUS Fowler favorite:

We’ve been competitive with Duke and UNC over the last several years.

    to which I respond:

    8-38, or 17.4 percent victories.

By that standard, Poland was “competitive,” militarily, with the Third Reich.

    Amazing. Simply amazing.

â€?My charge is to be a top three program in the conference in every sport.â€? – Lee Fowler April 23, 2002

The guy has diarrhea of the mouth….its just that simple.

And he has the notion to call us lunatics. Good heavens, what’s next:

Lee Fowler: “Well, you know the folks down in Tallahassee really do not like Bowden that much either.”

What a moron! I could do what this idiot does. God help us because our programs are doomed.

I think this man would wipe Zendick’s ass after a battle with the stomach flu with a millimeter by millimeter square piece of one ply toilet paper.

I LOVE the chronicling of quotes!!! Please keep it up!!! This is something that this blog has tried to do over the last 18 months, as well.

    Here are some:

The following is from February 16, 2004’s edition of The Wolfpacker magazine’s Q&A with NC State Athletics Director, Lee Fowler:

Question: What are your goals as an athletics director for the upcoming year, in terms of improving athletic programs and in improving facilities? How will those goals be measured? – Herb, Archdale, NC Class of 1987

    Fowler:

My goals are the same as when I came to NC State three years ago: we want to be top-25 program in all sports. I maintain that goal, and I feel it is very reachable. I think we are moving in that direction in most sports…

…We have to ask our coaches to take their programs toward those levels. But we also have to provide the facilities for them to at that level if we are going to demand those results. And I think that ‘t what we are doing.

By the end of ‘05, we will have most of our programs in the types of facilities that coaches can be held accountable to. I don’t think that was the case when I first got here. I think we had teams competing against people with a lot more assets than we had.

This article also provides some pretty good insight into his thoughts about NC State.

For a man who runs from every opportunity to compare NC State to our rivals, he sure chose a curious way to break the pattern. Next thing you know he will declare that we can only compare our BB records against Doh because Roy hasn’t been there 5 years yet.

If this latest meltdown…2 L’s to WFU in less than a week doesn’t seal Herb’s fate…it should seal Fowlers!!! The way they are playing now,,they should turn down an NCCA bid and let Wake have it(assuming Wake doesn’t run the tables on Duke and win the whole thing!)

I can’t figure out which is worse, Fowler saying how great we are or the performance of the teams. The football team was extremely overrated and the basketball team followed suit. Why don’t these idiots try to be humble for a change. Then, if the team wins, they look good. I am sick and tired of them saying how great we are and then looking like dog s**t on a grey day.

If this were Peru or Bolivia we’d just take this idiot out back and place him in front of a firing squad. In this case it is one of the few times in my life I’m sorry we don’t live in South America!

Was Lee Fowler the Minister of Information for the Saddam Hussien regime? He makes about as much sense?
