Herb Sendek’s record in out of conference games played outside of Raleigh over the last 9 years is as follows:
* 16-24 overall
* 5-7 in postseason games
* 2-3 on the home court of teams ranked when we played
* managed to achieve a record better than .500 in two of nine seasons

Oh yea….since the “last four years” is the only timeframe that has ever existed in the history of NC State Basketball…the following statistically indicates how much ‘better’ the “last four years” have been (including the 2005-2006 season):
* 10-14 overall
* 6-10 in regular season games
* 4-4 in postseason games
* one winning record in 4 regular seasons
* played 3 ranked teams outside of the RBC in the last 4+ regular seasons
* won one game against a ranked team in 4+ regular seasons outside the RBC (that team ultimately did not even make NCAA Tournament)
* winless in regular season games outside of the RBC against NCAA Tournament teams in the last 4.5 years

    Is there any wonder why we are apprehensive at the beginning of this season? Great info.

  2. Jeff 12/01/2005 at 8:54 AM #

    But…we are “improving” (as if that is the goal).

  3. Class of '74 12/01/2005 at 9:05 AM #

    I really would like to see Herb succeed, but at our glacial pace of improvement, I don’t think I’ll live long enough to see us on top again.

  4. Jon Smith 12/01/2005 at 9:55 AM #

    As H&R Block used to say – that is reason # 12,876 to can his ass!

  5. Jeff 12/01/2005 at 12:40 PM #

    The reason that I share this kind of information is not to endorse the ultimate firing of the coach.

    The reason that I share it is to use factual information to drive conversations.

    Your conclusions about the facts are your own.

    Many people think this record is obviously more than acceptable.
    Many don’t.

    Holy crap, I forgot about the Princeton game in 1997. A score of 38-36, unbelievable! State didn’t have anyone score in double figures that game, the high scorer for the Pack had 8 points. Totals for the game: 30 made baskets, 81 shot attempts, only 3 free throw attempts (all by State). Crazy, and boring!

  7. statelee 12/01/2005 at 4:06 PM #

    It’s hard to argue with the facts. All of the Herb apologists will reference back to his “high character quotient” and “seeds of greatness”, but the record speaks for itself. He’s an overpaid assistant coach at best. I don’t think we’ll be anything more than mediocre as long as he’s our coach.

  8. packbackers 12/01/2005 at 6:02 PM #

    That overpaid assistant coach comment is a little ridiculous. Man, being in the top 25 of 330 Division I schools is considered mediocre? WOW

  9. Jeff 12/01/2005 at 10:33 PM #

    ^ So, we are going to be in the Top 25 this week? Great to know!!!

    In 10 years, there are over 220 total basketball polls. So, being ranked in less than 10% of those polls somehow makes us one of the Top 25 of 330 Division I schools? Interesting.

    And, the obvious difference between the “long term perspective” of the program and that is supposedly so important and the difference of specially selecting pieces of information to make a point.

  10. packbackers 12/02/2005 at 12:26 AM #

    “I don’t think we’ll be anything more than mediocre as long as he’s our coach”
    Jeff, that was the comment I was responding to. You must have missed that. As I said, we are NOW in the Top 25 out of 330 schools which is way above mediocre. The comment was we would NEVER be anything more than mediocre with Sendek as coach. What, now doesn’t count? Oh yeah, now doesn’t matter, because we are in the Top 25. Since we are in the Top 25 NOW as I type this, you want to talk about averages over a certain time period. It is whatever is the most pessimistic and negative way for you to look at things, right?

  11. Class of '74 12/02/2005 at 6:40 AM #

    We should be damn mad when we aren’t in the top 25 for basketball. This ain’t Fresno State guys! We have a long basketball tradition that was ruined in recent times by some academic morons who could have cared less about sports in general. Get some f-ing backbone and demand better because we sure have had better!!!

  12. Jeff 12/02/2005 at 7:37 AM #

    “As I said, we are NOW in the Top 25 out of 330”

    packbacker…just so confirm…it was you who was criticizing me for seeking irrelevant stats in the other entry? Hilarious.

  13. packbackers 12/02/2005 at 10:22 AM #

    Well said, class of 74. We do deserve better. I fully expect to be in the top 15 year in and year out, and we are surely moving in that direction. Of course we all wish we could get there faster. You always refer to the highs we have experienced, but don’t forget about the lows. Right now, our program is closer to the former. And Jeff, I was not seeking any stat. I was simply stating that top 25 out of 330 schools is not mediocre. I, however, will not settle for mediocre. I also don’t feel a constant need to criticize our coach when I certainly don’t see any available coaches on the horizon any better, nor do I see the need to replace the one we have. When I do criticize our coach for poor performance, I give him credit (unlike some people) for good performance.

    Any idea where this information resides? I would like to know how many weeks we have actually been ranked?

    I AM SO SICK OF THE NEGATIVE PUBLICITY OF THE PROGRAM, IF YOU CANT SEE THAT HERB SENDEK HAS IMPROVED THIS PROGRAM THAN YOU ARE SIMPLY BLIND.YES IT HAS TAKEN HIM A LITTLE LONGER THAN EXPECTED BUT THE FACT IS THE PRESENT.FOR ALL YOU GENIOUS OUT THERE THAT GET PAID TO TALK ABOUT BASKETBALL JUST LOOK AT THE THE ROSTER FROM HERBS FIRST YEAR THAT HE INHERITED FROM LES ROBINSON AND THE ROSTER HE CURRENTLY HAS. ENOUGH SAID.WHO CARES ABOUT THERE IN SEASON NON COFERENCE SCHEDULE, HE PLAYS IN HE ACC.DIN’T HE FINISH 2ND IN THAT CONFERNCE AND WASNT HE NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR.IF HE COACHED ANYWHERE OTHER THAN 5 MINUTES FROM TWO OF THE BEST PROGRAMS EVER HE WOULD REVERED AS A GREAT COACH. HE IS RECRUITING WELL, HE GRADUATES HIS PLAYERS AND HE WINS.

  17. Jeff 12/03/2005 at 11:30 PM #

    That has got to be one of the best parodies ever! Great work!

  18. Class of '74 12/04/2005 at 1:15 PM #

    Brian do you understand if Dean had taken as long as Herb has we would never have had the Dean Smith era or if Coach K had taken this long the Dukies would not be what they are? Dean was hung in effigy in his third year and the Iron Dukes wondered if K could coach on the ACC level in his third year! He was one more bad year from getting the hook in Durham. Herb would never have been given the time he has had at either of those schools. The man has had plenty of time to build a strong program. It’s time to put up some banners or for the fans to demand better.

  19. brian c 12/04/2005 at 8:22 PM #

    WELL THEN PLEASE TELL ME WHAT COACH IN THIS COUNTRY WOULD BE FIRED AFTER BEING NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR AND A SECOND PLACE FINISH IN THE TOUGHEST LEAGUE IN AMERICA ONE YEAR AND THE NEXT YEAR GOING TO THE SWEET 16. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT COACH?YEAH I AGREE IT HAS TAKEN TO LONG BUT THATS IN THE PAST. SO YOU ARE TELLING ME BECAUSE IT TOOK TO LONG TO FIRE HIM, WHAT KIND OF STUPID BULLSHIT IS THAT.MAYBE IF HE WORE SOME BRIGHT RED SHOES AND CURSED A LITTLE HE COULD STAY

  20. All your base... 12/04/2005 at 10:13 PM #

    Brian, turn off your caps lock, please.

    Yeah, we got to the Sweet 16…and then in a game we should have won going away in the second half, we blew a nice halftime lead to Wisconsin. Kind of reminded me of when we blew that gigantic lead to Vandy…and to Maryland. The Vandy and Maryland debacles _alone_ should have tipped everyone off to Herb’s genious in-game coaching skills. Pathetic.

    Blah, blah, blah. All of this get’s hashed over year in and year out, but the same thing happens under Herb. The Pack plays a wimpy, pre-ACC schedule and we get some wins…lets Herb get the 10 or so pre-ACC schedule wins he needs. The ACC schedule starts up, we get our teeth kicked in a bit at the beginning and we eventually get acclamated to the higher level of play, but we end up with 8 or so wins in conference play. So we’re sitting on the bubble. Herb starts blabbing about how we play in the toughest conference and how they should let more teams into the NCAA tournament than they already do…and throws in an ancient proverb or two for good measure. We win one or two in the ACC tournament and earn a trip to the dance…and then look good for a game, maybe two, but then lay a big fat egg and go out with a flat, ugly loss. And then Herb takes no responsiblity for anything, saying that he did his best to get the team prepared, and that he can’t make them get motivated to play hard.

    Lather, rinse, repeat. I swear, being a Wolfpack fan during hoops season, I feel like I’m in Groundhog’s Day…

    Lee: Then put your little hand in mine
    Herb: There ain’t no hill or mountain we can’t climb

    Lee: Babe
    BOTH: I got you babe
    Herb: I got you babe

    See you all this time next year, where we’ll be talking about another past lacklauster season while we listen to the disillusioned say we’re better off than we were.

  21. Class of '74 12/05/2005 at 7:22 AM #

    I don’t care if Herb’s style mimics John Wooden or Jimmy V. I’m not about style! Both were successful and their are many paths to success in life. It has taken Herb a very long journey here at State if he is on that path that’s all. My point is he would never have been given the time at Duke or UNC that he has been afforded at NCSU. Now do you understand?

  22. SaccoV 12/06/2005 at 5:37 PM #

    Is it just me, or was Brian C typing too loudly?

    Like many others, there have been too many losses, blown leads, bad road losses, too much for one Sweet 16 appearance to counteract. Yes, a 2nd place finish is nice. Yes, a winning record in conference is nice. But after ten years, I’m pretty sure the big 3 (K, Gary, and Roy) all had conference titles (though Roy’s came in the Big 12). It’s fine to have a good team, but good teams with good coaches almost never become great teams. Someone in another post mentioned the comparison to Gene Keady, which is hauntingly accurate. Until the conference regular season title comes back to Raleigh, I don’t think Sendek deserves another year or ten. Conversely, Brian, I don’t think that anyone is expecting State to dominate the conference as Duke has recently, but dammit there should have been another banner by now that looks better than the NIT Final Four. Call us what you will, we will not be blinded by Fowler’s “letters” or your CAPITAL PLEAS! We are upset that we ARE NOT competing with the elite in the country as we twice did.

  23. Wolfpack92 12/22/2005 at 3:27 PM #

    Why do some people keep saying Herbs improving the program. Aren’t they comparing him to Less (every one remembers the Less Robinson Invitational). So we are saying, Herb’s a good coach because his team’s have better records and are ranked more frequently than Less’s teams were. I have a problem with the logic, Less just is not a good measuring stick. We should be comparing him to Norm Sloan and Jimmy V. Both Norm and Jimmy V had teams that won National Championships, has herb? Both Norm and Jimmy V had teams that won an ACC Tournement Titles, has Herb? Both Norm and Jimmy V had teams that have been ranked #1, has Herb?

    Of the last 4 NCSU BB coaches Herb ranks #3.

    It’s time for Herb step aside. What’s Bob Huggins up to these days?

  24. Wolfpacker2010 12/22/2005 at 4:03 PM #

    Bob Huggins. hmmmm.
    Let’s think. Huggy Bear’s teams play defense, run, and basically play fast and furious, oh, and they WIN! He also wouldn’t stand for a freaking second in Coach K or ole’Roy’s shadow. Think of it this way, who do you think ole’Roy would rather face 2 years from now, Herb’s 12th year team of status quo players and status quo playing style, or Huggy’s 2nd ACC recruiting class? Yeah, I thought so. Carolina and Duke fans LOVE Herb Sendek. They pencil in a “W” right there, automatically! They love the fact that a once proud neighbor/competitor is so LAME now. They do not FEAR NCSU, they chant “Not our rival”. Huggy would sure as hell bring the teeth back to NC State. Also, Win or lose, it’d be a hell of lot more fun (and interesting) to watch Huggy’s players get after the Cameron Crazies than it has been to watch Herb’s boys gumming on defeat after meaningful defeat. Where’s your PRIDE wolfpack nation? Someone in a post above sounds positively thrilled with 1, ONE! freaking second place ACC finish in 10 years! Say WHAT !?!?!
